My Review:
This was my first book by Melynda Price and to me she knocked it out of the park. This book was filled with mystery and romance. It is a bit different from most books I have read including the Amish. 

Eight years ago Detective Josiah "Joe" Troyer left his family and the Amish community where he was raised in Lancaster County Pennsylvania after asking for the love of his life's hand in marriage and was turned down by her father. By leaving the community he is shunned. In the Amish community this means no one will speak to or even acknowledge a shunned person. Joe goes on with his life in the English world and becomes a detective in the police force. 

The FBI is looking for a madman who is killing young Amish women and taking their hair as trophies. The FBI comes to Joe knowing his acquaintance with the Amish. Joe decides to go along with the FBI and be part of the investigation, even with his doubts of going home so to speak. 

Hannah has been heartbroken for 8 years. When the love of her life just walks away one day. While working in a small inn near the Amish Community she lives in she comes face to face with the only man she has ever loved as well as the man who broke her heart.  Detective Josiah "Joe" Troyer.

When they meet face to face all the pain and the love come back to both of them. Hannah's husband has passed away and her younger sister was one of the victims of what the FBI are calling the "Barber", Joe asks Hannah to help him with talking to the other families and members of the community knowing they will not speak to a shunned person. Reluctantly Hanna agrees. Needing to know what happened to her sister and to get justice for her. 

With Hannah's help Joe sets out to bring the "Barber" down before he takes another victim. But they have to survive the investigation themselves.

She moved to pull away, but the man’s fingers closed over her wrist.



“Let me go.” She jerked her arm, but he wouldn’t release his grip. She gave him a cautionary look, and he loosened his fingers, though he still held her. Warning bells went off. What if he’s not here in peace? But his eyes sparkled impishly. He seemed to enjoy her skin pressed against his. Maybe he hadn’t been touched in a while. Or maybe he had a crush. Who knew.



Before she could extricate herself, the intercom chimed. “Sakota, are you okay?”



“Yeah, I’m fine. He’s just being friendly—”



The man’s forefinger trailed along her arm again. She sucked in a breath and shut her eyes as a series of images flashed through her mind. A high wall made of stacked stones. A hand spread out to touch the tips of tall, golden wheat of a field. Multihued buildings in the distance under a purple sky. Children’s laughter and then screams. She jerked when the images changed. Strange rain, like metal. Black ships attacking from the sky, horrible screams which rent the air, death. A gentle brush against her hand again. She inhaled and opened her eyes. The man searched her, calm and patient. She struggled to see straight, but her mind spun.



“W-was that your—”



The isolation walls shot up. Rutledge burst into the room and advanced like an angry bear, brutish, immaculate, and combat ready in his black Oceanstone fatigues. “Let her go,” he snarled.



Rutledge yanked the man’s hand off her and pushed her aside. She fell to the floor on her back in a dizzy haze, reeling from the vision. She turned her head. The man bellowed and tore loose from his restraints. His and Rutledge’s images faded into one as they collided and fought. Rutledge’s weapon whirred as he strained to activate it. The rifle propelled over her head and hit the wall.



“Stop.” Her pleas fell on deaf ears. She closed her eyes.



The men barged into the room with heavy footfalls and angry shouts. She opened her eyes, but her vision swirled. The blurred image of the alien lifted Rutledge’s lieutenant like a kitchen chair and catapulted him in the same direction as the weapon. “Stop,” she hollered to the men. “Don’t shoot him. He wasn’t attacking me.”



Another soldier fell to the floor with a sick thud, holding his stomach. “Yeah? Well, he’s attacking me.”



The alien pounced over her, crouching low. He caged her with his body and made a guttural rumble in his throat, a warning to the men. She turned her head to the marines, who zeroed their weapons in on them.

“Hey, Mia Hamm,’’ a deep rumbling voice called from above
me.

I turned in the direction of the voice. The handsome man I
saw yesterday playing football with his son was calling to me from the second-floor
balcony.

“Who?”

“Mia Hamm. The famous soccer player.”

“I know who Mia Hamm is. I’m not her, and you’re in Barbados
where we call it football.”

“Well, I don’t know your name. Why don’t you tell me what it
is so I know what to call you and then you can tell me where you learned to
play football like that.”

“I think you’ll find that most people who grew up in the
Caribbean can pass a football with some skill. I’m not special.”

“I don’t know if I agree with that.” He grinned, and I felt
myself flush. “And you still haven’t told me your name.”

“Where are your wife and son?” I asked, deciding to nip this
little game in the bud.

His brow furrowed in confusion before realization hit.

“What? No. She is not my wife and Philip is not my son.”

Something that felt suspiciously like hope caused my heart
to flutter at his words, but he was probably lying.

“That little boy looked exactly like you.”

“Hey, I’m not saying he’s not a good looking kid.” His grin
returned, and so did my flush. “He’s just not my kid.”

“Well, his mother seemed interested. Why don’t talk to her
about soccer?”

“I’m not interested in his mother.” He gave me a pointed
look, his grin still firmly in place.

My stupid heart fluttered again.

“I’m already taken,” he said.

The fluttering stopped.

“But the problem is, she won’t tell me her name.” He tucked
his bottom lip between his teeth, still grinning.

And the fluttering returned. A deep breath helped me calm
myself and regain focus before I pressed the elevator button again, knowing
that it would do nothing to make the elevator come faster.

I glared at him and rolled my eyes. He was leaning over his
balcony waiting for an answer.

“No,” I said finally.

“No, what?” he asked.

“Whatever you want. Whatever you think this is. The answer
is no.”

“It can be whatever you want it to be.” That line would’ve
been incredibly sleazy from anyone else, but he made it sound so sincere and
almost convincing that it was clear I needed to keep my distance from him, no
matter how charming he was and no matter how long it had been since I felt a
man’s hands on my body.

“Good,” I said. Mercifully, the elevator arrived at that
moment, and I stepped inside. “Nothing it is.”
