#FallingInLove Spotlight on Jen Geigle Johnson

Tabitha's Folly by Jen Geigle Johnson

Tabitha's Folly is one of Five books all set at the same Regency House Party Series. While each is a standalone story, watch our characters mingle together with others from the books in the series. The stories can be read in any order.

Lady Tabitha Easton recklessly dodges four over-protective brothers while trying to gain attention from the man who holds her heart. She has many choices of suitors, and with Henry as disinterested as ever, she turns to what is wholly forbidden, an irresistibly handsome footman. While their friendship grows, her trust in him increases while her hurt and doubt in her childhood love and friend pushes her away from all she's ever known as family.

When Lord Henry Courtenay discovers a new attraction to his childhood friend, his role as one of her chaperones at the house party becomes near impossible. Irrationally defensive about any potential suitors and seeking time alone with the enticing Tabby, maintaining friendship with her brothers proves more difficult than he ever imagined. His task becomes all the more difficult when she refuses to understand his growing attraction and often finds herself in almost compromising situations.

When Tabitha's choices might lead her to danger, and doubt and distrust are high, Henry must prove himself or lose her forever.

It's the perfect hit of romance, regency, and intrigue. A very fun read.

Great characters with the potential for so many more stories. This is a sweet romance and a beautiful ending.

Damen's Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson

What happens when a villain falls in love? Will his newfound true feelings be strong enough to divert him from his nefarious plans?

The Story of a villain and the life he makes for himself. This is a companion novella to Tabitha's Folly. And although it can be thoroughly enjoyed alone, the true nature of Damen and all his secrets will be better understood having read Tabitha's Folly where his first villainous nature is revealed. Many wanted to understand him better and so, Damen's Secret was born.

Damen Laconi is of noble blood from both of his parents. Unfortunately neither will claim him. Legitimacy is hard won as a footman in England. He values his position as the handsomest footman on the countess' estate but hungers for more, a title of his own.

Giorgia comes from Italy, sent by Damen's mother, to woo him and bring him home. Can she accomplish such a thing before her own secrets are revealed, and before he carries out his own reckless plans?

Damen's Secret is a Regency House Party Novella. Look for all the titles in this series.

Read an Excerpt:
‘Sorry,’ she said. ‘I don’t play ball.’

He hugged the ball close to his chest. He understood that. None of his sisters were into sport either. But, he loved his sports; it was a major part of his life.

‘What do you play then? I’m up for anything.’

She rubbed her hands against the afternoon chill, as her clear blue eyes met his. His heart hammered. They were the prettiest eyes he’d ever seen, and if he wasn’t careful his concentration would take a serious hit, and he’d sound like some daft prick.

‘I’m not very sporty. How did they go?’

Mike shook his head. ‘Another loss,’ he all but whispered.

She gave him a soft smile. ‘Oh, that happens. Are you having a reconnoitre with them?’

His lips quivered, but he couldn’t hold back. He let out a belly laugh.

She’s gorgeous. A one-off.

The Berlin Tunnel -- A Cold War Thriller by Roger L. Liles

Thriller / Historical Fiction

During the Cold War, a tunnel was built by British MI-6 and the CIA to tap into a message cable in East Berlin with the hopes of intercepting and exploiting communications with Russia. The Berlin Tunnel is based on this historic event.

***

 In the height of the Cold War, American Air Force Captain Robert Kerr finds himself in a divided Berlin awash with spies who move freely between the East and West. His task—build a TOP SECRET tunnel under the River Spree into East Berlin—tap into highly classified communications links between civilian and military leaders in Russia and the Warsaw Pact countries.

Love couldn’t have found him at a worse time.

Soon after he arrives, Robert falls for a German girl, Anna Fischer. Nasty East German Secret Police harass them both constantly, intent on determining what Robert and his work crew are doing in Berlin, but it’s Anna who gets caught in the crossfire.

 The wall is closed, trapping 19 million East Germans including Anna’s entire family behind the Iron Curtain. As the world holds its collective breath over the Berlin Crisis, Robert and Anna fight for their lives as they attempt to free her family.

Advance Praise

"Exceptional!  The settings and descriptions are vivid and real.  The author is a master of making the reader want to know what happens next.”

 Karen Black, Author of Code of Conduct

"This story was captivating.  A good history lesson as well as a good read.  You get out of one tension-filled event only to have another start almost immediately.”

USN Captain Terry Badger, Author of The Saga of HS-8

“The characters, scenes and dialogue were absolutely believable.  I felt like I was reading an autobiography, believed everything the writer said happened and was surprised when I found it was work of fiction. I enjoyed meeting Anna and Robert and loved seeing the East and West through their experiences—1960s Berlin was as much a character as they are.”

Ingrid Hoffmeister, English Artist and Writer

“I volunteered to be the Beta Readers of a historical novel; what I got was a page turning mystery, love story and spy thriller. The technical details of the building of the tunnel were easy to understand and the tension of the many problems they encounter was believable.  Pat yourself on the back.  You’ve done a great job.  I expected that I wouldn’t really be into the book, but intrigue grabbed me right after the prologue.”

Sarah Vosburgh, Award Winning Short Story Author

Prologue
Robert

April 14, 2010
My quest intensified after an internet search revealed that after fifty years, the code word LUMAR had been declassified. In the months that followed, I spent time each day on Google as I searched for additional information.
My eleven-year-old grandson Jonathan recently helped me set up a Google Alert to automatically inform me when someone posted something new. My search terms included Berlin Tunnel, U.S. Air Force, and, of course, Project LUMAR.
Following my regular routine, after lunch I checked my email account. Startled, I discovered my first alert. When I opened the URL and the subject document, a familiar page jumped out at me from my computer screen. Shocked, I pushed back my chair and sat frozen in place. I finally caught my breath, and shouted, “Well, I’ll be damned!”
Anna rushed from her nearby potting studio, gasping, “Are you okay, leibchen?”
“Come here! Come around so you can see what I’ve found!”
“I thought you were having another heart attack or something.”
“No! No!” I pointed. “Look! Look here! The construction plan I wrote in Berlin almost fifty years ago. It’s on the internet!”
She moved behind me, smoothed an errant tuft of my thinning gray hair into place. She put both hands on my shoulders, bending forward for a better view.
I felt her stiffen. She moved her hands to my throat, pretending to choke me. “So is this what you’ve hidden from me all these years!”
Knowing I’d opened an old wound, I turned to face her. “There was a reason I couldn’t tell you. An important reason.”
 “What might that be?”
 “I signed a non-disclosure agreement with the American government.” I raised my hands in mock surrender. “I could have gone to prison for thirty years for the unauthorized disclosure of information about Project LUMAR, the program I managed.”
Her face softened. She put her arms around me. “Robbie, if you’d told me about that agreement, I wouldn’t have pressed you so hard for information or been so hurt that you wouldn’t trust me.”
“I was even ordered not to tell anyone about the non-disclosure agreement,” I explained. I felt both relieved and exhilarated that, at last, I could share this secret with Anna, my wife and best friend of almost fifty years.
I’d suppressed thoughts about the Top Secret construction program in Berlin, but the old visceral reaction persisted. Perhaps this once highly classified information could still be used by our former enemies, although they no longer existed. East Germany and their Secret Police, the Stasi, as well as the Soviet Union and its KGB, had passed into the history books many years earlier.
Anna kissed the top of my head. “From the start of our relationship, I knew you were hiding something important, but I trusted you and believed you would tell me one day. I helped you with the charade, didn’t I?”
“Yes, despite everything that happened to you—to both of us, you helped to preserve my cover. I wouldn’t have succeeded without your support every step of the way, Anna.” I stood to give her a heartfelt hug and kiss.
“So now that this information is on the internet, you can tell me everything. I’ve always wanted to know the complete story.”
Anna deserved to know why she’d been the target of Stasi harassment and torture. I positioned her chair next to mine. “Let’s read this report together. Then you’ll finally learn what my construction crew and I were doing in Berlin.” Holding her hand to reassure her, I continued. “See the original classifications on the top and bottom of my plan? TOP SECRET RESTRICTED DISTRIBUTION/US EYES ONLY and the caveat PROJECT LUMAR.”
“All of those lines have been crossed out,” she observed. “What does that mean?”
“First, twenty years ago, the document was reclassified to SECRET. You can see that word was also lined through and dated. Last year, a large rubber stamp was used to declare the document I generated officially UNCLASSIFIED.”
“Early in our relationship, I realized that those communist bastards in the Stasi were making every effort to uncover your secret. My distinct impression was that you, Scott, Mark, and Kurt were dedicated to whatever you were doing. Because I trusted you, I hid my disappointment at being kept in the dark and did my best to help every step of the way.”
 “Yes, you did! There was an excellent reason I couldn’t tell you or anyone what I was doing. If one of the thousands of communist spies who entered West Berlin every day, or their myriad operatives at every level of German society, heard just one word, the whole game would have been over. The communists would have enjoyed another major victory.”
“What one word, for heaven's sake?” she asked, clearly intrigued.
“TUNNEL. Upon hearing that one word, the Russians and East Germans would have immediately begun a concerted search on both sides of the border between East and West Berlin. They would have discovered where we were digging and then used every means, including force, to sabotage my project.”
“I knew there was a tunnel!” Anna insisted. “During family reunions, our nieces and nephews still talk about your amazing tunnel. But you always avoid those conversations. You’ve even refused to confirm such a structure existed. Finally, you’ll be able to share the part you played in the building of that tunnel.”
 “Yes…Yes, I can!” So many memorable events, I realized. The closing of the Berlin Wall, the Berlin Crisis and the Tunnel. Memories of those fifteen months came rushing back, as if they’d happened only yesterday. Now, I could share it all with Anna.
“Robbie, tell me everything.”
“Where should I start? The day I arrived in Berlin. Let’s see it was October….October 11, 1960….As the aircraft began its descent….”

Becoming Magic by Michelle Garren Flye

Becoming Magic

GENRE:   contemporary romance

BLURB:

Carole Barnes once believed she would make her own way in Hollywood, but those days are long gone, leaving behind only a dark, slimy secret that Carole has never shared with anyone. Now she hides in the bright sunshine of the Crystal Coast of North Carolina. As far away as she can get from Hollywood. But what to do when Hollywood comes knocking in the form of a sexy movie star?

Connor Wallace has everything going for him—looks, talent, a successful career—but what he really wants is to perform magic on stage. His love of magic leads him back to his mentor Walt Bryson. At first, he’s pleased when Walt suggests his assistant Carole produce a documentary of his transformation from movie star to magician. He’s worked with Carole before—but the ambitious girl who had a crush on him is gone now, leaving a beautiful, withdrawn woman.

It’s the perfect arrangement. Carole knows she can make a success of the movie and Connor wants to work with her. But as they grow closer, Connor determines to find out her secret. Can love overcome the boundaries of fear? Or will Carole’s past return to plague them both?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Connor pulled the linking rings back out of their velvet bag and began practicing with the engagement ring on them. “I may need your help, too.”
“With the trick?” She raised her eyebrows. “I’m not sure I’m the one—”
“Nonsense. You know how it works. You just have to catch it correctly.” He tossed the ring to her. She caught it neatly, but the engagement ring went flying.
“Damn.” She cursed softly. “I thought I could do that.”
“No, you weren’t sure. You said so.” He found the engagement ring and replaced it on the linking ring. He fixed her with a stern look. “Be certain.”
“Okay.” She shrugged, but she knew what he was talking about. Every movement in magic—or any showmanship, really—had to be done with certainty. No rethinking yourself or doubts allowed. The audience should never be aware that you might not know what you’re doing. And so she banished any doubts and looked at him expectantly.
“And don’t look at me like that.” He twirled the rings in the air, absently connecting and disconnecting them. She knew how it was done, but he’d gotten so good at it, she couldn’t catch him.
She laughed. “Why not?”
He paused in the act of juggling the rings, caught them and displayed them all connected with the engagement ring dangling at the bottom. “Because you make it hard for me to be certain.”
She tilted her head, wondering what he meant…
Interview with Michelle Garren Flye
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I had to think about this for a bit, but I think my favorite part comes at the beginning when Connor’s being a bit too flirtatious and Carole lays down her ground rules. I like it for two main reasons. First, it shows that Carole may have been a victim in the past, but she’s well prepared to protect herself now. Second, Connor’s response sets him up to be the perfect foil for her. He’s a good guy and he respects her laying down rules from the beginning, but he refuses to be lumped in with the people who actually need those rules.
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book who would it be? And what would you do during that day?
Walt. He’s my favorite character thus far in the series. He’s kind and courteous, loves kids and he sails. That’s what we’d do. We’d find a boat and go sailing all day. And maybe he could teach me a few of his magic tricks. Have to keep it platonic, though, because he’s totally in love with Sabrina and I’m not going to mess with that.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
This is a bit of a trick question, isn’t it? I mean, I could say The Bible because it’s the most successful book ever written, or I could say Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone because then I’d be rich. But really, what I’d like to be is the author of a book that really made a difference. So, maybe, The Great Gatsby?
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My characters are always from my imagination, but there are usually bits and pieces that I recognize from reality. For instance, Connor is a conglomeration of many different movie stars—I’m fairly certain I recognize some Johnny Depp and Chris Hemsworth and even a bit of Tom Cruise in him. I didn’t start out intending to do that, though. I started out to create a compelling character who could be in the movies, and I guess I used bits of real people to do that.
5. What made you want to become a writer?
I’ve just kind of always been a writer. I wrote short stories when I was about seven years old and my mom said, hey, maybe you’ll be an author when you grow up. And I figured if it involved making up stories and writing them down, I was okay with that. I never made a decision to become a writer, I just wrote. And I still do.
EXCERPT:
“There is one thing we must do,” Liam interrupted my thoughts, and I startled, sitting up to face him. “I have made a second vow. My allegiance. But now more than ever we must convince my father of the strength of our bond.”
I stood and bolted across the room to stop in front of the window. “You know how I feel about this, Liam.”
He rose to his feet and crossed his arms. “It’s the only way I can truly protect you from my father. It would be binding.”
“Somehow, I don’t believe that. I have seen how the Fae treat so-called binding laws.” I stared into the garden below writhing in a mass of vines, the giant moon hanging low in the sky, unmoving. The sky remained a bottomless shade of black, a hideous abyss that never changed. How did a garden grow in this eternal night? Despite the shadows, pale flowers bloomed en masse, their delicate faces turned toward the moonlight, seeking whatever life they could find. My reflection in the window stretched across the wretched scene below, a stark face, hollow eyes.
Liam stood beside me, the muscles in his shoulders tensing. “I must fight for my father, I swore to that. But as my wife, you have a better chance of survival while we work toward breaking your curse. No one can hurt you then. It’s how marriage works here. They will leave you alone.”
I snorted. “You make it sound so romantic.”
“Do you want me to seduce you?” Liam growled, running his fingers through his hair. “Would you like me to tell you how your eyes are the color of rain? Your hair as scarlet as a red sky at sea? I can create endless metaphors for you, Catherine.”
“Stop.” I rolled my eyes and blew my hair out of my face.
“Why won’t you accept my protection?” His voice rose, laced with anger. “In my age, we didn’t place much stock in love. Marriage was a transaction like any other.”
“I don’t care about love,” I exclaimed, throwing my hands in the air.
“Good!” Liam shouted over me, his fists clenched at his side. “Then it shouldn’t matter to you.”
Of course it mattered. It was one thing to give my blood to Liam, as ghastly as that was, but marriage was impossible. In spite of what Liam said, it meant a partnership, closeness, intimacy. Perhaps I could have done that with another Fae, someone who didn’t spark a bolt of electricity down my spine each time his thumb grazed over mine, every time he glanced at me with his big, unnaturally blue eyes. It was never like that with Stephen, or the few partners I had in college. My body was present, and yet faraway. It was the only way I could bear to be touched. The price I paid. A favor, you might say. I transported myself to another place or another time. When I stood next to Liam, though, I was frightfully aware of my body. Every curve, every strand of my hair. My lips dried, forcing me to lick them incessantly, and my hands sweated, making me want to wipe them on my jeans. Even in that moment, all the hairs on the back of my neck rose stick-straight, my senses aware of his hot gaze on my cheek as I stood there dumb, stricken. That’s what he couldn’t understand. It mattered. It mattered too much.
“Can I think about it?” I said in a small voice.
Liam inhaled a great gust of air, preparing a speech, but then his lips closed tight. “Yes, of course.” He blinked hard several times and then turned around, plumping up the pillows on the bed. “You are exhausted. You need sleep. Things will be clearer in the morning.”
“It’s never morning here,” I said in a faint voice.
He folded back the blanket and motioned for me to sink between the sheets. “Sleep now.”
I walked to the edge of the bed and sat beside him, meeting his intense gaze.
“I’m not tired,” I whispered.
Liam’s knuckle grazed my temple. “You’re lying.”
“Stop reading my mind.”
“I’m not,” he said softly. “I can feel you.”
The air crackled between us, and his breath was haggard, his pupils dilated. I leaned into it. The kiss. The world crystalized, everything focusing to a fine point, the details sharp and close. I closed my eyes, and his lips pressed to mine, and it was the sun. The morning. Pure light. Whatever scraping darkness pushed against my soul, Liam pushed it back with his mouth, with his hands in my hair. His name bloomed inside of me like one of those pale flowers in the garden, but it wasn’t need I felt. It was joy, the turn of a season like the turn of the earth. And I wanted it to grow. I wanted it so badly.
SNEAK PEEKS:
A Wonderful Life by Mimi Barbour
Prologue
“Clarence, you haven’t stopped watching Noel Bradford for days. What in the world is happening to that young man?”
“I’m glad you noticed my preoccupation, Sir. I’m afraid he’s not doing too well. Do you remember a man called George Bailey?”
“Certainly, I do. Wasn’t he the reason you got your wings?”
“Yes, that’s him. Well poor Noel Bradford is heading in the same direction; he’s on the bridge right now, ready to jump. I’m thinking it’ll take the same interference to stop him from killing himself that it took to prevent George from doing the same thing many years ago.”
“I see. Then what are you waiting for, Clarence? You must go and save him.”
“I suppose you’re right. I just hate the thought of that icy water. It took me forever to warm up the last time.”
“Clarence, if you stop that poor fellow from ruining all the lives of the people who will one day love him, I’ll send you the wherewithal to get warm, now off with you. There’s no time to waste.”
Chapter One
Noel Bradford never believed himself to be a coward, a weakling who gave up in troubled times, a man whose shoulders were so narrow they couldn’t bear misfortune.
He was wrong.
Four days ago, when the police had knocked on his door to give him the horrifying news that his parents and their driver, his only brother, had all been killed in a car accident, he’d thought nothing could get worse.
They were heading to their favorite resort in Aspen when their car careened over the bank of the mountainous road, dropping into a lake probably 400 feet below. The back end of the car, where the license plate could be seen through binoculars, proved it was their vehicle and the chance of any survivors was nil.
A Royal White Christmas by Leanne Banks
Chapter One
A baying howl cut through the early December night, even through the walls of the cottage Brice rented. He glanced up from the material he was studying and the baying howl echoed again. The fireplace crackled, and Brice knew the snow was still falling.
Again, the baying howl broke through the quiet.
Sighing, Brice rose from his laptop and peered out the window. The floodlights revealed nothing. He was going to have to brave the cold, he supposed.
Tugging on his boots, jacket and gloves, he opened the door and trudged outside. “Talk to me beagle or hound,” he muttered.
Another howl cut the air. Several moments later, Brice found the beagle wagging its tail, its leash wrapped around a tree trunk. The beagle whined and barked. He immediately noted that the dog was female. “Well, good evening to you, Miss. A fine mess you’re in. Let me help you out.” He unwound the leash and waited for the beagle to run for freedom. Instead the dog came at him and licked his hand.
“I know you have an owner,” he said. “That’s a nice leash.”
The beagle continued to nuzzle at him and whine.
“I guess you can stay the night. It’s a nasty one,” he said and looked at a tag. “Brandi,” he read. “I’ll give your owner a call, but you can stay the night.”
Brice pulled off some chicken and rice from his leftovers and offered it to the dog. She gobbled it up quickly. “You have a good appetite,” he said and dialed the number on the dog tag. The number rang and rang then disconnected. Brice frowned. “That’s not good,” he muttered to himself and punched in the number again.
