Lana

I knew it would end in disaster, but I didn’t listen to reason. I didn’t care. Because I loved him so much.

Kalvin Kennedy ruled my heart.

Until he destroyed it.

Shattered it so completely that I became someone else. Someone I loathed. Someone who repeatedly lied to her loved ones.

So, I ran.

From him. From myself. Desperate to hide my new reality.

But I could only run so far.

When he reappears in my life, I’m terrified. Unbelievably scared of facing the consequences of my actions.

Never mind that I still love him and want him so badly—there’s too much at stake now.

How can I trust him with the biggest secret of all when he’s likely to rip my world apart again?

Kalvin

Lana was always far too good for me. Everyone knew it but her.

I tried to stay away, but I was weak.

And I hurt her.

Crushed her until she barely resembled herself. Forced her to follow a path she would never have willingly chosen.

And then she was gone.

And my world has never felt as empty, as lonely.

She begged me to stay away. Not to find her. To forget she ever existed.

But that’s like asking me to slice my heart in two and toss half aside.

I’ve never believed in fate, but when I rock up to the University of Florida, I’m ready to eat my words.

Because she’s here. Like I hoped she would be. And I’m determined to prove I deserve a second chance.

Guest post:

What you read as a teenager is probably not what you
read as an adult. When did this change and what have you noticed in your
reading list that is different?

Although I was mostly into horror books as a
teenager, I rarely read that genre anymore. Don’t get me wrong I still like a
good scare, it’s just that no one has elevated past the initial bumps in the
night which enamored me as a teen. The
Shining, Carrie, Ghost Story, Watchers, Phantoms
—these books were eye
opening thrills for someone on the cusp of adulthood. Romance wasn’t really my
thing; a few Danielle Steel books here and there mixed in with some Catherine
Coulter were tossed into my TBR list. However, my problem with the genre at the
time was mostly the women were damsels in distress. Since my mind doesn’t work
that way, I stuck with the creatures under the bed.

Around college a shift happened where suspense
became my main focus—dominant women who had to hunt down the killer before the
maniac turned the tables and hunted them. These books were fun to read, and my
feminism card was never called into question. Unfortunately, the backdrop was
always dim. Wallowing around in the darkness of suspense took a toll on my
imagination, which forced me to find lighter fare. I stumbled upon Nora
Roberts, Jennifer Cruise, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. These masters of
romance don’t do victims. Instead, they do fierce women in screwed up
situations. I can deal with that more so than the chick who needs to be saved.
A lot of historicals use this device, since real history wasn’t so hip to
women’s lib it was just easier to put the heroine in the hands of a strong buck
of a man.

As of late my reading list has taken another
shift—kick ass witches, werewolf shifters, and a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like who
doubles as a detective. I must need a good laugh because all these books are
light and fun and not one damsel in distress. Don’t get me wrong, if any of my
horror peeps put out a new book I’ll be the first in line. If Beverly Jenkins
decides to give me a feisty heroine in an era that didn’t have working plumbing
I’m there. My reading list is ever-changing and I am open to almost anything.

The one thing I know for sure is I will never give up on a quick thinking
women.

About the Author:

Candi Fox, co-host of the wildly popular radio show Candi and Company with over 900 thousand listeners began her venture in the paranormal at the tender age of two, when she witnessed her first apparition. From that moment on the paranormal seemed to follow her. No matter where she moved, the house she lived in the house next door, or the house down the street always seemed to be haunted.

She often wondered if she drew the spirits to her. Little did she know that she was indeed a magnet of sorts. It wasn't until she was in her late twenties that she found people who could not only explain her gifts, but would also help her hone them. Armed with this new knowledge she began to openly explore hauntings and other paranormal phenomena.

Growing up in Indiana lent her the opportunity to explore many famous haunted places including the Hannah House, which was once part of the Underground Railroad. A little over two years ago she moved to Tulsa, OK and has began to explore the haunted landscape in a new state.

Candi lives with her husband, and furry children in Tulsa. She is passionate about the occult, saving and rehabilitating horses, horseback riding, magic, all things mystical and has her Reiki Mastery.

She uses her own paranormal experiences as well as her own life traumas to write from a grounded and realistic perspective about subjects that are hard to talk about and even harder to feel for yourself.

Interview with Candi Fox

How did you come up with name of this book?
I went through about 20 different title ideas before I settled on Harlequin’s Deception. Harlequin is a play off the main character’s name Harley and a play from the ancient harlequin’s who were sometimes seen as clowns. I can’t give you any more details without giving away plot.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
I read a lot of different genres from the classics to paranormal. Right now I tend to read more paranormal than anything because it’s what I’m writing.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I need noise. My brain focuses better with background noise going on. I can focus on the story at hand. If it’s quiet then I tend to think randomly.

If you could choose one of your books to be made into a movie which would it be and why? My latest one Harlequin’s Deception. I would love to see the shift. The characters are larger than life, you love them or hate them. Either way you can really sink your teeth into the storyline.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time? I have several started. I try and focus on just one at a time. When an idea won’t shut up I will at least give it a few chapters so it will be silent long enough for me to finish my project.

The Mac Faraday Mystery Series:

Buy the Audiobook ~ Book
Book Description:

Question: what do you get the man with everything?

Answer: when that man is the heir of the late mystery writer Robin Spencer, retired homicide detective Mac Faraday, you get him a cold case to solve.

In Shades of Murder, Mac Faraday is once again the heir to an unbelievable fortune. This time the benefactor is a collector of stolen art. But this isn't just any stolen work of art - it's a masterpiece with a murder attached to it.

Ilysa Ramsay was in the midst of taking the art world by storm with her artistic genius. Hours after unveiling her latest masterpiece, she is found dead in her Deep Creek Lake studio, and her painting is nowhere to be found.

Almost a decade later, the long lost Ilysa Ramsay masterpiece has found its way into Mac Faraday's hands and he can't resist the urge to delve into the case.

A world away, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, former JAG lawyer Joshua Thornton agrees to do a favor for the last person he would ever expect - a convicted serial killer.

The favor: solve the one murder wrongly attributed to him.

Joshua finds an unexpected ally in Cameron Gates, a spunky detective who has reason to believe the young woman known to the media only as Jane Doe, victim number four, was the victim of a copycat. Together, Joshua and Cameron set out to light a flame under the cold case only to find that someone behind the scenes wants the case to remain cold, and is willing to kill to keep it that way.

Little do these detectives know that the paths of their respective cases are on a collision course when they follow the clues to bring them together in a showdown with a killer who's got a talent for murder!

My Review:
Shades of Murder is book 3 in Lauren Carr's Mac Faraday Series. Each book in the series can be read as a stand alone. I am a huge fan of Lauren and have read or listened to several of her books. She is amazing. I love the characters n her book especially Gnarley. Gnarley is a huge German Shepherd and brings lots of humor to the series. This is one of my favorite books so far. All of hr books come with puzzles but this one wasn't a 500 piece puzzle it was a 1000 piece one. I really love playing detective along wit Mac while reading her books.

This book features the regular cast of characters as well as a few new ones. In this book a surprise package arrives at Mac's door. It is a the painting by a woman who's murder 7 years ago was never solved. The note with the painting says that it was to go to Robin, Mac's real mother or if she had passed away to her heir. The arrival of the painting has Mac reopening the cold case.

Meanwhile in Pittsburgh PA, a convicted murderer has contacted former JAG Lawyer Joshua Thornton to look into the only case he was not convicted of 8 years ago. There was one woman that was never proven he killed mainly because he dd not kill her. Joshua finds Cameron Gates who had worked on the case. Even though the powers that be does not want the case reopened Joshua and Cameron se out to solve the case.

Now comes the twists and turns. How can one woman be killed twice and so far apart in time and mileage. Joshua and Cameron follow their clues which brings them to Mac and his case. Now they need to work together to put the pieces of the puzzle together and solve the murders.

This is also not the first book I have listened to by Mike Alger. I really like listening to him. He does a great job with his voices. His energy in the story is a great. He grabs you with the feeling he puts into his reading.

Content Rating:

All of Lauren Carr's books are rated PG-13 because they are murder mysteries and will contains murder scenes. Some of the books contain violence associated with military assignments. There are some books that contain sex scenes which are not explicit. There is little profanity, no f-words.

A broadcast veteran of over 30 years, Mike Alger is best known as the award-winning Chief Meteorologist for KTVN-TV in Reno, NV. He is also a successful author, having penned the Mystery-Thriller novel "Snow Storm," and is the narrator of the audiobook of the same name.

interview with Mike Alger

Tell me a little about your background: I’ve been in broadcasting for over 30 years, most of which as the Chief Meteorologist for KTVN-TV in Reno, NV. A TV Meteorologist is kind of a funny combination of being a scientist and a performer, which is kind of a rare set of character traits, but which fits me quite well. Since I’ve been talking “professionally” for the better portion of my life, book narration is a pretty natural field for me.
How did you start narrating audiobooks?: That’s a long story. Several years ago, I wrote a mystery-thriller novel called “Snow Storm.” It was a fairly popular novel, especially here locally, and I had some requests to turn it into a ‘talking book,’ as they were known back then. So I recorded it and tried to produce and market it myself. This was back in the days of CDs being the main media for talking books. I soon found out that burning, labeling and quality controlling CDs wasn’t very practical, and I abandoned the project, but still kept the digital files. Fast forward about 14 years, and being an audiobook fan myself (I always have one playing while I am driving), I stumbled on the ACX website (Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange website), and they mentioned if you have an audiobook you’d like to market, you could do so through them. I sent mine in and they picked it up. But they also said they had a lot of titles that were looking for narrators and producers, and I thought that was something I should look into. I sent out some auditions, and now 12 audiobook titles later, I’m finding all the work I can handle.
Is there a learning curve to narrating?: Most definitely. Both from a performance standpoint as well as a production standpoint. There are a lot of subtle things you learn about creating variety in voices, but not overdoing it. Pace and flow are so important. And there are so many technical things that I have learned when it comes to editing and mastering. I think I’ve grown a lot, but there’s always more to learn.
What’s the hardest part of narrating a book?: I think the most challenging part of narration is being consistent with all the different voices. Some characters that appear early in a book may pop up again well into it, and it might be weeks before you do them again. I like to take notes as any new character appears in a book, with some key words (“think Samuel Jackson” or “old, raspy and slow” or some such) that will help me remember how I did them. Then it’s important to keep the “narrator’s” voice consistent, which can be hard when you’ve just spoken with a different voice.
Learning different accents and dialects is also a challenge. You’ll never know when a character pops up with an Irish, Russian, Latino, or even southern US accent. There’s a natural tendency to overdo it, and it can take a lot of practice to be believable.
What’s your favorite genre to narrate?: That’s kind of like asking which of my children are my favorite. I’m not sure that the genre matters as much as the quality of the writing. Lauren Carr’s books are so much fun to read, that the narrating becomes fun as well. I’ve always enjoyed the mystery genre, and to have the freedom to create and add to the character development is an absolute kick in the pants. But I’ve also done science fiction and fantasy as well…I enjoy it all as long as the writing is solid.
Are the authors (rights holders) difficult to work with?: I’m not sure why, but I have been incredibly lucky with the authors with whom I’ve collaborated. Every one so far has been very supportive and a joy to work with. Lauren Carr especially has been awesome to team up with. They all make corrections when I misinterpret, mispronounce or miss-out on something that they have in mind, but for the most part, they are incredibly supportive, and seem to enjoy hearing their works come to life as much as I do helping them to make it happen.
What do you offer that other narrators don’t?: That’s always a tough question to answer, since every narrator offers a unique set of talents, but I do think that it’s important to not only be flexible as a narrator, but to also add special touches. I am fortunate to have a talented composer/musician create unique opening and closing credit music for each of my productions…and the fact that she happens to be my beautiful wife Anita makes it even more fun. Samples used in some of our productions can be found at the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bb6p0jxj8qxvx23/AAB9RCp_IryhRZ1vmwjLDDPVa?dl=0
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to try their hand at narration?: I think the first bit of advice is be patient…both with getting jobs and also with the production process. You will likely have to send out many auditions before you get your first job, but keep at it. And keep refining your craft. There are several on-line resources for producers and narrators, from performance tips for narrators to technical help for producers. And realize it all takes time. If you are an experienced narrator/producer, you can probably expect to spend 4 or more hours to produce 1 hour of finished product.
And finally, only do this if you enjoy it…especially to begin with. There is some money to be made, but you will likely spend your first year or two “paying your dues,” so make sure that it is enjoyable. Be creative. Most of all, have fun, and keep learning.

EXCERPT

The delicate paper menu held only a few choices, and my eyes widened at the prices. I should have thought to ask where we were going before I agreed. I didn’t have the money to spend so much on dinner, especially since Peter had moved out and money was much tighter. My heart thudded in my chest as I quickly scanned for the cheapest item on the menu; even the side salad was nearly fifteen dollars. How do people afford this? Well, the salad comes with bread and a bowl of soup, so at least it should be enough to fill me up.
The waiter, clad in a white dress shirt and perfectly pressed black pants, appeared just as I laid the menu down. “Have we had enough time?” he asked politely, glancing at each of us before focusing his attention on Philip, who took the lead in ordering.
“Yes, we’ll have two glasses of your finest red wine and two plates of the steak and lobster, grilled medium well.” He handed his and Raquel’s menus to the waiter.
“Very well,” the waiter nodded and turned his attention to me.
I swallowed. “Um, I’ll have the side salad and the tomato soup.”
The waiter cocked his head. “Will that be all miss?”
My face flushed, and just as I was about to answer, Henry jumped in. “Yes, and the same for me please.” He handed our menus to the waiter.
The waiter nodded. “Yes, sir, and anything further to drink?”
Henry glanced at me; I shook my head. “No, water will be adequate for now, thank you.”
As the waiter turned away, I regarded Henry. Who was this man, and why was he being so nice to me? He caught me staring and shot me a small wink as he picked up a piece of bread.

Book Description:

This was never what I wanted, but fame in the mafia was what I got.

When you see numbers like I can, death becomes a constant threat. It lingers, waiting for you to make one wrong move. One falter. One fatal step out of line. The endless presence will drain you, layering you with guilt and regret. Until one day, you’re covered in blood. And in that moment, you realize… you’ve become the grim reaper yourself.

Nothing could stop me from saving my little sister. Nothing could weaken me… until my boss threw a blonde slave at my feet. Once I found out who she was, I should have wanted her dead.

But I had a bad habit of breaking the rules.

And I loved that she hated me.

Like a stupid man named Romeo, I fell for the daughter of the feuding family. Like an idiot named Juliet, she didn’t try to run.

And when I fell for the fair maiden, I shook a pair of dice. I smoked a cigarette, but she paid the final price. As I offered her a smile, my venom filled her core. I watched her drink my poison as her soul walked out the door.

Chapter 4 Excerpt

“I hear you’ve been looking for a government job?”
Grimsaw asked it like a question, but I knew there was no good answer. Once he
identified betrayal, there was no playing reverse psychology on him.
He tapped a gray pistol in his palm, warning me that
nothing good was about to come my way.
Everything
he did came with a price tag. He didn’t offer favors. He did things to claim
ownership over people instead. He thirsted for power, and he had a damn lot of it
too.
After crossing him like I just had, you didn’t
breathe the next day. Your fingers were shipped out to your family. That was
the end of that.
“I’m flattered you’re so frightened to lose me. I
didn’t think you would cause a ruckus over something so fatuous,” I smiled,
taking a casual glance around the warehouse. It took seconds to realize that
most of his grease monkeys had formed a threatening circle behind him. There
were at least fifteen men in blue coveralls, all ready to take me down if I
made one wrong move. “I thought we were robbing—”
“Don't play dumb with me. That was my way of leading
you down here. You know what this is.” He spun his finger around the garage,
glaring at me ruthlessly. “So, what is it?”
“Another initiation?” I guessed.
These guys were the worst thugs known to the west
coast. They were great allies to have on my side, but that wasn’t where they
stood now. I had already completed my fair share of initiations over
the past three years. I had done things I would never speak of, but this was
Grimsaw’s way of testing my loyalty now.
“This is the consequence of your behavior. I gave you
everything you needed during your darkest of times, and this is how you repay
me? By being a pussy?”
“If I was a pussy, you
wouldn’t be so upset right now,” I shrugged, welcoming the devil on my shoulder
to stand himself tall. “I’ve already done a lot of messed up shit to prove
myself to you. I won’t like it if you try to run me through hoops another
time.”
“Then you shouldn’t have chomped down on the hand that
feeds you.” Flames of fury lit up his eyes. “There are two types of people in
this world; the good and the evil. I shouldn’t have to remind you which side
you chose to leap onto. Once we ride, we die side by side.”
He kicked at the metal
pail by his feet, as if the thud would somehow convince me to put my head on
straight. It didn’t, so I watched the pail roll away unproductively instead.
“I consider you a pal, Garciez,”
he carried on. “But we're not homies right now. You've been the brains behind
the operations for a while, but I draw the line at disloyalty. None of your
talents will help you out in this moment. I got no problem lining the streets
with your half-breed blood. I’ve got years on you, monkey.”
I watched his fists tighten and decompress in an
unnervingly steady rhythm. Everything about him reeked of temper. After knowing
him for a few years, I could always tell when Grimsaw had met his breaking
level. He wasn’t there quite yet, but I was sure pushing him close.
“You wouldn’t know how to rob a lemonade stand without
me.” I probably should have let him domineer, but I chose the alternative
instead. “You could kill me like you did Antonio, but you would never make this
kind of coin again. I taught you how to rob a bank. It wasn’t the other way
around. You know death doesn’t scare me.”
As I met his dark scrutiny, my smile was cocky.
Grimsaw had turned me into his own brand of robot. He
had desensitized me over the past three years. In return, he’d managed to make
me numb. This numbness brought a lack of fear, because I knew Grimsaw didn’t
want to kill me. He would try every possible tactic before allowing things to
reach that head. If he were to lose me, he would lose his ease of acquiring
money too. As it stood, I was the one quenching most of his thirst for wealth.
“You might not fear death…” Grimsaw’s eyebrow arched vindictively.
The dislodged look on his face caused my guts to wrench like bar rags. “The
thing with disloyalty, amigo? I’m better at it than you are.”
Only one face entered my mind.

Interview with Skyla Murphy
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I pull inspiration from everything I do; the good times, the bad, the sad, the people I meet, the humor I find, and the general situations I experience. It probably comes from being somewhat of an introvert too. Whenever I have spare time, my thoughts automatically go to writing. I’m a mountain fanatic, and something about the outdoors makes me feel creative. I find some of my best writing comes from the moments I spend in nature.
How did you do research for your book?
I thought about renewing my library pass and hitting up the card catalogue, but then I realized we have Google now and I didn’t need to! (Score!)
Research included 60% of my time spent on social media doing the opposite of what I really needed to be doing. I’ve never liked more pictures of cute animals than I have in the past four months. When I did decide to stop scrolling through my Instagram feed, I generally used the Internet for more productive ways of research.
Most of the ideas and workings of the story were created over a few weeks of imaginative conversations with a few friends. The overall idea of being able to see pin codes and bank account numbers through another’s eyes was introduced to came from a conversation I had with some friends about which superpowers would be the coolest to have. Although I would personally rather be able to transfer myself anywhere in the world via teleportation, being able to thieve identities is what Hell Will Rise revolves around. Other than stigmatized mafia business/hierarchy affiliation, there wasn’t an insane amount of research necessary… which was probably a good thing… or I would have liked even more puppy pictures!
Do you have another profession besides writing?
Although I don’t find it nearly as fun as writing, I work on and off throughout the oil sands of Alberta running tool cribs around worksites. I enjoy the lifestyle, which makes me keep going back, but to be able to write fulltime would be the ultimate goal. It would be nice to never see another work camp again. Peanut butter and jam sandwiches get old quick, and the soup is always questionable!
If you could go back in time, where would you go?
Tough one. If not to the 1940’s to pick Albert Einstein’s brain apart, I think I would go all the way back to 1560 and have a conversation with Nostradamus. I have a serious fascination with him, which probably relates to my obsession with conspiracy theories. It’s true that Nostradamus could have just been some crazy guy who managed to make a few good predictions, but the philosopher in me thinks it was more than that.
What is your next project?
Right now, I’m busy typing away at the second book in The Bloodthirst Mafia Series. I’ll be working on the third after that. I only plan to write a trilogy, but I might do a spinoff of some of the other characters eventually. We’ll see where time takes me. 😊
