The Mac Faraday Mystery Series:

Buy the Audiobook ~ Book
Book Description:

Old loves die hard...and in the worst places.

In Old Loves Die Hard, Lauren Carr continues the rags-to-riches story of Mac Faraday, an underpaid homicide detective who inherits 270 million dollars and an estate on Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, from his birth mother on the day his divorce becomes final.

Mac is settling nicely into his new life at Spencer Manor when his ex-wife Christine shows up-and she wants him back! Before Mac can send her packing, Christine and her estranged lover are murdered in Mac's private penthouse suite at the Spencer Inn, the five-star resort built by his ancestors.

The investigation leads to the discovery of cases files for some of Mac's murder cases in the room of the man responsible for destroying his marriage. Why would his ex-wife's lover come to Spencer to dig into Mac's old cases?

With the help of his new friends on Deep Creek Lake, Mac must use all of his detective skills to clear his name and the Spencer Inn's reputation, before its five-stars - and more bodies - start dropping!

My Review:
Mac Faraday is back. His ex wife shows up drunk saying she wants to get back together. Mac Takes her to the inn and checks her in to sleep it off. The next morning he shows up to meet her for breakfast and finds not only her but her estranged lover,  who she left Mac for, both murdered in Mac's private suite.

Once sort of  being cleared as being a suspect he has to help his 1/2 brother the Police Chief solve the murders. The strange part of the whole thing is the lover has shown up with a handful of files from Mac's old murder cases. Mac needs to arrest the killer so his Kids can have closure and also to figure out why McGuire was digging around in his old cases.

I am  huge fan of Lauren Carr. I have read several of her books. I love all of the twists and turns in the books. The books are always pretty fast moving but they also drag you in as well as make you feel like a detective. I usually have a list of my own suspects, but am usually wrong when I pinpoint the killer, with all of the twists. I love how there is a touch of humor, a touch of light romance, and no real strong language.

I also like that that with the Mac Faraday books, you do not have to read them in order to follow the story line. Each book can be read as stand alone. I have read the last few books of this series already so am back tracking with this book. But it could be the next book in the series instead of being the 2nd book.

I did listen the audio book. I was quite happy with James C Lewis' narration. his voice is very expressive. He makes you hear what the characters are feeling. I really like that in narrator. He also does a great job with changing his voice for each character.

Content Rating:

All of Lauren Carr's books are rated PG-13 because they are murder mysteries and will contains murder scenes. Some of the books contain violence associated with military assignments. There are some books that contain sex scenes which are not explicit. There is little profanity, no f-words.

Author Interview with Lauren Carr

Later this year, your twentieth mystery, Twofer Murder, will be coming out. What took you so long to start having your books produced in audio?
Actually, I have had my earlier books produced in audio several years ago. When my first book, A Small Case of Murder, came out one of my friends instantly asked when my book would be available in audio. My eyes glazed over and I stammered out, “Eventually.”
This friend only listened to her books in audio. She had a long commute to work and that was when she would listen to her books. She would go through a couple books a week.
Not long after that, I discovered that another friend only did audiobooks. She listened to them on cassette. She loved books, but couldn’t read due to extremely bad eyesight. While she wasn’t legally blind, her eyesight was so poor that the only way she could enjoy a book was if it was available in audio.
Back then, audiobooks were available on cassette or compact discs. They didn’t have digital downloads like they do now. I considered myself lucky when a traditional audiobook publisher picked up my first three books to be produced in audio (compact disc and digital download)—until I started receiving my royalty checks. I was lucky if I made over two hundred dollars a year! I would take a few copies of the compact discs to book events—only to have them gather dust. Eventually, I tossed them into the back of my closet, where they still rest.
Since there did not seem to be a market for audiobooks and only an occasional reader would ask for that format, I ignored it.

What changed your mind?
Readers have been asking for my books in in audio with increasing frequency. Then, Amazon suggested I make my books available through their company ACX. They also pointed out that Audible, a very successful audiobook dealer, fell under their umbrella. Audible is the leading seller of audiobooks.
By going through ACX, I would essentially be self-publishing my own books—thus, keeping all of my rights. So, this was quite appealing to me.

What was it like hearing your books narrated as an audiobook?
Surreal. In the last year, I have been working with three audiobook producers to make my entire backlist available in audio for mystery fans. That’s thirteen books that I have written in the last five years. Two more books will be coming out in audiobook later on this year. As a result, I have found myself listening to books that I have not looked at in a very long time. So they’re new to me again. It’s like when you look through a photo album from high school ten years later. There are some pictures that have you scratching your head wondering “What was I thinking?” But then there are also renewed memories of things you had said or done that make you marvel at how witty you were. Listening to these mysteries that I had written as far back as five years ago, I have found myself surprised at plot twists that I had created that I myself have forgotten about. Likewise, I’ve also found myself asking, “What was I thinking when I created that character?” Overall, it’s been a blast working with these three very talented producers in bringing my mysteries to life, so to speak.

Tell us about Mac Faraday, your protagonist in Old Loves Die Hard. Give us one of his strengths and one of his weaknesses.
The premise of the Mac Faraday mysteries is a rags to riches story. Mac Faraday was an underpaid homicide detective who inherited two-hundred-and-seventy million dollars and an estate on Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, from his birth mother on the very day his divorce became final.
Mac’s strength is his down to earth nature. Even though he is worth over $270 million, Mac Faraday does not let his wealth and power go to his head. Mac is the type of guy that you would love to meet at a pub and share a beer with. Like every good detective, he has exceptional instincts—especially when it comes to human nature. When it comes to investigating murder cases, he has the ability to put what he has learned about people during all of his years as a homicide detective to catch killers.
I would have to say some people would consider Mac’s weakness to be a strength. He does not have much patience for pretentious and arrogant people—almost to the point of being difficult when dealing with them. But, Mac has grown some during the course of the series and has learned how to play their games to his advantage to solve cases.

Do you have any upcoming projects that your fans should be looking for?
Twofer Murder will be a treat for mystery lovers because it will be two mysteries in one novel. This book will contain all of the characters from the Mac Faraday, Lovers in Crime, and Thorny Rose mysteries. The guys go fishing and get embroiled in a murder mystery. Meanwhile, the ladies go off to a murder mystery writers conference and end up wrapped up in their own mystery when an up and coming mystery writer ends up dead! Can’t beat that! Two mysteries for the price of one!

"Vigorously told deceptions and battle scenes...with a romantic thread." -Publishers Weekly review of Eolyn, Book One of the Silver Web

“Lush, evocative descriptions carry readers through an unforgettable journey.” –Kirkus Reviews review of Sword of Shadows, Book Two of the Silver Web.

Excerpt
TWO:

Anger flared in
Eolyn’s veins. She stood. Akmael rose with her.
“Speak plainly,
my Lord King. I will not be subject to this cat-and-mouse game. If you do not
trust me, if you do not believe me, then say so.”
“I trust your
heart, Eolyn, but your heart has led you to ill-advised decisions in the past.
For this reason, I am not always inclined to trust your judgment.”
“For the love of
the Gods! I am not the confused and frightened girl I was when my brother took
up arms against you.”
“No, but you
must understand the dilemma you have put me in.”
“The dilemma I
have put you in?”
“If you knew of
Ghemena’s plan and did not inform me, you were party to treason. If you did not
know, then your authority over the magas is uncertain. Either way, the magas must
remain bound and imprisoned until this conflict is resolved.”
Eolyn blinked
and stepped away.
Not even Thelyn
had put it so bluntly.
“The magas have
lived in peace in Moisehén for more than a decade.” Her voice shook, and her
hands were clenched at her sides. “You cannot let the action of one woman—”
“Three women.
The blatantly treasonous act of three women, all devoted students of yours.
They have brought war upon us, Eolyn. Who knows how many others among your
followers support them?”
“The magas who remain
in my service have done nothing to merit suspicion.”
“All magas merit
suspicion.” Akmael hesitated at her stricken look. He let go a slow breath and
softened his tone. “There is a history here that we have not yet overcome,
Eolyn. You, of all people, must understand that. Too many of our subjects still
remember the war against my father.”
“And the purges
that followed?” she shot back.
“The violence
that tore this kingdom apart,” he conceded. “Right or wrong, the magas were
left with the blame. There are many who fear your power, Eolyn. They fear the
ambitions of all women of magic. We must manage this situation carefully, to
protect you and your daughters. To see that justice is done.”
“What Thelyn did
to my magas on your orders was not just.”
“A precautionary
measure. Nothing more.”
“You must give
me your word—” Eolyn’s voice broke. She sensed doors closing all around her.
Was there nothing he would allow? No small concession she could demand? “At
least promise me that none of my daughters will be mistreated during their
confinement.”
“Mistreated?”
“That they will
not be…That they will not be subject to the techniques once used by Tzeremond
and his mages.”
Realization
washed over Akmael’s features. He smiled and shook his head. “Come, Eolyn. The
situation is not that grim. I assure you the days of Tzeremond will not return.
We are at a momentary impasse to be endured until we determine whether this web
of treachery ends with Ghemena or begins with her. If found innocent, your
magas will be restored to their former positions. If any of them harbor
treasonous hearts, it is better we find out now before further damage is done.”
Eolyn nodded,
though she found little comfort in his reassurance.
“I have had the
rooms of the East Tower prepared for you,” Akmael said.
“What?”
“I knew you
would not be pleased,” he hastened to add, “but I do this for your own
protection.”
“My protection?”
“There are no
wards more powerful than those of the East Tower. You will stay there and the
children with you.”
“You would imprison
me? The woman you love, your Queen?”
“Your magic will
not be bound. You will be permitted visitors, and you will be allowed to leave
the confines of the tower during daylight hours, but always in my company or in
the company of guards appointed by me.”
“You cannot ask
this of me.”
“Eolyn.” He took
her gently by the shoulders. “Do not close your eyes to the delicacy of our
position. Half the court speculates it was your command that led Ghemena to
deliver Eliasara to Roenfyn.”
“You know I
would never—”
“And I, seeing
that my daughter has been stolen from me, wonder what is next in the minds of
those who plot to bring down my house and reign. Will they attempt to kill my
son? Will they try to take away my Queen? Because those two things would
destroy me, Eolyn. Me and all the futures I have imagined.”
Eolyn stared at
Akmael in disbelief. A ghostly cry echoed through her heart, the forgotten
lament of a woman betrayed.
“This is how it
began, isn’t it?” she whispered. “The confinement of your mother began just
like this.”
“Eolyn—”
“Your father
wanted only to protect her, but he never allowed her to leave. In the end it
made no difference. Kaie penetrated the wards and slew her. You remember,
Akmael. You were there.”
“My love—”
“You cannot lock
me up in that place!”
“You will not be
left alone as my mother was. Not tonight, not in any night to come.”
Akmael pressed
his lips to her forehead. He took the chain that suspended the Silver Web and
lifted the jewel gently over Eolyn’s head. As he held the amulet in the palm of
his hand, its delicate crystals glittered in the afternoon light.
“This magic can
be used to penetrate the wards,” he said.
“How?”
“That is for me
to know.” He set the silver chain around his own neck, slipping the amulet
beneath his tunic. “I promise you, Eolyn, I will be with you in every moment I
can.”
“You secure your
way into the East Tower while leaving me with no way out. At night you would
use your mother’s magic to come as a thief, a surreptitious lover, not openly
as my king and husband. Why?”
Akmael nodded to
the door that separated them from the courtiers outside. “Because they must
believe that my judgment is free from the influence of desire and love, free
from any spells a High Maga might cast.”

“They are fools
if they believe a maga can control the decisions of men! If we had such power,
I assure you this world would be a very different sort of place.”

The Other La Boheme Blitz

Literary Fiction
Date Published:  April 2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

The Other La Bohème is literary fiction that depicts the lives and loves of four friends who pursue opera singers’ careers in present-day New York City. Jennifer (soprano), Stephanie (mezzo-soprano), Henry (tenor), and John (baritone) met in music school in Manhattan, where they performed Puccini’s famous opera La Bohème at their graduation concert. After graduation they banded together as a group called the Dolci Quattro, pledging to support one another in their professional pursuits. Several years later, they have landed the roles of Mimi, Musette, Marcello, and Rodolfo in the nearly forgotten opera La Bohème by Leoncavallo—known as “the other La Bohème”—which is to be produced by the New York Bel Canto Opera.

Alluding to the opera form, the novel opens with an Overture, a hymn that leads into Act I. Scene 1 begins with arias and a duet sung by Henry and Stephanie in the Café Momus. Jennifer and John come in, and they congratulate each other on their new roles. Immediately, though, the thoughts of the current state of their personal lives cool their enthusiasm.

Each Scene that follows is narrated alternately by one of the four members of the Dolci Quattro. As the story unfolds, Jennifer discovers that her fiancé, Richard, an investment banker and a fiction writer, is having an affair with another woman. Stephanie struggles to find a steady love, while perturbed by a strained relationship with her father, a billionaire hedge fund manager, who abandoned her late mother. Henry faces a pressure from his family to renounce his bohemian life for a more respectful career as he meets his new love, Christine, a poet. John receives a summons for divorce from the lawyer of his wife Michelle, a painter.

Set in the rich artistic backdrop of New York City, as the novel proceeds from Act I to Act II, Act III, Intermezzo, and Act IV, the Dolci Quattro’s lives and loves go through ups and downs in joy and despair, while true to their pledge they give one another much-needed moral support. As the opening night nears, the Dolci Quattro make their utmost efforts to perfect their singing for the opera that will determine their future.

Interview with Linda O Johnston

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

I always enjoy the beginnings of my stories as I introduce, or reintroduce, the characters, then start developing the situation about to occur.  Oh, and I especially enjoy when dogs first appear!  In this case, that's on the first few pages of Bad to the Bone when Biscuit, Carrie Kennersly's toy poodle-terrier mix, trades nose sniffs with Rigsley, a larger gray dog owned by a visiting friend... who has a lot to do with the story.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I'd love to spend a day with the protagonist, Carrie Kennersly.  I'd ask her to show me how to make some of her healthy dog treats at Barkery & Biscuits, then take a walk to the Knobcone Veterinary Clinic where she still works part time as a vet tech--taking her dog Biscuit along, of course. There, I'd like to meet head vet Arvie and love interest Reed.  On the way we could stop at Cuppa-Joe's and I could meet the Joes. And then we could go visit Mountaintop Rescue and Billi Matlock.  Maybe somewhere along the line I could also meet Carrie's brother Neal and others in the stories...    But, yes, my first choice of who to spend time with is Carrie.  And maybe I could even discuss the latest murder she's investigating with her...

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

This is a hard question to answer, so I'm not going to, at least not specifically!  Since my favorite books contain dogs and suspense and romance, when I read any good mystery that contains dogs I want to cheer the author.  But a specific one?  Nope!

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

My characters are all my imagination--although occasionally a victim is inspired by someone in my life who's done me wrong!  Not that I'd really harm them, of course.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

I always wanted to write, from the time I was in grade school!  I started a sci-fi epic in my teens that featured a boy and girl traveling through space.  Maybe that led to my first published novels: time travel romances.
