tour for CALLING THE REAPER by Jason Pere

CALLING THE REAPER
by Jason Pere

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The time of the Unity has ended. Now, the realm of man is stranded between Paradise and Purgatory. The Valkyrie and Reaper battle over the fate of all who pass from the land of the living and into the afterlife.
Eight mortal spirits from vastly different worlds tread the same, inevitable path toward their last, crucial decision. Within them all exists the defining conflict every man must face—to look upon the end of their life with glory and honor, or to give credence to their baser longings, calling the Reaper to their own demise.
In this rich, harrowing tale of pride, deceit, honor, vengeance, and redemption, each individual must battle their inner turmoil, facing the sacrifices they have made before their unavoidable end in the land of the living.
But their last day in life is also their first day of death amidst the terrors of the underworld. Lord Master Death wants them all…and the real battle has only just begun.
Excerpt Two:
Aristo reached far within and blocked all the pain shooting through his being. I am Praetorian, my flesh does my bidding. Again, he commanded his eyes to open. When he finally managed to force them open, the agony consuming his head must have felt very much like staring straight into the blazes of the sun. He felt the tearing of skin as his world instantly turned from the darkest black to a moment of brightest white. His eyes watered heavily and he blinked, trying to clear away at least some of the dried blood which had sealed his eyes shut. For several moments, everything was a blur, but then he could distinguish colors and shapes again.
He nearly wished that he had in fact been blinded; he would have at least been spared the image before him. Aristo had been wounded in battle before, but never like this. His body lay covered in a blanket of dried crimson. No one would have known that he bore the deep purple uniform of the Praetorian Legion had they even bothered to look at him. It was confounding that he had bled so profusely and could still draw breath, still feel the beat of his heart within his chest. A moment of warrior’s pride overtook him when he studied his twisted form and realized the excruciating pain was not unwarranted. Then he remembered.
Captured, he thought. I’ve been captured.
My Review:
I have to admit I don't usually read books of short stories but I was really surprised by this one. I set down with this book and could not put it down. I read late into the night, went to bed, got back up and read some more then finished it the next morning. All of the stories were very interesting. They were quick stories. There are 8 stories in the book. Each story was about a different person in a different time and land. How they lived and what led to their deaths. In just the few pages of each story, the author truly introduced you to the character, let you understand why the people led the lives they did, why they made the choices they did, and in the end you understood why they made their choices, right or wrong . For example the Pirate as a child was saved from a disease by his sister, later on she was struck by a sleeping disease and he over the years done everything he could to find the cure for her.  In his quest he pillaged and murdered from ships he knew to carry medical supplies hoping to find the cure for her. When he finally found a person who could cure her, he himself was killed. This is just one story though. The others all have different reasoning in the people making their decisions.
I love how the author did not waste time and paper getting to the point of each persons story. You were filled with just enough background to drag you into each story.  The stories were not overwhelming either. Though they may be short stories you had everything you needed.
I will be looking for the next book in this series to see if at some point the author ties all of these people together in the afterlife.
INTERVIEW with Jason Pere
Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?
No I don’t. The closest I come to wanting to be someone else if wishing that I was just a more successful version of myself.
What did you do on your last birthday?
My wife and I took our brand new puppy for his first walk around the neighborhood. I saw my younger brother graduate from high school. We ended the night with some baked goods, carrot cake rolls if I recall correctly.
What part of the writing process do you dread?
All the post production stuff. I loathe re-reading and revisions, let alone editing for grammar and spelling. I think that is probably why, once I get a first draft done, I immediately look for an editor.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
Sometimes I have a scene that I have difficulty producing. When that happens I just power thru and pack text on the page. I don’t worry about the quality of my writing. If I’m struggling to get words out I just work on filling the page first. Once I get something written the rest of a scene becomes exponentially easier to finish. A lot of times a troubling idea might undergo a metamorphosis while I am writing and the scene may end up vastly different than my initial concept.
Tell us about your latest release.
My latest release is my very first children’s book, titled “Sir Percival and the Nightmare”. It is a warm tale about a young boy and his stuffed bedtime guardian. It illustrates the importance of bravery and introduces readers to the most courageous teddy bear that they will ever meet.
Virtual Book Tour for Audio Book: Food Junkies by Vera Tarman & Phil Werdell and read by Lisa Bunting
Food Junkies
by Vera Tarman & Phil Werdell
Read by Lisa Bunting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Non-Fiction, self-help

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Is it possible to be addicted to food? When does indulging in 'comfort' food become substance abuse? Is it possible that there is more than a lack of will power at work when someone can't stop eating? In Food Junkies, Vera Tarman and Phil Werdell explain what is - and isn't - food addiction, tackling this complex and poorly understood problem through the stories of many survivors and from the perspectives of medical researchers/practitioners. They break down the science behind the research so that anyone can understand it, and take a fresh look at obesity, overeating, binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. For people struggling with these issues — and their families — recognizing the condition is the first step to gaining the kind of support and advice they need.
Food Junkies (finalist in the 2016 Voice Arts Awards) offers hope and guidance. Read by Lisa Bunting, according to one audible customer review, her "calming voice assists with decreasing the shame so often found with addiction and can open the listener up to actually hearing," while another noted the audiobook version "brought the science to life in a different way than the book. It made it even more real as one can't 'skim' or 'rush' through the life-changing content."
INTERVIEW
1. What are four things you can’t live without?
I could not live without my longstanding partner, Cathy, my food plan (which is very regimented), my beloved dog, Maddie, and my mission to talk about food addiction.  All of these keep me going throughout the day, weeks, and months – the daily minutia of life. Writing about food addiction is probably the thing that gives me the most strength to endure obstacles. Presumably, if I were to lose any of the other three, this one  ‘gets me through the night’.
2. What is your favorite television show?
I really like the British Detective shows ie Happy Valley is the latest that I really enjoyed. It is full of real life events, and has compassion and love, not just grit and violence. However, I rarely watch TV anymore. I prefer to read.
3. If you could be any character, from any literary work, whom would you choose to be? Why?
I have identified with many protagonists through the years. I am a very big reader, so here are just a few examples:  Holden Caulfield, Pony boy, characters in Kurt Vonnegut’s books, David Copperfield.
Still I don’t want to be any of these people. While reading, I love that I can merge my personality and perspective to the characters I am reading. I especially like it when characters are brutally honest yet still search for redemption and optimism. I am a pragmatic realist with a flavor of optimism and love to align my tendencies to their experiences. But even in the characters that share these attributes, once the book is finished, I prefer to crawl back into my own skin.
4. What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?
Only the book – now in audible form. What I would hope for is a 2nd edition of my book, Food Junkies. If that were asked of me, it would mean that people are listening to my message. Since this issue has ever evolving info, an update will be required in a few years!
5. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
Virginia Woolf, Dostoevsky, and Samuel Beckett.  More currently – the people who have influenced me in my medical writing: Dr. Oliver Sacks, and Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Robert Lustig.
Virtual Tour: The Next Best Thing by Wendi Nunnery
About the Book
Four years ago, Emma
Fraser’s first love took his own life. Now, twenty years old and in college,
Emma and her best friend, Andy, are still mourning the loss of a friend and
brother. Nothing is the same as it once was…and things are about to change even
more.
Too heartbroken to even consider falling in love
again, Emma stays distracted by school and work. Until she meets Landon and,
for the first time ever, finds herself believing she might actually have a
future with someone. But when Deegan Burke—the man responsible for all of
Emma’s heartache—gets out of prison early, Emma is suddenly confronted by her
worst fears. And when faced with choices she never thought she’d have to make,
Emma discovers that the only person she really wants by her side is the last person
she ever expected.
excerpt from  THE NEXT BEST THING
On Saturday morning, Emma slept late. Even though she came back to Cley for holidays and summers, Emma didnt spend many weekends home during the school year like so many of her peers did. During football season, it was akin to sacrilege to miss a home game and Emma attended every single one. In the spring, she was busy picking up more hours at the Academic Success Center, where she was an English tutor. She preferred to stay on campus as much as possible and never grew tired of being there, even when she was stressed out about her classes or worrying about Elsie and Andy. Life had to be lived, and hard things still existed in Emmas sparkling college bubble, but she could always rely on Georgia Southern to be exactly what she needed. Emma might have been raised in Cley, but she was growing up in Statesboro.
She stretched out beneath the comforter and yawned deeply. With a quick glance at her phone, Emma saw that Elsie had called already and she had a text from Andy asking if shed made it home okay. Emma typed a hurried response and then padded into the bathroom for a shower.
Later, as she was finishing her first cup of coffee in the living room, the house phone rang.
Yeah, shes home, Renee said from the kitchen. Hold on.
Emma put her mug on the coffee table just as Renee came around the corner. She held the phone out to her daughter with a smile.
Its Grace, she said.
Oh! Emma exclaimed, taking the phone from her mothers outstretched hand. Hey mama, she said into the receiver.
Emma! Grace sounded like she was grinning from ear to ear, and her voice had an immediate calming effect on Emma. She hadnt realized how tense she still was until this very moment. How are you, sweetheart? Ive missed you.
Ive missed you, too. And Im good. Just glad to have a break.
I bet, Grace replied. I hope Andy hasnt been getting you into trouble.
Ha! Emma laughed. Hes been trying to get me into trouble for years. It never works.
Grace laughed, too, and Emma was glad to hear it. It never ceased to amaze her that a woman who had lost so much could still manage to find joy. Emma knew that Andy had been the one who found Jesse first, but Grace hadnt been far behind. Emmas imagination haunted her with pictures of what Jesse might have looked like, but she was certain that nothing she imagined would ever be as disturbing as reality. Grace had seen her dying son hanging in his closet, had held him up around his chest, hoping to take the pressure off his neck. Emma found out months later, when Andy would finally talk about it, that Jesse had still been alive when the cops arrived for their interview with him. But just barely. Graces firstborn son had died while she screamed for the officers to cut him down, her face pressed against Jesses chest as she strained to feel his heart beat.
Grace was Jesses mother. She had been the first one to touch Jesse as he slipped into this world, and she was the last one to touch him as he slipped out. Perhaps, Emma thought, Grace had been able to find some kind of peace in that, however fleeting.
How is Elsie doing, do you know? Grace asked.
Emma sighed heavily. Not good. I think she wants to move on, but she doesnt understand why Andy ended things. And I dont know much more than she does, to be honest.
Maybe its because hes only twenty-one? Grace offered, without the slightest hint of sarcasm. I know they were together for a long time, and I love Elsie, but being together for years doesnt necessarily mean they know each other.
Emma agreed. Thats a good point. Although Im not sure Elsie would see it that way.
Do you? Grace asked. Emma furrowed her brows together, considering. Of course she saw it that way. Now. In high school, Emma had encouraged Elsie to ask Andy out because she thought it would be fun having her two best friends together all the time. At first, Andy had rejected Elsie for reasons not unlike this breakup. But once Jesse was gone, Andy had turned to Elsie for comfort in ways Emma couldnt provide. For four years, Elsie had filled the gap between friendship and love, and somewhere along the way they all got tricked into thinking it was enough.
Andy never really wanted to be with Elsie the way she wanted to be with him, Emma replied solemnly. Its better that he ended it now.
Well, what about you? Grace asked, charging ahead. Are you dating anyone yet?
Yet.
As in, Emma, would you get around to it already?
It wasnt like Emma didnt want a boyfriend. But in high school she had made the terrible mistake of falling for the guy who turned out to be an attempted rapist, so, naturally, she was a little gun shy. Emma had been just one of many girls to hope Deegan Burke would look her way. But hoping had actually turned into looking. And looking had turned into being invited as his date for prom. Which, as everyone now knew, meant walking up on a scene Emma would never be able to erase from her memory.
Before Jesse ever broke Emmas heart, Deegan had already taught her to question it. And it was a lesson she wasnt sure she could unlearn.
No, not yet, Emma replied patiently. But Im sure someone will come along.
Maybe he already has, Grace said, sounding like the mother she was. You never know.
Emma smiled sadly to herself. Grace wasnt wrong. Someone had already come along. But he was gone now.
Yeah, she said to Grace. You never know.
Bug Bite Thing
It may be winter time according to the date, but I live in Florida. There are bugs year round and most of them do bite. The other night my Grandson was here and playing outside, he is 2. He was bit on the side of his leg by I think a mosquito. So I got to try out this Bug Bite Thing.
It is very easy to use. push the side levers down, place it over the bite and pull up on it like a syringe. I pulled until it gave me a lot of resistance then held it for about 30 seconds. It seemed that a lot of the bites swelling went down and for the next couple of hours that the kids were here he never scratched or bothered with the bite again.
My Grand Daughter who is 4 also got a bite on her arm. She kind of flipped out when the I suctioned the Bug Bite Thing. Not that it hurt but I guess I should of let her experiment with it for a second. It was new and different and she felt the pull of it like most kids got scared I guess.
This Bug Bite Thing does seem to work and it so much better and easier then sprays and creams that only seem to work until it dries into the skin. My Grand Son never did scratch his bite again and it was totally gone the next day.  This also needs no batteries.
