Pans Labyrinth meets Once Upon A Time in this fantasy thriller from Carys Jones

Returning home one weekend Marie Schneider’s life changes forever when her car collides with a lorry on the motorway and she is left fighting for her life. Whilst in a coma, Marie awakens in the fantastical world of Azriel which appears to be right out of the pages of a Fairy Tale book. Here, Marie learns that she is their long lost Princess North, and that Azriel is where she truly belongs.

When Marie eventually wakes from her coma her thoughts of Azriel are still very present in her mind and she struggles to adjust to her 'normal' life. Everyone around her insists that Azriel is just a figment of her imagination but as she tries to recover from her wounds people start approaching her on the street, insisting that Azriel needs her and that she must return there at once.

Confused, Marie tries to discover which reality is the right one. Could she truly be a long lost princess from another world or is she just losing her mind? As the world of Azriel starts to creep in to her current life it gets harder for her to ignore that perhaps she really is Azriel's Princess after all...

Excerpt:

Beginnings

The unusually bitter October wind pulled at loose strands of Marie’s hair as she walked briskly along the busy pavement. Checking her watch she noticed with a plunging sensation in her stomach that she was already running five minutes late.

“Damn it,” she cursed aloud as she tried to increase her walk from brisk to fast. Her high heeled shoes clipped manically against the floor creating a sharp staccato soundtrack to her commute.

With as much speed as the six inches of her stilettos would afford her, Marie descended down from the pavement and the ominous grey clouds overhead into the underbelly of the city and the tube railway system.

Despite having lived in London for almost eighteen months Marie still struggled to accept the infiltration of her personal space each time she rode the tube to work. People would push up against her as though she were completely invisible. She’d learnt to use her bony elbows as a weapon against the more persistent of intruders. Clutching her handbag tightly to her chest she boarded her train, moving with the same militant precision as the commuters around her. Everyone seemed to move with such urgency, as though their very being depended on boarding the waiting train before them.

As the train surged in to motion and swept the passengers deeper into the city, Marie dared to remove one hand from her hand bag to wipe wearily at her eyes, careful not to smudge the mascara she’d barely had time to apply.

Marie was tired. The previous night, like all the nights before, the twenty seven year old had struggled to sleep. She lay awake, anxious, as though she were waiting for something though she had no idea what.

It took twenty minutes for Marie’s train to arrive in central London. Not quite long enough to remove her Kindle and delve in to the latest fantasy novel she was reading. She thought about the story as she looked forlornly out of the train windows. Endless miles of nothingness sped by. She missed travelling through the countryside and looking out and seeing endless fields of luscious, green grass. Marie Schneider was a city girl by necessity, not choice. She’d grown up amongst trees and fields not sky scrapers and stop signs.

Every morning as she stood on the tube she wished the same thing; that she didn’t have to go to work that day that instead she could stay home and read and get lost in another world.

“You spend far too much time with your head in books,” her mother would note with disapproval.

“Reading stories won’t get you anywhere,” she’d add callously. Marie would just roll her eyes. Her mother didn’t understand the magic which existed within a great story. She was too pragmatic, existing only in the moment. But Marie dared to dream bigger. She always secretly harboured the belief that she was meant for great things, that her destiny would somehow be wondrous.

Yet as she stepped off the tube and an overweight man in a suit already covered in sweat pushed a little too close up against her Marie realised she was hanging on to her romantic notions of a better life with a very thin thread.

“Excuse you!” Marie exclaimed as the man peeled himself off her and headed towards the escalators. He didn’t so much as turn back and offer an apologetic glance.

“Chivalry is so dead,” Marie muttered to herself as she straightened her blue dress which was adorned with patterns of white tipped daisies. Checking her watch she realised she was still running late, so taking the briefest moment to tuck back any loose strands of hair which had wrangled themselves free of the bun at the nape of her neck Marie headed out of the tube station, back up to the surface.

Emerging in to the dim light of an autumn morning Marie squinted slightly, feeling momentarily as blind as a mole squinting up from the ground. She could scarcely afford even a second to get her bearings. Her boss, Amanda Pickens loathed tardiness almost as much as she loathed those who opposed her right to wear real fur.

When Marie finally pushed her way through the glass doors of the office building where she worked her cheeks were flushed and a slight spattering of perspiration had formed upon her forehead.

CHRISTMAS TOWN, TENNESSEE

Where everyday dreams come true!

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ginny Baird brings you the start of a brand new holiday series…

THE CHRISTMAS COOKIE SHOP

(Christmas Town, Book 1)

Hannah Winchester is down on her luck and disillusioned with love, but her fortunes are about to change. When Hannah inherits a defunct bakery in East Tennessee, her first thought is to sell it and settle her substantial debt. Then the townsfolk welcome her warmly and she’s taken with the joyful spirit of the place, where stores employ holiday themes and residents have surnames like Christmas and Claus. After a handsome lawman comes to her aid dressed as Santa, Hannah learns he’s more than a hot guy in a red suit and shiny black boots. Sheriff Carter Livingston has joined in the cause of rejuvenating the town, and he’s encouraging her to do her part. Hannah’s great-grandmother, Lena, sold special holiday cookies that brought hope and renewal to the people of Christmas Town. Yet Hannah has plans elsewhere and isn’t looking to stay. Can she possibly reopen the shop known for kindling romance—without sacrificing her heart?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
Carter wondered what someone so young and pretty was doing in this neck of the woods. Christmas Town, Tennessee. Population: thirteen hundred. And, most of those thirteen hundred were over the age of sixty, which was probably why Carter couldn’t take his eyes off the striking brunette with warm brown eyes. Wispy raven tresses tumbled out from beneath a colorful knitted cap, framing her creamy complexion and lightly grazing her chin. She turned her eyes back on his and Carter’s heart stuttered. What was wrong with his ticker today? When he’d first laid eyes on her, it had skipped a beat. Now, it was slamming like a jackhammer. He pounded his chest with a fist to set it right before asking, “Long drive?”
She shook out her map and folded it, setting it aside. “I came here from Stafford, Virginia. Near Washington, DC.”
Wow. What did that take you? Seven or eight hours, I’d guess?”
Could have been less without the weather.”
I’ll bet.” A blast of cold air roared through the lowered window and the woman shivered, gripping her arms by the elbows of her tattered pea coat. “My apologies,” Carter said, embarrassed by his attempts to detain her. “Here I am keeping you, when what you asked for was help in getting under way.”
That’s all right.” Her pretty mouth drew up in a smile and heat warmed the back of his neck. “I’m new in town so I don’t have many friends yet.” The kittens mewed again. “Apart from those two,” she said with a laugh.
Then you’re in for a treat. Everyone knows everyone in Christmas Town. It’s a very friendly place.”
Mirth sparked in her eyes as she lowered her window even further and stuck out her hand. “I’m Hannah, by the way. Hannah Winchester. It’s nice to meet you, Sheriff.”
Call me Carter, please.” He latched onto her worn leather glove, thinking it felt warm and feminine in his calloused hand. Apart from patrolling, Carter did a whole lot of handyman work around town. All pro bono stuff to help the locals. Gave him something to do, since he’d only written one traffic ticket all year. Even then, he’d ultimately let the guy off with a warning.
Staying in Christmas Town long?” He tried to downplay the hopefulness in his voice, but he wasn’t completely successful.
She blushed and withdrew her hand. “Just passing through. I’ve rented a place for a month. But I might stay two, depending.”
Carter scolded himself for nearly hitting on the woman. But nearly wasn’t doing. Nearly only counted in horseshoes and hand grenades…
We have a wedding in our family coming up and wanted to make our invitations look stunning. When I was offered these Sealing Wax Sticks I jumped on it. These are very easy to use. They come in 12 beautiful colors. Just light the wick, hold sort of close to the envelope and let it drip when you have a puddle use a stamp to put a design in, let fully dry and done. It takes about 1 minute to make the seal. The colors are deeper then the picture shows.
I received this product during a promotion free for my honest review and they are 100% my own opinions. I received no compensation for this review and I am not required to give a good review. I am also not associated with the seller in any way.
Excerpt:
She halted
mid-reach, gasping for breath and shoving back against the wall. She couldn’t.
She’d been forbidden her entire life to go into the attic. Her mother made that
painfully clear. She was not allowed and neither was Sunnie.
So why then did
she have the uncontrollable urge to pull down the attic stairs and go up?
Do it, Aoife. Go
up into the attic.
The voice
whispered inside her skull. She had no idea whose voice it was. She didn’t
think it was her own. She was compelled to open the attic and take that first
upward step.
So she did. With
her heart pounding in her throat, she ascended and paused in the darkness
listening to her ragged breathing. She stood on forbidden ground.
Now what?
The trunk.
Again that
voice. She scanned the darkened room, only barely able to make out shapes.
There were the holiday decorations on one side. An old desk on another. She
headed for the desk.
The trunk. The
trunk.
She pressed her
palm against the side of her head and rubbed. She was hearing things.
The desk was
coated in a thick layer of dust that had been disturbed not so long ago. There
were several cubbies with papers sticking out of them in a chaotic and untidy
way and two books that had finger and handprints left behind in the dust.
“Hidden
Dimensions and Fae Time Travel,” she read aloud.
She picked up
the second book, A Hypothesis of Fae Magic in Other Realms, and flipped through
it. She understood none of it as it was written in a language she couldn’t
comprehend. She dropped the book and reached for one of the scrolls when her
fingers brushed one that felt different than paper. Curious, she pulled it out
and untied the faded red ribbon, letting it roll open. Despite the flawless
handwriting, the words were of a language she couldn’t understand. Except for
the two words in English scrawled across the top.
“Eradication
spell?”
She dropped the
scroll and shoved it away as something dark gripped her. Like she’d touched
something forbidden or evil.  With her
heart pattering a quick beat, she reached for another scroll. The parchment
fell open on the desk revealing a drawing of an ancient map. The ink had faded.
When she peered at it closer she couldn’t make out the words, which were in the
same language as the book. Something flowery with lots of squiggles and she had
no idea what it said. A small compass was drawn in the lower left hand corner
with north pointing to the right.
Aoife reached
for a second piece of paper. It had been folded and looked as though it was a
page that had been ripped out of a book. Again, the language was strange. Like
nothing she’d ever seen before. As she stared at the faded ink, the words and
letters re-arranged and morphed into words she could read.
A wizard of both
Fae and Wizard blood will come into power and rule from a silver throne.
“A wizard of
both Fae and Wizard blood…?” Her voice was quiet in the darkness.
Something behind
her glowed. She dropped the paper and turned to see a symbol on the top of the
trunk had lit up, like a beacon in the darkness.
The trunk. The
trunk. The trunk.
It called to her.
She was certain she had heard her name coming from it. In a fog, she walked
toward it and dropped to her knees. It was an old steamer trunk. She had never
seen it before in the house. Where did it come from? Was it her mother’s?
The glowing
symbol on the top was an intricate Celtic knotwork circle with a sword through
it. The light pulsed, beckoning her.
The trunk,
Aoife.
“Yes,” she heard
herself say. “The trunk. Of course.”
Her fingers
brushed over the Celtic knotwork and suddenly the interior illuminated. Light
pushed out around the lid. She gasped and opened it. When the blinding light
faded, there in the trunk was a stone staircase leading down into darkness.
“What the
heck…?”
Downstairs, she
heard a door slam and then Sean’s voice. “Aoife? Are you here?”
Step into the
trunk, Aoife.
“Yes, I must.”
She stood and
stepped onto the first stone step. Her racing heart thumped a wild beat and the
next thing she knew she was on the second step. Then the third.
“Aoife, wait!”
Glancing up,
Sean appeared at the top of the attic stairs. She sucked in a sharp breath,
grasped the lid and slammed it closed above her head. She was instantly plunged
into total darkness and hunched down on the step, waiting for Sean to open the
lid and come after her. She heard nothing. No sounds above.
Panic seized
her. She reached above and her hand brushed against smooth, cool stone. She
pushed and pushed and pushed but the stone would not give. She flattened her
trembling hands against where she thought the lid was but again met cold stone
instead of smooth wood. The lid had disappeared. Where did it go?
A cold tingling
sensation went through her as she realized she was trapped. Gasping for air,
she banged the side of her hand against the stone until it hurt, shouting Sean’s
name as hot tears stung her eyes. Her voice bounced off the stone walls around
her, echoing through the shadows. It was useless. He couldn’t hear her. Sean
didn’t follow her because Sean couldn’t follow her. She was trapped.
There was no
going back and there was no way she could get out. Her only option was to go
down. With her pulse racing, she descended into the shadows.
Michelle Miles grew up in North Central Texas in a rodeo town but was far more interested in nerdy things like Star Trek and Star Wars. She started writing fan fiction in high school. When being an archeologist like Indiana Jones or a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader didn't work out, she decided writing was her gig and has wanted to write her own stories ever since.
Her love of romance started when she picked up Victoria Holt and Daphne du Maurier and was immediately smitten with the genre. But she also found another love in the fantasies of Patricia A. McKillip and Anne McCaffrey. Since she couldn’t decide which genre to pick—and because she’s a true Gemini—she decided it would be super fun to write contemporary and fantasy romance. She is a member of Romance Writers of America and has served on the board of several chapters as president and treasurer.
In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music, reading, cross-stitching and watching movies. A Native Texan, she loves castles, dragons, fairies and elves and is an avid Game of Thrones fan. She can be found online at Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Goodreads.
