book blurb

He’s a relentless homicide detective. She’s an uncompromising journalist.

Neither desires to work together—but they’ll never uncover the truth alone.

Landing a front page headline isn’t why reporter Caitlin Sparks is investigating a string of suspicious deaths connected to the U.S. State Department. She has a personal stake in finding the killer.

Detective Blake Madison has a connection to the murders too, and will risk anything to uncover the truth. But a journalist is the last person he’d rely on to help him solve a crime—especially one whose trail of evidence leads back to him.
excerpt
Caitlin stood in the dining room and surveyed the large, ornately carved table and twelve matching chairs. A fire glowed in a large-mouthed fireplace that boasted a beautiful cherry-colored mantel.Gracing the walls on the other three sides were foxhunting paintings—typical of dining rooms in this part of Virginia.

“Here you go.” The detective set the mug down on the table and took a seat. His sleeves were rolled up now and the tie had disappeared completely. The way his dark hair and complexion stood out against the crisp, white shirt he wore made him look a little more amiable and pleasant than the last time they’d met. But when he leaned forward with his arms on the table, Caitlin could see why he had such a reputation as a menacing interrogator. The look in his eyes turned intense and commanding—the kind of look that both drew her in and made her want to run away. Fast.

“I don’t usually do this.”

“What’s that?”

“Talk to reporters.” He exaggerated the word to make clear it was a profession extremely distasteful to him.

Caitlin refused to be intimidated or swayed. “Thanks for clearing that up.”

“You’re welcome,” he said, matching her sarcasm with some of his own. “And just to be clear, I’m no longer on the case so I don’t have anything to give you.”

“Excuse me?” Caitlin’s tone revealed her confusion and surprise.

“I told you I’m off the case.” He appeared surprised that she was surprised.

“Yes, and I’m off the story. But I thought we were sharing.”

“Minor correction. You’re sharing.”

Caitlin blinked. And blinked again. She thought he must be joking, but the expression on his face did not suggest that intent. “If you’re no longer actively working the case, why am I sharing with you?”

He lifted his mug and took a drink of coffee as he pondered the question.

“I don’t like what I’m being told. I want to see if you have anything to substantiate my gut feeling.”

Caitlin stood her ground. “In my world, sharing implies that we both give a little.” She closed the file and pushed out her chair. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“Hold on.” He sat back in his chair, crossed his arms, and stared at her a moment.

Caitlin hated the way he was able to combine unnerving intensity with disinterested detachment. She wondered if it was a natural habit of his or if he had been trained by the military to remain remote and aloof even in the most distressing situations. His body language revealed nothing, and his facial expression, as usual, was that of a stone. She didn’t like being around people she couldn’t read.

“So you came all the way out here, and now you want to negotiate?”

Caitlin was stunned, both by his self-assurance and his assertion.

“Negotiate? I didn’t realize I was going to have to negotiate. I’m pretty sure the word you used in your email was share.”

“Okay, maybe negotiate is the wrong word. How about co-op- erate?”

He drew the word out, pronouncing each syllable.

Caitlin couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “So you lured me out here on the pretext of sharing, and then have the gall to think you can bully me into providing information with nothing in return?” Shestood. “You can call it negotiation or cooperation or even collaboration for all I care, but you want to know what I call it?”

He didn’t answer, but she thought she saw a hint of amusement in his eyes, which infuriated her even more. She was too angry to think of a word to call it, so she pushed in her chair and turned to leave.

“Hold on.” His commanding voice stopped her in mid-stride. It took everything within her to turn around, but what she saw when she did surprised her.

Madison was fingering through a stack of folders in front of him, intent it seemed on locating one in particular. “Have you seen the autopsy report?” His voice was casual, as if the last few minutes had never transpired.

“Of course not.”

He lifted his gaze for just a second at the tone of her voice, and then went back to searching through the manila folders. Finding the one he wanted, he pushed it over to where she had been sitting, and then picked up his coffee mug. “Take a look.”

Caitlin stared at the file and then back at his stone-cold face. “From the Hillside murders?”

He gave a single nod of affirmation, but he didn’t look happy about it.

Blurb:

A summer party is the last place Lydia Flowers wants to be. Beer pong? Stupid, foot-wrecking shoes? Random hookups? No thanks. Lydia would rather be in her cleats practicing her bat handling skills.

Enter Abe Fischer, the Nashville Teen Idol superstar. He’s a lip-syncing party animal with a short fuse; or at least that’s what the tabloids say. Except, Abe turns out to be nothing like the guy Lydia’s read about online. He’s sweet, and the way he talks to his horse…sigh.

Then life throws Lydia and Abe a curveball. They are wrongfully arrested for destruction of property. Their choices? Either work on the Fischer Farm for the summer earning nothing more than blisters and a sunburn, or have the arrest go on their records, which would ruin Lydia’s shot at a softball scholarship. It’s a no-brainer. Lydia picks up a pitchfork, pulls out the SPF 40, and prepares for the worst two months of her life.

When the press gets wind of a big secret Abe’s family has been keeping, things become even more complicated. Now Lydia has another choice to make: stick around for Abe’s messed-up life in the spotlight, or go for the scholarship of her dreams.

Virtual Book Tour for The Productivity Book by Michael Brecht

The Productivity Book
by Michael Brecht

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Non-fiction/time management
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Ever wondered what the secret is to productivity? Here’s a hint: there isn’t just one. Introducing the Doodle Productivity Book! Containing in-depth interviews with 30 of the world’s top productivity & time management experts, this book lifts the lid on the industry’s best kept tips and tricks. The result? An engaging and practical guide that will help you find your natural pace, so you can work smarter—not harder.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.
Excerpt Two:
Quote Jason Womack:
What do you think the next productivity trend will be?
Within 10 years, we’re going to have more free time thrust upon us than ever before. We’ll look back and say, “I didn’t see it coming.” The “it” that I’m talking about is the everyday automation of tasks and activities that currently take time to do every day. Your car will automatically refuel itself when power gets low. Your refrigerator will automatically re-order (and schedule delivery for) what you run out of as you need it. Your children will come home with a fully customized dashboard they plug in to study just what they need for the test they are preparing to take. The ways and places that the things we have to do today will disappear and result in HOURS a day of free time. My fear is that this will overwhelm and then depress hundreds of thousands of people.
Interview with Michael Brecht
As a kid did you write or make up stories?
Yes I did, I loved dreaming my own stories and indeed, a few times I started my own books, but never finished them. The first book that I actually published was a children’s book in Australia, written by primary school kids and their stories about the Australian Bush-Life.
Where does most of your Character inspiration come from?
Our Productivity Book gives you an insight into the minds of 30 productivity experts who have to overcome hurdles themselves every day. We went straight to the source: We wanted to open a window into the day of their lives and discover their personal approaches from sunrise to sunset. We received answers that are often nuanced, often personal and always undeniably focused.
Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
See above
What was the inspiration for your book?
Our book is unique as it provides real value through input from 30 time management experts and my own advice. It is practical, helps in a very concrete way reflect your daily habits and the feedback we have received so far is tremendous with many readers thanking us for all these recommendations. The fun factor is that many of the 30 productivity experts have the same routines, say in the morning or while facing tough challenges. So becoming more productive is really feasible for everyone out there and it gives me great pleasure to state this as a possibility for everyone.
What is your favorite spot to write?
The Beach.
What advice would you give budding writers?
Enjoy what you do, stay true to yourself and never give up.
Cover Reveal: Forever and One Week (Spirits of Saoradh #2) by Caroline Cairn
Today is the cover reveal for Forever and One Week by Caroline Cairn. This cover reveal is organized by Lola's Blog Tours.
Forever and One WeekForever and One Week (Spirits of Saoradh #2)
by Caroline Cairn
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age category: Adult
Release Date: 24 April, 2016
Blurb:
The Spirits of Saoradh, who carry the guilt of a crime they committed when they were alive, now spend their ghostly days in the Void, dark nothingness where time and space are distorted. Until they get bound to a human. As often as needed, that human can call them to the real world, ask them to grant a wish, then send them back to the Void. The Spirits also have to follow strict rules or be punished, unaware that they can earn their redemption through a selfless sacrifice.
Spirit Logan despises the obedience he has to show to his humans, and prefers the enjoyable solitude of the Void. For three years, he has managed to threaten them into severing their bond, thus having his memory wiped of their existence. Except his latest human, an emotionless woman with a secret past, isn’t scared of him. Worse, she doesn’t care about his ability to make wishes come true.
Tessa, a twenty-six-year-old nursery teacher in Fort William, Scotland, doesn’t expect a sullen ghost only she can see and touch to burst through her solid defences. Both dismayed and intrigued, she offers Logan a deal he can’t refuse: to live with her in the human world for one week, at the end of which she will agree to release him.
Slowly, Tessa braves through the safety of her detachment towards people to show Logan some kindness. But the more her feelings deepen, the more Logan increases his distance…
You can find Forever and One Week on Goodreads
Excerpt:
Logan kept his distance as she walked home. She had removed her hair clip, her long fringe hiding half her face. Her attention didn’t settle on anyone. Anonymous figure, she passed people, shops, cars. Her elbow grazed the city walls a few times. A teenager yakking with his equally brainless friends bumped into her without stopping. She stumbled back before resuming her trip in silence.
So apparently, the smiles and energy were exclusive to the work place. He grimaced at the idiocy of it. At least she’s standing straight.
She reached her flat after one last rounded corner. The building presented well on the outside. The sash windows, the symmetrical lines and the decorated roof line pertained to a wonderful Victorian architecture. The inside on the other hand, had lost its authenticity. Whoever had worked the hallway had done a half-assed job and destroyed the features that should have remained. Shame.
He let her remove her scarf, her shoes and her jacket. He let her put the kettle on and make herself some coffee. He let her drink the first sip, standing in the poky area an estate agent would have trouble calling a kitchen.
“How long are you going to pretend I’m not here?” he snapped.
Three more sips, and not one attempt at eye contact.
His blood went from simmering to boiling. He darted towards her, planted his palm over her temple and forced her head back. “Are you on drugs or something?”
Her eyes flashed with something he couldn’t read. Not for long though; the dead stare and limp body were soon back under his touch.
He flung his arms up. “Fuck’s sake.” Who did she think she was? She ought to be running by now, far from him.
Coffee finished, she washed the mug and towelled it dry. The cloth she used was frayed, the counter marked by old stains.
“Handsome place you have here.” Clean, though in dire need of a makeover, which suggested the woman lived alone, or wasn’t interested in DIY. Either way, she could have phoned a joiner, or a painter. He used his frame to crowd her once again.
“Ask me,” he said, her chin between his fingers. “Ask me to give you some brand new furniture.”
Her grey gaze turned opaque.
“Ask me,” he repeated, his grasp more forceful. “Ask me, for goodness sake.”
If her pulse hadn’t been visible under her skin, he could have sworn he was holding a mannequin.
“Ask me!”
His voice boomed in the room. He hadn’t yelled this loud since Olivia had crossed the road without looking.
“Why don’t you react?” he continued, temper all but lost. “Ask me to give you a penthouse apartment, ask me to fill your bathtub with money, ask me to load up your fridge, anything!” He wanted to shake this wooden doll who had had her life sucked out of her since her departure from the nursery. He wanted to scream some more to wake her up. She could be a proper human being, he had witnessed it. So why was she back to this infuriating comatose state?
Enraged, his fingertips clawed in her scalp, anger and confusion mixing and melting into one. He yanked her against him and slammed his mouth on hers.
There wasn’t any lust or tenderness in their joined lips. Hers were slack, his were tingly and unrepentant. His teeth bit inside, so forceful he was. Her body didn’t shake. The mug and the towel remained under her firm grip.
“Why don’t you push me?” he roared, jerking himself from her. “Why do you let me do this to you? Do you realize what I’m capable of? What I could do to you? I could so easily—I could…” He tripped over his own feet as he glided away from her, through her table, through her walls, through people in the street, far, far away from her. The pounding of his own heartbeat resonated in his ears. “I could hurt you.”
About the Author:
Born and raised in France, Caroline Cairn studied hotel management before spending a couple of years in England, Ireland and Belgium. In 2001, she and her husband settled close to the Loch Ness monster in the Highlands of Scotland, and soon, two children and about thirteen fish joined them.
Dramatic scenes are still her favourite to work on, which is perhaps a reminiscence of her teenage years when every single ones of her stories had to end in epic tragedy (Shakespeare had nothing on her).
Thankfully, these days, she veers towards the happy-ever-after finale in a glorious orange and red sunset.
Refresh2go Universal Pitcher Replacement Filters, White (3pack)
I have a PUR watcher pitcher and use it daily. As soon as it gets empty or close to it we refill it. We do not have the best water even though it is well water. There is a lot of iron in our water and you can taste it straight from the sink so this pitcher is one of the most used things in my house.
The replacement filters can be quite expensive at the store and definitely if you buy the name brand ones. This set of 3 replacement filters from RefresH2Go fit perfectly in my pitcher and about a 1/3 of the cost for 3 as I pay for 1 at the store. I have not noticed any difference between these and the name brand ones in the taste of the water. I will be back again and again for these. With there being 3 in the pack I won't have to shop near as much either for replacement filters. Each filter is individually sealed to keep them fresh until opened for use. There really is no cons to these replacement filters at all, to me they are a win win and saving me money.
 I received this product free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
