Virtual Name Before the Masses Tour for In Defense of the Moth or A Meaningless Dance in Blinding Heat and Light by Johnny Newport

GENRE: Literary Fiction

BLURB:

The Moon...

It is said the moon’s spell can move us and nobody understands her pull like Johnny Gomez.

Johnny, a devil-may-care and fatalistic salesman, remains tethered to his privileged life by a love for his children, his career and the moon—and not necessarily in that order. In fact, it’s Johnny’s lifelong passion for the moon, through both obsessive, independent study and a communal involvement in an astronomy society, that serves as the only outward distraction as a life of standard struggles waxes into a burgeoning crisis.

Until one night Johnny finds that the moon—his preferred method of self-medication-- no longer exists...but for him only and not anyone else.

Or so it seems, leaving Johnny’s continued marriage with reality to hinge on his rediscovery of the moon!

If you like allegories and/or philosophical apologies for acute insanity, grab “In Defense of the Moth or A Meaningless Dance in the Blinding Heat and Light” and join the eclipse.

Excerpt Two:

“I walked past a block of shuttered buildings. Most I noticed had been shuttered for a long time, but the last office was a more recent failure. It was a beauty salon last I remembered. I reached the street corner where the tall street lamp was planted in the sidewalk and I gazed upward. A flutter of moths danced to the low hum of energy the light created. It wasn’t much and it wasn’t for long as they would be dead soon, but at least without the light of the moon they had the luck of having a substitute for their meaning, even if artificial, through man’s production.

They owe us one, I thought.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Johnny Newport (The Moth) is carrying the consciousness of the oft-failed man native to 2016. Strictly from a visual standpoint he looks like he may be kept in a nice package, but this is not so. Johnny Newport has two feet on the warpath and probably smells like last night’s street tacos.

Johnny knows that his devil-may-care attitude is unfair—to himself and to others—but this is precisely the origin for the voice of an unbridled generation of privilege; the 21st-century-livers that intimately know they have squandered (squandered what? How can we say definitively and with any assurance despite knowing that a squandering has, indeed, befallen?), and will continue to do so, happily.

Otherwise about me, I studied at the University of Texas at Austin, have spent the last two years in The Writer's Path program at SMU (Southern Methodist University, Dallas) and have applied to a handful of low-res MFA programs for fall of '16.

Short story publications in 2015 were:

* Mr. Franklin’s Heartbreaking Sympathy (The Speculative Book, anthology)

* La Tortuga, (Limestone, University of Kentucky MFA journal)

* He, Who Controls the Spices (Euphemism, Illinois State University graduate journal)

* I Blame Lolita (Moth magazine, Ireland's premiere literary review)
* Letter to the Jew's Mom (The Vehicle, Eastern Illinois University online journal)

Interview with Johnny Newport
As a kid did you write or make up stories? I don’t think I did much of either, to be honest. I read all manner of books, however, and was a consistent reader from the earliest days I can remember being able to read until now.

Where does most of your Character inspiration come from? Most of my character inspiration comes directly from my life and people I either know or indirectly from amalgamations of people I know.

Do some qualities of your characters come from real people? Absolutely. All of them, I would say, because my characters are slaves to the human form and condition. I do not have enough creativity or wit or intelligence or divine inspiration to invent new or hitherto unknown qualities so I mostly co-opt qualities I experience from other people. The rest are qualities I have, good, bad or indifferent.

What was the inspiration for your book? The inspiration for my book was a negative one. I was forcing myself into a sabbatical from drink and drug and was in a miserable, white-knuckle state. I thought it a good time to catch up on reading but found that, with every book I picked up, I could not stay with it and would quit within a chapter or two. This went for every style and genre of book I tried and eventually got to the point of frustration that I vented to a friend. My friend told me it was the Universe’s way of telling me it was time to write again (I’d laid the pen down circa 2011 to try and save my insanity), and so I did. The miserable state I was in thus inspired me.

What is your favorite spot to write? My favorite spot to write was on a chaise lounge I had in my living room, between the hours of 10:00pm to around 2:00am, Friday through Sunday. I did a lot of my self-editing (pre-editing?) at the flagship Half Price Books in Dallas.

What advice would you give budding writers? If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times, but read as much as you possibly can get away with.

Book Blast for Fibers by Jennifer-Crystal Johnson

Fiber
by Jennifer-Crystal Johnson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Anna Reynolds is caught up in the middle of a secret interdimensional government agreement... and she doesn't even know it.

There's a medical anomaly loosely dubbed Morgellons disease afflicting a number of people. Symptoms include open sores that produce colorful string-like fibers, fatigue, and nightmarish visions of shadowy figures. No one knows where it came from. No one knows what causes it. There is no cure.

When Anna begins having nightmares and waking hallucinations of the shadow people, her uneasiness about her condition grows. Enlisting the help of her doctor and some friends, Anna is determined to find out what's really going on and why Morgellons is such a mystery.

With her health declining and doubts about whom she can trust, is Anna doomed to become a slave to her condition? Or will she and her unlikely group of would-be heroes come through, saving her... and, ultimately, the world?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
The twinkling sound of the wind chimes gave an eerie undertone to the night, the wind blowing through the trees and the darkness seeming more intense than usual. Anna wrapped her coat tightly around herself, walking briskly back toward home. She usually didn’t walk anywhere, especially at night, but she’d decided to get some fresh air and needed time to think. Walking was always good for that, even if it was a little cold and getting dark so much earlier.
Reaching into her pocket for her keys, she approached the front door. The porch light was out – she must’ve forgotten to turn it on before she left. Trying to work through feeling alone and fending off paranoia, she rummaged in her purse for her keys and retrieved them just as her foot hit something on her front porch. Of course she couldn’t see, but it sounded and felt like a box of some kind.
She pulled her cell phone out of her purse and turned on the flashlight app to see what was happening. Shining the light on her porch, she saw that it was, indeed, a box. A mystery box, she thought. As if my life couldn’t get any stranger.
She unlocked the front door and flipped the light switch, but nothing happened. Trying to juggle her phone and the box at the same time, she walked into the house, set the box down, and went into the living room to try the light there. Also nothing. Shaking her head and doing her best to quiet her thoughts, she made her way into the garage with her phone and found the breaker box. She flipped the switch and the lights came on without a problem.
Things are getting entirely too weird around here, she thought, cautiously making her way back upstairs to her entry where the box sat. She switched off her flashlight app and stood still for a few moments, listening to see if she could hear anything to indicate that someone was in the house. She didn’t think so because her door had been locked, but she was so scared she could hear her heartbeat pounding in her ears. Everything else was silent.
Satisfied that no one was in her house, she picked up the box and took it into her kitchen. She set it on the counter and inspected it. There was a note taped to the top of it. She unfolded it and read aloud, “Trust no one.”
My Review:
This book literally had my skin crawling. In the book Anna Reynolds skin is breaking out with sores that itch and take forever to heal. At times there are red and blue fibers coming from the sores. She also feel like things are crawling under the skin. She decides to go to the hospital and have the fibers analyzed in the lab instead she is tossed into the psychiatric ward. While in the hospital she meets a doctor who is studying her condition as it is happening all over. They give the disease a name but no one knows where it cam from, how it started, and there is no cure for it. Anna agrees to being a test subject so to speak. Now it is up to Anna, the doctor, and her friends to figure out what this disease and try and save Anna. And also uncover the secret inter-dimensional government agreement along the way.
This really is a intense book it's probably not for the really squeamish. It does grab you and drag you in holding you with the little blue and red fibers.
This is my first book by Jennifer-Crystal Johnson. I really liked her writing style an they way she kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. I love how her descriptions are to the point instead of filling you with a bunch or stuff you that really has nothing to do with this story or anything else for that matter. I really liked her characters. She has done a great job of really bringing them all to life. I also loved the way that she wrote this story well enough to make you wonder if this could actually happen.
I was given my copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

But danger threatens when she discovers the crimes of an abusive man determined to make Jennifer his own.

Zebidiah Moran, chief of staff for a new senator in Washington, is determined to uncover the lovely Jennifer’s secrets and guard her from danger. But will his sacrifices be enough to keep her safe?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Zeb walked into the dining room, knowing at first glance that it was large and elegant, nothing like the alcove where he and Max had grabbed their meals at the Hacienda when not eating in the kitchen. In his peripheral vision, he saw Jolene rise from her place and walk toward him. But his eyes, his focus, had been arrested by a woman seated directly across from the chair a servant now held for him to be seated in. Jennifer Crawford.
They stared at each other, for some long moments, Zeb thought, before he inclined his head and spoke her name. Her lips moved but he could not hear her whispered response. She was as stunningly beautiful and as outwardly delicate as he remembered her, with her golden hair piled casually on her head and her long lashes wafting furiously around sea-green eyes as she returned his regard.
“Miss Crawford,” he repeated. “It is good to see you. You are looking very lovely.”
It was then he remembered someone stood at his side. “Jolene,” he said and turned then to her, taking both of her hands in his. “It is very good to see you again, too.”
Jolene’s eyebrows arched. “Really, Zebidiah? At first I didn’t think you knew I was even in the room.”
Stylish Clear Silver Safety Glasses by Delta Track
My stepson works in a manufacturing plant and has to wear safety glasses all day at work. The ones they supply at work are kind of cheap and tend to break easily and are basically disposable, SO he chooses to buy and bring his own glasses to work with him. I was able to get him this pair and and he has been using them for over a week now and really likes them. He has been hit a couple of times with flying debris so far and these glasses have held up to not only keeping his eyes safe but also they have not scratched. He was not hit with flying steel or anything like that but from the dust dirt and foam pieces they are great. The glasses fit well and do not slide around on his face. The nice pieces are very comfortable as well as the ear pieces. the lenses are clear with a mirror type finish on them so he looks cool while he is being safe. These even come with a nice cloth bag with a pull string to keep them safe when he is not wearing them. Other guys at the plant have all expressed interest in these glasses and looking to buy them as well.
SWENYO Bedroom Sheet Set Bundle White, Queen Size
I needed a new set of sheets for my bed and ran across these. I really like these sheets. They are crisp but yet soft. I like sheets that are not a thin blanket so to speak. I do not care for micro fiber sheets, those are the ones I am calling a thin blanket. They are usually hot and end up with fuzz balls with in a few washes.
These sheets are 100% cotton and I love them. They let the warmth of the blanket in but do not wrap around you like the microfiber ones do and make you hot, which is what I meant by crisp. These sheets are 200 thread count and feel great. They are easy to toss int eh washer and dryer and did not shrink up. The thing I like the best about these sheets are they fit my mattress very well. The pockets are very deep and wrap around the whole mattress. They also have an extra elastic piece about mid way of the corner pockets. The fitted sheet really hugs my bed and does not slide around at all no matter how much moving we do on the bed.
You get a top sheet and a fitted bottom sheet. There are no pillow slips with this set, but I have tons of those in my linen closet where sheets tend to wear out a lot faster then the pillow slips do.  These came in a nice drawstring bag. Haven't found a use for that yet but I did keep it, even though I won't be storing the sheets in it between bed changes.
Kapoosh Hex-Connex Universal Knife Caddy- 8 Inch Cherry Red
I am loving this knife caddy. I actually have both the 5 inch and the 8 inch sizes and they are awesome. The 2 can be linked together, which I really love, and more could be added then the 2 since there are slots all the way around to connect others. I have my larger knives and my kitchen scissors in the large one and my smaller paring and table knives in the smaller one. I love the size of these as well. They are about 3 inches across. This holds just as many knives if not more then the larger knife block I replaced with these and take up a whole lot less room.I love that these do not dull or scratch my knifes. When I was a kid we played a game called pick up sticks that what the plastic strips inside of the block remind me only they are very flexible. You can put the knives in anywhere, there are no set cut outs like in a knife block. The plastic strips kind of move out of the way and make room as you push the knife in. They are in there pretty tightly so they will not let the knife fall out. The outside is also plastic and very easy to wipe down when needed with a wet cloth. These seem to be very heavy duty without being real heavy like a knife block. I have the red one but the company also offers these in green, orange, blue and slate. You could mix and match for a colorful display or choose one color to highlight your kitchen. Gotta love that.
PRO-SYS® Sensitive Extra Soft - Super Soft Micro Tipped Bristles
I am loving this toothbrush my gums are not in the best condition and tend to bleed a little if I brush to hard. I am not having a problem with this toothbrush. The bristles are soft but yet strong enough to make my teeth feel clean. Does not leave any of the sandy or furry feel on my teeth. I am loving the handle as well. It is a stiff handle and much thicket then most toothbrushes. The handle really has no give to it so I feel like my teeth are getting a lot cleaner with a standard flexible brush. I just felt like the harder I pushes with my old toothbrush the harder I needed to push since the handle would bend away from my teeth. I like that there is no rubber at all on the brush or handle. I would change brushes out really quickly since rubber holds germs and bacteria and also some can leave a rubbery taste. I am very happy with this toothbrush and will be buying them for my whole family.
