Meet the Author:

Rita Monette was born and raised in Southwest Louisiana. She loves to write stories set in the beautiful, yet mysterious, bayous and swamps of her home state.

Her middle grade series, The Nikki Landry Swamp Legends, is based on tales told by her father—who made his living in those bayous—of reasons to stay out of the swamp.

She currently lives with her husband, four lap dogs, and one lap cat, in the mountains of Tennessee. Besides writing and illustrating, she loves watching the many birds that make their habitat on the Cumberland Plateau, working in the garden, and frequenting waterfalls.

Guest Post by Rita Monette:

Jean Lafitte, Pirate or Hero?

by Rita Monette

What? Youve never heard of him?

Well, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Galveston, Texas, every child grows up knowing the legends of treasure that is supposedly buried all along the Gulf coast and the inland bayous and swamps. The quests to locate the booty of Jean Lafitte have been ongoing for almost two hundred years.

So who then was Jean Lafitte? One thing is for certain. Lafitte is such a legendary figure, it is hard to separate fact from fiction. Ive compiled just a short summary of what I have learned while researching for my novel, The Curse at Pirates Cove. Most of it is based on fact, but as with all legends, fact can morph into its own reality over time.

Lafitte was born in Bordeaux France in seventeen eighty of wealthy parents, and sailed the high seas at an early age with older brothers. Interestingly enough, Lafitte, an educated man, always maintained that he was never a pirate, but actually a businessman and privateer working for various governments. After coming to America, Jean and his brother Pierre took on a contract with the government to attack ships that posed a threat in the Gulf of Mexico, and were allowed to keep whatever spoils went along with that task. Starting with only one ship, the Lafittes built a small fleet from confiscated vessels.

Of course, his activities began to cross many illegal lines as he saw opportunities for profit, such as selling slaves and bounty from ships he captured. He set up a colony in Barataria bay, on a small island near New Orleans. On certain occasions he would sell his loot and slaves at a market in New Orleans. When it became illegal to sell slaves in the state, he started selling them directly to plantation owners that could only get them illegally.

The governor of Louisiana, tired of his antics, declared him a pirate and put a bounty on his head. His compound in Barataria was destroyed by the American navy, along with most of his fleet.

However, Lafitte got the chance to redeem himself with America when he offered his assistance to Colonel Andrew Jackson to help fight the British during The War of 1812.

Lafitte learned the British were planning to attack the City of New Orleans from the Gulf, which would have given them access to the Mississippi River. He offered up his band of pirates to help defend the city. After all, they had much gun powder, and they knew the bayous like the back of their hands. In return he asked for a pardon for all of his men. Was it because he was loyal to America? A patriot? Or as legend suggests, did he do it for a woman he loved? Whichever the case may be, Andrew Jackson and Governor Claiborne reluctantly accepted the offer.

The Battle of New Orleans became a turning point in American history, when the formidable British army was defeated by Jacksons army, Lafittes pirates, and the ordinary citizens of the city.
~~~~~
The Curse at Pirates Cove, a novel for ages eight and up, is a fictional tale of what might have become of one of Lafittes ships, as they scattered from Barataria in the fall of eighteen fourteen.
When one man's treasure is another man's curse.
Nikki Landry and her friends encounter a ghostly pirate ship, along with its ghostly crew, on a swamp island near their home, travel back in time to eighteen fourteen, and experience a history lesson first hand.
Bamoer Cubic Zirconia White Gold Plated Flower Design Round 9MM Stud Ball Earrings
I love these beautiful earrings. I have a bracelet that matches them perfectly. These are white gold plated with multiple AAA round cut clear cubic zirconia. They are in the shape of a flower and just beautiful. They are 9.3mm, a little bigger then a pencil eraser. They are so shiny, they catch even the smallest amount of light and glitter. They are just absolutely beautiful. Great for wearing out or everyday even.
Bigger than bigger (63"x37.8") and thicker than thicker (210T) Sunshade for Car by iAutomobil
I very much like how this car sunshade is made and put together. It is very think with a silver side and a black side. The silver side helps deflect the heat in the summer and the black side would help pull heat in during the winter. I drive a Nissan Versa and this thing is huge in my car, my husband drives a Dodge journey and it is great in his. I love how this thing can go from about 8 feet long to fit in a tiny 10 X 10 bag and still only be less then an inch thick, I love that it has an elastic band on one corner to hold it together when folded. I also love that it is a one piece design instead of having to fight 2 pieces to cover your windshield.
Magic-T 10ft/3m Braided Charging Data Cord Charger High Speed USB 2.0 A Male to Micro B
 I never knew just how much I really needed a 10 foot charging cable until I got one. I have a fe of the 6 foot ones and thought they were great. Now that I have the 10 foot cable i have found out just how much I can actually move while being hooked to a wire. I like to play games on my tablet. the games eat my battery rather quickly so I need to be plugged in. With the 6 foot cord and the where the plug in is situated I could do this   comfortably. I used this 10 foot cord for the first time I was like wow I can get so much more comfortable.
  This 10 foot cord from Magic T is a great cord. The ends plug into my device and my charger snugly and securely. The cord is covered in a braided cord, which to me seems so much better then other cables. I got the pink and blue cables. I figured at first with 10 feet of wire I would be fighting to keep the tangles out but so far that has not been a problem. I am very happy with these cables.
Synopsis: Anthony Bianci
Since I was a kid all I ever wanted to be was a gangster. I wanted to be feared, to be respected, and for everyone to know my name.
And then she came into my life.
I never planned on falling in love with the mob boss’ daughter. She was forbidden but somehow she became mine. She made me crave things I didn’t even know existed and made me forget about the things I thought I wanted. My quest for power faded away and was replaced by my undying love for her.
Until reality bit me in the ass and I was sent to prison for three years, doing time for a crime I didn’t commit.
Now I’m out and she is creating a life for herself, just like I always wanted for her. Only I’m not a part of that life. I won’t ruin her any more than I already have with my poisonous lifestyle.
No matter how tempted I am.
Adrianna Pastore
I wanted him from the very first time I laid eyes on him.
He was everything to me, my first love and probably my last.
Then my father ruined our perfect little life, and he walked away from me.
I tried to fight for him, for our love, but he pushed me away.
When the love you crave is beautiful, yet forbidden, you can’t help being tempted.
So I’ll fight for him. For us.
Even if I’m the only one fighting.
EXCERPT :TATTOO
I knew all years ago nothing would come close to making me feel the way I did whenever Anthony kissed me. Even when he was kissing me goodbye he made me feel like he cherished me. I believed him when he said he’d love me forever, his actions speaking louder than his words. I hope he knew I felt the same way.
I angled my head, giving him better access to devour my mouth. The thing about kissing someone goodbye is you don’t get a second chance to do it right. In that moment you have to put everything into one kiss and that’s exactly what we did. The last several years, everything we had gone through, everything we had felt for one another entangled in this kiss.
I savored his taste. I memorized the way his teeth felt scraping against my raw lips, the gentle lap his tongue took across them to soothe the sting. I didn’t want him to take away the sting, wishing I would always feel the burning sensation that prickled against my sensitive flesh as a reminder of my Anthony.
His mouth left mine and kept going back to press butterfly kisses against my lips before dropping his hands to my shoulders and taking a retreating step backwards. I swallowed as I dared to meet his gaze.
“Let me grab a shirt and I’ll walk you out,” he said, gruffly. I nodded wiping my cheeks with the sleeves of my sweater. He turned around to walk into his bedroom and that’s when I saw the ink taking up his entire back
The shocked gasp that escaped my mouth caused him to look over his shoulder at me. The instant he saw my face realization set into his features and he closed his eyes.
“Turn around,” I demanded, softly.
He sighed, his shoulders went lax, and he dropped his head. I took a step closer and stared in awe at the beautiful artwork covering his skin. There are beautiful clouds drawn across his shoulder blades all of them shaded in hues of gray and blue, almost matching his eyes. Through the clouds, there are rays that shoot down the center of his back like rays of an eternal light. The year two thousand five looks as though the rays illuminate the numbers. My eyes travel down to the center of his back where there is the letter A written in a familiar handwriting. My first thought is that my eyes are playing tricks on me but when I take, a closer look there is no denying it. The A inked onto his skin is a replica of the A I scribe every time I sign my name .Just when I thought there were no tears left to cry, I feel my eyes fill with water as understanding dawns on me. I push back the tears and force myself to continue my perusal of the intricate tattoo he has forever etched into his flesh. There are flames that begin just beneath the waistband of his sweat pants and travel wildly, vibrant oranges, yellows and reds, all depicting an inferno as they make their way to the A. The year two thousand ten scribed between the flames of hell. I reach out and trace the A with my index finger, feeling him flinch at my touch. He gathers his bearings and remains completely still as my fingertip continues to trace the A. My eyes fixate on the two years, two thousand five was the year it all began for us, and two thousand ten was the year it ended.
He must’ve been reading my mind because he turned around shielding his tattoo from me as he gazed in to my eyes.
“My heaven and my hell,” He whispered, roughly explaining the sentiment behind the ink that forever marks his skin. I stare at him for a moment, stripped of any words. What do you say to that? To the man telling you to forget he exists only to discover he’ll take a piece of you with him wherever he goes.
You say nothing because nothing you could ever say would be enough.
