Guest Post
Okay, Readers, Let’s Work Those Grey Cells!
By Lauren Carr

If you ask any author, they will tell you that they love feedback from readers. Admittedly, constructive advice from readers is helpful in the writing of future books.
Granted, not all advice offered by readers is a good fit. For example, after reading It’s Murder, My Son, a reader approached me at a book event to suggest that since Mac Faraday is so wealthy, “Why doesn’t he pay someone to train Gnarly?” Now, if I was to follow her advice and make Gnarly a well behaved dog, I’d lose half of my reading audience!
Sometimes, due to our human condition, we fail to realize that the very thing we love about something goes hand in hand with what we may perceive as a flaw.
Marriage counselors have been noting this for years. How many times does a woman fall in love with a man because he is hard working and successful? Then, after the wedding, she is annoyed because he works all the time—failing to realize that he is successful (which she loves) because he works all the time (which she hates).
You can’t have it both ways.
Such is the case with my best-selling murder mysteries. Reviewers and readers rave about their fast-pace, twists, turns, unexpected clues, and assortment of unique characters who come to life on the pages. Hard core mystery fans are thrilled by the complexity of my mysteries. Rarely are they able to figure it all out. They can figure out some of it, but not everything. There’s always a twist that will take them by surprise.
But then—once in a while, a reader, after raving about all that will say, “The only complaint that I have is that there are too many characters …” Each book contains a cast of characters in the front.
Like the advice from the reader who suggested that Mac Faraday hire a dog trainer for Gnarly, my response is, “Thank you for the advice, but no.”
I spent most of my career writing humor, while devouring murder mysteries. I only dreamed of writing whodunits. In my head, I believed that you had to be a really brilliant writer in order to write a murder mystery that would challenge whodunit fans to, as Hercule Poirot used to say, “work those gray cells.”
That brilliant writer was not me—or so I thought.
Then, I became dissatisfied with mystery after mystery. Most, if not all, of the time, I would figure out who had done it. Many times, I would have the mystery figured out by a quarter of the way through the book. Often, the books were just too simple.
In many cases, I found that there were so few characters, aka suspects, that a flip of the coin would give me a fifty percent chance of being right. Unfortunately, I had the killer pegged over ninety percent of the time.
Unable to find murder mysteries to read that offered a real challenge, I decided to start writing them myself—writing the type of mysteries that I like to read—with lots of twists, turns, unexpected clues, and an assortment of unique characters who come to life. My challenge to the reader to solve the mystery before I provide the solution gives readers a thrill, which makes them continue turning the pages to the end.
These readers who complain about too many characters, while loving everything else about my books, fail to realize that murder mysteries are like puzzles. Each chapter, each scene, each interaction between the characters is a piece of puzzle. When everything is pieced together correctly, you end up with the solution to the crime.
Fewer characters mean fewer suspects, which makes for less of a challenge to the reader. Less of a challenge makes for less fun in trying to figure out who did it. When it comes to a murder mystery, there is no thrill if you remove the challenge.
A true puzzle enthusiast gets no joy out of putting together a one hundred piece puzzle in one hour. There’s no fun in that.
Like the wife who complains that her successful husband works too much—my readers can’t have it both ways. When they pick up a Lauren Carr mystery, they must prepare themselves to work their brain’s gray cells. (When they need help, they will always find the Cast of Characters in the front.)

My Review:
I am not a fan of terrorism or spy novels so this one was a bit hard for me to read. I did enjoy a lot of the book that was not dealing with terrorism and spies. I really enjoyed reading about the wedding and the craziness  involved in their wedding, and was thankful I had none of those problems when planning my own wedding.  A few things were a little unbelievable in the book, but it was an ok read and I only say that because it turned out to not really be my type of book.
In the book the race is on to get everything in place for the Social event of the of the year. Mac Faraday and Archie Monday's wedding, which is 3 days away.  The story takes place mostly in Deep Creek at or around the Famous Spencer Inn and Spencer Manor. Both of which are owned by Mac Faraday. A team of hit men show up to kill Mac,  the Brides mother, and their dog Gnarly.
I love how Lauren Carr introduces you to the cast at the very front of the book.  I kind of skimmed over it at first, but as I got into the book I really liked having it there as a reference when a new character showed up, since I have not read the other books in the series. I like her writing style she does try to keep your attention and to keep turning the pages. She does a great job with details, she tells you just enough to let you picture it without boring you to tears by making the book 3/4 details. I really loved that.

Once Again, With Blood The Island Trilogy Book 2 Larry Weiner

Once Again, With Blood
The Island Trilogy
Book 2
Larry Weiner

Genre: Horror/Dark Comedy

Publisher:  Forsaken
Imprint of Booktrope

ISBN: 2940150858305

Number of pages: 220

Cover Artist:  Larry Weiner

Book Description:

"We're getting the band back together!"

For Kyle Brightman, bipolar advertising-industry burnout, this is good news and bad news. Good, because he'll get to see his zombie-killing friends again, and be reunited with Cate, the zombie he loves (yeah, yeah, I know, read PARADISE ROT and you'll get it). Bad, because having to blast his way through battalions of bloodless corpses took a brutal toll on Kyle's already fragile psyche. But duty, and booty, calls. And soon Kyle finds himself on another tropical island, duped again into creating an ad campaign to lure unsuspecting Middle Americans into the greedy mouth of ancient madness. This time, it's vampires. But with the help of a) his comrades-in-ass-kicking; b) the love of a good (cold) woman; c) the enduring power of Herb Alpert; and d) the awesomeness that is Charo, Kyle just might find a way to save thousands of lives. And what little's left of his sanity.

Splattered with folklore, dripping with history, ONCE AGAIN, WITH BLOOD, Larry Weiner's sequel to the uproarious comic romp PARADISE ROT, is what you get if Jimmy Buffett, Carl Hiaasen, Sarah Silverman and Hunter S. Thompson took turns pummeling Anne Rice with a cricket bat.

Available at Amazon   BN

Bright Rechargeable LED Bike Light Set by OXYLED

This is the best bike light set I have seen. The light is amazing for not only a bike headlight but it is a great flashlight. The 2 back lights are awesome also. The flashlight fits simply into the handlebar mount very securely and very easily. There are no tools needed for anything in this set. The back lights are on a rubbery strap which buckles together securely. The flashlight has 3 modes, hi, low, and strobe. The tail lights also have 3 modes, Hi, slow blinking, and quick blinking.
The set comes in a very nice very padded box. In the box you get - 1 x Aluminum alloy bike headlight.
- 1 x Bike headlight mount.
- 2 x USB rechargeable 18650 Li-ion batteries.
- 2 x Bike tail light. (CR2032 batteries included)
- 1 x User manual.
- 1 x Warranty card.

The batteries are the coolest I have seen, The top folds back and under the top is a USB plug in. It plugs into any USB charger, power bank, or computer and charges. No wires needed.
This would make a perfect gift for anyone who rides a bike, or even the kids on 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers, go carts, ETC.

INSTANT Read -Accurate Digital Meat Thermometer by Online Gadgetz

This is a very nice meat thermometer. I love that it has the sheath to store it in with the pocket clip. My husband deep fries a turkey for the holidays and is always carrying a meat thermometer in his pocket, more often then not the thermometer hits the ground or worse yet falls in the vat of oil. Now it can be clipped to his pocket and wont fall out. It does fit snugly in the sheath. The screen is a little small and out in the light a little hard to read. Other then that it is great and seems to pretty accurate. I love the cooking card that comes with. That has been stuck to the side of my microwave so it is easy to see from the stove.

Spice Up Your Life Herb Grinder/Tobacco Grinder/Spice Grinder

I am a from scratch cook, there are no boxed meals served in my house. I am also a budding Gourmet cook. I love using spices, and I really love using fresh spices and herbs. This is at the top of my list of favorite kitchen gadgets, and let me tell you I have tons of gadgets. I have  couple of spice grinders including an electric one, but this one works better then any of them. This one has very sharp teeth and grinds everything perfectly. Took me a time or 2 of experiments to get the consistency down I wanted, but now that I have it I love it. It is so easy to use, just put your herbs, spices, or whatever in the top chamber and twist.
The grinder is made of Aerospace grade aluminium. It has a magnetic lid, which I really love. This is a 3 tier spice grinder. The grinding section, the screened section and then the pollen catcher.
This would make a great gift for anyone on your list who loves to cook. This grinder can also be used for tobacco, but I cannot say how it works as I haven't tried it for that.

Parasom P6 V4.1 Bluetooth Mini Bluetooth Earbuds Headphones

I have a couple of pairs of bluetooth earbuds, but I love these, I love that they hook over my ear instead of just having to jam them in my ears like the others. The hook is great, after a while having normal earbuds stuff in your ears they start to hurt, With this pair I put the smallest pair of the earbuds on them and hook it over my ear and they are extremely comfortable. Even with the smallest set of earbuds they noise isolation still woks well. The sound with these is very crisp and clear, there is no lag. They partnered very easily and very quickly with all of my devices. I use this earbud set while working, walking, and even while just setting. I have had no problems at all with it. It comes with the earbud headset, 3 sizes of earbuds, the charging cable, instruction sheet, and Shirt clip, all in a nice box. This does have inline volume power on off mutifunction buttons and microphone. This would make a great gift also.

Premium Chalkboard Labels - HUGE MEGA 96 Label Pack by Stardom Crafts

I just love this pack of Stardom Crafts Chalkboard labels. There are 96 labels in 8 different shapes. The labels are about 3 1/2 x 2 inches, give or take since all the labels are different shapes. I can label everything in my house if I wanted to. Instead we are going to use these for the holidays to make the cookie mix jars for gifts. We will be writing the recipes in these labels and sticking them to the jars. I also make candles and will be writing the scent name on the candle jar with these labels. These labels are reusable, just wipe with a damp cloth and the writing does come off. The writing when dry is smudge proof until you get them wet. I will be using the Stardom Crafts Liquid chalk markers. This is a great company of great quality products.
