Years and an Ocean by Jo Noelle – Blog Tour & Giveaway

?
Years and an Ocean by Jo Noelle
Going to a séance was supposed to be a harmless diversion in Victorian England, but for Delia Spencer, it was life altering. Since that day, she has been plagued by fainting spells, while her consciousness visits Elle Thomas more than a century in the future. In modern-day New York, Elle has kept secret the dream-like memories of Delia’s life. As the visits have become more frequent, Elle is confused about what is her life and what is not. Back in England, Delia’s father is determined to marry her off to any marginally suitable man before her illness becomes known to society. But will Delia consent, now that she’s had a taste of Elle’s independence?

Excerpt:

Cool grass tickles against the back of my calves, and my palms press flat to the ground to hold me up. It feels light here, and I know I have a wide smile. There are people cheering around me on all sides—our shoulders bump now and again as we enjoy the game. We’re watching soccer teams at the summer six-on-six tournament. Lately, orienting my brain to this other life takes a moment for Elle’s consciousness to kick in and push mine back. Sometimes my thoughts and confusions push through, disturbing us both.
During the early days of my visions, I felt scandalized by the wanton fashions and vulgar language of Elle and her friends. But with so many visits over the years, I realize they are just like me, only they’re free. Now I embrace the visits and look forward to them.
Sometimes the memories come slowly—like now. I should know that guy—Elle does. A familiar man on the red team slows his pace and stops in front of our group, cocking his head to the side expectantly. The girls around me break into applause, to which he bows and runs up and down the side of the field again, warming up to sub in a bit.
“Is Ty obvious, or do you think Meg still thinks he’s just a friend?” Cami asks.
Before I can respond, Meg leans over me and throws water on Cami’s legs. “Yes, we’re just friends. He flirts with everyone.”
“Um, no.” Cami’s deadpan expression clearly shows she thinks Meg is clueless—or delusional.
“Not with me either,” Avery answers, confirming Cami’s suggestion.
Cami rubs the water into her legs. “Don’t deny it—you love his attention, and you know it. Attention’s not a bad thing though—I would love attention from David, or Marc, or even Sean.”
“Sure, whatever.” Meg’s retort is halfhearted.
Cami continues, “Or Tim, or James, or the other keeper out there—who’s he? He’s pretty hot.”
Avery starts in too. “So Meg, do you like Ty?”
“I don’t know. I mean he’s hot, but he totally flirts with everyone.”
“Not me. He jokes with all of us, but he’s serious with you. You should give him a chance. He’s nice,” Avery says.
Everyone turns to look at me, “Okay, Elle, you’ve been quiet. What’s your opinion?” Cami says.
“Yeah, he’s cute.” I shrug. Honestly, my eyes have been following someone on his team, but I can’t quite place him. It seems like I should with the way my heart feels drawn to him. When he runs past, I watch with excitement, hoping he’ll look my way.
Cami isn’t satisfied “But…?”
“The taller forward is hot—in fact, I’ve been watching just him this whole time. I can’t wait till the end of the game. I hope he pulls his shirt off,” I say, struggling to hold back the dizzying attraction I feel.
Laughter roars around me.
“It’s the truth.”
Meg spews soda out her nose. Avery, still giggling, hands her a tissue from her bag.
I look at Cami, hoping for an explanation, but my answer comes from Avery.
“Luke? As in Cami’s older brother, Luke? You don’t need to be so cryptic calling him ‘the forward’. No shocker—you’re always watching him.”
Cami turns to look at me straight in the eyes, “When did that start up again? Aren’t you in the off position of your off-on-off-on relationship?”
Why would I ever stop dating him? “I don’t know? Not long, maybe since kick off? He’s amazing—it’s not like I can’t appreciate it.”
“Okay, so you’ve forgotten whatever it was that made you end things all of two mighty weeks ago?” Cami asks.
I ended it? Confusion gives way to an emotion more centered in my chest—a dull ache. “Nope, I’m just enjoying the view.” I shrug as Cami mimes sticking her finger down her throat gagging. “He’s cute right, Meg?” I look at her, waiting.
“I sorta just see him as Cami’s older brother too. So, no. Sorry.”
“Avery?”
“Incredibly, smokin’, Greek-god hot. But I’m taken.” Avery turns her eyes toward Cami. “I’m with her on this one,” she says, pointing at me.
“Thank you.” The ache grows, and another sensation pushes forward. Hurt, the kind that comes from betrayal. I try to capture a memory to match the emotion, but it’s just out of reach.

Praise for Years and an Ocean
I enjoyed this fresh take on characters that connect over differing time periods. The characters were rich and interesting, and I loved the historical aspect with the modern. Clean romance is a bonus. The light fantasy elements bordered on paranormal, but never got out of the realm of plausibility. Good writing and a story I can recommend. ~Renae Mackley
This book was not at all predictable, which I love! Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, Jo Noelle took me for a ride. ~Stacy Carroll

My Review:
I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

This was a very interesting story. It took you through the gambit of emotions, at times almost gut wrenching, sad, happy ect ect. I really liked how it was not hard to follow or keep track of the different but yet the same story.
In the story you meet Ella in present day New York. Then you meet Delia in 1870 England. These are the 2 main characters of the book and let me just say they are very well written characters.
Delia participates in a seance and shortly after she beings having "spells", where she jumps in time and literally lands in Ella in the present day.
Ok UGG!! I don't want to give the story away. Pretty much everything I want to say about the book will give part of the plot away. So You will just have to read the book.

Swaddlez Bamboo Crib Mattress Protector Review

Crib mattresses are an expensive baby necessity and I wanted to prolong the life of it by preventing wear and tear with a mattress protector. First and foremost my baby’s health and safety are at the top of my list when I’m purchasing any products so I needed something that didn’t contain harmful chemicals. Swaddlez bamboo crib mattress has a waterproof layer made of TPU which doesn’t leach chemicals. The fabric is a quilted layer made of 77% bamboo and 23% polyester. It’s also machine washable for easy clean up. After opening the package I instantly noticed how soft the fabric was. One of the great things about bamboo is that is gets softer and more absorbent after each wash. It didn’t have a chemically odor and is well made. It goes on like a fitted sheet and was a quick and easy to put on. The fit was perfect and snug so it stays put, keeping baby and the mattress safe. It’s a great gift option for an expectant parent or for anyone wanting to limit their child’s exposure to harmful chemicals while ensuring the longevity of their infants crib mattress. I received this product in exchange for my honest review.

EXCERPT:

The Chief says, “Explain the circumstances regarding the arrest of Thomas Barstow today.”

Tightening his arms around his chest, Landis knows this is the bullshit he was warned about in the academy. This is the part of the force he did not sign up for. Serving the community is only 5% of it. The other 95% is this shit.

Landis says, “Well, sir, I was writing parking tickets on East Kansas Avenue when I got the 9-1-1 call of a possible sexual assault in the area.”

The Chief interrupts. “Did you receive a call from police dispatch … or did you overhear dispatch make an all-units call?”

Landis labors to take in a deep breath. “I should say that I overheard the all-units call.”

Special Prosecutor Lancaster is already taking notes and barely looks up. Landis stares at the prosecutor and is not sure he has ever seen someone scribble so fast. These bastards are setting him up.

“Officer Landis.”

Landis brings his eyes back to the Chief. “Yes, sir?”

“Please continue.”

Landis sighs and begins to see the victim all over again in his head as he relives the events. “Well, I overheard the call and was about two blocks away, so I went to the address dispatch mentioned. Once I got there, I realized that I was the first on the scene.”

The Chief asks a question everyone in the room knows the answer to. “When you say that you were the first on the scene, does that mean you were the first responder?”

“Yes, I was the first responder,” noticing the special prosecutor has stopped writing to look at him for the answer.

The Chief nods. “Continue.” The special prosecutor goes back to writing.

“I saw the victim was an African American female that was beaten. Her face was bloody … she was missing some front teeth and had two black eyes. Her nose was all …”

The Chief’s voice grows louder. “What did you do after seeing the victim, Landis?”

His heart beats in his throat, Landis yells, “I went after the bastard next, that’s what I did.”

The Chief relaxes his posture and lowers his voice. The look on his face reveals he just got the answer he was looking for. “We don’t go after bastards, Officer Landis … We follow evidence that leads us to perps.”

Landis remains tight-lipped and redder than a stop sign, squeezing each armrest with both hands.

The Chief asks, “What is the first responder’s primary duty?”

Landis lets out a deep breath. “To secure the scene, call for medical attention if needed, and to wait for backup.” Rage makes its way in as the young cop grits his teeth. “Do you mind telling me what the fuck this is about? I take a fucking rapist off the street and …”

Before he can finish, the Chief rises to his feet and raises his voice. “This is about protocol, kid. Something your hotheaded ass didn’t follow. Because of your dereliction to duty, a rapist may end up going free unless the DA can find a way to save this case. If you want to be a police officer on my force, then you have to count for one … You must, count for one. This was not the work of a trained police officer.”

His face as red and hot as a branding iron fresh off the coals, Landis stands. “This is about truth. Do you remember our front seat companion that gives us the right to kick a bad guy in the ass? Well, it’s justice. And that’s what the victim got today. Justice.”

The fed up Chief waves off his green officer. “Save your speeches until you run for office. This type of shoddy police work is why you will never make detective … You find value in seeking the truth versus following procedure. Go pack your desk. You’re looking at a two-week suspension, son.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

My infatuation with writing was born before I ever took my first breath, somewhere on the rural plains of Eastern North Carolina, nourished by the adventures of my grandmother’s childhood. From the time I was only four or five years old, her memories gave flight to my imagination and fuel to my curiosities. Her stories widened my eyes to the fascinatingly bizarre in the everyday.

As a young girl, my grandmother would bring her puppy with her to stalk rabbits every morning. The two of them would chase an unlucky long-eared rascal until it escaped into a hollow at the base of a tree, and she would run a stick around the inside of the opening as though churning butter. The spell of the sound and vibration would lure the rabbit out of the tree and into her hands.

Good fiction, inventive and provocative fiction, reverberates in readers and spellbinds them. It can spur surprise, delight, discomfort, and revelation and defy reason. As a storyteller, I strive to help others solve their problems by sharing things that I have read about, heard about, and seen. But I also prize the look on people’s faces when they hear the brilliant punch line of a joke, or when they experience an epiphany that knocks the logical wind out of them. These are the reactions that I live to inspire in my audiences when I write paranormal thrillers.

My obsession with the extraordinary in my writing might also, ironically, stem from my 20-year career in the U.S. Army. I can allow my mind to wander in the extraterrestrial sphere while my love for my country keeps me grounded in domestic affairs. Of all of my accomplishments, serving as a paratrooper in a Special Forces Group and a Field Artillery outfit during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm claims high rank. Few situations force a person to confront his humanity as painfully as going off to war, and this experience taught me both to accept accountability for my actions and to trust others. Eventually, I became a successful Army Recruiter and Station Commander, earning the Top Recruiting Station awards in Dallas and Seattle Recruiting Battalions. North Carolina Central University granted me a Public Service Award for my work in the local community. And currently, I serve fellow veterans as an HR Specialist for the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Other passions of mine include playing chess, traveling, and indulging in my contrarian nature by instigating debate. Spending time with my wife tops the list of my life’s privileges, however. Whether I am entertaining her with my emulation of Laurence Olivier as Marcus Crassus or protecting her from an elk during one of our photography excursions in the wild, I treasure her companionship and affection.

When I was twelve years old, I announced to my Aunt Becky and Cousin Tony that I wanted to write a book. They stared at me in astonishment. The world of publishing was an enigma to simple country folks in Beaufort, North Carolina in 1982. These days I am achieving my dream with the ebook, a medium through which I can express my individuality without sacrificing my voice to expectations of marketability, popularity, and deadlines. My goal is to create an opportunity for escapism that is bold and absolute.

Nice armband, holds phone securely, and holds onto your arm securely with comfortable soft sided velcro. it has a slots at the top and  at the bottom for  headphone access.
