Excerpt Two:

Caitlin took a fortifying sip of her coffee and welcomed the kick of the whisky. She had no interest in him. Her brain was in charge, and it knew what was good for her; she would go husband-hunting among the business men of San Diego. One of them must have a great body too. The devil on her shoulder snickered. You keep telling yourself that. Her ovaries agreed with the devil. Her angel, a by-the-book accountant and her internal guardian of rational thought, told them to keep quiet.

The older guy nodded at Annette. “Be there in a minute,” he mouthed.

Mr. Built looked over his shoulder, his eyes narrowed, and the intensity of his stare set sparks zinging in all of Caitlin’s unmentionable places. One corner of his mouth tilted up, and his eyes crinkled as if he knew exactly what he was doing to her. Rational thought sputtered to a halt and died.

“Who’s that?” Nope, her brain was not in charge, and her mouth clearly had a will and desires of its own.

“The guy behind the bar? Stan, the owner.”

Lynn chuckled. “Not him, Annette. The sparks are flying between your Cat and our Corey.”

“Really?” Annette’s eyes widened in enquiry.

Caitlin groaned. “No matchmaking. He’s just, you know…” She waved a hand in his direction and risked another look. One hundred percent man with a great ass. Her mouth watered. “Built.”

Laura Boon stole her first romance from her father’s bookshelves as a teenager, The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, and was immediately captivated. After holding a variety of positions in publishing, from bookseller to sales rep and publicist, she eventually found the courage to write her own stories. Interview with Laura Boon:

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

There are many because Corey is a very romantic man even though he swore off love when his first wife died too young from cancer. It’s hard to pick a favorite part without spoilers, but there is a scene where Caitlin is teaching Corey the steps to the lion dance that they are going to perform at the Maple Sugar Ball. Corey takes over her phone and finds a song he wants to dance to – The Runaways by the Corrs – and shows Caitlin exactly why the waltz was considered scandalous when it first came out. I love this moment for all sorts of reasons. I love a man who can dance. I love the high one gets from dancing. I thought Corey was going to go with a two-step because I knew he wanted to hold Caitlin close. However, he surprised me picking a waltz initiating a turnaround. Caitlin’s been teaching him, and now he is teaching her. It’s also a turning point in their relationship because Corey has been running scared, and it’s at this moment that he decides to give the attraction between him and Caitlin air and see where it might lead. Off the dance floor, for starters…
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I’d like to spend some time with Caitlin’s granny. She’s an outrageous, naughty old lady who is still very connected to her Chinese heritage. I want her to teach me how to play mahjong and tell me stories about her life in San Diego as a young woman.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I read it for the first time when I was very young, and I was instantly drawn to Jane and her lively mind and independence despite her situation. All the relationships in the novel are complicated, as in real life, so I was delighted when Jane and Mr Rochester (does anyone think of him as Edward?) finally got their happy ever after. Jane Eyre is chockful of drama even although there is not an adventure sub-plot, and I have enormous admiration and respect for authors who can pull that off.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

My characters are a combination of my imagination and physical and emotional traits of real people. Sometimes I’ll ‘borrow’ a physical characteristic from a friend (or foe) and combine it with an emotional strength or flaw I want to explore. Sometimes I’ll borrow the flaw and assign it to a character who walked into my imagination. If I struggle to lock down the physical features of a character, I’ll often type something like ‘brown-haired, brown eyed petite woman’ into my search engine and then trawl the internet until I see my character’s ‘dobbelganger’.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

Story-tellers are magic-makers in my opinion. They’ve given me countless hours of pleasure over the years. I wanted to share the magic and make someone else happy. Pay it forward. It’s a bit like touching the sun, glorious but dazzling and also scary.
