Great Summer Reads Countdown Blitz Day 20

Morgan J Muir lives in Utah with her fantastic husband, three offspring, and as many cats (but she doesn’t carry them with kits in sacks, and has never been to St. Ives). She grew up riding horses and motorcycles and listening to her grandmother read poetry. She grew up reading any sci-fi/fantasy novel she could get her hands on and so was surprised the day she discovered that she also really enjoyed historical fiction.

Morgan always loved to write and draw and her parents always liked to say that they knew she’d write a book some day.  Ever since she was small she told stories and drew pictures for her tales.  When she got old enough, all of her spare time between classes was spent writing and she always had a notebook with her.

Her first novel was originally written after her first child was born, to help her pass the long, lonely hours as a new stay-at-home mom.  As her kids got older and more came she was too busy to do much with her stories, until one year she was introduced to NaNoWriMo, which finally rekindled the spark that led her to finish what she’d started.

Morgan’s favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, Kristen Britain and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Mariah has chosen to become a vampire, but she can’t remember why.

Upon waking in the labyrinthine caves of Sophus, a centuries-old vampire, Mariah can’t remember all the choices that brought her there, but she does know there are dangerous secrets hidden within her.  As she learns to control her powerful new body— and its bloodthirsty urges— Mariah discovers a unique ability to travel through a world of spirit, the key to remembering her past, and possibly the future.

At first, it seems her path is simple: learn to control her bloodlust, find her missing husband, and return with him to raise their son. However, things are more complicated than they seem, and neither Sophus nor her husband’s captor is willing to let them go. Mariah must use whatever skills she can to find her husband and protect her still-mortal son, but will it be enough?

Snippet:

Sophus turned to Mariah and grinned. Faster than the other woman could possibly have seen, he moved to shut the door with a solid, ominous thud. He returned to stand before the woman whose eyes darted from the door back to Sophus, nervousness growing in her eyes. He again caressed her neck before he spoke. “She is here to help me send you on your way.”
Mariah watched from near the door as Sophus slid his hand around the back of his victim’s neck, and swept down on the unfortunate woman, his hand muffling her startled scream. Shocked, Mariah tried to look the other way as he bit the woman’s neck and began sucking at the lifeblood. She tried to resist, but the scent of the fresh blood was intoxicating.
Mariah couldn’t help but watch with a dazed fascination, though she had no intention of being a part of this murder. However, as she watched, a voice in her mind, that predator part of herself, wheedled its way into her stunned thoughts. This is necessary for our protection, the voice whispered. She fought the rising bloodlust, but the voice slowly reasoned her into tolerating it. She should accept it. Everyone who’s thought it through knows no one leaves here alive. The girl must have known what was coming. She should join it. It would be a shame to let good blood go to waste. Finally, she lost herself in it. This is what I was made for.

ISBN: 978-0-9968220-4-6
ASIN:

Number of pages: 352
Word Count: approx. 99,250

Book Description:

The uneasy truce between the preternatural species of New Orleans has shattered, with wizards and elves, shifters and vampires—not to mention the historical undead—struggling for ultimate control of the city, including the humans who still think they’re atop the food chain.

They aren’t, however—and the Summer Prince of Faerie wants them to know it.

Stuck in the middle? One unemployed wizard sentinel. For DJ Jaco, war makes for strange bedfellows as she finally embraces her wizard-elven heritage and strikes a deal with the devil so she and her ragtag band of allies can return to defend her hometown. After all, when the undead French pirate Jean Lafitte is the mayor’s newest consultant, things could go horribly wrong.

War is coming to New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras, with the elves and wizards lined up on opposite sides, the shifters with a new leader, the vampires promising loyalty to the highest bidder, and the soul of the Crescent City resting on the outcome of the civil war going on in Faerie between the rival princes of summer and winter.

Mardi Gras Day is approaching fast, and the line between friends and enemies grows thin as DJ tries to stave off open warfare on the St. Charles Avenue parade route.

Laissez les bons temps rouler…but be careful, or the good times might roll too close for comfort.

Excerpt:
I turned to glare at the unicorn.
It was hanging around for some reason.
            “Can
you talk? If not, what are you waiting for?” I made a shooing motion. “Go home
to your whack-job master.”
Because we needed to find out how
it got to our remote beach in the Beyond.
“I’ll find a rope—maybe we can
make a halter,” Rene said, walking toward the house.
Jean also seemed to have had his
fill of unicorn wrangling. “Bah. I shall depart for Old Orleans, Drusilla.
There are people with whom I must discuss matters of import, and perhaps I
might discover the truth about Christof.”
            Fine.
Leave me with the merman and the unicorn.
            He
turned and walked into the transport, disappearing in seconds. He hadn’t
removed his boots, but he had held his pistol out of the water. The pirate had
his priorities straight.
            “Here
is my message.”
I whirled to look at the unicorn,
who was now doing his best Mr. Ed impression.
            “I
knew it.” That freaking unicorn could talk; he’d been waiting to get me alone.
I held up the elven staff, and
the unicorn had the good sense to back up a couple of steps. I slipped my left
hand into my jeans pocket, fingering a couple of potions I’d cooked up in this
rustic paradise using a generator-powered hot plate and my own blood. My
physical magic wouldn’t work outside the human world, but my potions and charms
were fine. The staff worked everywhere.
“Okay, start talking, horse.”
            The
unicorn managed to look offended. “Here is my message,” he repeated. “His Royal
Majesty Florian will be crowned King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and
Beyond in two weeks. You are—”
            “Wait.”
I shook the staff at him, and sparks flew out its tip. “What do you mean, ‘King
of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond’?”
What in the name of Merlin was
that madman up to?
            The
unicorn tossed his head and looked even grumpier. “Here is my message,” he
repeated for the third time. “His Royal Majesty Florian will be crowned King of
Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond in two weeks. You are invited to
attend and pledge fealty at his coronation in New Orleans at the apex of the
celebration the humans call Mardi Gras. Should you die before the appointed
time, this invitation may be considered null and void.”
            And
with that, the unicorn turned, took a big, steaming dump on the sand near my
feet, and made to trot back down the beach from whence he came. I flipped the
lid off one of the charms in my pocket, chased him down the beach, and tossed
it on him. I only hit his tail, which, considering it was a freezing charm,
only made said tail freeze at a ninety-degree angle.
            “Stop,
unicorn, or I’ll toast your rump like a potroast!” I yelled, aiming the staff.
I sent a warning zap of fire onto his rump. My aim had improved a lot in months
since I’d blown up my own SUV and burned down half of Six Flags New Orleans.
I’d had lots of time to practice.
            Unfortunately,
the shot only made the unicorn fly into a gallop. I had no choice but to run
after him and hope I could keep him in sight by moonlight.

Excerpt
“How are we going to solve the murder if we don’t even know where it happened?”

“We are not solving the murder! How many times do I have to explain myself? I’m only trying to honor Jessica’s last wishes by finding somewhere to donate the necklace in her memory.”

“We are totally solving this murder.”

“Did you not read the part where she was shot to death! And the police have no fricking idea what happened?”

Melanie shrugged as if she knew people who were shot to death all the time. “We’ll be fine.”

“We? We are not doing anything. I’m the one who is doing this. We are not doing anything.”

“Fine. Fine. So, Ms. Patterson, what are you going to do next, hmm?” She raised an eyebrow, crossed her arms over her chest, and leaned back in her chair.

“I’m not sure.” Terri tapped her fingers on the table. There was a long pause before she suddenly sat up straight. “Where did the obit say donations were to be sent?”

Melissa pulled the obit up on her tablet. “Westside Soup Kitchen.”

“That’s it!” She snapped her fingers. “I’ve volunteered at that soup kitchen several times. I’ll just go check it out. See if they are a good candidate for receiving the necklace.”

“You volunteered at the same soup kitchen as Jessica? Maybe you met her and don’t remember?”

“No.” Terri shook her head. “I saw a picture of her at the Collins’ house. There’s no way I would have forgotten meeting her.”

“Maybe some of the other volunteers or even the homeless people will remember Jessica. You could ask them about her.”

“Stop trying to solve the murder!”

Melanie readily agreed she wouldn’t get involved in investigating the murder, but Terri knew better than to believe her.

I grew up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on, from my mom's Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When I wasn't flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. But being a lawyer really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out being a B&B owner wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from my adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

Finders, Not Keepers is my thirteenth book.

Holly

I was living the life I always thought I wanted.

Good job, rich fiancé, and a glamorous social life.

But in a blink of an eye it was all taken away.

With nowhere else to go, my aunt offers me a job on her ranch.

I didn’t know I’d be forced to work alongside her gorgeous ranch hand Chase.

I stead of getting my old life back, I’m finding he’s a distraction I didn’t see coming.

Chase

I’ve spent years running from my past.

Don’t stay in one place too long, don’t make long-lasting friendships, and most definitely don’t fall in love.

The day I met Holly, I was done running—I just didn’t know it yet.

Those heels, that skirt—all wrong for the country, but perfect for her.

Her past is keeping her from trusting me.

But I’m going to show her she’s more than worth the wait.

I don’t say anything as he slowly comes closer to me. His gaze heats with each step till he is mere inches from me. “I’m sorry.” His voice is deep. The bravado causes my skin to pepper with goose bumps.
Speaking through my dry throat, I croak out, “For?”
Hesitantly, he places his hands on either side of me on the counter, dipping his head to breathe deeply at the nape of my neck. “For those women interrupting our night. I was enjoying spending time with you.” His lips barely ghost a kiss along my hairline behind my ear, making me tremble. My body is already reacting to his closeness.
“Oh.” I can’t form words with him so close.
“I was hoping you were having a good time too. I have an addiction to hearing your laughter,” he says, trailing small feathery kisses down my neck. His short beard rubbing along my jawline has me tipping my head back and fighting a moan.
“Will you say yes to more of that?” he asks, pulling back to look into my half-lidded eyes.
Fisting his shirt, I yank him closer, and he steps one leg between mine. “Yes, I want more of that.”
His dimpled smirk only lasts for a second before the object I desire is on me—his lips.

The Case of the Sexy Shakespearean by Tara Lain

A cozy mystery with a tongue-tied nerd of a history professor tempted by a gorgeous graduate student and millions of dollars if he can solve one of history's greatest mysteries -- who was Shakespeare really?

The Case of the Sexy Shakespearean
by Tara Lain

Blurb:

Dr. Llewellyn Lewis leads a double life, as both an awkward but distinguished history professor and the more flamboyant Ramon Rondell, infamous writer of sensational historical theories. It's Ramon who first sets eyes on a gorgeous young man dancing in a club, but Llewellyn who meets teaching assistant Blaise Arthur formally at an event held for wealthy socialite Anne de Vere, descendant of Edward de Vere, seventeenth Earl of Oxford-who some believe was the real Shakespeare. Anne wants Llewellyn to prove that claim, even though many have tried and failed. And she's willing to offer a hefty donation to the university if he succeeds.

It also means a chance for Llewellyn to get to know Blaise much better.

Not everyone thinks Llewellyn should take the case-or the money. Between feuding siblings, rival patrons, jealous colleagues, and greedy administrators, almost anyone could be trying to thwart his work... and one of them is willing to kill to do it.

When Anne de Vere turns up dead, the police believe Blaise is the murderer. Only the shy, stuttering professor who has won his heart can prove otherwise...

Excerpt 2 – The Case of the Sexy Shakespearean by Tara Lain

Well, damn. He slowly released a breath and took another as Blaise Arthur appeared in the kitchen doorway.
Blaise looked from Llewellyn’s face to his hand, just inches from grasping the handle of a butcher knife. “Whoa. Hang on, Jim Bowie. Sorry to scare you. Your door was standing open, and I was a little worried that you’d decided to run for Alaska or hang yourself by one of Van Pelt’s neckties.”
A laugh bubbled up from Llewellyn’s belly. That description so perfectly described his options, he just kept chuckling until all three cats looked at him like he was nuts. Marie relaxed her puffed-up fur seemingly one hair at a time, flicked her tail, and returned to her chicken dinner.
Finally he managed to stop laughing. “Uh, how d-did you know w-where I live?”
Blaise cocked his grin to the side. “I followed you, and I must say, I had to move pretty fast to do it.”
What the hell? “W-why?”
“I told you. Suicide prevention.”
Was he disappointed in that answer? He spread his arms. “A-as you see.”
“Feline-feeding duty.”
“I’m a cr-crazy cat lady.”
Blaise leaned against the door, arms crossed, one nicely muscled leg cocked over the other, and a sexy-as-hell grin on his face. “Neither crazy nor a lady so far as I can see.”
“S-so what do you want?”
“There’s a challenging question. Just accept my mother-of-compassion routine at face value and offer me a drink.”
He still frowned. “B-beer? Wine?”
“Beer would be great.”
Llewellyn loved craft beers and took two bottles of Red Headed Stranger from his cooler.
He opened and poured them into pilsner glasses and handed one to Blaise, who stared at the bottle. “Whoa, exotic.” He sipped. “Delicious.”
“From R-Reno.”
“I’ll remember it.”
Llewellyn gestured to the hall and led Blaise back to the big living room with its high ceilings, elaborate crown moldings, and polished oak floors. He sat in an easy chair and indicated that Blaise should sit on the comfortable couch.
Blaise sipped and gazed around. “This is quite a house. How old is it?”
“N-nineteen twenties or thirties.” Why was he chitchatting? What’s he doing here?
“Is it a family home?”
“S-sort of.”
“Are you gay?”
“What?” Llewellyn frowned. “Uh, y-yes. E-everyone knows th-that.”
“Yes, I read it, but I wanted to ask.” He grinned.
The cats padded in, Marie making a straight shot to Llewellyn’s lap, where she turned and stared at Blaise while washing her face and paws.
“She’s the formidable one.”
“Oh y-yes.”
“What’s her name?”
“Marie Antoinette.”
He laughed. “Perfect. Marie, I’ll make it my personal objective to woo you to my side.”
That implied some long-term association.
Blaise took another big mouthful. “It looks like you have a nice life.” He set the still partly full glass on the coffee table and stood. “I’m glad. Thanks so much for the beer.” He walked toward the door. What the hell?
Llewellyn stood, getting a squawk from Marie. “W-why did you ask if I-I’m gay?”
Blaise glanced back over his shoulder. “Because I am.”
“I-I know.” Jesus, why did I say that?
“Am I that obvious?” But he smiled.
Llewellyn shrugged. “No. So?”
Blaise laughed. “See you at work.”
