Book Trailer

Book Reviews:

“The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance is wholly original, different from anything I’ve ever read, yet at the same time familiar and welcoming. There is a wisdom, a power, in Love’s words the likes of which I have never seen before. She awakens in you a renaissance of self, triggered by love and healing and acceptance.

With impeccable prose, a ravishing plot, and bewitching concepts, Love articulates a mesmerizing, incandescent world. She does a brilliant job of blending the scientific and the spiritual, the mathematical and the magical, in a beautiful, balanced whole. This book is fulfilling on so many levels. The writing is poetry. The message is powerful, resonant. The characters are rich, vivid souls clawing their way out of the dark. The story inspires us to be more than we are, to light the world, to erase our shadows with our truth. In a word, it’s spellbinding.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and as a sufferer of mental illness, I completely related to her beautiful, vulnerable cast. Love does an excellent job portraying her characters with such sensitivity and respect. There is a wonderful, passive diversity that is inclusive across the board. My only complaint is that I didn’t have this book when I was a teenager. I have no doubt it will fast become a hallmark of YA queer literature.”

—Halo Scot, Author of Edge of the Breach

“The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance was so much more than I’d been expecting with a YA read. Not only was it captivating and smart, the characters and social situations were real, and it was told in a way that each character’s motivations were clear and explained. Within Jo’s social group, each character had a vice or personal issue that was explained and highlighted in a way that was sensitive to the reader, but still conveying the impact it can have on a young adult. I found myself relating to each and every person in some way, bringing me closer to the story and rooting for the characters. It was beautifully written, remarkably well researched, and fun to read. I found myself wanting more!”

—Ash Knight, Author of Stay

“The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance by Lali A. Love is a delightful read, a well-written meld of fantasy, paranormal and science fiction, with a strong appeal to young adult readers. Sixteen-year-old Jo attends Forest Hill Academy, a preppy co-ed private school for privileged scholars, but she has huge problems to handle. Since the night her mother, Lilac, was taken hostage by a homicidal maniac, she’s been plagued by nightmares. But things escalate when a sinister parasite attacks her classmates, turning them into sleepwalkers, imprisoned in their own bodies. Primed by the Council and Ascending Angel Academy, Jo must accept a difficult mission to embrace her celestial being and unlock the power of creation in order to fight the encroaching darkness. With friends by her side and the Galactic Compass, does she stand a chance against the powers of darkness?

This is a well-plotted and beautifully narrated story. The use of journal entries adds depth to the story and allows readers to understand the emotional turmoil taking place in Jo’s world. It is one of those stories that brilliantly showcase the primordial struggle between light and darkness, good and evil, and I found it interesting to follow the protagonist as she evolves under the watchful gaze of the council that speaks the codes wordlessly to her. The character cast is impressive, and the author provides a clear background to each of them: Nisha, Rey, Daphne, Flynn, and Zaxden. Lali A. Love’s story stands out in its originality, with themes of science and spirituality, and a conflict that is strongly and intelligently articulated. The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance is a wonderful, 5 stars recommended read.”

“We don’t have much time.”

The first words out of my mother’s mouth were not what I had expected. I had expected to find
both of my parents home from work early; I had expected them to want to talk to me; I had expected an endless stream of questions. But not this.

The urgency in my mother’s tone told me this was more than a melancholic response to my impending departure—this was much more. Frowning with concern, I looked from my mother’s knitted brow to my father’s taut jawline. I stood frozen in place, hesitant even to close the door behind me.

“Come in,” my mother rushed on impatiently. “We really don’t have much time.”

Obediently, robot-like, I took a segmented step. My father pulled me forward and deeper into the
kitchen until the door clicked shut behind me.

“You need to listen very carefully to what we’re about to tell you,” my mother told me sternly.

“We won’t have a chance to say anything twice. What you hear, you must never repeat.”

“If any of us are caught sharing this information, we’ll be executed,” my father cut in, voice low
and grave.

NBtM Our Time Will Come by Jean Gallant Marcoux

Our Time Will Come
by Jean Gallant Marcoux

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

After a year in Paris studying painting at l'´Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, HĂ©lene Simard returns home to Quebec City in 1939, with a secret. She has a German fiancĂ©. She can conceal his identity, but not the baby she carries. Hans Werner, her lover, was drafted in the German army, and his dreams of ever reuniting with HĂ©lene are shattered with WWII escalating. In 1942, a bold opportunity arises for him to cross the Atlantic. Hounded by the Canadian police and Nazi assassins, the lovers' hope for a new life together becomes intertwined with a plot to kill Winston Churchill.

"Our Time Will Come is an historical fiction novel that revolves around a romance that began in Paris in 1938. The war impeded the couple’s plans as HĂ©lène returned home to Canada while Hans fulfilled his obligations as a German soldier. Despite the complications of the war, their love motivated them to find a way to be together. The unique perspective that the author shed on this world event kept me intrigued. The exceptional character development and the numerous twists that the narrative took made reading the book pass quickly. Readers of historical fiction would enjoy this author’s innovative angle on World War II. Romance is also a central theme of the book and would satisfy readers of that genre."
-Official OnlineBookClub.org review.

Excerpt Two:

“How was your day?” Milaine asked. “Your grin tells me it was good.”

“I met the most stunning man and he invited me to a picnic,” HĂ©lène said, bouncing from foot to foot, and then deciding to place her painting material on the floor.

“I want to go, but I’m not sure I should. He’s gorgeous, and he has the cutest accent, but I don’t know…”

“Hold on, hold on,” Milaine said. “Who is he? Where is he from? What kind of cute accent?”

“His name is Hans Werner,” HĂ©lène recounted, pacing. “He’s from Berlin—”

“HĂ©lène, never trust a German!” Milaine stopped for a moment for emphasis. “None of us Belgians do, after what they did to us during the Great War.”

“You don’t understand. You should see him; he’s so handsome.”
“Such a good-looking man is probably married,” Milaine said, “or more likely in a liaison.” “He doesn’t wear a ring.”

“HĂ©lène, you’re so naĂŻve. What if he is one of these Nazi maniacs we see in magazines and newsreels in the movie theatres?”

“He’s so nice,” HĂ©lène said, pouring herself a glass of Chablis in one of the two cheap wine glasses that came with the apartment. “I’ll ask him all these questions next Sunday.”

Guest post by Jean Gallant Marcoux,
author of
OUR TIME WILL COME

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?
     For Our Time Will Come, which is my debut novel, I knew how the story would end. Once I developed my two protagonists, I let them do what they wanted to do, as long as they followed the historical timeline.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
     Our Time Will Come is the story of HĂ©lène Simard, a French-Canadian girl from QuĂ©bec City, and Hans Werner from Berlin, falling in love in Paris in 1938, where they were both art student. They decided to marry, but WWII was brewing and Hans was drafted in the German army. HĂ©lène returned to Canada. The book is about Hans’s daring attempt to reunite with HĂ©lène, crossing the Atlantic in the middle of a war. Once he did, he was hounded by the Canadian police and Nazi assassins. Our protagonists’ hope for a new life together was intertwined with a plot to kill Churchill.
     My book is a must read for fans of WWII thrillers, because of the Canadian angle of the war. They will encounter Canadian counterespionage personnel and Navy ships, fighting German U-boats and German spies. Love being a central theme of the book, Romance enthusiasts should adore it.
Have you written other books that have not been published?
     I have written articles that were published in historical society magazines in my native QuĂ©bec.
Pen, typewriter or computer?
     I write with a pen all the elements to be included in a scene, in no particular order. Then, I let my fingers on the keyboard do the writing. Later, I come back for as many editing sessions are needed until I am happy with the result..
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
     All writers love to hear from their readers, and find out what they liked or didn’t like about their book, and answer any question they might have. Do not hesitate to contact me.
