Excerpt Two:

The Darknet Chapter 18 – A Hillside Dump

The ride to the crime scene was deathly silent. Nothing personal. That was just Jake’s usual way, an angry meditation to prep for facing down the grim reaper’s handy work. I could have let the Crown Vic chauffeur us but driving gave me something to do. It was a short trip down the Shoreway towards Battery Park. We got off at West 49th Street, near the Parkview Nite Club, a blues club Jake used to haunt in his youth until it went too upscale for his taste. The collection of official vehicles with flashing lights on Herman Avenue made GPS unnecessary.

As usual, Jake jumped out and went right for the body before the engine was even off. I tracked down the patrol unit that was first on the scene to get briefed. The guys were responding to a call from Animal Control which got a call from an elderly dog walker who noticed a growing circle of buzzards overhead and called to get a presumed carcass removed from the neighborhood before it drew coyotes which surely, she feared, would have eventually turned their hunger towards her beloved Bichon. I spotted her easily, cradling her pet in her arms among the gaggle of gawkers pooling outside the crime scene tape. Even though patrol had taken her statement, I went to speak with her. I didn’t expect to get much more from her—and I didn’t—but sometimes it’s more about “customer relations” than police work, and witnesses feel slighted if they don’t get to speak with a detective. Something Jake had no patience for…

Interview with M.T. Bass

1. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?

In a previous novel, In the Black, I had a complicated story that covered two generations—the Sixties during Vietnam and the Forties during World War II.  I had more characters than a Tolstoy novel and about halfway through I thought, Man, this is totally out of control. So I decided I had to lay things out in a grand outline, with characters plotted against the time line and what they would all be doing through the end of the novel.  I think I spent two or three months laying it all out and I thought, This is going to be easy now.

Well…four or five chapters on, I found out that none of the characters were doing what it said they were supposed to do in the outline.  And I tried as hard as I could, but nothing worked.  So I gave it up and let them figure it out.  And I think it worked out for the better.

So for me, starting a novel is like working without a net, because I don’t really know what is going to happen. But that’s okay. It’s entertaining that way for me, too.

2. Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.

Don’t listen to me. Listen to the guys who are a whole heck-of-a-lot smarter than me.

Stephen Hawking warned that artificial intelligence could one day "spell the end of the human race."

Elon Musk of Tesla and Space X says that AI is one of the most pressing threats to the survival of the human race.  He said, "With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon.”

Yeah, so what happens when Siri, Alexa and Cortana become more than just voices in pods spying on our lives, and a new breed of cyberpunk hacker emerges turning synthoids into hit men? And if it’s not bad enough outsourcing murder to a robot, but what about digitally replicating serial killers?

3. Have you written any other books that are not published?

I have a finished novel called Jungleland, that I’ve sent off to my editor for proofing.  It’s a sequel to my first published book, My Brother’s Keeper. It’s fourteen years later and Hawk, the main character, is flying as a mercenary pilot in the Congo civil war. It will be released in October.

My very first book, The Twilight War, probably won’t make it into print. You know, it’s “one of those.”

4. Pen or type writer or computer?

When I started out, I bought narrow ruled yellow writing pads by the dozens and boxes of Papermate mechanical pencils and scribbled myself to death.  Now I have Scrivener on my laptop and iPad so I go direct to pixels. It took a while to get used to it and now I don’t think I can go back.

5. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Hey, thanks!

Courting Chaos Book 1
by Heather Young-Nichols
Genre: Rockstar Romance

A sexy drummer and a rock god’s daughter on tour together for the summer… what could possibly go wrong?

Indie

When Cross Rhodes from Courting Chaos mistakes me for a groupie and tries to kick me out of the venue, I remind myself that touring with my dad isn’t always easy. I don’t fall for rock stars—ever but Cross makes me want to break all the rules.

Summer fun crashes around me when I discover one of the openers prefers his women too young. Unfortunately for him, intimidation doesn’t keep me quiet.

Cross

Opening for Kissing Cinder is the break my band needs and none of us can mess this up. Then I try to remove a hot, sassy blonde from the venue and now I can’t get her off my mind. Indie’s off limits. The daughter of a man that can make or break us. What the hell am I thinking?

The only thing I know for sure is that I will protect Indie from my bass player at all costs.

Ransom
Courting Chaos Book 2

Bellamy Harper needs an escape and becomes Ransom’s challenge.

Bellamy

My life has taken a hard turn. So, when my best friend asks me to join her on tour with her dad, I can’t say yes fast enough. I expected to be surrounded hot rock stars. But I never saw Ransom or our intense attraction coming. He’s impossible to ignore but given my crazy ex, I’m determined to keep my distance. That only works for about a minute before my former boyfriend shows up ready to reclaim what he says is his.

Ransom

The stand-offish red head suddenly on the tour has me falling all over her and she’s everywhere I go since her best friend is dating mine. It takes a lot of hard work to break through Bellamy’s tough exterior and of course that’s the moment my ex-girlfriend decides to screw up my life. The media attention is too much for Bellamy and I can’t blame her. She has her own problems and didn’t ask for this.

With her psycho ex-boyfriend and my secret-keeping ex-girlfriend hindering any hope of a relationship, we’ll both have to confront our pasts if we want any chance at a future.

Booker
Courting Chaos Book 3

We come from opposite worlds and really shouldn’t work…

Paige

I’m used to sacrifice and hard work. Growing up in the foster system didn’t leave a lot of room for error. Then I land a job with one of the richest families in the state that might allow me to have the life I’ve been working so hard toward. When their son, Booker, comes home, I try so hard to keep things professional. Him being around make it impossible to ignore my feelings. But I work for his family… there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed.

Booker

When I’m called home to see my sick mother, I sure didn’t expect to find a hot as hell nurse living in the house, taking care of my mother. Paige is smart, sassy, and unimpressed by my rock star status. But my growing feelings could get in the way of getting back out on the road to escape my tense relationship with Dad.

I need to cement my place with the band and Paige can’t screw up her career. Can we find a way to do both?

Dixon
Courting Chaos Book 4

It’s the opportunity of a lifetime and he’s the one person who could derail it all.

Barrett

Getting a job has been my focus since the moment I graduated from college. And maybe coming to terms with my less than amazing childhood. So, when a job opens up to be the personal assistant of Courting Chaos’ manager, I go for it. Too soon, Dixon begins worming his way into my heart, everything might come unraveled.

Being with him could cost me the job he needs and the life I’ve dreamed of.

Dixon

Everyone in the band might be catching feelings but that’s not remotely on my radar. I’m perfectly happy living the rock star life as the guitarist for Courting Chaos. With all the drama around the guys, easy is safest. Until everything changes when a joke gets out of hand and I do something I immediately regret. Making amends for my own stupidity might turn into the best thing to ever happen to me.

Being with her might not be the smart choice and certainly isn’t the easy one. Yet here we are… falling.

Something Irish
Courting Chaos Book 5

When the trip comes to an end, Maggie is horrified to discover that her purse has disappeared. Her driver’s license and passport along with it. Even worse… She can’t leave Ireland with her mother.

Two more weeks of Eagan O’Brien.

Can Maggie turn that one night stand into something more or will luck not be one her side?

The
Ghosts of Ravencrest
The
Ravencrest Saga Book 1
by
Tamara Thorne & Alistair Cross

Genre:
Gothic, Paranormal Horror

Darkness
Never Dies ...

Ravencrest
Manor has always been part of the family. The ancestral home of the
Mannings, Ravencrest’s walls have been witness to generations of
unimaginable scandal, horror, and depravity. Imported stone by stone
from England to northern California in the early 1800s, the manor now
houses widower Eric Manning, his children, and his staff. Ravencrest
stands alone, holding its memories and ghosts close to its dark
heart, casting long, black shadows across its grand lawns, through
the surrounding forests, and over the picturesque town of Devilswood,
below.

Dare
to Cross the Threshold ...
Ravencrest
Manor is the most beautiful thing new governess, Belinda Moorland,
has ever seen, but as she learns more about its tangled past of
romance and terror, she realizes that beauty has a dark side.
Ravencrest is built on secrets, and its inhabitants seem to be
keeping plenty of their own - from the handsome English butler, Grant
Phister, to the power-mad administrator, Mrs. Heller, to Eric Manning
himself, who watches her with dark, fathomless eyes. But Belinda soon
realizes that the living who dwell in Ravencrest have nothing on the
other inhabitants - the ones who walk the darkened halls by night …
the ones who enter her dreams … the ones who are watching … and
waiting …

Welcome
to Ravencrest ...
Who
is the man digging in the garden beyond Belinda’s bedroom window?
Who - or what - is watching her from the vents? From ghostly screams
and the clutching bony fingers of death in the indoor pool, to the
trio of gliding nuns in the east wing who come at Belinda with black
blazing eyes, to the beckoning little girl in the red dress who died
more than two centuries ago, Belinda is thrust into a world of waking
nightmares where there is no distinction between the living and the
dead, and there are no limits to the horrors that await. Witchcraft
is afoot at Ravencrest and as unspeakable terrors begin to unfold,
Belinda realizes that her beautiful new home is a keeper of tragedy,
a collector of souls. And it wants to add her to its collection …

The
Witches of Ravencrest

Dark
and Unnatural Powers
In
a remote part of California just above the coastal town of
Devilswood, Ravencrest Manor, imported stone-by-stone from England
more than two centuries ago, looms tall and terrifying, gathering its
dark and unnatural powers, and drawing those it wants as its
own.

Murder
Lurks in the Shadows
Governess
Belinda Moorland has settled into life at Ravencrest and, as summer
gives way to autumn, romance is in the air. She and multi-millionaire
Eric Manning are falling in love … but powerful forces will stop at
nothing to keep them apart. And as the annual Harvest Ball is set to
begin, evil abounds at Ravencrest. Murder lurks in the shadows, evil
spirits freely roam the halls, a phantom baby cries, signaling a
death in the mansion, and in the notoriously haunted east wing, three
blood-soaked nuns, Sisters Faith, Hope, and Charity, tend to the
demented needs of a maid gone mad.

Vengeful
Spirits
Ravencrest
has come to life. In the gardens below, granite statues dance by
moonlight, and a scarecrow goes on a killing rampage, collecting a
gruesome assortment of body parts from unwilling donors … But

to grind with the powerful witch, Cordelia Heller - and Belinda
becomes her weapon of choice.

Exorcism
The
Ravencrest Saga Book 3

The
Devil Comes to Ravencrest

The
Jazz Age
In
the 1920s, Henry Manning ruled Ravencrest with an iron fist. He held
debauched parties that would have inspired Jay Gatsby himself. From
the Manning fortune to a beautiful wife, the silent film star known
as the White Violet, Henry had it all … including a loyal cult that
worshipped the demon Forneus.

Deal
with the Devil
Violet
lost her life putting a stop to the demented perversions that Henry
and his demonic familiar visited upon Ravencrest …  but now
that evil has returned.

The
Soulless Child
In
the night, an innocent maid is seduced by a demon lover. A child is
born, but it is not of this earth. Father Antonio DeVargas is
summoned as ghostly parties light up the old poolhouse and phantom
screams rip open the night. Meanwhile, the White Violet wanders the
halls of Ravencrest warning the inhabitants of death and disaster to
come.

And
the current master of Ravencrest, Eric Manning, is decidedly not
himself.

Midnight.
The witching hour. Watery echoes in an empty building. The grand
Greek Pool at Ravencrest Manor babbles and gurgles as
chlorine-scented water flows like cool blood in veins and arteries.
The moon, full and high above the arched glass ceiling, shines its
light into the cobalt pool, casting splintered rays across the
water.

A
spring and thunk from the tall diving board, then somehow, water
explodes into the air. The sound ebbs and flows with movement.

But
if no human ear is present to hear it, no eye to see it, can these
things be real? Or are they merely tricks of light and sound, magic
courtesy of Mother Nature?

Soft
golden lamps flicker to life. And then, music, faint but
unmistakable, rises and echoes. Eddie Cantor. If You Knew Susie Like
I Know Susie.

Laughter.
The sounds of a party, of voices, of champagne glasses
clinking.

Then
something white and serpentine slithers and stirs beneath the water
like glistening cold silk, there and gone again in an instant.

Tagline: Loving a god has its advantages

Book Description:

Lleu, the radiant sun god,
crosses between worlds to the Silures village for the fierce and stunning
druidess, Wendolyn —a woman worth battling for. He longs to celebrate Lughnasa,
the festival that honors him, with her.

Wendolyn is captivated by the
striking stranger the moment he wanders into her village. Furthermore, she
wants him with a fervor, burning her from within. However, he’s hiding his true
identity. When he vows to save her tribe from the Romans marching toward them,
everyone, including her dead father in a dream, says he is a coward who has run
off.

Lleu is determined to win the
love of druidess Wendolyn even if it means fighting the Roman army singled
handed—by shapeshifting into in his lynx body.

Will her tribe survive the
Romans? And, can Wendolyn and Lleu’s relationship survive her tribe’s mistrust
of him?

Amazon          Universal

Excerpt:

With her heart hammering,
Wyndolen stared with wonder at Lleu’s luscious nude body. She only glanced away
long enough to pull a white robe, speckled with gold, out of the chest in the
corner. She tugged it on, then fastened a plaid cloak over it with a round
silver broach and latched her gaze onto Lleu again while he slipped his clothes
back on.
They left the
roundhouse and walked hand in hand to Cynfor’s home.
She called out
to the woodmaker, “It is time.”
Cynfor stepped out, clutching an iron rod and
the wheel of the year coated with gooey tar.
As the three walked together to the center of the village, men, women,
and children gathered around the druidess, muttering, “Lleu,” and “coward.”
Scanning the
angry faces in the crowd, Wyndolen sighed. If only they knew the truth about
him. But she couldn’t blame them, she was as guilty as they were. She hadn’t
recognized he was a god, even after he’d told her. No, he had to show her his
magic spear and reveal his dazzling aura. Now the others needed to learn the
truth.  Tonight, at his festival, she
would announce who he really was. But first she had to prepare her tribesmen
for the news, to lessen their shock.
She held her
palm upward toward the crowd and cleared her throat. “Hear me, I have a
surprise for all of you. The presence of the god Lleu is here. You do not see
him as he is in the guise of one of us. So, take care of how you treat each
other, lest you offend the deity.”
Their
expressions shifted from anger to shame as they were now all on their best
behavior.
Taking graceful
steps, she led all her tribesmen, chief, and Lleu to a cliff. Their chief
proudly carried a blazing firebrand, and Cynfor held the sacred wheel with
reverent hands. Everyone grew quiet and gazed down the mountain slope.
Wyndolen
announced, “We have gathered this Lughnasa to observe the Wheel of the Year as
it turns.” She raised her arms to the sky and smiled at Lleu as she chanted,
“The sun burns, yet winter nears. The season turns. Summer comes to an end. Sun
and earth, life to death the wheel turns, Lughnasa, Lughnasa.”
She took the
torqueh from Corio, handed it to Lleu, and he lit the wheel of year aflame.
Cynfor handed Wyndolen the iron rod. Then, the sun god, Lleu, ran beside her,
on the other side of the flaming wheel, as she used the rod to roll it down
that part of the mountain slope.
She chanted,
“God of the sun, the wheel has turned, the yearly end of your reign has come.”
Smoke rose, as
flames ate the wood. The wheel reached its end at the foot of the slope and
crumbled into ash and burning fragments. The crowd stopped in their tracks and
circled the symbol of the dying Lleu.

Interview with Cornelia Amiri

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
One time I felt my characters were hijacking the story a bit. But I was wrong. Except for The Warrior and the Druidess, the characters in my books usually made some type of anti-war statement even though they had to fight for their land and their people. So, I was shocked at how both the hero and heroine of that story wanted to kill Romans and had no second thoughts on taking their lives at all. So, I went back to their character charts to try to find out why they were acting like this. Per two generations, tribes associated with the heroine (her mother’s tribe and her father’s) were annihilated by the Romans. And the hero was the son of a Pict chief who even as a boy had been to protect the land and their way of life from the Romans and to never back down when he knew he was right. And he knew Rome’s invasion was wrong. So, the characters were just doing what I wrote them to do. The character chart was working. Anyone in their situation would want to kill Romans. So, once I realized that, I left them alone.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
It’s the fifth book in the Druidry and Beast series and god Gwydion and druidess Seren, who are the main characters in book one, The Wolf and the Druidess, are in this one too. So, it wraps up the series well. In other words, if you read the other four books, you’ll be missing out by not reading this one. Also, the book lets you totally escape the pandemic and other modern-day issues by whisking you away to the adventurous, mystic world of the ancient British Celts. Also, it’s different than a lot of shapeshifter books as the shapeshifter is a god, plus many readers enjoy the change of reading a shapeshifter book about something other than a wolf or a bear.
Have you written any other books that are not published?
All my books are published except the one I’m currently writing. I think anyone who likes this book would like the other books in the series and would also like my Dancing Vampire series.
Pen or typewriter or computer?
I write on the computer. I’m a fast typist and worked in clerical jobs most of my life, so I am most comfortable with a keyboard.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I truly appreciate the interest you show in my books so much. It warms my heart to know that with so many options available to you that my books are among those you chose to read. I try to create characters that will feel like close friends to you. I also aim to offer you a bit of an escape, a bit of adventure, a little romance, and to lift your spirits with a happy ending.
