Is the risk always worth the reward?

Lennox ‘Leni’ Ford was always a rule follower.
But obeying the rules has never led her to happiness. So, Leni listens to her
heart. And though that’s left her feeling alone and rejected by her family, it
doesn’t stop Leni from continuing to dive in head first. Even when she knows
she may end up hurt.

Holden Locke is a brilliant man who’s always
relied on logic to steer him in the right direction. But his good sense flew
out the window the moment he saw Leni standing outside her torched yoga studio.
Now he’s got a choice to make. Listen to reason and stay away or surrender to
his feelings and take a risk.

Before he can stop it, Holden finds himself
submitting to Leni’s allure. And it isn’t long before the pair are wrapped up
in each other. But the faster Leni falls, the harder Holden pulls away.

And as Holden wages an internal battle with
his emotions, neither of them realizes that Leni’s gearing up for the fight of
her life.

It's not against any formal rule for us to sleep together.

It is, however, strictly forbidden to have feelings for each other.

disintegrating and reformulating to meet whatever needs its masters demand.

Just like Kina.

Except everything is different now that we know who we really are.

But there’s a second reality, you see.

Excerpt

Every
breath makes my breasts push out, the air moving down and up, his hands sliding
from my shoulders to my elbows, wrapping me in an embrace from behind as he
nuzzles my neck, his deep inhale and sigh of pleasure a low rasp, the sound of
a man in deep need.

It's a
sound I crave. Knowing I make Callum's throat react with that rumble is a
victory.

His hands
move to my hips, then lower. Mouth on my ear, he whispers “Here,” as he slips
the jammer into my front pocket. “Cameras.” I slowly turn to face him, pressed
against his body as I slide the band over my wrist.

My pulse
pounds everywhere–the crook of my elbows, my temples, in my eyeballs, at the
center of my tongue–but it beats hardest between my legs, the rush of desire
more overpowering than I'd ever imagined. In all our training, we were taught
that sex is a weapon. Desire is used to manipulate. Atavistic impulses are a
biological imperative to use against another person in order to gain the upper
hand.

They never
told us it could feel so damn good, though.

Spinning me
around, his mouth crushes mine, fingers digging into my hair, palms cupping the
back of my neck, his body grinding into mine. I didn't come here for sex, but I
have a feeling I'm not leaving without it.

I'm not
sure I could leave without it, at this point.

I scanned
the crowd. Apparently, kink didn’t scare off the young, elite, and rich. The
usual crowd I’d see at China White were all here trying too hard not to look
desperately bored. Through the crowd, I spotted a flashbulb go off, and I
stiffened.
Calm
down, mate.
Of
course, the club had hired photographers for the event. But I eyed the
shutterbug again. Slight build. Dirty blond hair gelled up into spikes. I could
have sworn I’d seen him before. The hairs on the back of my neck stood at
attention, but I couldn’t place the guy. I needed to calm down. The hiring
staff would only hire reputable photographers. They knew that we required the
utmost privacy, and they wouldn’t hire anyone who had ever worked with the
tabloids. But still, I couldn’t shake the feeling I’d seen the guy before.
Maybe he was one of Xander’s students?
“Speaking
of complications…” I muttered. I couldn’t have missed Abbie’s entrance with her
friends if I’d been trying.
Sophie
squealed when she spotted me, and immediately a flock of women swarmed the
models. One of the guys put his arm around Abbie, and I had the irrational urge
to plant my fist in his face.
She’d
texted earlier to say she was going out, but I had no idea she’d end up here.
As always,
she looked stunning. She’d worn her braids piled on top of her head in some
kind of bun, with long dangling earrings showing off her slender neck.
Gemma
glanced toward the entrance. “Given the electric sparks between you two across
a room, I see why the urgency.”
“Leave it,
Gem.”
“Just
saying. Give me a couple of weeks before you two get cited for public eye
shagging.” She gathered up her purse. “I think I’ll go see what Nick’s up to.”
I didn’t
even see which way she went because my attention was so focused on Abbie. And
as if she felt my eyes on her, she immediately looked up.
When our
gazes locked, need chased the elation through my veins. I’d only seen her
yesterday, but any time I spent away from her felt like eons. But it wasn’t
like I could really complain. She’d had work to do for my brother. I tried not
to think about what Xander had said about her. It didn’t matter what Xander thought.
I couldn’t stop seeing her.
She climbed
the stairs, her soft skirt swishing against her legs as she did. When she
reached the landing, she fixed me with a smile. “Fancy meeting you here.” She
looked around surreptitiously. “In a sex club.”
“Oh, is it
a sex club? I hadn’t noticed.” I grinned. “Nick’s idea.”
“Ahh, he
didn’t really strike me as the whips-and-chains kind of guy.” She shrugged.
For several
moments, we stood facing each other, neither moving, forcing anyone who wanted
access to the stairs to go around us. Finally, I angled my body a little closer
to her and said, “It’s one of his dad’s clubs. Do you want to go somewhere a
little more private… to talk?”
Her eyes
flashed. “Yeah.” She cleared her throat. “Talking seems like a really good
idea, actually.”
I took her
hand and led her through the throngs of the VIP section, past the dominatrix
with her victim for the night, and past the sex viewing rooms. She held on
tight to me as we passed by them.
“Are they
having…”
“Yeah.” As
much as I wanted to be with her, I hated having her here in the midst of all
the kink that was going on. “Maybe we should leave the club?”
“I—No. It’s
okay. We came as a group for Jasper’s gig tonight. Apparently, there’s some big
promoter here. Jasper’s hoping to get some representation tonight. We’re sort
of supporting him. Everyone would notice if I left.”
“Right.” Jasper.
Jasper might be my friend, but jealousy ate at me. I wanted her there to
support me. Of course, I’d have to tell her something real about myself first.
I found the private rooms, then after looking around to make sure no one paid
us any attention, I dragged her inside. Dim red light illuminated the
comfortable-looking couch and bed. Her eyes widened as she glanced around.
“This is… cozy.”
I kissed
her softly, and for a moment, all the tension ebbed out of my body. “I just
wanted to be alone with you for two minutes before things get crazy out there
and we don’t have a minute to talk all night.”
“No. It’s
fine.” She placed a hand on my chest, and my heart hammered. “I’d rather get a
minute with you, even if it’s in a sex room. I wanted to talk to you about
something.”
We’d spent
a lot of time together over the last week, but we hadn’t been alone.
Always out in public. Even the photo lab had been occupied when I’d gone to
help her. The one night we’d made a date for her to go to my place, she’d had
to do some schoolwork for Xander and rescheduled. The prick of guilt stung as I
thought of how badly her last critique had gone.
“Okay,
talk.” I kissed the crook of her neck and inhaled. Her perfume, mixed with her
unique scent, drove me a little crazy and made my head swim.
“Alexi, I
can’t—” She moaned when I licked her. “I can’t think when you’re doing that.”
“Okay,
sorry.” I drew back. “Sometimes I forget to slow down.”
She blinked
up at me and inhaled deeply. “Sometimes I don’t want you to.”
I stilled. What?
“I don’t understand.”
“Have you
noticed that even after we said we’d ease up on intensity we’ve been spending
every minute we can together?”
Something
ominous and slimy squirmed in my gut. “I thought that was a good thing.”
“It is.
Maybe we don’t need to take it quite so slow anymore.”
Relief
washed over me like a wave. As did panic. I was totally fucked. I was
completely in love with her. And there were things she still didn’t know about
me.

Christianity in the Americas Before Columbus by Gary Bowen

Who was Fray (“Friar”) Servando Teresa de Mier? What did he do and what did he write? Fray Mier born 1763 in Monterrey, Mexico, died 1827 as a guest in Mexico’s Presidential Palace. He came to be the most popular man in Mexico. Two centuries later Fray Mier is unknown even in his native Mexico. Why and how did this happen? The life and writings of Fray Mier is a “Mier Paradox” described in Christianity in the Americas Before Columbus: Unfamiliar Origins and Insights. Dr. Mier’s writings give Unfamiliar Origins and Insights to the history of Mexico before and after Columbus. Mier writing: “And, who does not know of the blasphemies of the incredulous against the Christian religion, whose Divinity, they say, was testing them for sixteen centuries, up to crushing their bones, with its expansion into all the world by only twelve men, and with the universality of the Church; and in the end a New World was discovered where nothing was known of it? It is false. Throughout America, monuments and vestige evidences of Christianity were found, according to the unanimous testimony of the missionaries.”

Those early Catholic missionaries were the source of Fray Mier’s research and writings. Mier wrote his “Farewell Letter to the Mexicans,” 1820, while incarcerated in San Juan de Ullúa Fort. Mier’s “Farewell Letter. . .,” has this closing mandate: “My fellow countrymen stop howling and instruct yourselves. . . The Deists themselves today confess that the ancient preaching of the Gospel in America is beyond doubt.”  Pursuant to Fray Mier’s mandate to his Mexican countrymen, we too must instruct ourselves on those early Catholic missionaries’ writings, which give historical authenticity to the ancient preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Americas.

Lauren C. Sergeant is a poet, a founding contributor for the Auburn-Opelika Moms Blog, a writer, and the author of Light of Distant Suns, the first book in the Children of the Glaring Dawn series. She lives in Opelika, Alabama with her beloved husband and dear son, though she grew up in Southern California and never imagined calling the American South home.

It seems the unanticipated things in life are sometimes the most delightful, though.

Body Farm Z by Deborah Sheldon

Body Farm Z
by Deborah Sheldon
Genre: Horror

To solve murders, you must understand the process of decomposition.
Australia’s newest body farm, the Victorian Taphonomic Experimental Research
Institute, is hidden in bushland some four hours’ drive from Melbourne.
Scattered across its 150 acres are human donor cadavers and pig carcasses
arranged to mimic some of the ways in which police might find murder victims:
exposed to the elements, buried in a shallow grave, wrapped in tarpaulin.
Forensic scientists and graduate students meticulously track each stage of
putrefaction. Today, Detective Rick Evans of the Homicide Squad is at VITERI
for the re-creation of one of his cold cases. A human donor will be locked
inside a car. But the donor has other ideas... So begins a facility-wide
outbreak of the reanimated dead.
