Hopey chronicles the story of a courageous girl in a '70s Southern Indiana commune, complete with flowers for dinner, a ball of acid in the freezer, and orgies on the living room floor. The chaos of her formative years, which are littered with violent episodes, periods of hunger and assaults, leads Hope to set off on her own at the age of fifteen.

Written as intense past moments, reflective chapters, and flash-forwards, these three voices come together to transcend time and connect the past and the present. Honest and raw, with no request for empathy or complaint, the book is a celebration of the human spirit and an exhilarating read. Hopey is a reminder that we can love, we can believe, and we, too, can be successful beyond all expectations—if we only dare to hope.

Alice, a Memoir by Alice Gilmore

Alice, a Memoir
by Alice Gilmore

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Non-fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Few, if anyone, could have had a life like Alice Gilmore. It was almost unbelievable yet carried on under the cover of a respectable middle-class existence.

You might strongly disapprove of what she did, but Alice was determined. She overcame insurmountable obstacles to keep the love she longed for.

Her single-minded fight to live out her love makes a gripping, riveting story that one eminent literary person called ‘staggeringly readable’. It is shocking. Her methods will upset some, but are you with her or against her? Your decision.

This is no misery memoir. It’s a story told with joy, wit and fervour – the astonishing story of the overwhelming love Alice Gilmour was determined to live out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
The taxi took me to the student pub at the university. I went in and found a seat at the end of the bar where I could have my back to the wall and watch what went on without it being obvious that I was doing just that. In fact I sat side on to the wall, using the mirrors behind the bar. The place was quite quiet when I sat down but soon filled up. It was the favourite drinking haunt of most students because the beer was very cheap and they could take a good deal on board before going on to a disco or meal later. I looked like someone waiting for her date to turn up, except that I hadn’t realized just how much I stood out in that crowd of untidy garish youngsters. I looked infinitely more sophisticated and quite a bit older. If someone had come up to me and asked me what the hell I was doing in a joint like this I wouldn’t have been surprised. I soon spotted my prey, a six-foot, fair-haired athletic-looking boy in trainers, jeans and tee shirt. He was not nineteen, I knew, a first-year student. I wanted him as young as possible. David had researched him thoroughly, almost intrusively, and probably illegally: brilliant A levels, excellent entrance papers, a keen and talented sportsman, no known allergies or poor family health history, good looking and popular. I wanted the father of our child to be as perfect as possible.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
If you want to know about my life and background read this book. I can scarcely add to what I have written about myself in there. I earnestly hope that the rest of my life is too uneventful to even consider writing anything else, I am no novelist. The life I have described was full enough and rich enough for me. God knows what I would come out with if I had to invent. If you find you need a good chef I shall consider anything not too energetic – which rules out most jobs in the kitchen.
Interview with Alice Gilmore
What is the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
If we are talking about major things in my life then it is the person I call Geoff in my memoir forgiving me for what I did to him.
How would you spend ten thousand bucks?
I would put it in my bank account and just let it get used as and when. I have led a fairly sheltered life regarding money and never found that I needed money for something special and didn’t have it. If I had needed money I would have gone out and got it somehow. Perhaps my financial needs are modest. I think so but that’s easy to say when you have never wanted.
Where do you get your best ideas?
I am always watching those about me and find them endlessly diverting. When I let my imagination roam with what I think is the character of someone I have seen or come into contact with ideas present themselves pretty freely. However, I think the important thing if you want to write is to have a theme. Find something you want to talk about or find you have a view on or want to support or sell (I don’t mean literally).
What comes first, the plot or characters?
Well, if you follow what I’ve just said in answer to the preceding question. Once you’ve got a theme (not the same as a plot) a plot must follow that serves that theme and as you think of that characters grow and multiply.
What does your main character do that makes him/her special.
Ha ha, I cannot possibly answer that without blowing my book. Others will do that for me. But if you start to read my memoir you will have the answer in a few pages. Whether you want to go on with her from there is a matter of choice. I can only assure you it is very, very, very unusual. Perhaps unique.
Someone who never worries about the future.
