  • Hurricane — Lisa Loeb
This song has a spooky, creepy vibe to it that has always made me think of Marianne, the primary antagonist of Haven Lost. Oh yes, she's a hurricane.
  • Harmony — Elton John
"Harmony and me
"We're pretty good company
"Looking for an island
"In our boat upon the sea"

This song played incessantly in my brain while writing Harmony's Song, the prequel novella to The Dragon's Brood Cycle (also available from Audible.) Apart from always being one of my favorite Elton John tunes, it inspired the title character's name in a round about way.

When I first sat down to write Harmony's Song, the character who would become Harmony was named Shanna in early drafts. One day, I took a break from writing to listen to NPR's Ask Me Another (a geeky puzzle and trivia gameshow.) One of the contestants that day was named Harmony, after the Elton John song, and inspiration struck like lightning out of a clear blue sky. Harmony was the perfect name for the character, and I immediately set out making the changes throughout the story. Sometimes, life just hands you a gift.
  • Seasons — Heart
This is actually another Elton John song, but as performed by Heart. In many ways, the song captures the relationship between Daniel and Harmony in Harmony's Song. It was also used in one of my favorite TV series of all time, The Wonder Years, in much the same way as it feels appropriate to the novella. I can't hear the song, performed either by Elton John or Heart, without thinking of Kevin and Winnie, or now—Daniel and Harmony.
  • Hunter — Dido
This is just a great song which puts me in mind of the start of the next leg of Emily's journey in Haven Divided, the second volume of the series.
  • Heal the Pain — George Michael
George Michael has been my favorite music artist for over thirty years, and his music is always the backdrop to everything I do and every significant moment of my life. Heal the Pain feels somewhat appropriate to Casey and Jeff's relationship in volume 2.
  • Shape of My Heart — Sting
This song was very much in my head while writing a pivotal scene between the sinister Jack and Casey in Haven Divided. "Spades are the swords of a soldier…"
  • Be Still — Celtic Woman
The Dragon's Brood Cycle draws heavily from many themes in British, Irish, and Scottish mythologies, among others, and what better way to represent that than some love for the Celts!

Top 10 List
Josh de Lioncourt's Top Ten Fantasy Series
Choosing my top ten fantasy novels is challenging. First, I've probably read thousands of them throughout my life. Second, many of my favorites are series, which means you could rapidly fill up a top ten list with a series or two. Third, what exactly constitutes "fantasy"? Everyone seems to have a different definition. Some people include only Sword and Sorcery novels, ignoring all of fantasy's many sub-genres.

For the purposes of this list, therefore, I have followed these rules:
  • Series are lumped together as a single entry.
  • My definition of "fantasy" encompasses all its many permutations.
  • This list comprises my top ten as of the day I'm writing it and can change at any time based on my mood, memory, or whim.
So, without further delay, here are my personal top ten favorite fantasy novels (mostly series).

10 -- Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin

9 -- Halfmoon Hollow (series) by Molly Harper

8 -- Shades of Gray by Jasper Fforde

7 -- The Legend of Eli Monpress (series) by Rachel Aaron

6 -- Heartstrikers (series) by Rachel Aaron

5 -- Lives of the Mayfair Witches (series) by Anne Rice

4 -- Super Powereds (series) by Drew Hayes

3 -- Harry Potter (series) by J. K. Rowling

2 -- The Vampire Chronicles (series) by Anne Rice

1 -- The Dark Tower (series) by Stephen King

P.S. Yes, I cheated a bit with my number one. The Dark Tower series effectively encompasses virtually everything Stephen King has ever written. I'm okay with that!

Guest Post
Literary Inspirations: Midnight Royalty
I read a lot, and while inspiration in my fiction comes from far more sources than just literature, it is worth examining who has shaped my writing the most. There are two authors who have influenced my style of writing more than any others.

First and foremost is Stephen King, the master storyteller himself. King is best known for his horror, at least in the public consciousness, but horror constitutes only a small portion of his catalog. As a fantasy fan, his The Dark Tower saga has been a massive influence on my writing. Stylistically, I've taken much of his advice in his memoir On Writing to heart, and that book has served as a kind of literary handbook for me.

More than any other author, there is a realism to King's work that transcends the (generally) supernatural situations, environments, and characters he dreams up, and I consider that realism to be crucial in my own work. I've been reading his books since I was around twelve-years-old, and it is safe to say that without his body of work, I would not be writing today.

Second only to Stephen King is Anne Rice, whose magical worlds of witches and vampires are so richly described that you feel like you're standing on the streets of nineteenth century New Orleans, eighteenth century France, or seventeenth century Scotland. She can place you at the heart of the Roman empire or Edwardian England, and by the time you come up for air, you feel like you've lived through that era.

When I write, I want to envelope the reader in the world I'm creating. I don't want them to just see it as I do; I want them to feel the wind blow through their hair, hear the crunch of autumn leaves beneath their boots, smell the smoke of a raging blaze, or taste the fragment of sweet cake scavenged by a street urchin. It was Rice who taught me how to do these things, and much more.

There are so many other authors who have contributed odds and ends to my writing arsenal—J.K. Rowling, Rachel Aaron, Harry Harrison, Terry Brooks, and a thousand others. But none have had a greater impact than the king and queen of darkness.

SNEAK PEEKS:

At the Edge of Dreams

by Angela Brimhall

(Steampunk)

Aurora pressed her back against the clock tower wall, clutching the stolen scroll to her chest. The whine of clicking machinery from the surrounding buildings tapped like a metronome in her head, beating out the rhythmic heartbeat of The Briar. She squeezed her eyes shut listening for the signal she’d been detected. But nothing came. Aurora’s chest fluttered when she peeked around the corner to Main Street.

Steam hissed from arterial pipes and veiny downspouts protruding from faceless citadels. Aurora searched through shadows for yellow-orange eyes. Mist clouded the alleyways wedged between the buildings, cloaking any Huntsman hiding from view, but she couldn’t see any patrolling the street.

Aurora didn’t hesitate. She bounded away from behind the wall and ran, not looking back. Alarms blared as she passed the city limits and met the lip of Spindlewood Forest.

They know.

Her thighs burned. Puffs of strained breath came in uncontrolled spurts, but the dissonant sound drove Aurora harder. She crashed through the threshold of trees and fought her way up the steep hill into the woodland’s heart.

Aurora pulled herself over the summit and crawled to the nearest bush, wheezing through pursed lips, clutching the stitch in her side. A twig snapped. The sound rode on a whisper of dank smoky air from the grove of trees two feet away.

Something was close.

The hair on Aurora’s neck rose, and she narrowed her eyes, peeking around the shrub. She gripped her piecemeal knife in one shaking hand, the scroll in the other, waiting for the metal minion to show himself.

Where are you?

Several cracks echoed in different directions around her. Blood rushed from Aurora’s face into her stomach. She whipped around, her head darting every which way, ears perked. Aurora crouched, knife out, ready to jab anything that came close.

I’m surrounded.

A skeletal metal face peered at Aurora from behind a large tree trunk five feet in front of her. It’s lifeless eyes twisted and whirred, yellow pupils fixating on her location. Aurora froze. The Huntsman stepped out from behind the tree and brandished a long bronze pistol.

Dragon’s Curse

by Adrienne Monson

(Paranormal Romance)

I was going to explode. A restless energy had been building inside me for months now. There were times when it felt like my skin was the only thing keeping me from flying apart. There was no good reason for it. Frustration continued to grow and everything I’d done to ignore it and tamp it down seemed to only feed the impotent ire simmering beneath the surface.

When my coworker, Ben, had asked me out for the third time tonight, I’d lost it. I mean, yelled and came pretty close to slapping him. While he may have been annoying, he hadn’t deserved my freak out.

My phone played Sound of Silence to let me know it was ringing. All I wanted was to take a shower and wash the smell of coffee and baked goods off, but when I saw it was Nana, I answered. “Hey.” I put the speaker on so I could grab some water while I spoke. I tossed my keys on the counter and placed my phone next to them.

“What’s wrong?” Her confident voice flitted through my tiny apartment as if she were in the room.

My shoulders tensed and my defenses kicked in. “Why does something have to be wrong?”

“It’s in your tone. I can tell. What are you so mad about?”

That was the question I’d been asking myself for weeks. I glared at the phone as I drank. The cold water felt nice on my throat, but it was not enough to calm me.

“Dawn?” Nana called, her voice louder. “Don’t you give me that look.”

Rolling my eyes, I huffed. “You can’t see my face. You have no idea what look I may or may not be giving you.”

“I know you. You’re glaring a hot laser at the phone right now.”

It was all too easy to imagine her grey eyes meeting mine in challenge, never backing down. I’d bet anything she was folding her arms across her chest and that her lips were pulled into a stubborn line. “It’s a boy, isn’t it?” she asked.

Grinding my teeth, I picked the phone up from the counter and headed to the bathroom. “I don’t date, Nana. Why would you think it’s a boy?”

“What happened?” Her tone had softened and the concern I heard broke through the barrier I’d had up all evening.

My shoulders slumped and I put the phone down again to pull my long, blonde hair out of its ponytail. Nana didn’t say anything. She always knew when to wait. “Ben asked me out again,” I finally admitted.

“Why do you say that like it’s a horrible thing?”

I was positive that her brows were drawn together and that her thin lips were pulled down into a frown that showcased little wrinkles. It’s how she always looked when we approached this topic.

An image of a man with brown hair and brown skin entered my mind. He wasn’t real – just a man from my dreams that no one knew about. I couldn’t tell Nana he was the reason.

Excerpt:
“But you definitely must try harder to act like you’re seducing me,” she said. “I’m not feeling the slightest bit breathless or weak in the knees or whatever it is girls feel when they’re being swept off their feet.”
“My apologies,” he murmured. Then he dropped the reins and turned to her, intent on giving her a taste of her own medicine. “Let’s fix that immediately.”
“You don’t have to do it right now—”
He gave her his wolfish smile. Then he leaned in close to whisper in her ear, but words failed him for a second. She smelled good. It was that heady fragrance. And her skin was smooth and dewy and just lovely. Hers was a complexion that begged to be caressed. That was just the skin politely exposed; he idly wondered about the rest of her . . .
Finally, he remembered what he meant to say. Something romantic and seductive. Two could play at this game of irritating each other profoundly.
“What do you say we return to that gazebo and see if it’s empty so we can be alone?”
“To do what, exactly?”
“Get to know each other better. Intimately.”
Had they been alone he might have kissed her earlobe. Desire flared when the thought occurred to him.
Thank God they were not alone.

As I double-check the supplies in the medical centre, I tell myself for what has to be at least the ninety-seventh time in the past two hours that this will be good experience and look impressive on my résumé. At twenty-one, I’m in my last year as a paramedical science student; then there’s just two years on-the-job training. If I will indeed be a paramedic, I need to get used to thinking on my feet, working in unfamiliar places and in situations I may not know a lot about. Volunteering at the National Racing Series ticks all of those boxes, even if I think the event is nothing more than an excuse for man-children to strut around and try to figure out who has the biggest… engine.
Motorbike racing is dangerous and frankly unnecessary. All racing is. What does it prove? That the winner can go round a track the fastest? Whoop de doo.
It’s good experience, Mase, I remind myself.
It might be, I reply, but it’s still idiotic.
Great, now I’m talking to myself.
“I told you, Pop, I’m fine,” someone says just outside the doors.
“And Reed is fine trying to take on that nutcase Hunter David,” someone—Pop, I presume—replies. “Just get your arse in there.”
A second later, a guy—he can’t be over eighteen—struts through the door. I say strut because that’s what he does. He has the build all the riders do. Not tall, I’m going for about five nine-ish, slim but strong, solid but not overly so, slightly bow-legged, with longish dark brown hair, deep brown eyes, and a smirk on his face. If I’d seen him on the street, he’s definitely someone I’d give a second glance to. That face…. But meeting him here, knowing what he does? No, thank you.
“Can I help you?” I ask.
“Yeah, my pop wants me to get checked out even though I told him I’m fine,” he says. He’s cradling his right hand, and although he clearly doesn’t want to show it, the edges of his smirk pull slightly.
“Are you in pain?” I ask, stepping forward and grabbing his gloved hand.
“Nah.”
I give him my best no-nonsense look. “If you’re in pain, I need you to tell me. Check all that macho he-man shit at the door, all right? Pain is the body’s way of letting us know something isn’t right.”
He hisses as I gently pull off his glove.
“Yeah, not so tough now, are we?” I know I shouldn’t have said that, but I can’t help myself. These guys, they act like they’re doing the world a favour, going round on their bikes at frankly ridiculous speeds.
“Screw you, man,” he says, pulling his hand out of mine. “I came here for help, even though I didn’t want it and I certainly don’t need it.”
“Is that right?”
“Yeah, it is.” He hitches his chin.
“Bend that finger, then.” I motion to his clearly broken index finger. “You can’t, can you?” I ask as he struggles to do it. “That’s because it’s broken. It’s going to need surgery and a pin inserted to stabilise it.”
“Look, buttercup,” he says, “I don’t have time for this. Give me a jab for the pain and strap my fingers together. I’ve got a bike to ride.”
I shake my head and cross my arms. “I don’t think so. There’s no way I’m declaring you fit to race, not with an injury like that.”
I glare at him, and he at me, neither of us willing to back down.
“Ah, excuse me?”
Although it kills me to, I break the staring competition and turn my attention to the guy who came in with arseface here.
