Little Girls Sleeping: by Jennifer Chase

LITTLE GIRLS SLEEPING by Jennifer Chase, Crime Thriller

Title: Little Girls Sleeping: An Absolutely Gripping Crime Thriller (Detective Katie Scott Book 1)

Author: Jennifer Chase

Publisher: Bookouture

Pages: 377

Genre: Thriller/Crime

He looked down at the little girl, sleeping peacefully, her
arms wrapped around a teddy bear. He knew he was the only one who could
save her. He could let her sleep forever.

An eight-year-old girl, Chelsea Compton, is missing in Pine Valley, California and for Detective Katie Scott
it’s a cruel reminder of the friend who disappeared from summer camp
twenty years ago. Unable to shake the memories, Katie vows she won’t
rest until she discovers what happened to Chelsea.

But as Katie starts to investigate, the case reveals itself to be
much bigger and more shocking than she feared. Hidden deep in the forest
she unearths a makeshift cemetery: a row of graves, each with a
brightly coloured teddy bear.

Katie links the graves to a stack of missing-persons cases involving
young girls—finding a pattern no one else has managed to see. Someone in
Pine Valley has been taking the town’s daughters for years, and Katie
is the only one who can stop them.

And then another little girl goes missing, snatched from the park near her home.

Katie’s still haunted by the friend she failed to protect, and she’ll
do anything to stop the killer striking again—but can she find the
little girl before it’s too late?

Compulsive and gripping crime fiction for fans of Lisa Regan,
Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh. Katie Scott’s first case will have you
on the edge of your seat and gasping with shock.

The oversized tires
obliterated the rural roadway before the large truck came to an abrupt stop.
The driver stalled the engine. Dust rose in a curious flowering cloud, swirling
in front of the vehicle’s hood and creeping toward the back of the camper
shell. When the surrounding vicinity finally cleared, a dense forest landscape
emerged.
The truck overlooked the sheer
cliff and rugged scenery that had become a permanent roadblock. The usual
silence of the deserted region was interrupted by the incessant and rhythmic
sound of a cooling engine.
Tick… Tick… Tick…
The vehicle remained parked.
No one moved inside the cab or got out. The truck stayed immobile as if an
unlikely statue in the vast wilderness—a distinct contrast between nature and
manufactured steel.
The truck sat at the ideal
vantage spot, which was both mesmerizing and terrifying for any spectator; but
still the occupant chose to wait. The intense high beams pierced ahead into the
picturesque hills, leaving a hazy view of the area above the massed trees.
When the driver’s door finally
opened, a man stepped out, his steel-toed leather work boots hitting the dirt.
They were well-worn, reflecting the many miles he had walked and the many hours
he had labored. Swiftly the door shut as the man, medium build and wearing only
a plain dark T-shirt, walked to the back of the truck and, with a loud bang,
released the lift gate. He moved with purpose and with a calm assertiveness, as
if he had performed this particular task many times before. His weathered
hands, calloused from years of working with heavy tools and machinery without
the protection of leather gloves, had a certain agility and speed.
He grasped two well-used
shovels, a large arching pick, and a bulky utility garbage bag. As he tossed
the bag onto the ground, the top burst open and several medium-sized teddy
bears spilled out. Their smiling faces accentuated the brightly colored ribbons
tied around their necks, contrasting with the muted shades of their
surroundings.
The man pushed the floppy bag
aside with the toe of his boot. He worked in quiet solitude, no humming, no
whistling, and no talk.
He flipped on the flashlight
fixed to his baseball cap. Straight ahead and slightly arced, the large beam
illuminated his path while he strode steadily toward a particular wooded area.
The surrounding thickets and
trees remained still without any wind to rustle the leaves. The only audible
sound was the man’s quick footsteps—never with any hesitation. He walked with
the gait of a young man, despite his stature of someone older.
He hesitated as if he had
forgotten something, standing motionless with his arms down at his sides and
his head hung forward as he shone the bright light at the ground and the tops
of his boots. He still held firmly to the tools. He mumbled a few inaudible
sentences of a memorized prayer, which sounded more like a warning than a
passage from the Bible, then he raised his head and continued to walk into the
dense forest.
Dropping his tools, he
carefully pushed a pine branch aside and secured it with a worn piece of rope
that had been left for the purpose. An opening was exposed—a tunnel barely
large enough for a man to enter.
He grabbed his digging tools
once again and proceeded. The flashlight on the front of his cap brightened the
passageway as it veered to the right. He followed, only ducking his head twice
before the path opened to an area with several boulders sticking out of the
cliff. Clusters of unusual rock shapes, some sharp, some rounded, made the
terrain appear more like a movie set or backdrop.
A narrow dirt path of crude,
sloping man-made steps dropped fifteen feet to a landing jutting out from the
rock formation. A small yellow flag was stuck into the earth, marking a spot. A
slight evening breeze picked up, causing the flag to flutter.
The man balanced the shovels
and pick against the hillside and pulled a hunting knife from a sheath attached
to his belt. Pressing the bone handle tight against his palm, he drew the blade
through the packed dirt to mark a rectangular pattern on the ground.
He stared intently at the
soil, then retrieved the pick, gripping it tight, and swung it hard against the
dry, heavily compacted earth. It dented the surface, spewing chips of dirt in
every direction. A few small rocks buried in the soil since the beginning of
time hampered his progress, but after several more arced swings, the ground
began to crumble, exposing the fresh earth.
The heavy pick was exchanged
for one of the shovels. Soon there was a small pile of California soil,
comprised of sand, silt, clay, and small rock. The repeated movements of dig,
scoop, and deposit continued for more than forty-five minutes at a brisk pace.
The hard work of manual labor didn’t deter him. It only made him more
determined to create a work of genius—his ultimate masterpiece.

At
last he stepped back and admired his handiwork, perspiring heavily through his
shirt from the effort. Exhilaration filled his body, keeping his muscles flexed
and his heart pumping hard. He leaned against the shovel, a smile forming on
his lips as he waited for his pulse to return to normal, and marveled at the
unmistakable outline of a freshly dug grave.

Great Summer Reads Countdown Blitz Monk's Bride by Caroline Clemmons Day 4

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons
was not born on a Texas ranch. To compensate for this illogical error, she
writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains in a
tiny office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North
Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their three rescued indoor
cats as well as providing nourishment outdoors for squirrels, birds, four feral
cats, a fox, a raccoon, and two possums.

The books she creates in her pink cave have made her an Amazon bestselling
author and won several awards. She writes sweet to sensual romances about the
West, both historical and contemporary as well as time travel and mystery. Her
series include the Kincaids, McClintocks, Stone Mountain Texas, Bride Brigade,
Texas Time Travel, Texas Caprock Tales, Pearson Grove, and Loving A Rancher as
well as numerous single titles and contributions to multi-author sets. When
she’s not writing, she loves spending time with her family, reading her friends’
books, lunching with friends, browsing antique malls, checking Facebook, and
taking the occasional nap.

A destitute widow; a reformed con man;
the danger that links them…

Betsie Galloway Hirsch has escaped
Memphis with her son. Her gambling husband tricked the wrong people and they’re
demanding Betsie pay his debts—or else. She’s come to Kincaid Springs to stay
with her mother and seek a safe place for her son. Being so far from her former
home, she feels secure. That is, until danger confronts her.

After 34 years alone, Michael “Monk”
Magonagle is falling in love with Betsie and is fond of her son. Monk is
certain she is not free of the men her late husband cheated. Although he is not
a violent man by nature, Monk is willing to fight for Betsie’s safety. He and
the men of the Kincaid family prepare to meet the enemy.

How can Betsie and Liam be protected
from the approaching danger? Will she and Monk be able to forge a love that
endures or will one of them be silenced forever? What toll will the enemy exact?

A Gift of Jacinth by Allie McCormack

A Gift of Jacinth
Allie McCormack
(Wishes & Dreams #2)
Publication date: June 4th 2019
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Douglas needed a miracle. What he got was a genie…
A Gift of Jacinth is a charming, playful paranormal romance novel with a happy ever after and no cliffhanger.
Veterinarian Douglas McCandliss considered himself an ordinary kinda guy with an ordinary kinda life. He had no idea why he’d bought the old silver teapot, and when a young woman appeared before him claiming to be a genie, he almost wished he hadn’t. If only she wasn’t so damned cute.
Ebullient and cheerful, Jacinth loved granting wishes and helping people. So she was thrilled when her teapot’s new owner, a single father with custody of two young children, asked her to stay until he could find a nanny. The problem was, the longer she stayed, the more she was attracted to Douglas, and she was certainly not willing to turn over care of Ben and little Molly to just anybody. But she was a 900 year old genie, and had no intention of falling in love with a mortal man. None whatsoever.
Get your copy and plunge into the magic and enchantment of the Djinn world, and experience a charming and unexpected love story.
EXCERPT:
Exchanging a glance with Jacinth, he saw his opinion mirrored in her face. They had two choices. They could find another mode of travel to New York, or carry two screaming, terrified children onto the airplane. Douglas had never considered himself lacking in courage, but his nerves quailed at the graphic image that conjured up.
“Okay, okay, don’t panic,” he told them. “Give me a couple of minutes here and I’ll think of something.”
He moved a few feet away from the car where they all stood, still in the parking lot at the zoo. Jacinth followed, and he lowered his voice to consult with her.
“What am I supposed to do? Dammit, we’re three thousand miles from home! Did Lilian do this on purpose?”
Jacinth gnawed on her lower lip, feeling her brows pull together as she pondered.
“Probably,” she agreed. “I think you’re going to have to rent the car all the way to New York, Douglas.”
His grimace was rueful. “That distressing possibility occurred to me. At least that would be better than taking the bus or the train, which are our only other options. Four days in a car with two young children, though, is my idea of a nightmare. They’re so little, and it’s been so long since we’ve been together, we’re complete strangers to each other. This is definitely not how I’d choose to get to know each other again.”
Jacinth twinkled at him. “You have a nanny,” she reminded him. “And once you’re home, you have your job to go to. This might turn out for the best for both you and the children. By the time we get to New York you’ll have established a rapport with them.
Enthusiasm fired in her, and she felt a burst of excitement. “It’ll be fun, Douglas. We can play car games, and I can read them stories, and we’ll buy some of those children’s sing-along CD’s. We can eat at truck stops and roadside diners along the way, then stop at motels in the afternoon. The children can nap, then we can go to dinner, and maybe swim in the motel pool in the evening. We can buy postcards and a camera and take lots of pictures.”
She watched Douglas hopefully as he thought this over. Driving across America wasn’t something she’d ever have thought of doing, or even wanting to do, but now she was seized with a great longing. Perhaps it was because of the presence of Douglas and the children, having someone to share this great new adventure with.
“It doesn’t sound like such a bad idea, when you put it that way,” Douglas admitted. “Maybe this could work after all.”
Hope sprang up in her breast as another thought occurred to her. “If we’re not going to fly out from here tonight, could we stay one more day and go to Disneyland tomorrow?”
Douglas broke into laughter. “Okay, yes, we’ll go to Disneyland.”
Hearing him, Benny let out a whoop of excitement, and Molly’s eyes shone like stars. Douglas held up a hand for silence.
“But we’re not staying late,” he warned them. “I’m not fighting this kind of traffic on a Monday morning. We’ll leave Disneyland before it gets dark so we’ll be well out of the city before we find a motel for the night. No arguments when I say it’s time to leave. Agreed?”
He noted with amusement that Jacinth joined in with Benny in assuring him that was fine, while Molly nodded her head vigorously, the curly blond bangs flopping in her eyes. She was so adorable, he wanted to scoop her in his arms and hold her tight. His chest constricted, and his eyes stung a little as he looked at his kids. He loved them both so much.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Smashwords / iBooks

EXCERPT:

Rushing out of the media room, I ran through the foyer and up the stairs to Layla’s room. I knocked hard on the door and listened. There was no sound or movement that I could hear. “Layla, open the door.” Still, there was nothing. When I opened the door, her closet was open, and it’d been cleaned out, along with her dresser. “Motherfucker,” I huffed. “Layla!”

The sound of a door slammed downstairs, so I took off out of her room. How the hell could I not see her on the cameras? I ran down the stairs and out the patio door. There were a line of trees blocking my sight of the driveway, but I could see the top edge of one of the open garage doors. As I drew closer, I could see her tossing her luggage in the back of a silver SUV. She’d changed out of her green sundress from earlier into a pair of jeans and a black T-shirt.

“Where do you think you’re going?” I called out as I stepped away from the trees. Layla jerked around, eyes blazing like fire as she grabbed the gun at her waistband and pointed it straight at me. I stopped and held up my hands. “Whoa. What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m leaving. And if you try to stop me, I’ll blow off your balls.”

Glancing down at her gun, I couldn’t help but notice how perfect her stance was. She looked like she knew what she was doing. “I don’t doubt it,” I replied cautiously. “Where’d you get the gun?”

Her eyes narrowed, but she kept the gun pointed at me. “My uncle.”

Still holding my hands in the air, I slowly took a step forward. “Did he teach you how to shoot as well?”

The muscles in her jaw tightened. “Yes. Believe it or not, I’m not the helpless princess everyone thinks I am.”

“I never said you were, Layla.” I nodded at the video camera just above the garage door. “How did you get out here without me seeing you?”

She lifted her chin, her lips tilting up in an evil grin. “You’re not the only one who knows how to manipulate a camera. How else was I supposed to sneak out as a teenager?”

Now I was impressed. “Guess we all have our secrets. Can anyone see us right now?”

She shook her head. “No.” I took another step closer, and her body tensed. “Dammit, Bryce, don’t test me. I already know my father told you to stop me. No matter what he says or what you do, I am going to get out of here.”

“And go where?” I asked. “To the city to find out the answers?”

“If that’s what it takes. I’m not returning until he tells me the truth.”

There was nothing but sheer determination in her eyes. The woman was so goddamned stubborn she’d get herself killed in the process. We were only about six feet apart, with the gun still pointed at my chest. There was only one thing left to do. I wasn’t about to underestimate her.

“What if I told you what you want to know?” I said, hoping she could see the truth in my eyes.

Her lips pursed. “Why should I believe you?”

“Because you said it yourself—you’re not going to stop until you find out the answers. This is the only way to keep you safe.” It was also the way to test her. I had to know how far her loyalty went with her father. It might be what I had to do to finish my mission. Anthony would surely try to come after me, but he’d have a hell of a time trying to find me.

“I won, you
realize that, right?”
“Yes, cocky one,
I do. What’s your point?” she retorts, clearly not realizing where I’m going
with this.
“I won, therefore
you arrived last…”
Realization
flashes across her features and she looks up at me, where I’m still perched
atop Thor, with her hand providing shade over her eyes and her lips slightly
parted. “You can’t be serious. Right now?”
“Mhmm, right
now.” I nod my head and fold my hands over the horn of Thor’s saddle. “I need
to see you gloriously naked and getting into the water.”
“You really are
serious.” She shakes her head and starts to pull her hair back. “You can tell
me you’re joking anytime.”
“Allie, I’m
serious as a heart attack. You agreed, last one here is the first to
skinny-dip. And I want to watch every second of you doing exactly that.”
“My God, you are
so full of yourself. I suppose you’re going to stay there on top of Thor, like
you’re the ruler of the lands?”
My only answer is
to smile at her.
“Impossible.
You’re impossible.” She pulls the band off her wrist and secures her hair into
a messy pile above her head then she works her boots off with a huff. “How am I
supposed to dry off?”
“I brought two
blankets, we can share one so you can use the other to dry yourself.”
“And what are you
going to—you know what—never mind.” She steps up in front of Thor and slides
her hand over his face. “You’re a traitor, Thor. You should’ve lost for me.”
She makes me
laugh loudly. “He knows whose horse he is. Now, quit stalling”

Author Bio

I was born and raised about twenty
minutes north of Denver, Colorado where school and soccer were always my
primary focus growing up. Though, I read and wrote as often as humanly possible,
too. I’ve always loved doing both, and my love for words has only grown since
my childhood.

I stayed local for
college and majored in Biology, with every intention of going to medical
school. That never panned out. I realized right before I took the MCAT that
what I wanted most out of life was to have a family of my own one day, and to
be able to write a book. It was then that I decided that being a doctor
wouldn't have left much time to accomplish either of those things.

Since then, I've
done child care, and tried to figure out where to go next, while also finally
working on my own stories that I can share with the world.

And I hope that the
amazing people that give me a chance fall as in love with my characters as I
have.
