Rushing out of the media room, I ran through the foyer and
up the stairs to Layla’s room. I knocked hard on the door and listened. There
was no sound or movement that I could hear. “Layla, open the door.” Still,
there was nothing. When I opened the door, her closet was open, and it’d been
cleaned out, along with her dresser. “Motherfucker,” I huffed. “Layla!”
The sound of a door slammed downstairs, so I took off out of
her room. How the hell could I not see her on the cameras? I ran down the
stairs and out the patio door. There were a line of trees blocking my sight of
the driveway, but I could see the top edge of one of the open garage doors. As
I drew closer, I could see her tossing her luggage in the back of a silver SUV.
She’d changed out of her green sundress from earlier into a pair of jeans and a
black T-shirt.
“Where do you think you’re going?” I called out as I stepped
away from the trees. Layla jerked around, eyes blazing like fire as she grabbed
the gun at her waistband and pointed it straight at me. I stopped and held up
my hands. “Whoa. What the hell are you doing?”
“I’m leaving. And if you try to stop me, I’ll blow off your
balls.”
Glancing down at her gun, I couldn’t help but notice how
perfect her stance was. She looked like she knew what she was doing. “I don’t
doubt it,” I replied cautiously. “Where’d you get the gun?”
Her eyes narrowed, but she kept the gun pointed at me. “My
uncle.”
Still holding my hands in the air, I slowly took a step
forward. “Did he teach you how to shoot as well?”
The muscles in her jaw tightened. “Yes. Believe it or not,
I’m not the helpless princess everyone thinks I am.”
“I never said you were, Layla.” I nodded at the video camera
just above the garage door. “How did you get out here without me seeing you?”
She lifted her chin, her lips tilting up in an evil grin.
“You’re not the only one who knows how to manipulate a camera. How else was I
supposed to sneak out as a teenager?”
Now I was impressed. “Guess we all have our secrets. Can
anyone see us right now?”
She shook her head. “No.” I took another step closer,
and her body tensed. “Dammit, Bryce, don’t test me. I already know my father
told you to stop me. No matter what he says or what you do, I am going to get
out of here.”
“And go where?” I asked. “To the city to find out the
answers?”
“If that’s what it takes. I’m not returning until he tells
me the truth.”
There was nothing but sheer determination in her eyes. The
woman was so goddamned stubborn she’d get herself killed in the process. We
were only about six feet apart, with the gun still pointed at my chest. There
was only one thing left to do. I wasn’t about to underestimate her.
“What if I told you what you want to know?” I said, hoping
she could see the truth in my eyes.
Her lips pursed. “Why should I believe you?”
“Because you said it yourself—you’re not going to stop until
you find out the answers. This is the only way to keep you safe.” It was also
the way to test her. I had to know how far her loyalty went with her father. It
might be what I had to do to finish my mission. Anthony would surely try to
come after me, but he’d have a hell of a time trying to find me.

EXCERPT:

Nebekker whistled. “Come on out, pretty one. My turn to be your mama for a little while.”

Silver waited, pretending not to be watching. Who in the desert was Nebekker talking to? Surely there couldn’t be children down in the cavern.

Nebekker whistled again. Her teeth flashed as she grinned. Silver followed her gaze across the river. There was something moving among the stalactites. Crouched…or even slithering. Something that matched the blue light and pale silver of the cavern.

The thing across the river purred.

Purred?

The sound touched Silver to her very core. She got to her feet and moved toward the river without thinking, as though a string tied to her middle pulled her. There was no staying away if she’d wanted to. The need to meet the creature on the other side of the river was far too great. She stepped into the river.

The ice-cold water over her boots slowed her down for only a moment. But that was long enough for Nebekker to grab her arm and hold her in place.

“Of course this would happen.” Nebekker sighed wearily.

“Let me go!” Silver had to get to the other side of the river.

“Stay right here. He’ll come to you. The stars know it’ll affect the both of you.”

In the back of her mind, Silver wondered what the old woman meant, but she didn’t ask because the pull to cross the river was still so powerful.

“I have to…”

She struggled to free herself, but Nebekker was incredibly strong. Just then a shadow slipped into the river with a splash and made its way to Silver and Nebekker. Silver knelt into the water, waiting. She didn’t know what for or if she was in danger. She only knew that she had to open her arms and greet it.

When the creature finally burst from the water, it bowled Silver over. She landed on her back hard, rocks digging into her spine. Her arms and chest became even colder than before, soaking in the river water. But she didn’t care. She was awash with euphoria. Within seconds, the warmth of the creature bled into her skin. Its happy heartbeat thudded in time with Silver’s. It purred again and licked her face until the smell of fish and river weeds overwhelmed her nostrils.

Silver laughed and opened her eyes. A pair of obsidian-dark eyes looked back down at her from a sky-blue face ringed with white.

“Another Aquinder,” Silver marveled. “A little one!”

“If your definition of little means the size of a house.” Nebekker stood over them. Her hands were on her hips and she didn’t seem particularly happy. “Kirja’s son. Another troublemaker, if you ask me.”

“No, he’s perfect.” Silver’s heart swelled nearly to bursting. “And I won’t have you calling him names or else.”

Nebekker snorted. “Or else what?”

“I don’t know what. But I’ll think of something. I’d do anything for…for…what’s his name?”

The water dragon licked Silver some more, then rolled over and let his tongue loll out to the side, just like Kirja had. Silver rubbed his belly.

He lowered his eyes, suddenly aware he was half-drunk and mostly naked at ten thirty in the morning. “Maybe I could take you to dinner.”
She snorted. “Don’t do me any favors. Let’s just go back to the way things were and pretend we don’t know each other.”
He looked back up. Was she serious? Last night was the best sex he’d had in ages. She’d been all over him like an animal; he could barely keep up. Maybe he’d failed to impress her. She was a little older than him. Maybe she had higher expectations than the college girls he usual landed in bed with. Still, he wasn’t one to beg. Not much, anyway. “Come on, Tess, what did I do wrong?”
“Nothing. You did nothing wrong. I’m just…just embarrassed and ashamed, and I want you out of my sight so I can pretend like it didn’t happen.”
With a sigh, he stepped backward toward the door. “Tell you what. I’m gonna get sober, get dressed, and then ask you out proper-like, okay?”
“What is this?” she asked. “You feel sorry for me or something?”
“No, not at all. It’s just—”
“I don’t need you to fix this. Last night wasn’t your fault. You were just behaving according to your nature. I’m the one who did something stupid.”
His confusion suddenly took a back seat to anger. “You keep talking about me like I’m too dumb to understand what you’re saying. I got feelings, too, you know.”
She actually snorted before turning back to her coffee pot to fill the mug she’d been holding. “Sure you do, cowboy. You and your feelings need to get the hell out of my house.”
“You know, some women are actually happy after a night with me.”
“Well, then, maybe your time would be better spent finding one of them.”
Fine. What was the point arguing with her when she was so all-fired determined to dislike him? “Maybe I will. I’ve got plenty of options. Plenty.”
“I’m duly impressed,” she said blandly.
“You should be. I’m talking tall, stacked, gorgeous young women.”
She slammed her mug on the counter, coffee splashing out, and spun to face him, this time with tears welling in her eyes. “Then go! I cannot imagine why you’re standing here bothering me when you clearly have better things on the horizon. Just go!”
“Fine! I’m going. And hey, keep that damn dog of yours on your side of the yard.”
“Leave Clark out of it. He never did anything to you.”
Cooper slammed the door behind him. He’d been living in companionable silence next door to that woman for nine months, now. They didn’t speak much, but sometimes he’d mow her lawn for her, or she’d pick up his mail for him and set it inside his screen door. It had been nice. Polite. But now, well, she could mow her own lawn and see how she liked dodging the piles of crap Clark left all over.
He beelined for his fridge and grabbed another beer. So what if she thought he was a slob? So what if she thought he was the male version of a slut? So what if she was maybe a little bit right?
He took his beer to his room, and before he fully realized what he was doing, he started unstacking the boxes in the corner until he came to the one marked, keepsakes written in his mother-in-law’s handwriting. He ripped the tape off and opened the box. He set his beer on the floor and began digging through the contents, a mishmash of items from jewelry to letters to photos. And then he pulled out a framed photo. He collapsed against the wall and held it in one hand while he reclaimed his beer.
Kirsten had been his first everything. First kiss, first partner, first love. In the photo, she was smiling, several months pregnant. She was staring up at a handsome young man who had never slept with anyone but her, and who never got drunk to numb his feelings, and who couldn’t wait to take on the responsibilities of fatherhood—a young man who was gainfully employed and took pride in his work. A young man Cooper never saw anymore when he looked in the mirror. No, what he saw in the mirror was exactly what Tess saw…a bum. A young, irresponsible, drunken bum.
The photo was beginning to blur as Cooper's eyes stung with unshed tears. “If I knew how to get back to that I would,” he murmured.
He kissed the photo, crawled into bed, and fell asleep with the empty bottle in one hand and the photo in the other.

EXCERPT:

My son’s wedding will be perfect. It has to be perfect. I’m his wedding planner. Oh, God. What was I thinking? Rubbing her throbbing temples, Suzy stared out the kitchen window and noticed the first sign of daffodils sprouting against the half-brown, half-green ground. The perky, yellow flowers usually made her smile.

Taking deep yoga breaths to quell her butterflies, Suzy continually gave herself non-stop, much-needed pep talks prior to the rehearsal dinner.

Tonight’s dinner will set the tone. Both families will either enjoy one another’s company—or everyone will count the hours until the whole blessed thing is over. I love weddings. That’s why I plan them but I never expected this much pressure. I want Jon to be thrilled with the results. Her mind swirled with possible worst-case scenarios.

Filling up her favorite “Best Mom” coffee mug for good luck, she drummed her fingers on the kitchen counter. Happily, the boys—they would always be boys to her even though they were young men—had agreed to pick up Fernando’s three brothers and mom at the airport.

She’d only spoken to Fernando’s mother once by phone and couldn’t get a word in. Not. One. Word. She hoped it was due to wedding jitters and not an everyday diarrhea-of-the-mouth occurrence. Overly chatty people got on her last nerve.

Before they arrived, she decided to check her wedding notes yet again. Suzy placed notes in a file for every bride and groom—or in this case, two grooms. Normally, she drew the wedding theme on the outside of the folder for quick reference since she occasionally had more than one wedding going at once.

Shuffling to the breakfast table where she often worked, she spotted the manila sleeve. Starfish, waves, and palm trees were drawn on the exterior. She smiled when she noticed Izzy had added a heart with Jon + Fernando scrawled in the middle. This is a good sign. Even my surly teen stepdaughter is excited about the wedding. She shook her head in wonder. My son’s getting married. He’s going to be a husband. And a dad. A dad! I can hardly believe both events are happening so close together.

Her mind skittered to Fernando’s family. She had tried to encourage them into flying in a day earlier from Italy, fearing they’d have airplane issues and miss the rehearsal dinner. But Gia Russo had texted from New York City hours earlier saying they were on schedule. Still, timing was tight.

Suzy glanced back at her list. Food. Wine. Engraved champagne flutes. Check. Scanning her notes for the hundredth time, she smiled when she noted a star beside Fernando’s favorite color—orange. Suzy had asked the florist to tie orange ribbons on the chairs at the wedding for a pop of color. She chuckled. Her son, Jon, couldn’t care less about colors but had requested simple white rose petals to cover the aisle during the ceremony.

Sipping coffee, Suzy’s mouth watered as she studied Cheri Van Buren’s fabulous rehearsal dinner menu. Her New York caterer friend had come through from afar. The grooms had requested Indian food placing Suzy in unfamiliar territory. Cheri had recommended Indian Summer, the best Indian restaurant in Crystal City, and assured Suzy she had spoken directly with Chef Raj.

We’re in good shape. The rehearsal dinner will be an intimate gathering as Jon requested with Fernando’s family; Vanessa, Jon’s former high school sweetheart before he came out; her best friends Alex and Hope; husband, Ken; and stepdaughter Izzy. This should be easy. No drama before the big day.

Suzy took another quick peek at her watch. Nothing like cutting it close. Alex must be rubbing off on me; she was born late. Rubbing her arms from nervousness, her mind wandered. I hope there aren’t any airline issues. Jon is probably beside himself and pacing the length of the airport about now.

Izzy was still at school and Ken was at work. Unusually anxious, Suzy wondered if she should drink a glass of wine before the dinner. She picked up her cell to call her husband, but his voicemail indicated he was in a meeting for another thirty minutes. Why is everyone busy until the last minute? I hope this means the ceremony will be flawless.

Deciding to take a quick shower, Suzy heard her phone vibrate as she turned off the water. Dripping all over the counter, she reached for her phone full of texts. One was from Alex who was running late. No surprise. Hope wondered if her school attire would be dressy enough. Jon mentioned he was nervous, excited, and leaving the airport. Ken said he would meet her at the restaurant.

I don’t have time to reply to all of these messages. Suzy quickly responded to Hope that her clothes would be fine and retreated to her walk-in closet. With a plush, gray towel wrapped around her wet body, she studied her wardrobe.

Originally, she had planned to wear a sundress, but immediately changed her mind and donned a more formal dress. Glancing in the mirror, Suzy frowned. This doesn’t look tropical. They want a luau for a wedding. My clothes should fit the theme.

Shedding her lacy dress and flinging it on the bed, Suzy studied her closet. Wearing only a bra and panties, the doorbell rang. She froze when she heard the door creak open.

“Mom, we’re here,” Jon said. “Er, everyone’s here. We’re coming in, ready or not.”

Springing
to my feet, I square my shoulders, and meet his gaze head-on. Dark gray storm
clouds swirl, uncontrollable. He bites down on the corner of his mouth, kicking
one foot up behind him, the sole of his shoe banging against the door.
Standing my

“I had to

The left

“I know.
But this thing,” he steps closer, crowding me, “it’s not going anywhere.”

way. But babe,” he drops his forehead to mine, his breath fluttering over my
lips like an invitation I desperately want to RSVP yes to, “I hated that so
many people threw shade your way. Every comment I heard pissed me off so much
more because it was said about you, not me. And I won’t let any of these people
talk shit about you.” He jabs a finger toward the party transpiring outside of
the smallest bathroom that ever existed. “And I’m not going to apologize for
looking out for you.”
“Cade,” I’m
breathless, quivering for him to stop talking and start touching. But I need to
be strong, resolute … honest. “I’m leaving in four months. I don’t do –”
“Serious, I
know. Me either.” His nose brushes against mine and I shiver. Shiver! “But give
me a shot, Lila. I’m not going to wifey you. Just let me take you out, kick it
with me, come to my games and rock my number, give it a chance.”
“What if
it’s too much?”
His fingers
close around my hips, tugging until my belly button is flush against his jeans.
Jesus. Need pools within me and as his fingertips grip harder, his body
grinding against mine, I whimper, desperate for relief from the wildfire
consuming me.
“What if
it’s too damn good?” he angles his head lower, his bottom lip ghosting mine.
“Let me light you up until we burn out. Babe, I’m not feeding you lines. I want
you, Lovely.”
