Great Summer Reads Countdown Blitz Mrs. Murray's Hidden Treasure Emily-Jane Hills Orford Day 1

An avid gardener, artist, musician and writer, Emily-Jane Hills Orford has fond memories and lots of stories that evolved from a childhood growing up in a haunted Victorian mansion. Told she had a ‘vivid imagination’, the author used this talent to create stories in her head to pass tedious hours while sick, waiting in a doctor’s office, listening to a teacher drone on about something she already knew, or enduring the long, stuffy family car rides. The author lived her stories in her head, allowing her imagination to lead her into a different world, one of her own making.

As the author grew up, these stories, imaginings and fantasies took to the written form and, over the years, she developed a reputation for telling a good story. Emily-Jane can now boast that she is an award-winning author of several books, including Mrs. Murray’s Ghost (Telltale Publishing 2018), Queen Mary’s Daughter (Clean Reads 2018), Gerlinda (CFA 2016) which received an Honorable Mention in the 2016 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards, To Be a Duke (CFA 2014) which was named Finalist and Silver Medalist in the 2015 Next Generation Indie Book Awards and received an Honorable Mention in the 2015 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards and several other books. A retired teacher of music and creative writing, she writes about the extra-ordinary in life and the fantasies of dreams combined with memories.

Half the population of the island of Madera are dead, killed by an unforgiving and indiscriminate plague. Oriana dreams of escaping her life of ruthless cruelty from the people who now rule over those who remain. No telling whom the plague will strike next, Oriana means to find freedom for herself and her people. Drawing strength from ancient tales of her enemy, young Oriana transforms herself from victim to warrior with the help of a mysterious and powerful dagger given to her by a kind and dying boy.

Years later, during her enemy’s betrothal ritual, Ezra, a boy she has never before seen, selects her as his mate. With servitude her only option, Oriana accepts the offer. Whisked away to a seemingly perfect world, Oriana discovers sinister secrets at every turn, including the identity of Tristan, a boy with whom she shares an undeniable but impossible connection.

Why would a boy she doesn’t know wish her to be his betrothed? Why does she feel such a strong pull toward a stranger? Someone in Ezra’s family not only knows the answer to both those questions, but also about the dagger Oriana possesses. He will do anything to stop the union. Now, with everything on the line, Oriana turns inward to find the strength she needs to seize the full power of the dagger so that she may protect herself and save her people.

Excerpt:

Before I clear
the field, I realize too late that it’s a trap. I have been herded like a
sheep, far from the few scattered homes, toward the deserted cliffside where no
one will hear my screams for help. Another boy with flaming red hair stands
behind a tree waiting for me; I recognize him from the market. I can smell him,
sweaty with a tangy sweetness that can only mean one thing. He’s been eating
apples and waiting for some starving girl foolish enough to think she could
steal some fruit.
I reach for my
dagger, strength pulsating so deeply that I nearly drop it from my sweaty palm.
Then, the voice of the boy of my dreams, whispers, “Hold it steady, Oriana. You
can do this.”

I tuck all fear
down deep within me. Later, I tell myself; later I will worry.

About the Author:

Born in Queens, New York, Clare Di Liscia moved to California as a small child and grew up in the hills by Dodger Stadium. Constantly roaming the woods, she took to embellishing on the stories of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle Duck to fill her imagination. To her horror she soon realized there was no way to fit a miniature tuxedo on a frog. Fortunately in sixth grade, Clare won a short story contest with the grand prize of fifteen happy meals. She would like to point out that two of those meal tickets were missing by the time her mother handed over her prize. After traveling extensively throughout South America and the Caribbean, Clare attended KU Leuven, in Belgium for University where she studied Dutch and French. Clare graduated from Cal State Northridge Film School, earning Dean’s List recognition with a BA in TV/Film. In 2006 she placed in the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting beating out 4700 other applicants. After joining SCBWI, Clare won 1st place HM in the Sue Alexander for her YA novel, now titled NELIEM.

http://diliclare.tumblr.com/

Interview with Clare Di Liscia

Do your characters seem to hijack NELIEM or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

Definitely the characters in NELIEM hijack the story. For example, I didn’t know there was going to be a love triangle. That came about organically and I think that’s one of the reasons it works so perfectly. There’s no forcing the characters to act or say what they say. It came from deep within me.

Convince us why you feel NELIEM is a must read?

NELIEM, inspired by my family history, is a girl-empowerment fantasy that deals with discrimination, poverty, abuse, and forbidden love. It has something for everybody in that you see through the eyes of Oriana, a strong-willed girl, who doesn’t allow herself to fall victim to circumstances. She might be poor, but she’s fierce, fashioning herself after her enemies legendary hero, NELIEM, a warrior who defied death.

The love triangle is unexpected, especially for Oriana, who at the beginning of the story has been rejected by every available boy in her village. It’s not until a mysterious boy from the ruling class, who selects her as his intended, does the possibility of happiness present itself.

Having someone you love and want to have a HEA will keep you turning the pages.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Sure. A lot of books. One is a modern day Huck Finn MG, which I love. It’s almost ready.

Pen, or type or computer?

My laptop.

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Yes! Thank you. This is a story straight from my heart. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it. If you have a chance, please leave a review. You can follow me on Twitter and IG: @diliclare

By Katrina S. Forest

Genre: Science Fiction

Age category: Middle Grade

Release Date: June 1, 2019

Blurb:

At 12.9 years old, number-obsessed Kade Walker has never heard of death. Literally. But neither has anyone else he knows. Kade is one of hundreds of kids "living" across the solar system through robotic avatars while their real bodies sleep in pods on Earth. Unfortunately, robot bodies can be hacked.

One day during an (innocent!) experiment, Kade unwittingly breaks a major security wall and releases an infamous hacker. The madwoman targets all the royal avatars, including Kade’s best friend, Princess Tamika of Venus.

If Kade and Tamika don’t want to become the hacker’s puppets, they’ve got to stop her fast--even if it means waking up on Earth to fight with bodies they never realized could be hurt.

Excerpt 1:
It wasn't the first time Kade had hacked the Venusian maintenance system, but it was one of the best. If he had to put a number on it--and there was very little he didn't put a number on--he'd give it a 9.7. He checked the cable leading from his tablet to the blocky computer box embedded in the burnt orange mountainside. Connection: serviceable.

Tamika leaned over to inspect his work. "Hey," she said. "What do you think our real bodies are like?"

Kade tightened his grip on the cable, causing a nearby rock to flicker. The dust around it swirled to match. "I... imagine you look the same, and I look like a person instead of a gargoyle," he said. "But, hey, no complaints. I hear Mercury's princess designed her social companion to be a purple unicorn."

Tamika blushed, and Kade's gaze dropped to his tablet. He knew his human body didn't look anything like his current one--no stony skin, no clawed hands. But he'd been controlling this robotic body all day every day since he was five. Telling him he had a flesh-and-blood body on Earth was like telling him he had a distant cousin on Pluto. A fun but ultimately useless fact.

He flicked his right wing, bringing an overlay of glowing text into view. Ninety-eight more seconds for the code to run. Current time: 17:03:34. He'd checked the time twenty-three seconds ago, but whenever he wasn't reading data, he felt lost. The overseeing adults called it unhealthy. Healthy people could watch a sunset without calculating its luminosity every thirty seconds.

Healthy people sounded boring.

"Kade," Tamika whispered. "Something's coming."

Kade froze and scanned the area. His sensors detected a deep clunk-clunk echoing across Venus's stone-hard surface. Low volume, maybe twenty to thirty decibels. He hoped it was only a patrol robot, but it was coming too quickly, its steps too out of sync for an AI-controlled machine.

Kade rushed through the last of his commands, and a thick metal door appeared in the center of mountainside. They had to do this fast.

Tamika examined the rocky pillars around them while Kade disconnected his tablet and gathered up his gear. The computerized robots would merely escort them home. The adults would question why they were hiding in the middle of nowhere. If he couldn't think of a good excuse--

"It can't be an adult," he muttered. "It can't be. They're already off Venus for the night."

Tamika glanced nervously over her shoulder. "Technically, I think Mr. Johnson had his curfew extended by an hour."

"Seriously?" Kade asked, almost spilling the tablet and cables. "Why didn't you bring this up earlier?"

"You just said to come meet you here! I didn't know you were plotting something!"

"I'm always plotting something!"

Tamika groaned, grabbed him by the arm, and bolted for the mountainside door. With a grunt, she yanked it open, dragging him inside with her. "Close it!" she ordered.

Kade nodded. Now that his program was healthily installed in the local hardware, getting it to do what he wanted was easy. With a few pre-programmed hand gestures, the augmented reality (or AR) he'd worked his butt off to disable came back into place. The door's color changed, looking more and more like the orange rock around it until it blended in completely. The illusion was so perfect, in fact, that even when he stroked it, he couldn't feel the door's edge. Tamika stepped up and ran her brown human-looking hand alongside his clawed gray one. The room's dim lights behind them made long, vague shadows of their arms along the wall.

Beyond the door, the footsteps picked up speed and decibel level until they came to a stop right outside Kade and Tamika's hiding place. They shuffled around a bit, no doubt in complete confusion. Then a man's voice gave a loud huff. There was a thud and a pattering of tiny pebbles against the now-invisible door before the footsteps stomped away again.

Oh, right. Kick the dirt. That's the mature thing to do. Kade threw his hands over his mouth to hold in his laughter. Like any adult could outsmart him. He'd lived his whole life through his bot. Controlling its robotic limbs, even from his sleeping body on Earth, came naturally. Reading its code was like reading a picture book.

To adults, the avatar-bots would never be their "real" bodies. Plugging in to control them would always feel foreign. They'd gotten too used to Earth life.

In other words, they were invaders in Kade's territory. And no matter how much they tried to keep him and Tamika in line, they were always going to lose.

The Scarecrow & George C by Mia Kerick

The Scarecrow & George C
Mia Kerick
Publication date: June 3rd 2019
Genres: Contemporary, LGBTQ+, New Adult, Romance

High school senior Van Liss is barely human. He thinks of himself as a scarecrow—ragged and unnerving, stuck, and destined to spend his life cold and alone. If he ever had feelings, they were stomped out long ago by his selfish mother and her lecherous boyfriend. All he’s been left with is bitter contempt, to which he clings.

With a rough exterior long used to keep the world at bay, Van spooks George Curaco, the handsome new frycook at the diner where he works. But George C senses there is more to the untouchable Van and refuses to stop staring, fascinated by his eccentricity. When Van learns that George C is even more cold, alone, and frightened than himself, Van welcomes him to his empty home. And ends up finding his heart.

Their road to trust is rocky and, at times, even dangerous. And looming evil threatens to keep them apart forever.

Fair warning: You may want to strap in. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

EXCERPT:

At least I don’t have to worry about my bosses wanting to get busy with me. They’re too passionately busy with each other. How fucking sweet. “Sounds like a blast. Have fun.”

This is about the extent of small talk I’m capable of. I hurry to my locker, where I pull out my messenger bag, lift the flap, and after untying my apron, I pour in the cash that’s weighing me down. Not that I’m complaining. Then, I pull on my flannel coat and oversized top hat, change into my boots, sling my messenger bag over my shoulder, and head back through the restaurant to the front door.

I hate that I have to come and go through the restaurant. That I have to be the real me—not food server me—in a place where I have a well-defined role. Not a role I’m exactly comfortable with, but one I can deal with. And I can “fake nice” when I’m working, but beyond that, it’s too much of an effort. And when I finally step onto the street and pull in a long-awaited breath of cool air that doesn’t stink of greasy food, he’s beside me.

“Hey, Donovan.”

“Van,” I say and sigh.

“I’m George…George Curaco.”

“Whatever.” I pull the flannel shirt around me tightly and turn away from him. But I have a job to do before I storm off. “You need to leave me the fuck alone, George C…or find a new job.”

I wonder if he steps back or gasps or covers his mouth with his probably greasy hand in response to my rudeness, but there’s no sound of movement.

“You can’t stop me from looking at you. Or asking you if I can carry your bag…to wherever it is you’re going tonight.”

I grit my teeth—it’s a trick I learned when I was a kid. To prevent me from screaming.

“Can I carry your bag?”

My jaw still clamped, I shake my head.

May I carry your bag?”

“Leave me the fuck alone.” Since I’ve voiced everything necessary on the subject of him and me, I brave a final glance. I need evidence that the puppy is down on the sidewalk, writhing in pain, having been kicked by the lying little bitch. But he doesn’t appear even slightly pathetic. The kid is studying me—his eyes seem serious, even sad, as usual, but he’s wearing a smirk. It hits me that George C isn’t sad at all. “It’s just your eyes…they look sad, but they’re not.”

“Just like your words. They make you seem mean…but you’re not.”

Oh, yes, I am!

George C pulls my bag from my shoulder by the long strap. “So where are we going?”

I snatch it back with a hiss. It’s louder than I intended. “I have no clue where you are going, but I am going home. Alone.” George C has succeeded in getting under my weathered, burlap scarecrow skin. This surprises me, as it hasn’t happened in years. I don’t curse at him again or spit on his shoes, which I’ve been known to do. I just storm down Depot Street in the direction of our duplex. To the second-floor suite I claim as mine. The Batcave. My safe space.

“I enjoyed our chat, Van. Really, I did.” His voice is soft and raspy, yet it carries all the way to me, and I’m at least ten steps away already.

It must be the direction of the wind.
