“Tell me, Audrey,” he murmured softly in my ear, “what’s one habit you
wish you could break?”
Half a dozen things other flashed through my
mind—using a fork and knife for my pizza, flossing my teeth at night while
watching TV in bed, other things that irritated my ex. Maybe the biggest habit
I needed to break was falling for the wrong men, but even that wasn’t a habit.
Once. It happened once. I just
happened to do it Olympic-style, and lost everything.
I bit my lip—another habit—before blurting out,
“I wish I was more spontaneous.”
Once my life didn’t go to plan with my parents’
death, I made damn sure I planned the rest. It hadn’t worked out. Was it karma?
Fate? The gods laughing at me?
“You seemed pretty… free-spirited earlier.”
Was this flirting? “Well,
you know,” I laughed uneasily. “What happens in Vegas…”
My earlier show in the lobby with the champagne
bottle was the craziest I’d probably acted since… well, ever. I couldn’t deny
that it was liberating.
Maybe I needed to be a little wilder.
Maybe I needed to have a fling.
Maybe I needed to remind myself that one of the
hottest men in the world was sitting close enough to irradiate my brain cells
and make me think naughty thoughts.
The taxi wasn’t so small that we needed to sit hip-to-hip and shoulder-to-shoulder.  His breath was hot at the top of my ear, and
I knew that if I just turned my head and tilted my chin…
I shook my head slightly, unable to even look
him in the eye. I didn’t have the guts. Dev wasn’t an adolescent boy anymore.
Now he probably dated supermodels and movie stars. And me? I had no game. Hell,
I’d already lost a few turns in the Game of Life.
“What about you?” I asked him as the car
stopped.
 “What
about me?” he replied.
He pressed closer, reminding me that I needed
to get out of the car before he could. I wriggled over, trying to keep my skirt
down and my shoes from slipping off.
Then I made the mistake of turning my head and
meeting his gaze, like a kid who can’t help but look at the sun during an
eclipse. His lips curved as he leaned his body into mine to make for the door.
My voice was needlessly breathless when I asked
him, “Do you have a habit you wish you could stop?”
“Compulsive kissing.”

Excerpt

My hand
moves against her opening, she is slick and wet, my fingers at her center, her
whimpers louder as I circle her clit. I need to taste her, and I ease down
Faith, between her legs, my tongue running over her entrance. Her fingers run
through my hair, her thighs trembling. I look up. “You okay, golden girl?”
“Yes,” she
says, her eyes meeting mine. “It’s just… I’ve never felt so many things at
once.”
My hand
stills against her. “Neither have I, Faith.” She understands what this means.
Not just for her; for her virginity. But for me. “This isn’t how it normally
goes.”
“What do you
mean?”
“I just met
you, just tasted you, and fuck, I love you.”
Her eyes
stay locked on mine. “Me too.”
It’s simple
and true and crazy and ours. And when my mouth returns to her cunt, I lavish
her with love. It’s fucking fast, this rush of emotions, but I don’t give
a shit. I’ve spent a long ass time looking, waiting, wanting. Now I found Faith
and I won’t let go. When you know, you fucking know.

All three
witches took their places. Dana stood in the north quarter in front of the
alter stretching her hands out for the twins to take in theirs. She pressed on
their hands and they all smiled at each other. Abi winked in my direction and

The ritual, my

About the Author:

Interview with Kellie M Davies
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
Being based in Montana, with a heavy mention of horses, ‘reins’ is the perfect term here when speaking about Mabon, the first book in my series ‘The Clandestine Chronicles’. I was completely at Lucy and her witchy family’s mercy when it came to writing their story - just when I thought I had planned a pathway, someone would go and do something fantastic and we would change course. It was a wild ride and I seem to be suffering the same wonderful issue writing ‘Yule’ book two!
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
After years of researching witchcraft (huge subject within itself), I wanted to write something that represented witchcraft in our current world with true roots that grew deep within history – something that would leave my reader wondering if they added rosemary to their tea, would they enhance memory function?
Have you written any other books that are not published?
‘Kate in Repeat’ is an adult fiction that crosses into the scarlet zone! To keep my writing consistent, I usually have two manuscripts going at the same time but they have to be worlds apart – so very different that I can check in and out of each as I feel the need and there’s no problem with crossing over. Looking at late 2019 for this release!
Pen or type writer or computer?
IPad with connected keyboard. I started out on a notebook as I find the smaller working units easier for my lifestyle - I take them everywhere I go as I find inspiration will often dictate my office when writing.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Creases at the corners of a book’s page often highlights the point in the story that the reader needed to walk away.

Tess Goodwin’s life in rural Iowa is sheltered and uncomplicated. Although she chooses to spend most of her free time playing chess with her best friend Zander, the farm-boy from next door, her skills as a bovine midwife and tractor mechanic ensure that she fits in with the other kids at East Chester High. But when her veteran father reenlists in the Army, moving her family halfway across the country to North Carolina, Tess is forced out of her comfort zone into a world she knows nothing about.

Tess approaches the move as she would a new game of chess, plotting her course through the unfamiliar reality of her new life. While heeding Zander’s long-distance advice for making new friends and strategizing a means to endure her dad’s imminent deployment to the Middle East, she quickly discovers how ill-equipped she is to navigate the societal challenges she encounters and becomes convinced she’ll never fit in with the students at her new school.

When Leonetta Jackson is assigned as her mentor, she becomes Tess’s unexpected guide through the winding labyrinth of cultural disparities between them, sparking a tentative friendship and challenging Tess to confront her reluctant nature. As the pieces move across the board of her upended life, will Tess find the acceptance she so desperately desires?

Read an Excerpt

I’m almost asleep, barely conscious of drifting off, when I’m startled by a noise outside my window. Before I have a chance to turn on the light and investigate, the sash slides open and someone steps into my room.

I hope beyond all hope I’m not dreaming.

“Zander?” I ask, not wondering if it’s him but why he’s here.

He’s all the way in the room now, standing at the foot of my bed. “Did I wake you?” he whispers.

“No,” I tell him. He blows into his hands, and I lift my blankets, inviting him under the covers to warm up.

“It’s colder than a polar bear’s butt out there.” He snuggles against me in my tiny twin bed like we’re still six-year-olds, camping outside in each other’s backyards. I wrap my arms around him, and he settles against my shoulder. “You left your own party.”

“It wasn’t really my party,” I say. “More New Year’s than anything else.”

“The cake was good. Red velvet. You would’ve liked it.”

There’s so much I want to say. Apologies I want to give. Promises I want to make. But the words are jumbled around in my head, and I’m afraid if I speak everything will come out all wrong.

“I didn’t have anyone to kiss at the ball drop,” he says eventually, and I wonder if whatever was in his Solo cup has gone to his head.

“Tina and Claire were there.”

He chuckles grimly and his voice turns serious. “We’ve been together every New Year’s since we were babies, you know that?” His words settle over me, and I strain under the weight of them. Heavier still is the burden of what he doesn’t say: And this might have been our last.

“I’m sorry,” I say, feeling the need to explain, “but it was so cold and I knew my dad was gonna need help with the herd and…”

He rolls over to face me, placing a finger over my lips. “It’s okay, Tess. I get it. It’s been hard being around each other for the past few weeks. I didn’t realize the anticipation of you leaving was gonna suck so bad. I didn’t know how horrible I was at long goodbyes.” Now he’s the one who’s apologizing. “I guess I didn’t know what else to do. I figured this day might be easier for both of us…”

“If you left me before I had the chance to leave you?”

“Something like that.” He sighs. “It wasn’t intentional. I guess I’ve been sorta messed up in my own head, thinking about not having you around. You’re the best part of my days.”

I blink back tears I don’t realize are already spilling down my cheeks. His admission is true for me as well—something we’ve always taken for granted.

“It’s only eighteen months, then we’ll both graduate and head to college together like we always planned. You and me. It’s not that long, right?”

“It’s not that long,” he agrees. “But it’ll never be the same, not having you right next door.”

His body is relaxed against mine, and I’m reminded of all the nights we spent together growing up, head to foot and back to back, me teasing him for his stinky feet and him making fun of my retainer. “Maybe someone better will move in here,” I laugh between sniffles. “Some Victoria’s Secret supermodel, schlepping around manure in waders and a thong.”

He chuckles, too, and I imagine him smiling in the darkness. “As tempting as she sounds, I still wouldn’t willingly trade you for her.”

There’s something unspoken in his words, a tiny invitation across a boundary we’ve never crossed. But I can’t cross it now. I won’t. There’s no reason to take something painful and make it complicated as well.

“I should go to sleep,” I tell him. “We’re leaving after the morning milking, and I gotta be alert enough to drive.”

He stirs under the covers and his warmth leaves my side. As he stands over me, silhouetted in the moonlight cascading through my window, I hear him sigh. Then, he leans down to place a kiss on my forehead like a father tucking in his child.

“Bye,” I say.

“Bye.”

“Love ya.”

“Love ya back.”

And then he’s gone, back through the window out into the night. I assume, in the wake of our farewell, it’s going to take me hours to fall asleep, but the next thing I know my alarm is going off, and it’s time to slide the chessboard of my past life on to the shelf and begin another match.

What He Wants by Jessie Gussman

What He Wants
Jessie Gussman
(Baxter Boys, #2)
Publication date: December 22nd 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

One night changed everything…

Cassidy Kimbell killed a man when she was only nineteen.

Torque Baxter took the blame, serving ten years for her crime.

He told her to flee the scene of the accident. He told her to run. He told her to keep her mouth shut, so that’s what she’d done. She’d let a boy with a crush become an innocent man behind bars.

Today, that man is being released.

Cassidy expects Torque to hate her. She knows nothing she has done to atone all these years can compare to what he’s lost. But she hopes becoming his sponsor on the outside, especially since she’s a lawyer now, might help.

Little does she know, Torque doesn’t want her to owe him.

He wants her to love him.

But to do that Cassidy would have to give up the life she’s built for the last ten years. She’d have to sacrifice it all, just like he did.

EXCERPT:

“Are you okay?” His voice whispered across her face, and she shivered.

“I’m fine,” she said. “You’re wet. Are you hurt?”

“I’m glad I’m wet. I wouldn’t want you to think I planned this.” He stood to his feet, the water splashing around them. “Glad it’s been a little dry this year and the creek’s low. It would have softened the landing, but you’d have gotten wet if the water had been higher.” He splashed out of the creek and set her down. She didn’t let go of his neck right away, and they ended up pressed together, his hands on her hips.

“Why would I have thought you planned it?” she asked, a little breathlessly. Neither of them was hurt, and it had been fun, even after the rope broke. For her at least. She wasn’t wet.

“So I could hold you.” His hands tightened on her waist, and his head bent so his cheek rested against her temple so his words hit her ear then drove straight to her heart.

“You don’t have to make up elaborate schemes with frayed ropes and water in order to hold me.”

His body stiffened. His chest heaved in and out. It took him so long to answer that she wasn’t sure he was going to. “This was almost as good as driving with you.”

They could have been teenagers again, with no worries and few cares, driving down the back roads, free and easy.

“I miss your old pickup.”

He stepped back, and she let her arms drop, missing his heat immediately. “I’d rather have gone driving, but I need to put a truck together first.”

He grabbed her hand, and she laughed. “You’re the only person I’ve ever met that doesn’t ‘buy’ a truck, but ‘puts one together.’”

His chuckle drifted back as he led her out from under the bridge. “I’d fall in that dang creek a hundred times to hear you laugh. You need to do it more often.”

Her smile froze on her face. “It’s good to hear you laugh too. It’s actually good just to hear you at all.” She didn’t mean to slam him for not talking to her after he went to prison, but it had hurt. She’d thought she meant something to him, but he’d completely shut her out.

He paused, one foot on the bank, ready to climb up. “I’m sorry.” He turned, searched her face.

“Why?” she asked, even though it wasn’t the first time, and he’d refused to answer her.

She could hardly contain her surprise when he put a hand in his pocket and shifted, opening his mouth.

Excerpt

“The dark
night of the soul? Mind telling me what the hell that was about?” The heavy
wooden door echoed through the tight chamber when it slammed against the door
jamb.
Bastien
remained still across the small sacristy, head bowed as he continued to work
quietly, deft fingers sliding thin, golden ropes of sacred fabric through his
fingers. “I’d rather know what you think.”
Frustration
thickened my blood. “I’m your dark night of the soul?! I think you went a step
too far.”
“If that’s what you call a step too
far I’d hate to hear what you call indecent.” His body was against mine in an
instant, my breasts heaving with shallow irritation and grazing the fabric of
his vestments.
This
profoundly infuriating man was under my skin like no one else had ever been,
and just like a bad tattoo, I’d pay a professional to gouge him out of my soul
if I could.
“This, for
instance,” he hissed, “is surely a step too close to your precious comfort
zone.” His body pressed closer, the deep ridge of his arousal cutting at my hip
and causing my throat to crack and turn to dust. “Don’t trick yourself into
believing that you know you more than
I do, Tressa.”
His dark
eyes glinted in the dim light, heartbeat vibrating in my ears the only noise in
the room. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
I couldn’t
catch my breath, his fingers crawling their way past my wrists, grazing the
underside of my elbows before his thumbs dug in and he was as far deep inside my
own heart as he could possibly go.
“You like
the dance, sweet dove, but just when things get intimate you pull away.”
His
scathing truth cut like a hot blade.
“No,” I
squeaked.
His soft
chuckle my only reply, my eyelids already glued shut in opposition of his
words.
“You think
you only show me the side of you you want me to see,” Bastien’s thumb danced
the arch of my brow, “but I see so much more than that.” His eyes flicked down
to my lips, hips working softly against mine.
“I’m
trained to see the broken parts you’ve spent a lifetime hiding. I’m trained to
be your light in the darkness, Tressa, but all that darkness,” his thumbs
worked inside my elbows, swaying me against his body as he grit against my
neck, “it weighs on me some days. Seminary doesn’t teach a flesh and blood man
how to channel all that darkness into…” he flexed behind his robes, my body
humming with pure desire for anything more he had to give, “productive
activities.”
I didn’t
have a reply for him, the way he swallowed my space and caused my heart to
thrum like a hummingbird was distracting enough, but his skin setting flame to
mine was beyond unbearable.
“What about
you, then?” I summoned my earlier anger. “You fancy yourself some sort of
holier than thou saint? Forgive me Father, but I call bullshit.”
Bastien’s
eyes held mine, the amusement chasing through his chocolate irises giving me
enough satisfaction to live on for days.
I squared
my shoulders. “You’re a prisoner to your belief.”
His
eyebrows rose, shock striking him before his face settled to that same
well-orchestrated calm he reserved for his parishioners. “You can bet I’m a
prisoner, but not for the reasons you think.”
His
admission caught me off guard, but not more than the next moment did.
His palms
caught my face, thumbs trailing down the warmth of my throat before he smashed
our lips together.
His kiss
defiled as much as it gave life.
He raped me
to the depths of my soul without ever removing a strip of my clothing.
“But that’s
where my beliefs with the church diverge.” He lips teased at the corners of my
mouth before his tongue darted out, tasting the bow of my top lip.
Oh sweet
fucking heaven.
“I happen
to believe it isn’t living if you’re not breaking a rule every now and again.”
He caught
the soft whimper on my lips with his, swallowing it instantly before his tongue
pushed past the barrier and he was sheathed in me again.
His taste,
far deadlier than I’d remembered.
“Despite
what my church may believe,” Bastien’s thumbs hooked at my shirt, the warm pads
of his fingertips sliding against my skin and cutting through my nerves like
hot butter, “I can’t renounce you.”
His palms
slid up my torso, divesting me of my shirt while one hand cupped a shiny
chalice, drips of wine already making their way between my breasts. Staining
the satin bra I wore, pooling in my navel, soaking a rebel river of red overtop
the elastic of my panties.
“I know the
taste of sin, sweet Tressa, I’ve tasted it every night in my dreams. Craving
you is a new and deadlier form of hell than the last I’d overcome.” He dropped
to his knees, the empty cup slipping to the floor and soaking his white robes
in scarlet before his tongue met my flesh in slow swipes, eyes glinting as he
held me flush to his mouth.
Soft mewls
formed on my lips as my body fell apart in his arms, limbs loose as he worked
his way up my body, tongue tasting every inch of the blessed wine from my skin
as he went.
“I am very
surely a prisoner to you, my sweet dove.”
