Redemption of the Heart by Moni Byce

Title: Redemption of the Heart
Author: Moni Boyce
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 8, 2019

After surviving an abusive relationship that landed her in prison, Gemma Peyton, just wants a fresh start once she is released. Her focus is to create a new life for herself and put men and relationships on the back burner so she can rebuild.

Alex Chambers hasn’t felt anything for another woman since his wife died a few years ago. His life is his restaurant, until the moment he meets his new waitress. Something stirs within him that’s been dormant for a long time.

Despite the baggage each of them is carrying, neither of them can fight the attraction they feel for one another, even though they try to resist. As they fall harder and deeper in love a shocking incident from their past that they unknowingly share, threatens to tear their newfound love apart.

Once the truth is revealed, will their relationship be able to survive? Or will the revelation shatter the love that’s grown between them?

“So, where are you taking me?”
Alex glanced at her and smirked before turning back to the road. “It’s a surprise.”
“You’re not even going to give me a hint?” Gemma pouted.
“No,” he laughed, and focused on the road. “Did I tell you how beautiful you look?”
Her happiness in his compliment beat out her shy nervousness and she beamed. His praise was giving her a confidence boost and making her feel bold. "Oh no, I know what you're trying to do. Attempting to flatter me by changing the subject."
Alex laughed. “Is it working?”
Giggling, she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. “Maybe.”
They both laughed softly and then grew quiet. After a couple of minutes, she noticed they were pulling up to the zoo.
Gemma turned to him with wide, expressive eyes. “Really?” She stared at the entrance of the zoo, excited.
Alex smiled even brighter, as he pulled the car into a parking space and put his arm over the back of her seat.
"I'm glad you're excited … I was afraid you'd think it was cheesy," he said nervously, not meeting her gaze, as he rubbed the back of his neck.
He finally looked up at her and saw the flush creeping across her cheeks. “Why do you look embarrassed?”
She bit her lip and looked out the passenger window before turning back to him. “I’ve never been to the zoo before.” She dropped her eyes to her lap. Her cheeks were burning with embarrassment. Most kids visited the zoo a dozen times or more in their childhood, but Gemma had never been. None of her foster parents ever cared enough to do anything with her. They were usually dealing with a lot of kids; just in it for the government money they got each month. The few school trips where she might have visited the zoo saw her enjoying a hospital stay courtesy of a foster parent or sibling.
When Alex said nothing Gemma turned to him. She found him gazing at her with a small smile on his face.
"Why are you staring at me like that?"
“It makes me happy to get to share this first with you.” Alex got out of the car, leaving Gemma sitting in the passenger seat looking at the spot he just vacated. The corner of her mouth lifted into a small smile. A short second later Alex was opening her door. She stepped out of the car, and they headed toward the entrance of the zoo.
Since it was a weekday, the zoo was not crowded. They slowly walked side-by-side checking out the animals, alternating between moments of conversation and companionable silence. After a lull in the previous conversation, Gemma looked over at Alex's profile. His eyes were downcast as he walked next to her with his hands stuffed deep in his pockets. She noticed that was a habit of his. As she studied his profile some more, she thought yet again, No man has a right to be that handsome. The curls on the back of his neck had her itching to thread her fingers through them. After admiring him for a minute longer, she asked, “Do you come to the zoo often?”
They stopped in front of the penguin habitat, and it was a moment before Alex answered her. He didn't look at her as he watched the penguins swim and play on the ice. Finally, he turned to her.
“I started coming here shortly after my wife died … I liked the company …”
Gemma looked at him with a confused expression.
“Animals can’t talk back,” he explained.
They shared a laugh, but she saw a faint sadness in his eyes. As he resumed his story, she saw his gaze drop to the floor.
       "I was lonely … I had this house, and it was only me rattling around in these empty rooms … when I did bother to come home from the restaurant."
He paused in his story as he peeped at her. She was unable to hide the concern and sorrow in her eyes. Alex cleared his throat and looked away before continuing on.
"Everyone kept telling me to get a dog, but I was barely taking care of myself. Since I wasn't ready for a pet, I decided to come to the zoo. It was comforting. The animals just let me be."
She continued staring at him long after he stopped talking, as he looked through the glass at the penguins. All this time, she’d assumed that it was an ugly divorce, that his wife had cheated and broken his heart. She was right about the broken heart. Which explained why he was so reluctant to speak of her before, why everyone else only talked about her in hushed whispers. She wouldn’t ask for details on how. It had already been painful for him to share she could tell. She couldn't imagine how much he must have hurt after his wife died, how much he may still hurt. She didn't want to pry, but somehow she wanted to comfort him like he did for her a couple of nights ago, so she moved closer to him. Her shoulder brushed his. They stood together staring at the frolicking penguins.

~*~

Alex looked at her with hooded eyes. He was thankful to her for just listening and not asking a bunch of questions. What a difference this woman was from his sister who could never seem to keep her mouth shut. Rachel could learn a thing or two from her. Sometimes people just wanted someone to listen. He slowly removed his hand from his pocket and let it fall to his side. His hand slightly brushed against hers. Was that a spark? He swallowed hard and then carefully grasped her hand in his. Her fingers curled around his. Their hands together felt so right wrapped around each other. His heartbeat quickened. He exhaled the breath he didn't realize he was holding.
They both smiled to themselves as they continued to watch the penguins. Alex stroked his thumb tenderly across the back of Gemma’s hand. He didn’t want to let her go.

After minutes of standing in silence and watching the penguins through the double-paned glass, they walked off still holding hands. Eventually, they resumed conversation as they continued to tour the exhibits. Alex pointed out his favorite animals as he alternated between stroking the back of her hand and using his finger to rub circles into her palm as they walked the zoo hands clasped.

Fey Guardian Box Set by Tiffany Shand

Welcome to the Virtual Book Tour for Tiffany Shand's Fey Guardian Series Box Set.

About the Box Set:

Our memories are who we are.

But for Zoe Finn, it’s all a blur. She has no memory of the first ten years of her life. The world around her is shrinking as she’s pushed up against her own inner demons. It’s a daily struggle just to breathe – until a handsome stranger enters her life.

Nick Trevelyan can help Zoe put her life together. As the last guardian, he enforces the law of The Circle, the council of races. With him by Zoe’s side, there’s no telling what they’ll discover. And as Zoe investigates the mysterious deaths of psychics, the truth about her own past slowly crawls into the light. As her unusual abilities come into focus, Zoe learns more about herself than she ever thought possible.

Will she succeed in unraveling her mysterious past? Or will this cruel world keep her shrouded in darkness?

Excerpt:

Zoe Finn sat across from the strange old woman, waiting for her to do something as she rubbed her crystal ball. What explanation would this fortune teller come up with? Or would Madame Zelda be a complete quack like so many others? Her reflection stared back at her—a woman with long brown hair and brown eyes. She looked out of place next to Madame Zelda with her bright red blouse and rainbow coloured scarf wrapped around her grey hair like a turban.
Zoe glanced around at the coffee coloured walls. A heady smell of incense filled the air and wind chimes jingled. The house didn’t look as retro as some of the psychics she’d visited, where the places had been filled with crystals and other new-age stuff. Not that she minded that kind of thing, but she just wanted to find someone who had some genuine psychic talent – someone who could actually help her. She didn’t like the ones who made a big show of things.
Zelda’s shop had opened a couple of weeks earlier, proving to be a novelty, an oddity among all the history of Britain’s oldest recorded town. She enjoyed the town’s mix of Tudor style and Victorian buildings mixed with more modern looking places. Zoe had eyed it on her way to work more than once, despite telling herself she wouldn’t go to see any more psychics or so-called mystics.
“What is it that I can help you with, dear?” Madame Zelda asked.
Zoe bit her lip. “This is going to sound crazy.”
“Tell Madam Zelda. There’s nothing too crazy for me.”
Where do I even begin? she thought and said, “I have a problem – I can’t remember the first ten years of my life. No doctor can find any medical reason why I don’t remember who I am or where I came from before I landed in foster care. They say it’s psychological, but every shrink and quack I’ve seen can’t help. I know something bad happened to me almost twenty years ago and I need to know what.” And I have weird powers that doctors would freak over if they saw!
The psychic brow creased. “That isn’t usually the type of problem I solve, but I’ll see what I can find out,” Madame Zelda said. “I will ask the spirits to help me find out about your missing past. Sometimes I see glimpses of the past as well as the future.”
“Thank you,” Zoe said and reminded herself not to get her hopes up as she placed a wad of cash onto the table. There was a good chance Zelda wouldn’t see anything. After more than a decade of trying to get answers, she doubted anyone was going to magic them out of thin air.

Picture Not Perfect
by D.E. Haggerty

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A picture tells a story. But is it the truth?

When the police find pictures of Melanie hanging up at her murdered colleague’s house, they’re convinced he was stalking her. Maybe she even killed him. Melanie was not being stalked! And she certainly didn’t kill her supposed stalker – as if. But Mel – always up for a bit of drama – jumps at the chance to go search for the real killer. When Mel’s ex-boyfriend, Owen, discovers her plans, he pulls out all the stops to ensure she’s safe and to win her back. No matter what happens with the murder investigation, he’s not letting her go. With the police setting their sights on Mel, he may need to jeopardize his own career on the police force to protect her.

Will Mel find the real killer before the detectives arrest her for murder?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Melanie opened the driver’s door and slipped into her car. She watched in the rearview mirror as Pru climbed into the back seat. The woman who was almost always wearing flowery clothes was now dressed from top to toe in black. Black tights, black long-sleeved t-shirt, and black knit cap.
What’s with the knit cap? It’s like 60 degrees out. You’re not sick, are you?” Mel didn’t fancy sitting in a car with someone coughing the entire time.
Pru adjusted her cap to ensure her curly red locks were completely covered. “I thought we were doing a stakeout? I didn’t want my hair to give us away.” She held up the bags she’d brought. “I brought snacks and everything.”
What kind of snacks?”
Before Pru could answer Mel’s question, Terri butted in. “We’re not doing a stakeout!”
Mel ignored Terri. Of course, they were doing a stakeout. She turned back to Pru. “Seriously, what did you bring? Anything good?”
Terri interrupted her again, “Why are we doing this?”
Mel grunted and turned around and started the car. They fell into silence as they drove the ten minutes to the address Ryder had provided.
Pru handed cups of coffee to Terri and Melanie. “Here. What do we do now?”
Mel took a sip of her coffee before answering, “We wait for something to happen.”
Like what?”
Mel had no answer. She wasn’t exactly an expert on stakeouts. The previous and only other stakeout she’d been on ended quickly when the bad guys tried to ram their car into hers.
How do you deal with potty breaks? I’ve got a bladder the size of a pea.”
Terri snickered next to her. “I’m sure we can find a bush for you to squat behind.”
They never get into these details in books,” Pru grumbled before putting her coffee back into the drink tray without taking a sip.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I grew up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on, from my mom's Harlequin romances, to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When I wasn't flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic before returning to the law. But practicing law really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out running a B&B wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from my adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where, in between tennis matches and failing to save the world, I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.
Picture Not Perfect is my fourteenth novel.
