Book Description:

After imposing a controversial quarantine, Adelstadt Mayoress Mirabel Fairfax finds herself in the crosshairs with vengeful highwaymen. When they target her family and the vital shipments her village desperately needs, she turns to witchcraft to restore order herself. But something is wrong: her magic becomes unreliable, and monstrous images torment her mind's eye.

When gruesome murders terrorize Adelstadt, she suspects the highwaymen have turned to the occult, allying with a demonic entity. A Goetia. The hallucinations become all-too-real, and Mirabel must rely on her cunning, wrath, and what few friends she has left if she hopes to rescue her valley, her beloved, and her mind.

Felix Fairfax does the best he can as the husband of a controversial mayoress witch, but his life is once again turned into a fight for survival when he’s kidnapped by the highwaymen. They force him to help investigate his wife’s hidden lair, where they become trapped with creatures of unspeakable horror. Whatever Mirabel had locked away hunts indiscriminately—it hunts him—and if it gets out, plagues and highwaymen won’t be Adelstadt’s problems any longer.

Excerpt:
Mirabel’s boots
clicked down a stone, spiral stairway, blowing past the half-melted candles
lining the steps. The candles provided the only light, at times leaving her to
fumble for footing on the disrepair of the steps. The descent into darkness
went on longer than she’d ever recalled experiencing before. What a time for
metaphysical nonsense. An echo of raspy, hollow screams chased her,
reverberating within the stairwell, challenging her to keep up speed.
She stumbled off
the final steps, at last on the ground floor, and clawed her wild, deep red
hair from her face. Archaic, religious candle racks illuminated the chamber.
Nothing had changed down here. At least, not yet.
She sped past
rows of dilapidated tables and pews, reached a laboratory-style workbench, and
threw her arms against a stack of journals, scattering the research. Upon
snaring a specific handful of pages, she sprinted for the tower entrance.
A bony tusk
punched through a nearby wall, knocking candles from their altar. They struck
silver offering plates on the floor, crashing like cymbals. Mirabel leaped
back, one hand clutching her research against her body, the other gripping the
handle of her rapier.
Black, viscous
slime poured from the hole around the horn, crept over the altar, and dripped
onto the floor. Small, misshapen hands sprouted from the goop like blooming
black-fingered flowers, grasping at the stone tiles. A reek like sweet, rotting
fruit flooded the air.
She closed her
gaping mouth, turned away, and continued running down the hall. Her
burned-orange cape fluttered and whipped, a nuisance, rescinding its value.
The entire tower
quaked, followed by more disembodied shrieking. A spiny, gray tentacle as thick
as a branch smashed through the wall ahead in a deafening boom, lashing and
twisting like an eel out of water. She drew her rapier and severed the tip with
the sharpened, distal edge of her weapon. The piece of otherworldly flesh fell
away, but several more tentacles punched through imperfections in the
surrounding walls, blocking her path. Each unique arm contorted at varied
rates, some more aggressive than others.
Still holding
her sword, she extended her arm and channeled magic through it with a rush of
heat. Upon releasing her focus, the heat fled her body and flames burst in
front of her, engulfing the tentacles and transforming them into crackling ash.
Vertigo crashed
over her in waves as penalty for her sudden, great expenditure of soul energy.
With inhuman moans drifting on the air, she shook off her fatigue and proceeded
to the iron double doors ahead, ramming her shoulder against them. They opened
a crack, blasting her face with freezing air from outside.
She pushed
against the door, and it ground open, scraping through a layer of fresh snow.
She slipped her thin frame through, dropped her research and rapier, and shoved
the door closed.
“Mayoress?”
She spun and
straightened her posture. “Under no circumstances is anyone to approach the
tower.”
Two guardsmen
clad in vermillion red, double-breasted uniforms stood at the base of the tower
steps, shoulders dusted with snow. They possessed several weapons: muskets with
bayonets, sabers, and crossbow pistols. All useless.
“Aye,” said the
leading guard. “We thought we heard some rumbling from our post. Another
quake?”
She knelt,
sheathing her rapier and collecting her papers. And then she saw the ooze. Not
much, but strands of it slithered under the door. She backed away and marched
down the steps.
“Evacuate.”
“Excuse me,
Mayoress?”
She stopped
between the guards and faced the shift lead. “Evacuate. It’s a simple concept.
Do it now.”
“Evacuate what?
Ironsnow?”
“Yes, the entire
hamlet. Get everyone to Adelstadt at once.” She looked past him at dozens of
wood-framed homes at the base of the tower’s hill, billowing smoke from their
chimneys. “No one goes near the tower. Get everyone out now.”
The other guard
spoke. “But why? Minor quakes happen all the time. My family lives here.”
The three
marched down the hill. Mirabel said nothing.
“Mayoress?”
“Miasma. I’ve
discovered the tower is the source of plague-infested miasma. Likely the cause
of other outbreaks around Adelstadt. Deadly strains. None can reside here any
longer. I’m sorry.”
“Tordin’s
mercy,” said the guard. “I’ll have my family pack right away.”
“Nay. Full
evacuation. Immediately. Have the citizens take only what they can carry on
their way out.”
“It’s that
urgent?”
“I am the
Mayoress and a syndicate-certified disease specialist. You think I give this
order lightly?”
“Of course not,
Mayoress Fairfax,” said the lead guard. “We’ll get everyone out within the
hour.”

“Faster if you
are able. Much faster.”

12 Days of Clean Romance - Julie Coulter Bellon

Second Look by Julie Coulter Bellon

When the most wanted terrorist in the world escapes from a high security prison, Nate Hughes is part of the task force sent to recapture him. During the mission, he meets Abby, a fellow investigator that seems to have it all together. He's drawn to her and hopes they can join forces, but when her past is revealed, loyalties are called into question. Could she have turned against the country she once held dear?

The CIA wants her captured and interrogated, but with a terrorist attack imminent, Abby may be the only person in a position to help them stop it. Nate must make a choice to either trust her or turn her in---but the wrong decision would clear the path for the largest attack on freedom the world has ever seen.

And time is running out.

The lights were off, but a little sunshine filtered through the two high windows in the room. He peered inside, his weapon at the ready. He hadn’t expected to see a place that looked like something straight out of a luxury hotel with white linens, cream-colored couches, and pillows everywhere. Abby was curled up in the middle of the large four poster bed, her eyes closed. Her breaths weren’t even, though. Not only was she not very good at the quiet game, she was terrible at playing possum.

“You’re a terrible faker,” he said softly, turning to shut the door. “The first rule of playing possum is to make sure you’re taking deep, measured breaths.”

She sat up, staring at him in disbelief. “Are you a fake sleeping champion, too?” she said in mock annoyance. “I’ll have you know, you took about a year off my life. I thought you were Ramzi coming to check on me and I didn’t want to get caught with this.” She pulled a laptop out from underneath the pillows next to her.

“Find anything interesting on it?” He smiled at repeating the same words to her that she’d said to him at Belmarsh. This was the Abby he’d met at the prison— confident and familiar.

“I was just getting to that when you walked in.”

NBTM Can Dreams Come True? by Krysten Lindsay Hager

Can Dreams Come True?
by Krysten Lindsay Hager

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   YA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
I felt disloyal sharing my problems with Zach with another guy, but in some weird way it was like no one got me like Andrew did. Even though we had only known each other for a little over twenty-four hours, it was as if I had known him for ages. Although I guess it made sense seeing as it always seemed like he understood what I was going through whenever I listened to his music.
I ended up pouring out the whole gross story about how insecure I felt about Tanna and how I didn’t want to seem jealous, but I didn’t feel comfortable with Zach hanging out with her.
“I know you’re probably thinking, well, obviously her first serious boyfriend, how insecure and jealous can she be?” I said wishing I hadn’t opened my mouth.
“Nope, not at all. In fact, I was thinking this crap is why I don’t date more. What is it with our generation being so casual about stuff? Again, people call me old-fashioned, but I don’t think you and I are wrong to expect people not to hang out with their exes anymore. And if I’m old-fashioned, then why are my songs about this exact thing so popular? I can’t be that out of touch if people are relating to the lyrics, right?”
“Yeah, I think a lot of people want commitment deep down,” I said. “Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe guys just want to date as many girls as possible and not settle down.”
“The media says I come off as this wounded guy as an act to get more female fans.”
I bit my lip. I had heard those rumors, too. In fact, at my old school, people made fun of me for falling for his fake image and said I was too naïve to see he was a player.
“Why are people so cynical?” he asked. “There was this article about me called, ‘Vulnerable or Vulgar: Is Holiday for Real?’”
I had read the article five times and then went online to read the outtakes from it, but all I said to him was, “Oh?”
“Yeah,” he said. “The journalist who interviewed me had an edge to him. The whole time I could tell he didn’t like me, and I almost wanted to call him out on it. I gave short answers and he labeled me, ‘moody and reclusive.’ Actually, I’d like to be reclusive, but I can’t get enough time off to do it,” he said laughing. “Being a recluse is just a dream at this point.”
I giggled. “It’s annoying how people just make snap judgements about you and they can put it out there.”
“I know, right? And if I’m having a bad day because I don’t feel good, nobody writes, ‘He had a sore throat and doesn’t feel like talking.’ No, they make it sound like I was being stuck up when all I wanted to do was go to bed and not die from the flu.”
Interview with Krysten Lindsay Hager
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
One of my favorite parts is when Cecily is on the music video set and goes into a trailer and her pop star crush, Andrew Holiday comes in and they have a conversation where they see they have a lot in common. I love that the conversation isn’t some surface flirting, but instead they have a deep conversation and get to know each other. You can see a friendship (and maybe more) forming.
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I would like to spend the day with Andrew Holiday the singer/songwriter and see what his writing process is like. He’s very grounded for someone living his dream in the spotlight. I’d like to see how he got that way and how he manages to keep grounded with all the fame.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
I’d love to have written The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It’s one of those books I can reread and find something new in each time.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
It’s really hard to base a character on a real person because people are so multidimensional. It’s so much easy to create your own characters.
5. What made you want to become a writer?
I used to like making up storylines for my dolls when I was a kid. I was very into soap operas, movies and books thought it’d be amazing to create stories people could escape with.
Not So Secret Santa by Susan Mac Nicol
I used to work in the West End of
London – the theatre district – which was an amazing experience even if it did
take me two hours each day to get to work.
The West End is a magical place
to experience the cosmopolitan flavour of London, and a great place for people
watching. Especially if you have a yen to try and spot someone famous.
At Christmas, though, it shines
brighter than ever. To get home, I walked back to the tube station about half a
mile away, through the teeming streets of people, and snapped some shots of
London in full Christmas regalia.
The vibe is something to be
experienced, an excitement in the sir, coupled with a lot of swearing from
fighting couples tired of endless shopping, and tempered with the quickfire
conversation of Japanese tourists. And the men in kilts playing the bag pipes
were a welcome addition too 😊
It is a city that never sleeps,
like a hummingbird that flies on the periphery of your vision and catches your
attention. And you fly along with it, caught up in its thrall and soak up the
season in all its vibrant and sparkly majesty.
Tagline: Leslie's feeling the season in a big way. After the Kissmas Drag Stravaganza at Club Delish, he plans to ask Oliver to marry him, but, as with all things Leslie, nothing goes quite as planned.
Book Description:
Leslie Scott couldn't keep a secret if his life depended on it...and this one's a doozy. After years of blissful co-habbing, Leslie plans to ask the love of his life, Oliver Brown, for his hand in marriage. Leslie agrees to help with the Kissmas Drag Stravaganza at his dear friend's nightclub, Club Delish, which is also the site of the impending proposal.
Every detail is planned with Swiss watch precision: enjoy the show, bring Oliver back to a private room, seduce him then pop the question. But, as with all things Leslie, his scheme goes tits up.
Never one to shy away from drama and public displays of affection, this proposal turns out to be one for the books.
Finally, the
door opened to reveal a pink faced and flustered Leslie, hair suspiciously out
of shape and with silver glitter on his face. He beamed at Oliver. “I’ll just
get my jacket, and my man bag and be with you in a second.”
The door shut in
Oliver’s face and he stared at it in disbelief.
What the hell is
going on in there?
He opened the
door and entered. Leslie looked up with a start and Oliver couldn't help but
notice the other man bent over in the corner, covering something up with a
piece of fabric. A man who had a very nice arse and when he finally stood up to
face him, looked like a Latin wet dream. The man was petite and utterly
gorgeous. And looked as guilty as hell.
“What’s up,
sweetheart?” Oliver strode over to his boyfriend and pulled him close for a
kiss. Leslie melted against him and returned the kiss with fervour. When they finally
drew apart, Leslie seemed to realise someone else was in the room with them.
“Uh, honey, this
is Chester. He works here with me. Chester, my boyfriend Oliver, if you hadn’t
already guessed by that kiss. That very possessive kiss.” Leslie’s eyes glinted
dangerously and he brushed a strand of glittered hair back from his face.
Oliver didn’t care if he’d overstepped the mark. He wasn’t a jealous man, and
trusted Leslie, but this situation was a little weird. If Leslie could
embarrass porn stars on his behalf, Oliver could stake a claim.
