Beautiful Sinner by Sophie Jordan

Locked in with the town bad boy . . .
Most women would be scared, but Gabriella’s only worried about resisting Cruz Walsh, who’s even hotter than he was back in high school. Cruz was wrongly accused of the high-profile crime for which he was imprisoned; Gabriella’s desperate for the scoop that will get her career off the ground and get her out of Sweet Hill, where everyone still remembers her as “Flabby Gabby.” Being stuck in a supply closet with Cruz is the perfect opportunity to land an interview. What Bri doesn’t count on is Cruz taking “up-close and personal” to a whole new level.
If there’s a silver lining to the hell Cruz went through, it’s that losing his freedom put everything in perspective. Maybe starting over someplace new would be easier, but after years locked up, Cruz values his family—and his true friends—more than ever. So he’s back home, facing the gossip, dodging reporters . . . and face-to-face with Gabriella Rossi. They’ve both changed: Bri wants a story and Cruz just wants her. Another thing he’s learned? Don’t let a good thing slip away.

“How long have you been wanting to kiss me?”
It was tempting to fling the truth at him—the truth that they had already kissed. It would feel good to catch him off guard and watch him absorb that fact.
She couldn’t do it, of course. After the satisfaction of shocking him wore off, she’d be left with the awkwardness of him knowing she was the idiot who had kissed him in the boathouse while he thought she was someone else.
“You were stroking my lips,” he reminded.
“I was checking to see if you were breathing.”
He whirled her around, sending her colliding into his chest.
“Oh!” Her hands came up to his chest, palms flattening on the very body she had only moments ago felt at her leisure. Now it felt different. Now he was awake. Alert . . .his eyes as sharp as a hawk’s gaze on her. Now his heart pounded swift and hard beneath her touch.

SNEAK PEEKS:

Alpha Untamed by Misha Carver

“To a great week,” Jonathan shouted over the music as he clinked his beer bottle against mine, Bob’s, and Charlie’s.

Yeah, a great week, I thought to myself. It was the worst week of my entire life. I’d prosecuted six cases, and lost five of them. My days as a prominent lawyer were coming to a close if I couldn’t get back on top.

A five-year winning streak, and one week threatened to topple it all. My feet kept tapping on the floor, not so much to the loud music playing in the background, but more out of nervousness.

The guys, they all had a great week defending their cases against me and pulling ahead. A great week for them was a huge defeat for me, and yet there I was celebrating with them, just like they’d helped me celebrate each and every win along the way. It just felt so wrong. I never lost. NEVER. But I had, and I’d lost big.

“Ah, suck it up, Michael,” Charlie said as he took another sip from his bottle. “You can’t win every time.”

Charlie was such a schmuck. With his red hair, freckles, and big blue eyes, he appeared much more innocent than he was. Judges let him get away with countless courtroom antics because of his boyish good looks along with his ability to win almost any debate.

Wanna bet? I thought as I nodded my head in agreement with him. I didn’t have the energy to argue with an idiot.

“Buy me another beer, loser,” Bob said as he set his empty bottle down on the table and grinned.

Great, thanks for rubbing it in, I thought to myself as I motioned for the waitress to come over and grabbed a twenty out of my pocket. After the week I’d had, I didn’t need to be reminded of my failures.

An Alpha’s Fate (A Birchwood Pack Novella) by Lia Davis

No. No. Bile rose, threatening to force Reagan’s lunch to make a gruesome return. The snow-white walls of her home closed in around her, and the air seemed colder. How had she not known?

Because they weren’t true mates. Even though they were bound together, their emotions and thoughts weren’t, not like they would have been if she’d mated with her fated mate.

She stared at the open journal as fury built inside her, putting her wolf further on edge. The names neatly handwritten in black ink blurred. For ten years, she’d done all she could to protect the wolves of Greenhedge; the least she could do after being forced to mate the male who’d become Alpha—a title rightfully hers. All her efforts were wasted. The bastard had sold packmates to a rogue Pack to be made into monster assassins in exchange for what? She didn’t know. She sure as hell didn’t see any extra money go into the run-down den.

Fucking power-hungry bastard.

The front door swung open, slamming into the wall. A low growl cut through her as she met the poor excuse of an Alpha’s stare. Lifting the journal, she shook it at him. “You lied to me.”

He stalked toward her, his eyes glowing with his wolf. “You are out of line, Mate.”

Was she? She thought not.

“My place is protecting my Pack from monsters like you.” Anger had all but consumed her. It was one thing to blackmail her into a loveless mating and slap her around, but to hurt her Pack?

Mason stopped before her, then gripped a handful of her hair, jerking her to him. Pain shot through her skull. She gritted her teeth and focused on his energy, his Alpha power. As his mate, she had the ability to use his strengths. Something he hadn’t realized she could do. Or maybe he thought she didn’t know how.

“You have crossed the line for the last time, asshole.”

He bared his teeth and flipped her so he could shove her torso against the desk. Her vision blinked out as her head hit the wood. When he started to tug her pants down, she roared and jerked her head up, slamming it into his nose.

Crying out, he released her and stumbled away a few steps. Not wasting time, she shifted into her wolf faster than she ever had before and lunged at him, tackling him to the ground. Her wolf had taken over, and for once the woman relished in it.

The thought that it was unfair to fight another while they were in human form was a whisper. One her wolf ignored. Mason Doyle had fucked over his last victim.

She struck, fast and hard, sinking her teeth into his neck. He bucked under her, but he was unable to shake her off. Adrenaline raced through her veins, fueling the rage. The animal wanted blood for all the innocents lost over the years. With a growl, she shook her head, tightening her hold until his body went limp and the mating bond broke.

Her breaths came in and out in deep waves as she slowly backed away. The taste of his blood coated her tongue. The wolf wanted to finish him, to revel in the kill, but there was no time. Someone was coming, and without the bond to the Pack she couldn’t tell who.

You know those stories where the smart girl tutors the dumb
jock? This isn’t it.

What’s the probability of insulting the one guy on campus I
need to help me pass statistics? If I knew, I wouldn’t be standing in front of
Wes Reynolds begging him to tutor me.

class… these are the things I knew about him. What I didn’t know is that he is
a seriously smart jock.

Wes
What’s the best way to get rid of the peppy and unrelenting

Excerpt

“Rise and shine,” Joel says as he nudges me. I’m not asleep.
I wish I were. My eyes are closed, hat pulled down, but there’s no sleep to be
had.
“She’s coming back for more.” The tone in his voice is
almost inspired.
I don’t have to look up to know who he’s talking about, but
I do anyway. She’s the most entertaining thing about this class. Open my eyes
and lift the hat, turn it backward so my view isn’t the least bit blocked.
Today she’s wearing little pink shorts that show off tan
legs, yellow tennis shoes that don’t match but somehow work, and a bracelet
with a little charm around her left ankle. It’s too small to make out, but I
stare anyway. Her brown hair is pulled up in a high ponytail, and she has a
megawatt smile plastered on her face. A big bow on top of her head is all she’d
need to look like head cheerleader of my high school fantasies.
“Wes, hey, can I talk to you for a second?”
“What’s up?”
I’m hella impressed by the balls on this chick. She’s put
her foot in her mouth, not once, but twice, and damn near insulted the entire
student athlete population, but she keeps coming back. She has determination
and grit. I admire that about her.
I also am not in the least bit offended by her assumption
that I’m a dumb jock. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised she came right
out and asked who my tutor was, but I know exactly what it looks like. I’ve fed
into the stereotype for years, doing nothing to make it seem otherwise. Well,
nothing but get straight A’s.
“I have sort of a favor.”
“What’s up?” I stand to walk with her out of the class.
“The tutor center was a bust. I know you said . . .” She
looks like she’s choosing her words carefully. “Do you have old study notes or
tests from previous semesters?”
“Still convinced I’m not capable of passing on my own, huh?”
“I’m sorry, really, no offense. I just want in on whatever
study materials you’re using. I can’t afford to fail another test. What’s your
secret?”
The secret? I’m fucking smart. Photographic memory smart and
statistics is my whole world, but I can’t resist messing with her.
“You know, saying no offense doesn’t make whatever you’re
saying less offensive. It just makes you feel better about saying something
offensive.”
Joel snickers behind me. I just can’t resist fucking with
her. She’s making it too easy.
“Sorry. I’m really so sorry. What about the other guys on
the team? Anyone have any awesome math tutors who aren’t available to us
non-jock students? I can pay.”
“Couldn’t say for sure, but I don’t think so. Most the guys
hold their own academically.” I lean in catching a whiff of her hair. It smells
good—like sugar cookies or candy canes or something sugary sweet that I want to
sink my teeth into. “Shocking, I know.”
Her shoulders slump in defeat, and I can tell she’s finally
accepted that I have no answers for her. At this point, I almost wish I knew of
someone to send her to. I don’t exactly travel in circles that clue me in on
secret study sessions and underground tutor societies.
“Thanks anyway.” She gives a little wave with the hand
clutched around the strap of her backpack.
Joel catches up to me, and we watch as she crosses the
campus toward the library. “Dude. That chick . . .”
“I know,” I say, and we continue to stare after her
completely awe stricken.

Book Description:

Elizabeth O’ Toole has finally gotten her life where she likes it.  She plays harp for the local symphony.  She shops high fashion labels at vintage stores.  She’d recovered from her tragic past and she has her friends Catherine and Alan to thank.  After suppressing her extra sensory perception with intense study of her harp, she finds her music is suddenly connecting with a new audience; particularly a young girl, Emma Brady, who has been murdered.  With each ghostly visit, the hauntings grow more intense and more terrifying.

Investigating the case is ruggedly handsome Detective Mike Flannery.  Known for his fast thinking and bravery on the force, he has his own past and reputation he’s trying to keep at bay.  Coming from a rich and powerful family, he’s out to prove he can fight for justice ny being a good cop rather than moving up the ranks through nepotism.  Mike and Elizabeth’s paths collide at Emma’s funeral.

The daughter of a Senator, the family wishes to the investigation done quickly and quietly.  Mike can’t close the case because some of the pieces just don’t fit together.  Elizabeth holds the key to the murder mystery but will be believe her and her unusual connection to the dead victim?  Will she and Alan find a way for the dead to tell their stories?

A novel that spans two worlds and two time periods, this book is one part science fiction, one part paranormals mystery and all romance.  Intertwined is a love story of the most unlikely couple.  A killer is on the loose and both Elizabeth and Mike are on the hit list.  If they work together, Mike just might solve the case before more people fall victim.  But he can’t do it alone.  He’ll need the help of Elizabeth as she connects her living world to that of the dead.  She’ll need Mike’s protection and he’ll the talent and bravery of The Harpist.

Excerpt:

“Being a composer is a lot like being a judge.  A composer sits at a desk and takes his or her knowledge to write some of the world’s most beautiful music.  It takes brains, there’s no question, but in no way does it take courage.  It’s always bothered me, really.  How can a composer win an award for something they’ve never played themselves as a musician?”
“Mike, on the other hand, has chosen a job far more courageous than yours.  His knowledge of the law is played out in split second, life or death decisions.  Just like a musician who takes the risk and walks out on to a stage to play some of the most complicated music in the world for people who may or may not appreciate it.  A cop goes out in to the public every day and tries to protect the public by solving cases for a public who often do not celebrate him.  Unlike you, he rarely gets credit, or added pay or press coverage.  It takes both brains and backbone to do his job.”
When she’d finished, it was Mike’s turn to blush ever so slightly as he stared at the marble tile that met the end of his shoe.  Maureen busted out in a fit of tipsy laughter.  “You’ve lost this one, Your Honor.  Better give them what they came here for.”  A few minutes later, Mike and Elizabeth were standing outside in the crisp, early evening air, empty handed.
Elizabeth laughed.  “It’s been a while since a set of parents have thrown me out of my boyfriend’s house,” she said sarcastically.  She reached out with her knitted, woolen mitten and grabbed his hand.  “I’m really sorry.”
“Dear God,” Mike laughed.  “For what?  You just bested one of the toughest judges in Oakland County and you’re sorry?  Besides, he’s hiding something.”
“I’m sorry for you.  It must have been a terrible childhood.”
“If only I’d known you back then.  I could have hired you to be my body guard.”  They both smirked.
            “Drive me home?” she asked.
“Wasn’t there something about you buying me dinner if I stayed through your experiment?”
“I just bested your father and you expect me to buy you dinner?  I hate to tell you this, but you’re kind of bad at this,” she teased.
“My redeeming qualities make up for it,” Mike argued.
“Really?  There’s redemption at the end of this crap evening?”
Without answering, Mike put his hand on the small of her back and pulled her towards him.  He brushed the wisps of her hair blowing in the crisp air.  Before Elizabeth could worry if Judge Flannery was watching from the full length window, Mike leaned in and kissed her.  She returned his kiss; feeling the heat travel down her neck as her heart raced.  They kissed until they both pulled away, slightly breathless.
“I’ve never been much for faith and redemption but you might just make me a believer,” Elizabeth swooned.

Mike rubbed the end of his nose near her ear.  “There’s a very strenuous conversion process,” he teased.  “I think we might need to start tonight.”

Interview with Michele Roger and M. M. Genet
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
The characters in The Harpist came to visit my dreams about a year ago.  It’s the same with all the characters in all of my books. In my dream, I’m asleep in a large room surrounded by glass walls.  The characters come and gently rap on the glass the first night. Each night, they become more insistent to tell me their story.  If I’m swamped with my day job, they sometimes become angry and turn the dream into a nightmare. I’ve learned to take time to get up, write an outline and let the characters give me the gist of the story.  Then, as I write, they fill in the details. Hence, I imagine the answer to your question in that the characters are in control for the first letter I type on the page.

Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
They say that there are no new stories, just retellings in different forms.  Maybe that’s true but I don’t know any other romance like the one between Detective Mike Flannery and Harpist Elizabeth O’Toole. To solve a double murder, he has to rely on her to gather information in the world of the dead by channeling through her harp.  Meanwhile, Mike uses science, forensics and guts to gather clues among the living as well as protect Elizabeth. The Harpist is hair raising, page turning and all the while; the reader (and writer) are cheering that this couple, who’ve been through so much, can end up together in the end.
Have you written any other books that are not published?
Currently, I’m working on a young adult sci-fi/fantasy called, “An Agent for the Orchestra.”  It’s about a young woman who slips into different worlds and realities to steal pieces of music that have changed the corse of history for the worse.  Her pet bird, Pizz (as in Pizzicato) as well as her other friends are entirely mechanical, giving it a steampunk feel. So far, she has a secret crush on a coworker who is half human, half Griffin.
Pen or type writer or computer?
A smattering.  Leather-bound notebook and pen near the bed for outlines and notes, which later goes into a computer or my iPhone.

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
For years, I’ve written horror as Michele Roger and only recently switched to romance, writing under the pen name M. M. Genet.  Most paranormal romance, from what I’ve read are romance writers who dabble in the scarier aspects of a story to broaden their readership.  Like all things in my life, I’ve done the opposite of everyone else. I’ve been writing horror and only now focused on the more romantic aspect of the storyline.  I think that my current fans will enjoy the new twist and I hope it will be so fresh, that new readers will give it a try.
