Book Description:

The next time you're out in public, take a moment to look around you. Each and every person you see holds wisdom in their pockets--pieces of gold they've accumulated as they walked their own unique life journey.

Within these pages, Marilyn shares some of the many pieces of gold she has received over her decade-long career. They have been offered to her during interviews, through random encounters and while facing difficult challenges. The most important? We are each unique and exactly who we are meant to be.

Are you ready to dig for gold? All you need to do is be brave, be present in the moment and be open to the possibilities--then start a conversation.

Praise for The Wisdom of Listening:

"Every life has a story and, no matter our background, we share similar hopes, dreams and fears. This book not only gives you insight into the varied lives of its subjects but, through Marilyn's reflections, shows how we each walk a similar spiritual path."

- Robbin Whachell, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Bahamas Weekly

"Marilyn shows us, through her compassionate and incisive interviews, how to grasp and link those golden moments, like sparkling prisms of light, into an animated and profound acceptance of ourselves, the people we encounter, the relationships we build, and the dreams that will set us free."

- Gabriella Contestabile, Author, Founder of Su Misura Sensory Journeys

“I was reminded we are collectively each walking our own paths, but often experience similar emotions, feelings, obstacles, challenges, triumphs, rewards and successes. We all learn as we go and we all become wiser as time passes. This is humanity. The diversity in each of us as a whole is awesome.”

- RozeMerie Cuevas, Co-Founder and Designer at JAC by Jacqueline Conoir

Interview for T's Stuff
by Marilyn R. Wilson
(www.marilynrwilson.com)

Why did you chose to write in this genre?

The type of books I write evolved from the many years I spent interviewing, so I guess the genre chose me. I have always been fascinated by people – where do they come from, how does their life differ from mine, how do they think, what are their struggles, what gives them joy? My life shifted completely during my first interview. There were constant goosebumps and I instantly knew I'd found my passion. I have been inspired, uplifted, learned self-acceptance and grown as a person simply by listening to the stories of others. When I shifted from writing short magazine articles to books where I could offer these stories in greater depth, I chose the genre and categories that best fit the focus of my books.

What are the challenges you faced starting your career as a writer at a later age?

Stepping into a career in writing after being out of the work force for several years, and with no relevant degree or experience behind me, was sheer hard work.  No one was waiting with open arms saying, “Marilyn, we're so glad you're here.” There weren't even doors to open. I had to build my own doors and it took a bit of imagination to figure out how. We also live in a society that tends focus on youth. When I started out co-owning a fashion magazine, I was often the only woman my age in the room at events. I remember once being asked to step out of a group of mostly 20 somethings at a photo op wall so media could get the shot they wanted.  However, nothing can hold back someone who is determined. I simply focus on the doors that are open to me, look for new and innovative approaches to marketing and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Was the writing process any different the second time around?

Absolutely.  While writing my first book I was filled with terrible self-doubt.  What should have taken six months took 18, and I only crossed the finish line because of the incredible support I received. Writing a book filled with mini biographies can also be more technical as you are writing from notes. Feedback and requested changes come in from the interviewee, my publisher and my editor. My second book was a passion project. In it I shared my personal journey as an interviewer along with some of the wonderful bits of wisdom handed to me over the years.  There were no notes to look at. I simply had a list of chapter titles. The words poured out of me in a torrent and I had most of it written in just three weeks. It was a joyful experience.

However, there was a downside.  When you write slowly and carefully with lots of feedback, the editing process is usually is easy. When the words pour out onto the page, the editing process can be lot more difficult as you have to find order in the chaos. And that proved very true in this case.

As an avid  lifelong reader, is there one book that stands out? Why?

I love books of almost all genres.  My childhood love for science fiction has never gone away, but I also love mystery, intrigue, political thrillers and easy read chic lit.  Every time I leave on holiday, I load at least 15 books in my ancient Sony e-reader. Over the years, though, one book still rises to the top for me. It's called the Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.  It's set in the future where pandemics are always a threat and time travel is used in universities for historical purposes only.

In this book, the technician running the time machine is getting seriously ill and accidentally sends a young female researcher back to the wrong place in time. She arrives just before the Black Death hits the small community she takes refuge. Fortunately her inoculations protect her, but she struggles to protect and care for those around her.  In the future, we follow the panic, fear and growing restrictions as a possible pandemic breaks out. It is a fabulous five star book that I consumed from start to finish.

Why this book stands out is because I read it in 2003 just a few months before the SARS epidemic hit hard in Toronto. People from the area were banned from cruise ships; the airport was a ghost town; flights in and our were cancelled; visiting tourist cancelled their travel plans to the city; concerts were cancelled;  restaurants were empty; and people wore masks on the streets. The parallels were startling. I was astounded at how a fiction book I read only a few months earlier had somehow come alive in the news – well except the time travel.

What's next for you as an author?

I have two books in the works and several more on the drawing board. And every time I turn around another idea pops into my head. Will I get them all written? In all honesty I do not know.  I will write until I feel like I've finished and then I'll look around for what's next. Life is an exciting adventure with new things to explore every step of the way. I never know when my life will turn left and I'll decide to take another leap into the unknown.

Galactic Mandate: A Radical Cause by M.R. Richardson

Galactic
Mandate: A Radical Cause
by
M.R. Richardson
Genre:
SciFi, Space Opera

The
galaxy is in turmoil. The two main powers, the Acolyte Empire and the
Clone Defense Force, vie for supremacy.

Caught
in between are the weaker Galactic Planetary League and independent
planets, pawns to be used and discarded in the greater game. The
peace of the galaxy rests on a powder keg…and the fuse is about to
be lit.

As
the son of the Acolyte Emperor God-Reign, Devante lives a life of
power and luxury that few can fathom.

Since
childhood, he has devoted his life to one thing: freeing the clone
slaves of the CDF and banning the practice of cloning throughout the
galaxy. But he is about to uncover a secret that goes to the heart of
the empire he loves and serves, one that will set him on a course of
vengeance and destruction that will shake the galaxy to its
core.

Against
this backdrop of war, treachery, and intrigue, Galactic Mandate tells
an epic saga of god-emperors and assassins, spies and queens,
princesses and slaves.

The
lives of all will be irrevocably changed as Devante embraces his
destiny—for when empires collide, no one is safe, and there is no
place in the galaxy to hide.

Prologue
A clear, simulated sky covered the dome, its fake sun feeling just as warm as any real one.
Insects buzzed around, birds chirped, and the tropical bio-dome was full of life. Devante, a timid
boy, sat near his father, Reign, waiting for the hover car to arrive. It wasn’t long before an
immense tank-like vehicle pulled up, loaded with all the hunting gear they required.
“Take this shotgun,” Reign ordered. Looking down, he saw Devante’s eyes raised with concern.
“It will get the job done quickly. Trust me. You don’t want this to linger on.”
Devante stopped inspecting the gun and jumped aboard the hovering SUV. Then they were off
on their journey to complete the hunt.
About forty-five minutes passed while they tracked broken branches, searching for their prey.
Frustrated at not finding anything, the driver called out, “We can always call it a day. There’ll be
plenty of hunting to do tomorrow.”
“Hell no,” yelled Reign. “I paid good money for this. We get this done or we stay out here.”
Devante felt his sense of relief fade away at his father’s words. Suddenly, a bush shook, and the
driver fired at it. Laser fire scorched the air as he took two quick shots.
The entire party set out on foot, rushing after their quarry. Devante quickly outpaced his father,
following close behind the driver, who was an expert tracker. Soon, they heard a human voice
up ahead shouting, “Ahh!” This was followed by a thud. Suddenly, a rock struck the driver’s
face, and he smacked against the ground with another thud.
Devante looked down, his eyes focused on the sight before him. His mouth curled down in a
frown, and his eyes watered. The emotions flooding through him made his skin crawl with
horror. An exact copy of himself stared back, equally shocked.

The firm hands of his father came to rest on his shoulders. “Take the shot, son.”

When a Brazilian industrialist hires the R-Group, the world's most elite information-gathering unit to track the disappearance of his daughter - a dangerous - but quiet hunt begins. But just finding her doesn't mean all will be well. The team in Switzerland follows the leads from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean, but the data trail is leading nowhere. Sometimes the most important clues come from unlikely sources.

By chance, two members of the elite team vacationing in Mexico cross paths with Carlos and Juan's fly-by-night operation. Cloaking their "moving business" from satellite surveillance, their unique talent for relocating drug lords targeted by the Mexican authorities, along with their cash, gold, artwork and other assets, was legendary. These are Bad Boys, so-called entrepreneurs, whom even the most generous observer would question the legality of their business model.

Can the R-Group assemble the pieces of the puzzle without international consequences? Will the brothers stop running outside the law long enough to do the right thing? Can you hide from your past and still enjoy the present? Is the heiress hiding in plain sight or gone forever? And can the brothers rein in their contempt for societal rules and leave behind the sweet deals long enough to save a life?

The Enigma Rising continues the award-winning Breakfield and Burkey's series, overcoming opportunistic cyber-crime in the high-stakes world of information brokering in the 21st century. With its strong cast of characters, this engaging techno-thriller of lost-and-found - and lost again - will take you on an incredible journey into the dark side of technology.

Breakfield is a renowned technology solutions architect with 25+ years of experience in security, hybrid data/telecom environments, and unified communications enjoys leveraging his professional skills in these contemporary TechnoThriller stories. His love of World War II history from multiple viewpoints, extensive world travel, and cultural exchanges are a part of his DNA. Charles’ love of wine tastings, cooking, and Harley riding has found ways into the nine books of The Enigma Series. Burkey is a renowned customer experience professional, she is adept at initiating business solutions optimizing existing technology architecture to positively impact business outcomes. Her 25+ years in technology and business has allowed her to be a featured speaker on customer experience, subject matter expert, interviewer, instructor, and author of technology documents, as well as creator of the award winning stories within The Enigma Series. They find it interesting to use aspects of today’s technology that people are actually incorporate into their daily lives. They will openly claim this experience and knowledge of people is a perfect way to create these adult good guy/bad guy stories. Relevant technology is combined with travel, romance, intrigue, mystery, and humor design for each book to be enjoyed alone or in sequence. Reviewers have positively compared Breakfield and Burkey to the works of Tom Clancy and Clive Custer which are some of their influencers.
The nine books currently in the series include The Enigma Factor, Rising, Ignite, Wraith, Stolen, Always, Gamers, Broker, and Dragon have received awards individually as a series, and audio books. They have also created some award winning short stories including one for The Enigma Chronicles focused on how one of the founding family was fractured due to the greed for information superiority.

Q& A with Authors Breakfield & Burkey- Part One
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • When we decided to venture down the path of audiobook production it began as an information gathering activity. Neither of us had listened to audiobooks, but our kids were saying it was the easiest way to multitask. Then one of our friends indicated they were unable to read our stories they were ADAH and that we should record them. Burkey attended an author event and spoke to some folks about their offering of audiobook production, but the cost was so high we avoided for another year.
    • We had another friend who wanted to narrate our first book and tried, to produce several chapters. We really liked her interpretation, but she had not used a production facility. ACX tested the content and it sadly failed the needed sound quality levels.
    • Then we crossed paths with an expert in both narration and with creating audiobooks, Richard Rieman, who explained the process of finding a good narrator, the different ways to pay for the process, and approaches we might take. We listened to auditions and secured a renowned narrator, though we did not recognize that at the time. Again, we still had not listened to a full book via audible. The book was produced and over time we listened to our story being told one chapter at a time. We did not realize the finer points of how to secure changes, tools we should have provided, and the time it might take. It was a huge learning experience for us.
    • We had hoped we would be able to use the narrator for the subsequent stories, but we found ourselves at the cost prohibitive point. The ROI just did not work for us, so we had to find a new narrator. With book 6 currently in production, we are still learning how to help and support our narrator, Derek Shoales, who is doing a fabulous job of bringing our characters and stories to a new dimension.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Any writing can be translated into a great audiobook format with the right narrator, open discussion/exchanges between the authors and timely feedback. Only a picture book with no words would have an issue. Burkey has started to listen to audiobooks and her appreciation for the effort continues to grow.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • When we started writing and getting reviews we were hoping for the big screen with our series, like a Netflix, or Amazon series. We write about applied technology because it is what we know from our professional background. In answer to your question, we deliberately wrote each story with the idea in mind that we would port it to another media type.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • We loaded up a sample of our story into ACX and solicited for narrators to essentially audition. We listened carefully to the way they told the story and selected the one we thought would bring the best voice to our series. When you have a character universe of 160+ like ours, it is important to make sure your voice actor can properly cover the range. This isn’t like reading to your young ones at bedtime but really a narrator who can become the character(s) and deliver an enriched story to the listener.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • With the first book we did not work closely enough. We were still new to the process and changes which we would have liked seemed daunting. Without directions or author notes to guide, different narrators will deliver the work in their own ways.
    • After the first one we have started to provide pronunciations on words, insights to the characters, and locations as well as catching the time in a given recording where we would like a change. This has made the process into an amazing partnership. We feel like our narrator is part of our team.
    • You should know that not everything easily translates from the written word to a compelling audible. Derek caught a conversion problem when taking it to the audible format that we completely missed. Look for that skill in your narrator.

EXCERPT:

I break off a piece of raspberry tart, with a crust as light as sunshine, and slide it into the pocket of my caftan. My mouth goes dry in spite of the sweet tang that’s about to burst over my tongue.

Because the hidden bite’s not for me. It’s for my best friend, Astana, and if the royal guards catch me stealing food for a colonist, I could be thrown into the Red Cell Prison. Our laws are clear: actual food, as opposed to nutrition pills, must be reserved for those who can utilize it best.

I shove the rest of the tart into my mouth. It breaks upon contact, littering crumbs across the silver shuttle floor. I’m so nervous the dessert tastes like congealed space dust and raspberries, but I chew and swallow as if nothing’s wrong. As if there isn’t a smooshed-up pie staining the inside of my pocket.

Did anyone see me hide the bite?

All around the Banquet Room, the Aegis dig into their mid-afternoon snack. Pecan-encrusted squash, double-mashed garlic potatoes, barbecued tofu drizzled with a blackberry-port reduction. They sit twenty per table, at sheets of metal which would sag if they weren’t doubly reinforced. Their silverware clinks together in a high, tinny melody, replacing the conversation that might have occurred back on Earth, where eating was partly social instead of wholly functional.

On our new planet, Dion, no Aegis talks during the first twenty minutes of a meal. It would be a waste, since more food can be consumed before the stomach has a chance to feel full. And an Aegis has only one goal: to consume as many nutrients as possible. We have to, in order to take in enough sustenance for the rest of the colony.

I’m about to finish what’s left of the tart when a hand closes over my elbow.

My heart stutters. So it comes to this. After training all my life to eat for my people, I’m caught over a piece of raspberry pie.

Pellets of sweat break out on my neck. I turn to my captor, the excuses ready on my lips. It’s just a single bite. My best friend’s been so down lately. I just want to bring her a little excitement, a little joy. Is that so wrong?

The words melt in my mouth. Because it’s not a royal guard who has a hold of me. It’s my older sister.

“Sweet before savory?” Blanca asks, moving the hand from my elbow and onto her hip. “Is that your secret, Vela? You eat a round of dessert before the main course?”

Of course not. I’m only eating this tart because it gives me an excuse to be near the dessert buffet. But Blanca doesn’t have to know that.

“You got me,” I say. “Sweet and savory foods fill different mental compartments, you know. You can still eat chocolate cake, even though you’re full of ramen noodles and pan-fried dumplings—”

“Save it.” Blanca arches her back, jutting out her food baby. Fifteen minutes from now, after she pays a visit to the Transfer Room, her stomach will deflate once again, but my sister’s always been one to show off her roundness, however temporary. “I don’t need your strategies to be named Top Aegis.”

I’m a shoo-in for the top prize this year. Blanca knows it, I know it. Half of our Eating class has placed bets on it. If I keep eating the way I have for the next two days, no one will even come close.

Vela Kunchai, Top Aegis. I can taste it. Hot and satisfying, like a tray of lasagna with a bubbling soy cheese crust. I’d stretch my stomach lining into gauze to make sure it’s me. My sister, unfortunately, feels the same way.
