Lala
wakes up and feels rotten, but she's not sure why. She's not sick, and the sun
is shining. Lala is blah-la.

She
stomps downstairs for breakfast.

Stomp,
stomp, stomp.

My Review:
5*
Lala wakes up in a  bad mood. She doesn't know why. Her mother is determined to turn her Blah day into a good day. She starts with a happy breakfast then moves on to a happy lunch. When neither work she comes up with a plan to flip an imaginary coin. Tails is a blah day, she tells Lala to flip the coin over in her mind to heads.

This was a very short story and would be perfect for a Blah-la day for any child in the morning when it is looking like a bad day. Teia Kayne has done a wonderful job with this book, it even brought a smile to my face. This is a picture book with vivid and bright illustrations all the way through it. The illustrations are by Goran Vitanovic.

As the daughter of a librarian, Tela Kayne grew up reading countless
literary works of all genres in quiet corners of the local library. She
developed the love of writing at an early age, penning theatrical
productions that were performed in the family living room for an
audience of loved ones. She officially began her creative career as a
young actress in Atlanta, having appeared on stage in a variety of roles
including Puck of Midsummer Night’s Dream and Alice in Alice in
Wonderland.

After graduating college Summa Cum Laude from the University of
Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and working a short
stint in the “real world,” she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career
in film. After securing her Screen Actor’s Guild membership through
appearances on television shows like G vs E, The Parkers and Get Real as
well as films like Down to You, Almost Famous, and Disney’s The Kid,
she decided to garner more behind-the-camera experience. She secured
internships at Scott Rudin Productions, one of Hollywood’s most prolific
and demanding producers and Mostow Lieberman Productions (U-571) at
Universal Studios. She soon accepted a paid position with executive
producer Chris Sievernich and discovered her love of screenplay
development, running the coverage department for Kinowelt USA and
assisting in the development of projects like Nurse Betty, The Wedding
Planner and Welcome to Collinwood. After several years of working in
Hollywood, she returned home to Atlanta in 2001 to focus on a career in
strategic marketing.

As president and founder of The Virtue Agency, an integrated content
development and marketing agency, Tela has spent the last fifteen years
writing content and maximizing brand exposure and engagement for
clients. She has authored articles that appear on MarketWatch (WSJ),
Yahoo! Finance, MNN.com, EWG.org, and HealthyChild.org. She is also
entering into the literary world with the release of LaLa Feels Blah-La, Book 1 of her debut children’s series, LaLa’s World.

Praise for Trial on Mount Koya

“A page-turning and atmospheric historical mystery that beautifully melds fascinating Japanese history with a cleverly constructed mystery reminiscent of And Then There Were None—if the famous Agatha Christie mystery had been set in medieval Japan on a sacred mountaintop during a snowstorm.” —Gigi Pandian, USA Today–bestselling author of the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mysteries

“Susan Spann is up front in saying that Trial on Mount Koya is an homage to Agatha Christie. Believe me, she does the great Dame Agatha proud. This excellent entry in Spann’s series of Hiro Hattori mysteries offers plenty of esoteric clues and red herrings that are fun to chase. Along the way, she even does Christie one better, giving readers a fascinating glimpse of life and religion in feudal Japan. This is a book sure to please Spann’s growing legion of fans as well as anyone who loves the work of Agatha Christie.” —William Kent Krueger, Edgar® Award–winning author of Sulfur Springs

About the Author

Susan Spann is the award-winning author of the Hiro Hattori mystery novels, featuring ninja detective Hiro Hattori and Portuguese Jesuit Father Mateo.

Susan began reading precociously and voraciously from her preschool days in Santa Monica, California, and as a child read everything from National Geographic to Agatha Christie. In high school, she once turned a short-story assignment into a full-length fantasy novel (which, fortunately, will never see the light of day).

A yearning to experience different cultures sent Susan to Tufts University in Boston, where she immersed herself in the history and culture of China and Japan. After earning an undergraduate degree in Asian Studies, Susan diverted to law school. She returned to California to practice law, where her continuing love of books has led her to specialize in intellectual property, business and publishing contracts.

Susan’s interest in Japanese history, martial arts, and mystery inspired her to write the Shinobi Mystery series featuring Hiro Hattori, a sixteenth-century ninja who brings murderers to justice with the help of Father Mateo, a Portuguese Jesuit priest.

Susan is the 2015 Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers’ Writer of the Year, a former president of the Northern California Chapter of Mystery Writers of America and a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime (National and Sacramento chapters), the Historical Novel Society, and the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. She is represented by literary agent Sandra Bond of Bond Literary Agency.

When not writing or representing clients, Susan enjoys traditional archery, martial arts, photography, and hiking. She lives in Sacramento with her husband and two cats, and travels to Japan on a regular basis.

Interview with Susan Spann

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?
A little of both. I write from an outline, so my novels always start with a solid structure. Once I start writing, however, the characters tend to take over and the story takes on a life of its own. Almost every novel I’ve written includes a character I didn’t plan for or expect, who appeared as a surprise in the drafting process. Each of those characters ended up being instrumental to the story—in Trial on Mount Koya, it’s even a character who will reappear in future books—but I had no idea they even existed, much less that I needed them, during the outline phase.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
When a blizzard strikes a sacred mountain, and a killer begins murdering Buddhist priests and posing his victims as the Kings of Hell, master ninja Hiro Hattori and Portuguese Jesuit Father Mateo must stop the killer before he completes his grisly council of the dead.
If you like page-turning suspense, medieval Japan, or mysteries that involve a ticking clock, high stakes, and intricate mysteries, I think you’ll love Trial on Mount Koya.
Have you written any other books that are not published?
Claws of the Cat, was the first novel in my Hiro Hattori/Shinobi mystery series, and my first published book, but I wrote four other manuscripts before I found my agent and signed my first publishing deal. They remain unpublished, and for the moment I think they’ll stay that way. They were great learning vehicles, but they’d need a lot of revision and editing to get them ready for publication, and I’m too busy writing Hiro and Father Mateo’s adventures (at least for now).
Pen or typewriter or computer?
Computer and Alphasmart Neo! I write the first draft of every novel on an Alphasmart Neo, which is basically a portable, lightweight keyboard with a screen that shows only four lines of text. It doesn’t connect to the Internet and it’s difficult to edit on, which minimizes distractions. Once I have a completed draft, I download it from the Neo to my MacBook, and do the rest of my editing on the computer, in MS Word.
Also, I don’t add chapter breaks in my novels until at least the fourth draft. Until then, it’s all a single, unbroken document.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
First and most importantly: thank you for spending your valuable time sharing Hiro and Father Mateo’s adventures with me. I’m grateful to every reader, and every fan—you are the reason why I write these books and share these stories, and it means a lot to me that people enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing.

And second: If you like Japan, I hope you’ll stop by my blog (www.susanspann.com) where I’m sharing photos and stories from my ongoing extended research and mountain climbing trip in Japan. I’m spending the summer of 2018 climbing mountains all across Japan, in an attempt to climb all hundred of the Nihon Hyakumeizan (100 Famous Mountains of Japan)!

She was raised to be beautiful,
nothing more. And then the rules changed . . .

In icy Dasnaria, rival realm to the Twelve Kingdoms, a woman’s role
is to give pleasure, produce heirs, and question nothing. But a plot
to overthrow the emperor depends on the fate of his eldest daughter.
And the treachery at its heart will change more than one carefully
limited life . . .
The Gilded Cage
Princess Jenna has been raised in supreme luxury—and ignorance.
Within the sweet-scented, golden confines of the palace seraglio,
she’s never seen the sun, or a man, or even learned her numbers.
But she’s been schooled enough in the paths to a woman’s power.
When her betrothal is announced, she’s ready to begin the
machinations that her mother promises will take Jenna from ornament
to queen.
But the man named as Jenna’s husband is no innocent to be cozened
or prince to charm. He’s a monster in human form, and the horrors
of life under his thumb are clear within moments of her wedding vows.
If Jenna is to live, she must somehow break free—and for one born
to a soft prison, the way to cold, hard freedom will be a dangerous
path indeed…

My name is Crimson Syn,
not really, but what fun is it to use my real name. Instead I’ll
use my inner goddess’ name, it’s much more fun that way. I
grew up in New York City where I had a wonderful education, loving
parents and awesome friends. What more could a girl ask for?
I
started writing at the age of sixteen. The first romance I read was
Stephanie Laurens’ Devil’s Bride. Since then I have been
influenced by dozens of flourishing romance authors and even more
dashing and daring rogues. I must say it, but Fifty Shades was not my
first erotic romance, nor did it influence me to start writing them.
If you’ve never read Mary Balogh, Elizabeth Hoyt, Lisa Kleypas,
Bertrice Small or A.N. Roquelaure’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy, then
you’re missing out. Those were my sweet introductions to erotic
romance, and boy were they hot.
So
here I am, after reading so many wonderful stories, I have too many
sinful tales of my own not to share. I like my alphas rough and
possessive, and I have no shame in saying it or writing it. I had
delightfully wicked teachers growing up, their books took me to new
worlds and brought me new loves. So, I want to do the same for you. I
want to indulge my readers in those steamy reads that will send them
into the arms of dangerous alphas and deliciously sexy rogues,
without leaving the confines of their nice warm bed. If I am able to
entice your inner goddesses, then I have done my job and I am
satisfied.

Twelfth Floor by Monica Corwin blitz

Twelfth Floor
Monica Corwin
Publication date: July 3rd 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
This isn’t your high school Shakespeare.
Violet Cesario fled the shipwreck of her father’s company to Illyria Pharmaceuticals. As the newly appointed, and untried CFO, the board gave her thirty days to prove her worth. Thirty days to bring up the numbers. Thirty days to fend off the advances of her secretary, Olivia. Thirty days of hiding her submissiveness inside a dominant’s shell.
Thirty days gets complicated when Duke Orsino, the CEO, offers her a deal. Help him win over Olivia and he will sway the board in Violet’s favor. If she agrees to teach him the games behind dominance and submission Violet’s career will be made. As the play turns more and more true to life, the lines blur between fantasy and reality. Can Violet hide her desire for Duke long enough for him to woo Olivia? And if he succeeds can Violet endure it for the sake of her career?
EXCERPT:

Chief Financial Officers didn’t last long at Illyria. Handling billions of dollars seemed to weigh on even those who chose the profession as a career. The appointment of Violet Cesario had gone against the board’s request. I was the one who selected her, despite the impressive and complete collapse of her last company.
However, the research I conducted on the matter showed more than gross negligence on the part of the company’s owner. I wasn’t going to hold that against her, but the board did, and would, if she didn’t survive her first thirty days. They’d try to hold it against me too. Until I’d not so subtly remind them of the last time they went to war with me.
My question, or goading, didn’t cause even a flicker of anxiety to cross her features. When purposefully hiring new executives, I pushed them, pounded them into the ground, and walked across the ashes of who they were before they came to my company. All this in preparation to make them the best at their job. And yet, my usual tactics didn’t seem to faze her. Not the show I put on as she entered the building, not my goading…which made her more than interesting to me. I’d met far weaker men than the woman sitting across from me with the ice in her eyes.
The board controlled my CFO position, until their last incompetent choice lost us a quarter-million-dollar asset. Now, the board submitted to my selection. And I would prove my choices were irrefutable. If not God damn impeccable. “You’re aware of the thirty-day mandate the board put on your employment?”
She shifted her legs, carefully sliding one long lean calf over her other knee. Not even stockings in the way of her smooth skin’s passage. In any one else, I would have considered it a seduction technique, but not this woman. As if her body language screamed two different things at once: ‘come closer’ and ‘back the hell off’. Or maybe that was the point. Draw them in only to crush them under her four inch heels.
“I’m not sure if that was a question or a statement.” She paused briefly before continuing. “The probationary period is a clause in the contract I signed.” Her tone called me a bastard in the nicest way I’d ever heard it. I loved a little fire in a woman. Even more so in a woman forging an intimate relationship with my money. By the second Violet was accruing more respect than I’d been preparing to dole out.
“Of course,” I said, mimicking her caustic tone. Why did I need a reaction from her so badly?
She gave me nothing but a careful blink.
Maybe working with Violet might prove more fun than I originally estimated. I didn’t interview her personally, and there were no pictures with her file, so when I arrived, I expected a thirty-something powerlifting champion in a pinstriped suit. Violet had almost a delicacy about her inviting wariness. Meeting her in person, I wanted her to do well, for her benefit—not only mine. “I’m here to tell you how you will succeed in your goal.”
A line formed in the middle of her forehead as she considered my words. “And why would you do that? Isn’t it in your best interest to choose the right person for the job, not the make the person fit the job?”
“Usually, but I went to bat to hire you. Challenging the board with my choice. If you succeed, it looks good for me, and it keeps me from having to vet and hire yet another CFO.” I didn’t reveal my ongoing clash with the board about new executive hires. Or that the probationary period resulted from my pushing them about bringing her specifically.
She forced out a controlled sigh, and I watched her for any other outward reactions to me, the conversation, the thirty-day time limit on her employment. Absolutely nothing. Incredible.
“I can see the logic in that.”
I glanced over at Olivia to see if she got a reading on Violet that I missed. Olivia was better than most when it came to insight about other women.
Or maybe I just wanted a stolen moment to watch her. The only woman who eluded me. To be fair, I’d never put in much of the chase to catch her.

Even dressed for work, without the skintight dresses and sky-high heels, she looked like an idea.
Something yet for me to discover.
At the club we both attended, secretly on my part, of course, she always looked even better, more like a revelation.
Something I knew all along.
With her head bent over the notepad she held in one hand, she scribbled in quick, precise strokes. I realized Violet had been talking while I’d been gawking. I glanced up to find a silent Violet studying me with her head cocked to the side.
Between seconds, between heartbeats, between her look and my silence…she knew.
We stared each other down, Olivia completely oblivious to the growing tension stretched taut between Violet and me. A tension built precariously on a shared secret.
Violet repeated what I’d missed. “And what did you suggest, Duke, to preserve my place here?”
My name thrown in a gauntlet was not something I could ignore. I narrowed my eyes at her. I didn’t enjoy puzzles. And the five minutes I’d spent with Violet told me she’d be far more difficult to decipher than most.
“Olivia,” I said, not even looking at her, still grappling in the strangest battle of wills with Violet. “Will you give Ms. Cesario and me a moment?”

 Excerpt
His impending death hung in the air like thick smog, smothering everything in its path, obscuring a parade of ups and downs, the unevenness of thrills and chills that defined his life’s existence. It was eerie and scary, but also rather comforting, much like being in a warm bed on a cold night, like shivering while being filled with excitement at what was going to happen next. The news could very easily have been broadcast to those of his past and present, but he had made certain that all the speakers had been turned to mute. He had made the firm decision to meet his destiny without any chance of intervention by anyone. He was all alone in this, his final act.

The hotel room was a bit dark with all the lights switched off, but outside the window the sky was as bright blue as Cinnamon’s eyes had been. At least that’s the way it looked to Clint Westerly. For some reason his mind had suddenly flashed on Cinnamon of all things. Cinnamon had been the perfect cat. Paul Newman eyes, he had called them, which sparkled in the sunlight and glistened in the dark. Such beautiful eyes. Such a wonderful cat. Such a pity that eighteen years was all the time he had had to frolic through the world. Cinnamon had been the perfect cat, the perfect companion. The little cat had been much more than a friend. He had actually been like a son to both him and Sheila. Anybody who knew them would surely concur. That’s just the way things were in their wonderful world.

Their world. What a crock! What world? Everything gone now, vanished, disintegrated into thin air, the tiniest particles vaporized into non-existence. Not a remnant remaining except for the tortured thoughts brought about by that one memory that refused to disappear no matter how painfully the ever increasing toll that it took on his physical body and on his ever working brain, overwhelming him in the process, the remembrance bringing him to his knees, shutting out all other thoughts as well as the rest of the world. Darkness and clouds made up the present, and there would be no future. How could there be? Not with the ever painful memory tearing at his innards, wreaking havoc with the person he had once been. Obliterating the world he had once known. Snuffing out all that he had loved, all that had made up the world in which he had once so happily lived.

He took a big swig from the large snifter of XO Remy Martin he held in his right hand, the cognac warming his throat at it snaked its way into his stomach, his left hand resting on the windowsill. There was so much beauty in the world. Just look at the trees gently blowing in the breeze. Look at how the leaves seem to glisten as they sway in the gentle breeze. See how the clouds out on the horizon take on the never-ending shapes of the imagination, slowly changing shapes and colors in an endless kaleidoscope of wondrous features, a galloping antelope, a smiling child, a mighty elm. All one had to do is look, and wonderful scenes could be seen and imagined, constantly evolving from one glorious image to the next.

Remember the giggles of little tots’ faces, the tail wagging of puppies, the sound of rain on the roof, the softness of a newly made bed, the warmth of a fire on a winter night, the smell of coffee in the morning, the moonlit sky, a beautiful sunset, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the first gulp of water on a thirsty day, the move-it-forward power of a smile from a total stranger.

Yes, life could be so good…so why did it have to end this way? He had had it all, the most wonderful wife in the world, a job he loved, the house of their dreams, and the financial know-how that had provided them the opportunity to partake in the pleasures that good food, drink, and leisure activities of their own choosing afforded the most fortunate, which, of course they had been. Laughter had reigned in their little world. It had been dancing, prancing, and singing all the way, not caring who was looking or who saw. It just did not matter. All that mattered was that they had each other, and, of course, little Cinnamon.

SNEAK PEEKS:
Keagan

“In this world, loving someone is a weakness.” He let his fingers trace my chin, “I’ve always been strong. I need to be strong.” His voice was a whisper as his eyes fell to my lips.

I didn’t break my gaze from his, “You are strong.” I wanted to say so much more but was too lost in the way his eyes told me he wanted everything I did.

He leaned in so close that I could feel his warm breath mix with mine. He placed one hand on the wall behind me, “You make me weak.”

“I want to be the first person you kiss under the stars, and I think you do too.”

He didn’t wait for my answer, he was right, he knew everything about me.
“Is it too hard for you to hear that I prayed every day of my life since I left that we’d be brought back together again, only when it actually happened, I don’t have you at all?”
