The King Is Dead by Al Burke

The
King Is Dead
by
Al Burke

Genre:
Epic Fantasy

Etruvia
has known peace for twenty years. But this time of peace has brought
corruption and greed. The nobility has taken control, and the
memories of great victories of old have faded. Crime is rife and the
once proud people are little more than peasants. As a great evil
rises in the desolate north, can a forgotten king and an embittered
former war hero wake a nation from its stupor and build an army
strong enough to give it a fighting chance?

Excerpt:

Being king wasn’t exactly as Eric had imagined. His memory of his parents was
more akin to dreams than solid points of reference, but he had been very young
when they died, a mere six years old, and was now entering his fortieth year. The
succeeding thirty-four years became increasingly boring and frustrating in equal
amounts. While dealing with affairs of state was hardly something a heartbroken
child should have to deal with, as the years went by, Eric had received no
training in what should have been important matters, and instead, considerable
efforts were made to keep him from attending to what was his kingdom.
Eric’s ministers were no doubt enjoying their own power, and there were
rumours around the castle and even down in the city that they intended to usurp
him in the name of democracy. While Eric actually appreciated the idea of
democracy―thankfully he had been well schooled in other areas―what his
“advisers” were practising hardly fit in with the dictionary definition of the idea.
They preferred lining their own pockets and favouring the wealthy over those
less fortunate. There was no doubt that his father, who had come from a long line
of respected regents, was turning in his grave with regularity.
Eric, however, failed to replicate his father’s charisma and steely will that had
benefited the kingdom greatly when it came to matters of diplomacy or trade
negotiation. Whereas the mighty King Cedric had had his finger in all the
country’s pies, running it as he saw fit―which had been admittedly
effective―Eric had been hampered by his advisers from an early age, and by the
time he was old enough to sit in court, he had been roundly discouraged for so
long that he did as he was told.
Of course, this bothered Eric, who didn’t want to hand his beloved kingdom
over to a bunch of charlatans. He still occasionally tried to join in on matters of
state, but he was talked down at each attempt. With a lot of time to spare, Eric
spent much of his time reading and often talking late into the night with many of
the respected academics in the kingdom. The great minds supported the king, but
all felt he needed to show some resolve in order to take the seat of great prestige.
While his intellect was admirable and matched many of his predecessors,
there was one area where Eric surpassed not just every regent who had sat on the
throne before him, but possibly every person who had ever resided in the
kingdom: combat. Eric had been born at a time of great turmoil, as border battles
were an almost daily occurrence. Perhaps being born practically with a sword in
his hand helped, but Eric had grown up in a time of relative peace. Yet his
acumen with a sword, bow, or any other weapon one could name was peerless.
The king trained daily for most of the morning and reached the stage where he
could take on six soldiers while wielding just a knife, yet come out victorious
with nary a bruise. While some opined that his soldiers went easy on him, Eric
suspected that some of his more enthusiastic opponents were in fact assassins
sent by his ministry. Regardless of popular opinion, any combat veteran could
tell that the king’s ability to parry and strike bordered on superhuman, and if
there was one person who could spar with him for more than a minute, they had
yet to make themselves known.
Spending his day reading and training had given Eric a keen mind and a body
to match, and he could have had his pick of brides had politics not reigned
supreme. Instead, Eric was wed to Catherine of Genovia. They had managed to
consummate their marriage on their wedding night but never shared his bed
again. While court talk should always be taken with a pinch of salt, rumour had
it that Eric’s bed was the only one she refused to share as she ingratiated herself
with the castle staff.
Eric was no fool, and he knew that being royalty often led to a loveless
marriage. He could handle her frosty personality, but she refused to bear him a
child, which put his royal line in jeopardy. Not only did she refuse him sex, but
she worked hard to make sure that no one else could bear him a bastard child to
interfere with whatever nefarious schemes she had cooked up. Ending the
marriage was no option, as Catherine’s father was a proud man who would have
sought revenge with his seasoned army, something the peaceful Etruvians could
not boast. So, Eric had to grin and bear it. He continued to perfect his skills and
his mind in the absence of other ‘activities.’
Tiring of beating on his generally incompetent soldiers, Eric decided to seek
greater challenges, and at night he began to sneak down to town to try and help
stem the spiralling outbreak of crime. While the army was essentially the militia
too, some of the senior officers were well catered to by crime lords who seemed
to wield far more power than the king himself.
Dressing in dark clothing―not that he’d be recognised―Eric roamed the
town taking on thieves, rapists, and the other types of scum who had flourished
in the once proud city. Used to picking on hapless citizens, these criminals were
no match for Eric, and he quickly earned a name for himself as a vigilante. This
reputation earned him the respect of the honest people in the town, but the
criminal gangs and the militia worked hard to trap him, both of whom saw a loss
of profit courtesy of Eric’s crime fighting.
Villains came out in greater numbers, at least as great as they could without
being too obvious, yet Eric still sent the lucky ones running. With this
mysterious vigilante roaming the streets and upsetting the criminal apple cart, a
plan needed to be hatched to end his threat, and for the first time in his life, Eric
was able to bring people together to agree on one thing―the vigilante needed to
be dealt with.

Day Reaper The Night Blood Series #4 by Melody Johnson

Day
Reaper
The
Night Blood Series #4
by
Melody Johnson

Genre:
Paranormal Romance

On
the brink of death, Cassidy DiRocco demands that New York City’s
master of the supernatural, Dominic Lysander, transform her—reporter,
Night Blood, sister, human—into the very creature she’s feared
and fought against for months: a vampire. The pain is brutal, she
could lose the career she’s worked so hard to achieve, and her
world will never be the same. But surviving is worth any risk,
especially when it means gaining the strength to fight against
Jillian Allister, the sister who betrayed Dominic, attacked Cassidy,
and is leading a vampire uprising that will destroy all of New York
City . . .

When
she awakens, however, Cassidy realizes the cost of being transformed
might be more than she was willing to sacrifice. But if Cassidy hopes
to right the irrevocable wrongs that Jillian and her army of the
Damned have wrought on New York City, she’ll need to not only
accept her new senses, body, and cravings, but wield them in her
favor. Irresistible and enigmatic as Dominic is, he no longer has
command over the city or its vampires. Only Cassidy has the
connections to convince the humans, Day Reapers, and the few vampires
still loyal to Dominic to join forces. And maybe, if Dominic can
accept her rising power over the coven he once commanded for the past
several hundred years, the two of them together might forge a bond
more potent than history has ever known. . .

Excerpt:

Transform me into a vampire.
The words had just left my lips, more shape than sound since I still couldn’t speak without vocal cords, and Dominic Lysander, Master vampire of New York City—who had supposedly seen all, knew all, and wasn’t impressed by any of it in his four hundred and seventy-seven-year-long life—stared at me like I was an alien, like I was an otherworldly creature he’d always known probably existed, but was wholly unprepared to confront. I knew that horror-filled, struck-dumb look all too well; I’d been wearing it pretty consistently over the past several weeks, ever since Dominic had shoved me against the brick exterior of my apartment building and commanded me to look into his eyes, and my body had unwillingly obeyed. I knew that sometimes events were so devastating, both physically and mentally, that all you could do was stare blankly at the destruction and hope to God you didn’t lose your shit.
But in all his four hundred and seventy-seven years, this was not the time nor the place to lose his shit.
Use my necklace, I mouthed, both encouraging him and reminding him not to use the blood in his veins, weakened by the Leveling. I would have ripped the pendant from my necklace and raised the precious drops of his formerly powerful blood to my lips myself, but I’d lost the use of my arms. My body was numb, my awareness drifting, my vision a starburst blanket of blackness covering my face, and still, Dominic just stared.
What are you waiting for? I snapped, as much as I could snap under the circumstances.
“Another solution to present itself,” he finally admitted, looking over my injuries, the movement of his eyes darting and frantic.
I raised my eyebrows, or at least, I tried to. Cold feet?
Dominic let loose a long-suffering sigh. Some of the horror left his expression, but not all of it, and what little did leave was replaced by weary resignation. I didn’t understand his reaction—I didn’t understand him and maybe never really would, not as a human anyway. After weeks of attempting to seduce me, not only into his bed but into his coven, this should be his golden, shining moment, the pot of gold at the end of this violent, blood-soaked rainbow, but by the sick, nearly choked expression on his face, instead of bathing in his good fortune, he was drowning in it. “The temperature of my feet has little to do with this decision,” he said blandly.
I opened my mouth to correct his misunderstanding, to explain that “cold feet” was just an expression, not a literal physical discomfort, when I noticed the tilt to the scarred half of his lips. He was teasing. I was exsanguinating in an alley between East Fifty-Seventh Street and 432 Park Avenue, my vocal cords in shreds, breathing more blood than air into my lungs, and fading fast. And he was teasing.
I laughed and blood sprayed like a geyser from my esophagus. Dominic choked, coughing up physical blood from his metaphysical injuries. My injuries.
The blanket over my vision thickened, filling the gaps between starbursts. I didn’t have time to doubt my decision and consider why Dominic would hesitate—which wasn’t so much a decision as it was a last resort, and perhaps therein lay Dominic’s hesitation. I didn’t have time to convince him that my decision was more choice than he’d been given for his transformation, and if my decision was more about living than it was about a life with him, he’d have to suck up his pride and be grateful I was making this choice at all: the right choice, according to him, under different circumstances.
I didn’t even have time to catch my breath.

Eternal
Reign
The
Night Blood Series #3

THE
LEVELING

Last
week, Cassidy DiRocco had some influence over the vampires that stalk
the streets of New York City. She was never completely safe, but with
her newfound abilities as a night blood and her honed instincts as a
crime reporter, at least she had the necessary skills to
survive.

Now,
thanks to the injuries she sustained while saving her brother from a
fate worse than death, she’s lost her night blood status just as
another crime spree hits Brooklyn. Dozens of people are being
slaughtered, and each victim bears the Damned’s signature mark; a
missing heart.

Cassidy
will need the help of all her allies to survive the coming war,
including the mysterious and charismatic Dominic Lysander, Master
Vampire of New York City. But as his rival’s army threatens his
coven and his own powers weaken with the approaching Leveling, even
Dominic’s defenses might not be enough protection.

With
nothing left to lose, Cassidy must find the power inside herself to
save Dominic, his coven, their city, and survive.

Sweet
Last Drop
The
Night Blood Series #2

Trust
No One

Cassidy
DiRocco knows the dark side intimately--as a crime reporter in New
York City, she sees it every day. But since she discovered that she's
a night blood, her power and potential has led the dark right to her
doorway. With her brother missing and no one remembering he exists,
she makes a deal with Dominic Lysander, the fascinating master
vampire of New York, to find him.

Dominic
needs the help of Bex, another master vampire, to keep peace in the
city, so he sends Cassidy to a remote, woodsy town upstate to
convince her--assuming she survives long enough. A series of vicious
"animal attacks" after dark tells Cassidy there's more to
Bex and her coven than anyone's saying. That goes double for fellow
night blood Ian Walker, the tall, blond animal tracker who's supposed
to be her ally. Walker may be hot-blooded and hard-bodied, but he's
hiding something too. If Cassidy wants the truth, she'll have to
squeeze it out herself… every last drop.

The
City Beneath
The
Night Blood Series #1

As
a journalist, Cassidy DiRocco thought she had seen every depraved
thing New York City’s underbelly had to offer. But while covering
what appears to be a vicious animal attack, she finds herself drawn
into a world she never knew existed. Her exposé makes her the target
of the handsome yet brutal Dominic Lysander, the Master Vampire of
New York City, who has no problem silencing her to keep his coven's
secrets safe…

But
Dominic offers Cassidy another option: ally. He reveals she is a
night blood, a being with powers of her own, including the ability to
become a vampire. As the body count escalates, Cassidy is caught in
the middle of a vampire rebellion. Dominic insists she can help him
stop the coming war, but wary of his intentions, Cassidy enlists the
help of the charming Ian Walker, a fellow night blood. As the battle
between vampires takes over the city, Cassidy will have to tap into
her newfound powers and decide where to place her trust...

NBTM for Accidental Jesus Freak by Amber Lea Starfire

Accidental Jesus Freak
by Amber Lea Starfire

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Memoir
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In 1973, Linda was a flute player and music major at a California community college, until she met and
fell madly in love with a charismatic piano player, plunging into his world of music-making and
drug-fueled parties. When, just three weeks after their wedding, he reveals that he's been "born again,"
Linda makes the spontaneous decision to follow him into his new religion and, unwittingly, into a life of
communal living, male domination, and magical thinking.

With unflinching candor, Amber Starfire chronicles her journey as Linda Carr into the evangelical church
culture, where she gives up everything for her husband and their music ministry. But in the process, she
loses her most valuable assets: her identity and sense of self-worth. It is only when Linda returns to live
with her birth family and faces her complicated relationship with her mother that she finds new purpose
and the courage to begin to extricating herself from the limiting beliefs of her past.

Accidental Jesus Freak is the story of one woman, one marriage, and one kind of fundamentalism, but it
is also the story of the healing that is possible when we are true to ourselves. Both a cautionary tale and
celebration of personal empowerment, Accidental Jesus Freak is a powerful reminder for anyone who
seeks to live a life authentic to who they truly are.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
By spring we were behind on rent and utility payments and were running out of food. Paul was deep into
one of his depressions, so the Beulah Band wasn’t practicing or performing. Without the focus provided
by our music and without Paul’s guidance, the commune began to erode at the edges, crumbling into the
sea of reality. One by one, people drifted away, most moving back to Portland to take up residence with
family or friends. Soon there was just a core of us left: three families, including Paul and Barney’s, two
married couples without children, and a few young bachelors.
I remember quite distinctly the day we gave up. The group had exactly $20 remaining in our coffers—not
enough to pay any of our bills. Not even enough to buy food for dinner. So, in typical throw-it-to-the-wind
fashion, we traipsed up the street to the local Dairy Queen and bought $20 worth of banana splits to
share. It felt reckless and fitting to celebrate the demise of our grand communal experiment in this
fashion.
I have a polaroid taken that day outside the Dairy Queen. Fourteen adults and five children smile and
squint into the sun like one big happy family. Eric and I stand at the back of the group, round-faced in
our youth, his hand placed protectively on my arm. I remember feeling both relieved and sad. I was
tired of the strain of trying to keep food on the table, tired of the squabbling, the lack of privacy, and
feeling shut out by the men. I was ready to live like a normal married couple, just Eric and me on our
own. Yet there was a bitter-sweetness to those banana splits.
Interview with Amber Starfire
  1. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
This question doesn’t seem as though it would apply to memoir but, ironically enough, it does. There are characters in real life whose personalities are so big, they hijack everyone’s attention. So why not characters written from memory? In Accidental Jesus Freak, Eric, my husband, is certainly one of those characters. In our life together, his wants and needs, goals and desires, consumed mine — and so, in a way, his story (or rather, my story about him) sometimes jockeyed for space with mine. And Paul, Eric’s musician friend and spiritual leader was another of those characters. It was important that their characters be written in such a way that readers could feel their influence, without letting them take over the narrative. So, being in control of their characterization on the page was essential.
  1. Convince us why you feel your book is a must-read.
Accidental Jesus Freak is a must-read for any person, especially any woman, who has struggled to gain a sense of self within a culture that suppresses her authentic self-expression, wants, needs, and goals to something “higher”: a religion, a man, or a belief system of any kind.
It’s also a must-read for anyone curious about the Jesus Movement of the 70s, and for people who wonder why otherwise normal, intelligent young people would flock to get caught up in a religious cult.
  1. Have you written any other books that are not published?
No, not at this time. I have six published books — two memoirs and four nonfiction — as well as two anthologies I’ve edited or co-edited. I’m currently working on a book of journaling prompts that explore relationships, which is scheduled for release toward the end of this year.
  1. Pen or type writer or computer?
Definitely a computer. (Does anyone actually use typewriters anymore?)
  1. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Only that I know you’ll be intrigued, enjoy, and resonate with many aspects of my story in Accidental Jesus Freak. And I invite everyone who reads it to contact me and let me know which parts of it they could most relate to or are curious about.
I’d also like to thank you for hosting me and my new memoir.
