Crossing in Time (Between Two Evils bk 1) by D.L. Orton

Author: D.L. Orton

Narrators: Noah Michael Levine and Erin deWard

Length: 10 hours 17 minutes

Publisher: Rocky Mountain Press⎮2015

Genre: Science Fiction, Romance

Series: Between Two Evils, Books 1

Release date: Oct. 7, 2015

If someone took everything you live for, how far would you go to get it back?

When offered a one-way trip to the past, Isabel sacrifices everything for a chance to change the rapidly deteriorating present - and see her murdered lover one last time. When she arrives 20 years in the past, buck naked and mortally wounded, she has 24 hours to convince a stunned but enraptured 19-year-old to change their future. Definitely easier said than done, as success means losing him to a brainy, smart-mouthed bombshell (her younger self), and that's a heart breaker, save the world or not.

This offbeat tale is about falling madly in love when one is too cynical for such things, letting go of pessimism when it's the last life jacket on a sinking ship, and racing against the clock when one doesn't have the proper footwear. It's a coming-of-age story for old fogeys, a how-to-make-love guide for diehard celibates, and a laugh-out-loud tragedy with a hopeful twist.

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR D. L. ORTON lives in the Rocky Mountains where she and her husband are raising three boys, a golden retriever, two Siberian cats, and an extremely long-lived Triops.

In her spare time, she's building a time machine so that someone can go back and do the laundry.

VBT Off Season by E.S. Ruete

Off Season: A Novel of Healing
by E.S. Ruete

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Dottie woke up wondering where she was and why she was so cold. The first thing she noticed was
that she must be outside – she was lying on cold ground and snow was hitting her in unusual places.
That’s when she noticed the second thing. Her skirt was pulled up past her waist and her panties were
gone. Damn those bastards. It started to come back to her.

Dottie is now on an odyssey; a journey not of her choosing; a journey of healing, integration, and
reconciliation that will involve her partner, her friends, her enemies, her church, her whole community.
And her rapists. As she fights her way through social stereotypes about rape and rape victims, she
also finds the strength to overcome society’s messages of who she should be and lays claim her true
self. But the memories, the loss, the anger – and the fears – never go away. No woman chooses to be
raped. I asked Dottie why she chose to tell me a story of rape. She said that millions of women,
hundreds every day, have stories of rape that never get told. She told her story because she could.
Because she had to. Because maybe people would hear in a work of fiction a Truth that they could not
hear in any other way.

Excerpt Three:

“Look to your left. That person has divinity inside them. Look to your right. That person has a divine
spark. Now tap the shoulder of the person in in front of you. When they turn around, say, ‘Namasté. I
honor the divine spark within you.’

“As you prepare to celebrate Christmas, as we prepare to invite one another to the communion table,
think on this: Mary was an unwed mother, but she was not unclean. Joseph was a lecherous old man,
but he was not unclean. The shepherds lived in the fields with the sheep, but they were not unclean.
The Magi were heathens from a pagan land and probably not circumcised, but they were not unclean.
And Jesus was born among the donkey dung and slept on top of a cow’s supper, but He most assuredly
was not unclean.

“Let it be so.”

As Pastor Allen spoke, Mandy sat with her arms folded across her chest and her legs pressed together.
When others were looking left and right, she didn’t move, and when she was tapped on the shoulder,
she didn’t turn around. She just pursed her lips into a tighter line.

But those who sat near her thought they saw the least glimmer of a tear in the corner of her eye.
Whether it was for her church, or for the Pastor, or for herself, no one could guess. Even Mandy didn’t
know. But part of her, a part she was afraid of, a part she was trying to ignore, thought that maybe, just
maybe, it was for Dottie.

Interview with E.S. Ruete
What is the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
My wife and I eloped in our home church. We were upstairs getting married while the rest of the congregation was downstairs at the coffee hour waiting to congratulate the pastor on twenty years of ordination. My best man gave us a card with the 10 Best Things about Being Married. She had found a gift to match each of the ten things. I don’t remember all the gifts, but the creativity and thoughtfulness were beautiful.
How would you spend ten thousand bucks?
I’d buy an early 90s Corvette and take a road trip.
Where do you get your best ideas?
So far I’ve only gotten one idea that made it all the way to a novel. Despite all the things I’ve said in interviews and book talks I’m still at a loss to say exactly where the idea came from. Looking back I can see where the subject of rape and gender-based violence became important to me, but I was still surprised when Dottie started telling me her story of waking up on October Mountain.
What comes first, the plot or characters?
Characters. The characters tell a story. The story has implications and loose ends. Those become the plot.
What does your main character do that makes him/her special.
She heals. She makes the journey from victim to survivor. I’m not sure that makes her special, hundreds of women every day find themselves thrust upon that unwanted journey. But I think the lack of understanding, the lack of appropriate help, the lack of societal support mean that many, maybe most, of them get stuck in victim and never get the chance to heal properly. In a very real way, they don’t survive. Dottie does.

I also think Dottie is special because she is honest enough to tell her story all the way to the end where, even having survived and healed, the scars are still raw, the trauma is still real.

Excerpt

It’s only when we get to meet death personally and stare into its darkness that we
will ever really feel the raw emotion and fear that the darkness brings in the last
fleeting moments of our lives. We all think about it and sense when it’s coming.
But like most unpleasant thoughts, we disregard it, choosing to ignore the
niggling doubts our instincts are so desperately trying to warn us about.
So when I walked home that night and took my usual route across the isolated
beach, I felt danger was coming. My body tried to warn me that something
wasn’t right.
Why didn’t I listen to it?
The hairs on the back of my neck began to stand up in protest. Fear travelled
through my veins and pumped its poisonous venom straight into my heart. The
panicked beats of my heart drowned out the sounds of the crashing waves as
they pounded the shore. I was too late. I was nearly at the other end, and it would
have been quicker to keep moving.
The clouds were closing over me, and the sun was far out into the distance,
ready to rest its tired head for the night. There would be no point in turning back
now. So I lunged forward toward the exit. I desperately tried to get to the stairs
so I could take the last step from the cold, wet sand and onto the familiar stone
of safety. But as I placed my left foot on the step and relaxed my body, I felt a
sharp pain at the side of my head. A strong, cruel grip wrapped itself around the
top of my arm, and my feet left the safety of the ground. I flew across the sand
through the cold air and landed directly on a rock. The pain was crippling and
rendered me semi-unconscious. I was unable to focus on any object or stand up
and run from whatever force of nature had tried to take my life. I lay there for a
minute and tried, frantically, to muster the energy so I could escape the situation.
I needed to get home. The blood from my head trickled down the side of my
face, and I needed help. My eyes tried to adjust back into focus and looked for
someone to come to my aid, but I could see no one.
As I lay on the dampness of the sand, I looked into the night sky. I watched
with panic as dark shadows emerged and hovered over me as if they were lost
souls that danced over my vulnerable body. At that moment, everything stood
still. Time and existence froze as I looked upon the lost souls that waited eagerly
to take my life. A life I hadn’t yet lived. I was only sixteen, and there was so
much left to do: finish my exams and smoke weed. Kiss Peter Jackson, the high
school hunk. Or even make love.
Then all my thoughts were gone. All that was left was acceptance that it was
my time. There was no way out of it, so I closed my eyes and accepted my fate.
“Oh, come on. It’s no fun if your eyes are closed.” I jumped. My heart leapt
straight out of my chest and slammed back inside me.
I looked up toward the shadows that had formed a ring around me. They
danced delicately over my body, and in the centre was darkness, a shadow that
had crept out from the night and lingered over me. A dark energy had my wrists
and pinned me to the ground, leaving me paralysed. I stared up at the silhouette,
and I watched with terror as the monster shifted, forcing an impression of a
human face while he tried to form in our realm. My alternate perception showed
me his true form.
His head shook erratically from side to side. He had me distracted. Within an
instant, he had successfully transcended and he was sitting down on top of me.
All I could see was his deep, penetrating eyes. They seemed almost hypnotic, but
were filled with sin. They were soulless and without a touch of humanity. He
was the Devil on his darkest day.
