Waking the Ancients Nemesis of the Gods #2 by Catherine Cavendish

Waking
the Ancients
Nemesis
of the Gods #2
by
Catherine Cavendish

Genre:
Horror

Egypt,
1908
University
student Lizzie Charters accompanies her mentor, Dr. Emeryk
Quintillus, on the archeological dig to uncover Cleopatra’s tomb.
Her presence is required for a ceremony conducted by the renowned
professor to resurrect Cleopatra’s spirit—inside Lizzie’s body.
Quintillus’s success is short-lived, as the Queen of the Nile dies
soon after inhabiting her host, leaving Lizzie’s soul adrift . . .

Vienna,
2018
Paula
Bancroft’s husband just leased Villa Dürnstein, an estate once
owned by Dr. Quintillus. Within the mansion are several paintings and
numerous volumes dedicated to Cleopatra. But the archeologist’s
interest in the Egyptian empress deviated from scholarly into
supernatural, infusing the very foundations of his home with his dark
fanaticism. And as inexplicable manifestations rattle Paula’s
senses, threatening her very sanity, she uncovers the link between
the villa, Quintillus, and a woman named Lizzie Charters.

And
a ritual of dark magic that will consume her soul . . .

Excerpt:

The man looked down at his scattered ashes. “I am growing tired of waiting. When will I be free of this prison?”
“Soon.” The woman moved away in that fluid, ethereal manner of hers. Her scarlet gown flowed around her. An armlet shaped in the goddess Isis’s symbol—a coiled cobra—gleamed. Heavy black kohl rimmed her eyes, emphasizing the deep violet of her irises, while her long, black hair, set in many tight braids, reached her waist. “You must be patient,” the woman said. “I told you I would help you get what you desire.”
“But that isn’t possible. She is back in her body. Back in her tomb.”
“All is possible. I have the power. Haven’t I proved it? Aren’t you the proof of it?”
“I still don’t live.”
“Your spirit lives.”
“My spirit cannot touch her.”
“But it can touch her spirit. Mate with her spirit if you so desire.”
“And why would you do this for me?”
“My revenge is incomplete. My murdering sister rests while I am forced to wander in spirit with no substance of my own.”
“And how will it be done? I am in your hands. This is not comfortable for me. I am always in control.”
The woman threw back her head and laughed, showing black, rotten teeth. Stinking, no doubt, if he could smell anything.
“You have not been in control for a long time. The god I serve is Set, and he is in control. He will come and he will work through me. More powerful this time, for Sekhmet will bring him.”
“And I will have my queen?”
“You will have her.”
“She will be in the one who is here now?”
“That is to be determined.”
“But this one is not of the blood.”
“She will not be possessed, but transformed. We do not need a blood relative.”
“That has been tried before. And failed.”
“The rules were not properly followed. You cannot possess all of her. You have seen that. The gods will not allow it. Her spirit must be divided. Some of it must remain with her body—and lie cold in her tomb. Waiting. Always waiting. In that way, the gods are appeased and my price is also exacted.”
“So part of my queen will still wander, looking for her lover, but enough of her spirit will be released to come to me.”
“Now you understand. You will have all that you desire, and my revenge will not be compromised.”
“And I can be with her. For all time.”
The woman didn’t answer. She gave the merest hint of a smile and passed on.
In his world of shadows, Dr. Emeryk Quintillus waited.

DESTINY
IN DEATH

Egypt,
1908

Eminent
archeologist Dr. Emeryk Quintillus has unearthed the burial chamber
of Cleopatra. But this tomb raider’s obsession with the Queen of
the Nile has nothing to do with preserving history. Stealing sacred
and priceless relics, he murders his expedition crew, and
flees—escaping the quake that swallows the site beneath the desert
sands . . .

Vienna,
1913

Young
widow Adeline Ogilvy has accepted employment at the mansion of Dr.
Quintillus, transcribing the late professor’s memoirs. Within the
pages of his journals, she discovers the ravings of a madman
convinced he possessed the ability to reincarnate Cleopatra. Within
the walls of his home, she is assailed by unexplained phenomena:
strange sounds, shadowy figures, and apparitions of
hieroglyphics.
Something
pursued Dr. Quintillus from Egypt. Something dark, something hungry.
Something tied to the fate and future of Adeline Ogilvy . . .

Blessing of Luna by Blaise Ramsay blitz

Blessing of Luna
Blaise Ramsay
(Wolf gods #1)
Publication date: April 20th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Lonely. That’s how it felt when Damien Pierce returned to Big Timber, Montana. It had been his childhood home until the day he was hit by a speeding car only to learn he wasn’t badly hurt. The experience landed him the label of the town freakshow.

Following the death of his foster mom, Damien soon disconnected from the world around him. That was at least, until he met her. She looked human but something about made her appear otherworldly to him. He knew he shouldn’t but he wanted her. He would do anything to get to know her. To have her.
Jillian Styles was immortal. Cursed by a dark god never to find rest. A shifter capable of taking the form of a beautiful wolf. She had searched for her lover’s reincarnated soul for centuries only to find he was nowhere to be found. When she meets Damien, her world is turned upside down. She falls in love with him instantly and begins to pursue him.
However, Damien soon learns the darker part of Jill’s world. He finds himself on the hit list of the same vampire Lord responsible for killing Jill’s lover and reigniting the flames of an old war. His daughter desires Damien and vows to have him at any cost.
With the help of Alexander Kain, the mysterious wolf shifting soldier, Damien will learn what he thought he knew was only tip of the paranormal iceberg. He soon finds himself in the eyes of a vindictive and rage-filled dark god.
If you like hot lycanthrope guys, overly possessive vampire chicks, vindictive gods, strong female leads and some hot sex scenes, this book is for you.
EXCERPT:
Realization hit Damien as to who he was staring down. The same dark god that had challenged him stood in Lilith’s form. Damien’s heart inside his chest burned as he thought about Kain and all he’d done for him. Jill. Dad…Rob…Gabriel…Holt…Chelsea.
“Looks like it’s just you and me, Damien. You can surrender and die in peace or you can fight and die anyway. Your choice.”
Save him. Luna’s voice inside of Damien’s mind drew his attention. Save him. I beg of you. Please.
Damien’s body became surrounded with a radiant light so bright it forced Lilith step back. Her wing covered her face. He braced himself on his front legs, roaring at the monster in front of him responsible for taking so much.
The light became so intense not even the lycans could stare at it.
When it finally faded, Damien stood in his true lycan form. His white fur blew in the wind like mist at the tip of his stiffened ears to the end of his tail. The dark markings of his wolf form only seen on the tips of his ears, feet and tail. The fur on the back of his neck was thicker, almost resembling a mane.
“By the gods, he looks like…” Lune stood in awe.
“Tenebris.” Gabriel’s finished, his voice nothing but a whisper.
Stoker used the opportunity to sneak off, nursing the wound on his arm inflicted by Gabriel when he shifted into his full lycan form.
The vampires hissed at the light rising from the east, trying to flee towards the waning night. They had fallen right into Damien’s plan and were intercepted. Howls and snarls joined dying screams as the vampires were overwhelmed.
“What trickery is this?!” Lilith’s fangs spat as she tried to speak.
Damien ignored her, seeing the fear in her eyes as he made his way over to Kain on the ground.
The alpha was so weak he couldn’t retain his shifted form.
“Kain.” Damien’s voice was a comfortable echo. Warm and reassuring. “Alex. Can you hear me?”
Kain opened his eyes, slightly jumping. “Tenebris?”
Damien shook his head. “No. It’s me.”
“Damien. How?”
Damien took Kain’s jacket he was always wearing around his waist and covered his friend with it. “Stay here. Don’t move and don’t die.”
He stood back up and went to face Lilith. The lycans in his way stepped aside, their heads bowed. “This ends here, Lilith. You won’t hurt anyone else.”

Lucas, Dom's benefactor and parent clone, is a diseased convict now returned from Martian exile. Dom's brain implants offer Lucas the chance for a life-saving mind merger, and he intends to make that happen.

"The novel is in turn thrilling and thought-provoking, and has the makings of a powerful sci-fi franchise."--Foreword Reviews (Clarion Review, 5 stars)

"captivating, relentlessly paced...this novel should more than satisfy anyone who enjoys cerebral sci-fi."--Blueink Review (starred review)

Excerpt
Dec. 16, 2143

There were forty-five of us transports crammed into the space bus, and even though everyone was sedated, the two and a half day trip was arduous.

After we docked there was a slight shaking. Our capsule shot backward, and stopped. With a hissing of air, the door slid open. “Welcome to Mir,” a man’s voice said. “Everybody out.”

The artificial gravity here was less than the moon’s; I got up without much difficulty. Two uniformed guards checked us off as we came out. “You’re Dominic Tessier,” one said crisply, when she touched my ID tag with a scanner.

My legs uncertain, I stepped onto a moving sidewalk that took us through a tunnel. In a few minutes the passageway curved, and the main terminus area of the space station came into view. I held tight to the railing and stared. The people here arrived and departed from all over the solar system: personnel from the space ships, businessmen, and new-world workers. Some, while roughly dressed, had a special swagger. I thought they might be prospectors. Then a group of T-men walked through in unisex suits and skull caps. Although silent, their expressions and gestures showed communication. Thanks to their brain implants, they were telepathic.

Only a few months earlier, I’d been a student at the Space Training Academy. My brain was being transformed through implants, and I looked forward myself, to a career in space as a T-man administrator. An awful injustice had been done to me, and my dreams were trashed. Yet I felt no regret, resentment, or any emotion at all. A silver bracelet around my wrist created a chemically-induced docility, more powerful than chains.

Our guards took us along a walkway above a large, brightly lit loading dock. Through the side-mesh I could see the Stellar Blossom. The ship’s blue hull seemed to stretch on forever; it dwarfed the men gathered to service her.

Ahead was a short, balding man I remembered from my time in jail. “Phil,” I called, catching up to him.

He turned to me without surprise. “Hello, Dom,” he said in the slow speech of the bracelet wearers. He pointed up the dock to a line of people entering the ship under a bright yellow canopy. “Did you notice? Some are women.”

“Passengers,” I said. “A different world.”

Trickster's Hunt by Carrie Whitethorne & Kel Carpenter

Title: The Trickster's Hunt
Series: Three Tricksters Harem #1
Authors: Carrie Whitethorne & Kel Carpenter
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: May 18, 2018

Have you ever had a feeling like something bad was going to happen? What about a gut reaction to someone you had never met? You know what I’m talking about. The times where something just doesn’t feel right, so you turn and walk the other way only to find out someone got robbed down the same alley you decided not to turn down.

I get that feeling a lot. I thought it was normal. I didn’t know it was a warning. I didn’t know it was there to keep me alive.

There’s a lot of things I didn’t know, but what I now know…it’s got me scared senseless.

Turns out, the Gods are real.

Destiny is real.

Fate is something that we can’t always control.

And me? I’m just a human caught up in a game of the Gods. Except—I’m not. Not really. I’m someone else entirely, according to the three genies who have sworn to protect me.

From what? Well to explain that, we’re going to have to go way back to Ancient Egypt. A land of monsters and Gods and wars.

Where do I fit in? Smack bang in the middle, by the looks of it.

I managed five lengths of the pool before I lost the ability to breathe and positioned myself on the steps leading down into the water for a rest. That was when he walked in.
I’m pretty sure I gawked. I couldn’t help it. Most people would have found it odd that all these fit guys were wandering around, but not me. I was damn grateful for them.
He was tall; taller than the other two, broader across the shoulders, and ripped. Not that I was comparing. I make a point of appreciating the male form in most of its varieties.
He ignored me, walking around to the deeper end of the pool. I shamelessly watched him pass. The past two days I’d been subject to the torture of two flirting men. The one passing me now, with his honey coloured skin, rippling abs, and short boxed beard, was one too many. His choice of swimwear didn’t help either.
Nope. Nothing left to the imagination other than how his blood pressure fared.

There was no one else there, and I was about to go back to my room when a cat sauntered over. I didn’t see where it had come from, but it had a collar and was a grey striped colour.
It sat there for ages, staring me out, its tail flicking from side to side. Then it walked around the table a few times. When it came right up and pawed at my leg, I wasn’t sure what to do. “Umm...go on. Shoo.”
It didn’t.
It kept tapping at my leg. I was going to swipe it away when it jumped up into my lap, purring and pressing its face down the side of the chair next to my hip. I grabbed it and dropped it on the floor next to me.
Rather than take the hint, the tenacious little shit leapt effortlessly onto the table, barely avoiding knocking the glass over, and turned to face me as it sat down. It looked pissed off, until it sat its arse down, lifted its leg, and began to clean itself.

Carrie is a mum. An author. A creator of worlds. A dreamer. A friend.

At her childhood home in Yorkshire, Carrie was encouraged to utilize her imagination, to see things for what they could be, and to ask the question “what if?” Her mum introduced her to worlds filled with magic: Barrie, Lewis, Tolkien, Blyton. That magic evolved and continued to inspire her when she discovered Rowling and Sanderson. They all asked the question and explored the possibilities, opening doors to new adventures that would forever change generations to come.

Even as a child, Carrie preferred creative outlets and writing. But as an adult, Carrie had not yet had that moment of inspiration to begin writing a novel of her own. That all changed one normal morning, on a normal walk to school, when a small boy slipped from the pavement and on to the road. There was no accident. No horror. Just a near miss that later formulated into one question: what if he was able to save himself? Fueled by this question and Carrie’s love of fantasy, European folklore, and mythological creatures, The Riftkeepers emerged. This world answered her question. The series gave birth to characters that took on a life of their own, many telling continued stories in novellas and spinoffs.

When Carrie isn’t writing and annoying her editor with endless typos, she barely sleeps, thinks about her characters, indulges in an unhealthy Facebook addiction, exploring the beauty of the Lake District as her backyard, and contemplating which she loves more: pizza or wine. Definitely wine. Considered to be one of the most boring people she knows, writing her own biography was a definite weakness. Her first draft was rubbish and was picked apart by friends who insisted she was funnier and far more interesting than she gives herself credit. She was no longer allowed to write her own biography, so she provided input.

Carrie now resides in West Cumbria with her husband and two children. They are her inspiration. Her world.

Guest Post:

Hi, I'm Matthew Thompson, best friend and fiancee to Beatrice Young, the star of the Beatrice Young cozy cat mysteries. Beatrice and I grew up together and we actually got married (and divorced!) in our early 20's. Now we're in our mid-60's and ready to tie the knot again! We're just a couple of crazy kids, I guess. We live together in Bee's barn house just outside of the small town of Ashbrook, New Hampshire, where Beatrice runs the Cozy Cat Cafe, parents her 4 cats, and helps solves local mysteries.

Me? I'm a retired park ranger and my chief job now is to make sure Bee doesn't get herself in too much trouble. I'm also pretty good in the kitchen and make a mean pasta carbonara.

I wasn't too sure about Bee's amateur sleuthing at first. She's been shot out, had a bomb go off in front of her, been in a car chase, had a tiger come after her and much more. I thought she was crazy for putting herself in so much danger. But I know her heart's in the right place--she loves our town and wants to protect the people in it. Plus, she's a sucker for adventure. Never a dull moment with my Bee!

I also wasn't too sure about her 4 cats. They've been a bit jealous of me, especially since I moved in. Hamish especially, since Bee got him first. But we're all good buddies now, probably because I'm the one opening the cans of cat food most of the time.

So that's Bee and I. I hope you join us on our adventures.

Giveaway:
Prize is: 1 prize of two eBook boxsets, books 1-5 and 6-10 of my Beatrice Young Cozy Cat Mystery series (links to boxsets: http://smarturl.it/beatriceyoungset1 http://smarturl.it/beatriceyoungset2) Contest runs until May 25. Alannah Rogers will pick the winner and email them.

My review:
5*
Patty Costello has come up with acute story for kids. From small Children to about the age of 8 would enjoy this story. The words used are easy to semi easy so would be great for young readers. Diane Cojocaru has done an awesome job with illustrations. They are vibrant and bright and very engaging to the kids. Our youngest child enjoyed flipping through the pages, even after we read the book.

This is a cute story for kids. The King doesn't like the people outside of his Kingdom and decides that to build a wall around it to keep everyone else out. His Baker Catalina over hears this. Her family lives outside of the Kingdom and she will never be able to see them again if the king gets his way.

Catalina comes up with a way to build a wall that will not last, hoping the King will eventually change his mind. First she offers icing, then sprinkles, then cookie dough. In the end the King does change his mind and Catalina is able to see her family.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher to read and review. The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it.
