The Phoenix Cycle by Bob Collopy

The
Phoenix Cycle
by
Bob Collopy

Genre:
Dystopian

New
San Francisco is the last city standing on a world ravaged by storms
of ash and debris. The city survived by putting the ideals of the
American dream on steroids and inspiring its people to persevere,
though they have become ruthless in the process. Its citizens are
ruled by the General, who has made sure that his people understand
that gentleness and pity have become weaknesses that nature no longer
tolerates.

Now
Steve and Leslie must choose whether they will apply for the
General’s once in a lifetime opportunity to “Rise from the Ashes”
and join the Inner Circle that rules the city. If they don’t, they
will be damned to spend the rest of their lives in the ghettos of
Edingburg, a place where virtual reality has become a
government-subsidized addiction.

For
Steve, the choice is easy. His loyalties lie with the IRA, a
revolutionary army led by a voice only known as “Mom.” They are
trying to overthrow the General and free the people of New San
Francisco from the cruelties of the City Guard. Steve’s mission is
to broadcast a recording of a speech that a famous philosopher died
to tell. Many thousands have and will perish to get this message out,
but is anyone willing to listen?

My Diary?
Journal Entry #3

I guess I should make something clear to you.  I only write this because I know this diary isn’t actually personal and I‘d hate to ruin your reading experience, you lying piece of shit.

With the passage of time people come and people go.  That I can deal with.  The only thing that's passed me by that truly hurts are the people who never came.

Part of me is sorry.  Another enraged.  I have so many years left. It seems like I’ll never run out.  But somehow, on that single day, I lost an entire lifetime.  And no matter what I do...I can never get it back.

I just want you to know.  I blame myself for not stopping you.  For not putting you in this cage instead the other way round.  But at this point it really doesn’t matter who enchains who. It doesn’t matter that you’re now the master and I’m the slave. We’re both miserable and nothing we do to each other can ever change that. This fight we’re having, this hatred for you that still keeps me warm at night, it’s all just a distraction from the fact that we both failed to sculpt this world into something resembling the beautiful.

For now, I think it’s best I tell our story. Perhaps once I tell it to ourselves, we will finally get from our actions what our soul really wanted: transcendance.  Don’t scoff, allow me this final ember of hope.

This next part is the only truth I’ve found from what we’ve done to each other and to our world.  It is important to remember it always.

I am not made of one, I am made of many.

Each and every person is made up of many smaller people.  Everyone has a saint.  Everyone has a lover.  Everyone has a sinner.  Everyone has a monster.

What defines us is not what people we have within us, but which people we develop most and how great those people become.

Bob
Collopy was raised on southern values. A world of rigidity and blind
faith. He was then
moved
to Sedona. A near cultlike
world,
grown from 1960's flower children. He was then moved
to
Scottsdale. A world of extreme wealth and vice. He then went to
college and joined a
fraternity
so notorious it was on national and world news multiple times.
Due
to these shifts, Bob always found himself the the semilucid
observer;
constantly confused
and
adjusting to new and opposing sets of norms few cultures would ever
call normal or even
acceptable.
The
city Bob has created is a blending of these intense and opposing
cultures and the people

trying

to survive and conquer them.

Guest Post:

The Thesis that begins in Alcatraz

Sometimes, to write a good book…you have to go to prison.

Wearing a suit to Alcatraz…apparently some people are caught off guard by such a maneuver.  As I stood sandwiched between the corroded metal bars that seal close the notorious 5 by 9 cells of Alcatraz, I was pummeled by unsure looks from my fellow Alcatraz enthusiasts.  They all stared at me, as if alarmed, by my unfitting apparel.

Apparently, there was a meeting regarding the appropriate apparel at Alcatraz…I guess I never got the memo.  In place of a suit they opted for cheap fuzzy headphones.  The wires for these personal boomboxes wiggled down their fronts, creating a cacophonous knot, but somehow the strings  reorganized themselves just as they reached the plug ins of the the 1980’s box recorder.  They wore an array of sweat shirts, most of which serving to proclaim their love for a particular city (Usually San Francisco).  They even wore accessories such as baseball caps and would even tote their practically packed fanny packs.  All those articles put together made a very clear and cohesive uniform…evidently, I was not following protocol and deserved to be on the other side of one of the rowed metal bars.

The real reason for my venture to Alcatraz is because of my book, The Phoenix Cycle.  The Phoenix Cycle is set in San Francisco sometime in the future.  There is a new government where San Francisco stands alone as a city state, ruled by The General.  In The Phoenix Cycle, Alcatraz has been reopened as a place to jail philosophers who have views which oppose The General’s.  But Alcatraz has been secretly taken over, and now the philosophers are heading a rebellion against The General.

So instead of being the last stop for America’s worst criminals, Alcatraz is now the jumping off point; towards a brave new world.

This is my first book by Casi McLean even though it is the 2nd book in the Lake Lanier Mysteries Series. I will be checking out book one very soon. This can be read as a stand alone, but you do have to really pay attention at first until you get used to which time line each person is from. For instance Nick's father was born in 1921, his mother in 1983, they bump into Nick when he is 30 years old. I do want book one to get more of a the back story though, some things would make a lot more sense. Casi has done a really good job with this book. It is a Time Travel Novel. Casi has brought September 11, 2001 back to our memories. She is very respectful to the victims of 9/11

Nick Cramer has always blamed himself for his girlfriend Carlie dying in the 9/11 attacks. Then he finds a way to travel back in time to save Carlie. Their is secret portal hidden beneath Atlanta’s Lake Lanier. Nick knows he should not mess with the time line of events in the past or the future but with a big heart and also a broken heart he still wants to save Carlie.

Nick meets Piper Taylor and knows there is something special between them, but his guilt over Carlie urges him on.

Piper must avoid the terrorism in 2001, find Nick, and get them back to their correct time before before Nick makes any changes that will put a rip in time and they become lost in time forever.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Amy Deuchler. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

  1. How did you select your narrator? I compare the search to looking through a ton of oysters to find a pearl. I’m super picky about narrators. I want them to feel the passion and pain in my story and put emphisis where I have it in my mind. The narrator has to fit the tone of the book and know what makes the characters react the way they do. Not an easy task, but I know when I hear the clips.
  2. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? All of my writing has a piece of me written between the lines, especially my Lake Lanier Mysteries Series. The first time I heard the eerie lore, strange occurances and supernatural sitings, my muse danced. The tales told me what to write, and the pages flowed like water. Now that I live on the lake, I’m inspired every day.
  3. Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I don’t know what I’d do without audiiobooks. After a long day of sitting at my computer, reading, writing, research, promo, and marketing, my eyes blur. I love to read, but my eyes just say enough is enough. Audiobooks take me into the stories I love, while my eyes rest. I listen in my car, shopping, walking, or sitting on my porch. Anytime I need a break I have my stories. I love audiobooks!
  4. Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format? Amy nails the tense moments. She reads with the passion and intensity that those scenes need and makes the words jump off the pages with emotion. People can’t always read what the author feels but a good narrator helps translate those feelings.
  5. If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go? Obviously, as a romantic suspense time travel author, I love the concept! I would use the power in a heartbeat. I’m not sure what I’d choose as my first destination…and yet, in a sense, I’ve already experienced a time slip with each of my novels. I hope everyone feels that way when they listen to or read my books…after all, that’s the point.
  6. In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series? I love a series. They give me a chance to revisit characters and places I already love and, as an author, a series reconnects me to readers who loved my stories. A stand-alone is easier. One and done. In a series, you have to find a way to bring your readers up to speed without dumping too much backstory on them. But a series, to me, is more rewarding. I try to make all of my series stories stand-alone, but I make sure some of the previous characters visit in smaller roles.
  7. What's your favorite:
    1. Food: Lobster
    2. Song: Everlasting Love
    3. Book: Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
    4. Television: show Outlander
    5. Movie: Déjà Vu
    6. Band: Anything Motown
    7. Sports: team Atlanta Braves [pro] Georgia Bulldogs [college]
    8. City: Ashville N.C. or Charleston S.C.
  8. Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work? I was inspired by Outlander and Déjà Vu but they aren’t refrenced in my writing.
  9. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? Learn from those who have walked the path before you, and never give up on your dreams.
  10. What’s next for you? My current WIP is a romantic political thriller, Reign Of Fire, which is the first in my Deep State Mysteries series, and I’m also working on a new supernatural romance series, Ghosts Of Lake Lanier.

GENRE: Paranormal Romance
Sometimes fate gets it all wrong.

Zoey Kent has lived with that fact ever since she turned eighteen and learned that the man she loved could never be hers. He’s a born shifter, a wolf, and she’s a mere human. Fate doesn’t care if on paper they’re a perfect pair. She isn’t his fated mate and she’s resigned herself to the knowledge that someday, she’ll have to watch Michael mate with another. It’s never crossed her mind that there might be someone else out there for her, that she would be the one to mate another, to choose another over everything she’s ever known or wanted.

Sometimes fate gets it all right.

Rafe Hudson left his pack behind years ago. Physically and mentally scarred from an attack that left his parents and twin dead, he walked away from his responsibilities as Alpha. He never intended to return but lone wolf or not, he can’t leave Michael open to an attack he’s learned is coming for his only brother. What he didn’t know was that going home would mean scenting his mate, the one person in the world that could make him whole again, that could give him everything he thought he’d lost. His pack, his home and his family.

But fate always has a plan.

There’s no way Michael’s brother is her future, is there? Just like there’s no way that the girl his brother has loved since they were kids, was always meant to be his, right?

Only fate knows why they were brought together but there is one thing for sure, the sparks between Zoey and Rafe are undeniable. The bond between them is unbreakable. And together… they’ll change the face of the pack forever.

Read an Excerpt:

Excerpt Two:

Rafe Hudson was going to rip his little brother’s intestines out and use them to choke him to death. It was a fantasy he’d been living over and over in his head for the past few hours. It was a fantasy that he would have fulfilled already if only she hadn’t stopped him.

Her. Zoey. His mate. He was still trying to wrap his head around how that was even possible.

All of those years out there in the big, bad world. All of his time spent roaming from city to town to countryside. He hadn’t been out there looking for her but he was what he was. He was a shifter and it was hard coded in him to seek the woman that was meant to make him whole. In the back of his mind, every time he encountered a new woman, a new wolf or other shifter, he’d wondered if she was the one.

He’d wondered if he would find her at his next stop or the one after that. He’d wondered where she was and if she was looking for him too. And, in his darkest moments, he’d wondered if fate had even seen fit to give him a mate when he’d already failed to protect those that meant the most to him once.

He’d failed his family, his entire pack. He had been the one to run past the boundary line. He was the one the hunters had followed back to camp. He was the reason they were all dead, every one of them.

His proud father, the leader of them all. His mother, the sweetest wolf to have ever been born. And Gabe, his littermate, his twin, his other half in every way. The only member of his family that hadn’t been in the woods that day was Michael and because fate liked to throw punches when you were already down, Rafe knew that the reason his little brother hadn’t been there was because he’d been with her.

Zoey.

To find out, after all of this time, that she was his? That she’d been his all along? That she was his but that she’d been here with his brother? Well, that was an injustice he wouldn’t, and couldn’t, tolerate.

“What do you do in your free time?” he asked.

Was this an interview or was he just making small talk? He didn’t strike me as a small talk kind of guy. “Since I moved to Brooklyn, I’ve been checking out the neighborhoods. Taking photos. And visiting art galleries. I run every day. And I draw and paint.” I wasn’t sure why I said that. I used to draw and paint, but it had been six months since I’d picked up a pencil or paintbrush.

“Which artists do you like?” He tilted his head, as if the answer really mattered to him.

I didn’t know what kind of answers he was looking for, or how this had anything to do with bartending. “I like Picasso. Especially his Blue Period. Frida Kahlo. Willem de Kooning. Rodin’s sculptures. And the street art and graffiti in Brooklyn.”

I stared at the black and grey inked tattoos on his left arm. I’d add them to my list of art I liked. Intricate designs, interwoven with thick swirls and chains. A shield of armor on his upper arm. An anatomical heart and dagger. A Celtic cross. A banner trailing down his forearm, with words written in script. Not English. Latin? I wanted to know what it said and meant to him.

“Why should I take a chance on you?” he asked, reminding me of the reason I came here in the first place.

I dragged my gaze back to his face. God, he was gorgeous. His face was a study in symmetry. My fingers itched to hold a charcoal pencil so I could sketch him.

“I’m looking for a fresh start.” Something like recognition flickered in his eyes, but it was so fleeting, I might have imagined it. “That’s why I moved to Brooklyn.”

“By yourself?” he asked.

I nodded.

“That’s brave.”

I wasn’t sure about the brave part. So far, it was lonely. And a lot harder than I’d expected. “I really need this job. Brooklyn is expensive. And I can’t go home. I just…can’t.”

He studied my face, and I wondered what he saw there.

“These are the rules. Number one: don’t lie to me. Number two: don’t steal from me. You ring up every drink you serve. You don’t give free drinks to your friends. Number three: no drugs. If you break any of my rules, you’re out. Got a problem with anything I said?”

“Are you offering me a job?” I asked, gripping my lower lip between my teeth to keep from smiling. His gaze dropped to my mouth and lingered there before he shook his head and looked away.

“I’m offering you a chance. Not everyone is cut out for bartending. So?”

“I don’t lie, steal, or do drugs.” The two times I’d smoked pot with Trevor didn’t seem worth mentioning.

I held Killian’s gaze until he nodded, satisfied I was telling the truth. My face broke into a smile, but he held up his hand to stop me from getting too excited. “You’ll have guys hassling you. When they get drunk, they say and do stupid shit. I’m not saying it’s right,” he shrugged one shoulder, “but you’re not unattractive, so you’ll need to deal with that.”

“I’m not unattractive? Are you always this charming?”

“If you’re looking for Prince Charming, it ain’t me, sunshine.”

Sunshine? At least he didn’t make any empty promises or pretend to be something he wasn’t. “I don’t believe in fairytales. Or happily ever after. Prince Charming was an evil villain in disguise, and Cinderella was the doormat he wiped his feet on.” His brows went up a notch. “So, don’t worry. I’m not looking for Prince Charming. I’m not looking for a guy to sweep me off my feet either. I’m just looking for a job. And I can handle guys hassling me. My dad and two older brothers taught me how to fend for myself.”

He raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Did they?”

“Yes, they did. My dad and brother are state police officers and my other brother is a Marine. I grew up in a testosterone-fueled house with enough badassery to rub off on little old me.”

His lips curved into a smile, showing off his straight white teeth…and—oh God, dimples. He had dimples. But the smile faded all too quickly, as if he’d caught himself doing something he shouldn’t, and the mask slipped firmly into place again.

Book Description:

Imagine the son of Cinderella and Noah. That's Alabaster Ash, professional window washer and amateur foot fetishist, thrall to his three physically fit, brutally aggressive stepsisters.

After polishing foot after foot of glass in the gingerbread city of Candyland and cleaning up after the “wicked stairmasters,” he haunts the bars and streets looking for love and appreciation -or a really nice pair of feet.

Like it or not, Alabaster finds himself reliving and reimagining his parents' lives as he roams from bar to bar, from thrill ride to stunt show in the linguistic funland that is ARK.

Excerpt:
Ground squirmed
past the windows, shuffling racks of bones and skulls under the soptoil as
clouds crept along the horizon. On the bus, all the windows let in cold air and
hung like a racked row of ice cubes in a tray, but I barely cracked the bottle.
Out I poured
when the doors opened, unable to feel my legs, unable to see the ocean, but I
could smell the salty marsh marching wet blue harridans, swiping and batting
the spit, pushing the blood and saltboxing up fatjuices into my sinuses.

Jammed a kwata
in the belly box and engaged the line.

–Hello?
–I’ve arrived.
I’m here.
–That’s great. I
bet a little walk will feel like a little slice of heaven, eh?
–I suppose.
–Well, I’ll
leave the light on for you, Buddy.

I slid on my
gloves and tried not to flinch at the sudden mustering of prickly discs
skipping to my face. I leaned in hard and clacked through town, blackened and
boarded and unblinking, barely wicklit. Smatter rooms to let. Ingrown hairs.
Offseason. Unseasoned in the savorless in and out drag of the tonguetide. I
dashed through a carless parking lot and into an astralamped glass meadow
jotting down quivering blue starlight ink- puddles into suckshifts of
snowhunchbanks humpbacking the outermost stretch of tideland. To the left, a
skit of cloven unguals stirred it seemed, crunchy, but I only got half an ear
worth and couldn’t noctoscop the goings-on of could be caribou or elk or deer
bowing their head, bowing their head before the almighty peering down hard and
in, like the retractable Polton and Crane lamp in the dentist’s office that
hangs my mouth open.
Inside the
blackness, the stickiting, ricketing pickets of thickets wiggle on their dicot
studs without me seeing, while they shot out the other side and stitched a
black curtain against the edge of the rest of the world. I clacked another mile
stretch as brine wafers tickled my ears and swizzled my nos- trils while
Lawrence Welk drift popping jollyjawdropping orbs uncorked across my field of
vichy.
Estrella’s was a
lighthouse, though not the vertical variety. But it glowed.
Light hung out
over the glass and flabbed fat, hotwhite dough out the sides as I took up her
street. This was another gingerbread house, hundreds of miles from home, though
this one in earshot of the beach. I rang and rang and rang and then just opened
the door.
