Three Lessons in Seduction by Sofie Darling

Narrator: Mary Sarah

Length: 9 hours

Publisher: Sofie Darling

Released: Dec. 13, 2017

Genre: Historical Romance

Paris, September 1824

Lord Nicholas Asquith needs his wife. Too bad he broke her heart ten years ago.

Can he resist a second chance at the love he lost?

When Mariana catches the eye of the man at the center of an assassination plot, Nick puts aside their painful past and enlists her to obtain information by any means necessary, even if it means seducing the enemy agent.

Even if the thought makes his blood boil.

Only by keeping his distance from Mariana these last ten years was he able to pretend indifference to her. With every moment spent with her, he feels his tightly held control slipping.

Can she trust the spy who broke her heart?

Mariana spent the last decade forgetting Nick. Now she has the chance to best him at his own game, an opportunity she can’t resist, even as her view of him begins to shift. Increasingly, she wants nothing more than to seduce her own husband.

It's only a matter of time before mad passion ignites, a passion never convincingly extinguished. A passion that insists on surrendering to the yearning of the flesh and, quite possibly, of the heart.

Sofie spent much of her twenties raising two boys and reading every book she could get her hands on. Once she realized that she was no longer satisfied with simply reading the books she loved, that she must write them, too, she decided to finish her degree and embark on a writing career. Mr. Darling and the boys gave her their wholehearted blessing.
When she’s not writing heroes who make her swoon, she runs a marathon in a different state every year, visits crumbling medieval castles whenever she gets a chance, and enjoys a slightly codependent relationship with her beagle, Bosco.

Q&A with Author Sofie Darling
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • Three Lessons in Seduction is my first published novel, and the task of finding a narrator felt a bit overwhelming. So I just started listening to books in my genre. It wasn’t long before I came across Mary Sarah narrating a Tamara Leigh novel, and I fell in love with her performance. Mary Sarah has a way of expressing emotion that is, in my opinion, unparalleled. She blows me away with her skill.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • We worked fairly closely together. Since this was my first experience with creating an audiobook, Mary Sarah was great at walking me through the process. I provided her with character breakdowns that included details like nationality, class, rank, and a few adjectives that pinpointed each character’s defining characteristics. She’s such a pro that she didn’t need much more guidance from me.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • For Three Lessons, the city of Paris, both its past and its present, provided inspiration far beyond being a mere setting for the story. I had so much fun recreating locations that I’d visited in the 21st century into their 19th century counterparts. Paris itself became a fleshed-out character.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • Travel is my number one way of avoiding burn-out. I must always, always have a trip booked and on the horizon. Even if the trip is nine months in the future, I know it’s there. This helps my mind sink in to whatever project I’m working on, and the ticking clock provides the impetus to complete whatever goal I’ve set. Then, when I’m on the trip, that’s when my batteries recharge, and I come home ready to write some more and book my next trip.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • As Three Lessons is a romance, the emotion of the story ramps up as my hero and heroine find their way toward love. Any time Nick and Mariana are in a room together, Mary Sarah’s masterful performance makes me feel every emotional response alongside them.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I became a voracious audiobook listener a few years ago when I was training for a marathon. Bored with the same old podcasts I’d been listening to on those long runs, I decided to branch out into audiobooks. I never looked back. During marathon training season, I can listen to one or two books a week. I love it.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I’d invite them to look back to the Greeks, where storytelling began as an oral tradition with Homer. It was only much later that the Odyssey and the Iliad were put to paper. For me, it matters less how I receive an excellent story than that I do. I love the written word, but when spoken aloud, it can take on a whole other life.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • I’m not sure that any of my characters have appeared in my dreams, but I do this thing when my alarm goes off in the morning. I hit snooze and close my eyes. Then I go into this twilight state, half-asleep / half-awake, and allow my characters to wander around my head for ten minutes, until the alarm goes off again. Sometimes, they tell me what they want to do on the page today. Other times, they tell me they didn’t like what they did yesterday, and I need to have another think about it. Either way, it provides me with a solid starting point for the day’s writing.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • When I’m in a writing slump, I’ll start reading in a different genre from what I’m writing. The same goes for reading. If all romances are starting to read the same to me, I’ll pick up a cozy mystery or a non-fiction title, something that resets my brain and gives me some fresh ideas.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Mary Sarah and I have begun recording Tempted by the Viscount, the follow-up to Three Lessons in Seduction, which releases in June.

Book Description:

The grisly murder of a diplomat’s son in Central Park draw NYPD Detective Gerald Meeker and FBI Special Agent Andee Trakes into a twisted and confusing investigation. Within hours, the evidence indicates the man was executed in the manner saved for werewolves. Andee Trakes is assigned to liaison with a history professor, who is an expert on folklore and legends.

Professor Alwyn Lloyd, handsome, articulate and successful, not only agrees the method of death was indeed an execution, he claims to be a werewolf. Andee is torn between the desire to date the man and the suspicion to arrest him.

From the initial killing in the park, a bloody spree is ignited that soon has Andee and Lloyd forced to work together to protect themselves and family members.

Shadow of the Moon explores the world of werewolves and paints a picture of what is good about them, as well as bad. The story explains what is beautiful as well as ugly about the wolf.

The story is fast paced and full of interesting characters and several twists and turns to keep both the fantasy as well as the suspense and romance enthusiasts entertained.

Excerpt:
“I’m Professor
Lloyd’s assistant. Is he expecting you?” Her smile never wavered, though the
hand dropped to her side.

“No, as I said,
I’m with the FBI, and we don’t normally make appointments.”

Miranda, with
smile still in place, walked to the door leading to the professor’s office as
she said, “Let me check with him, but I’m sure he will be able to meet with
you. I keep his appointment calendar, so I know he’s not overly busy.”

“Hey, I was here
first, and I’ve waited thirty minutes.”

Trakes turned
back to the office and noticed a blonde had stood to announce her displeasure.
She tried to show her indignation with the agent, but her glare fell short.

Trakes smiled at
the student and held out her FBI credentials for the blonde to see.

“I’m with the
FBI, sweetie. We get cuts.”

Behind her, she
heard Miranda say, “Sit down, Shelly, you know as well as I do the professor
won’t change your grade.”

Trakes turned
back to Miranda and waved the credentials one more time.

“These are
really the only announcement I need, but thank you. I’ll just pop in. Then the
professor and I will get acquainted.”

Before Miranda
could object, the agent turned and stepped through the door.

Her first impression
of the office was the desk. It was large, made of wood and appeared antique.
The floor was wood, with a large rug that covered most of it. Like the outer
office, this one was also wainscoted with dark wood paneling. Opposed to the
other space, this one was painted an off-white the rest of the way to the
10-foot ceiling. Again, keeping with the theme set by the outer office, this
one also had pictures and paintings on every wall. Bookcases, shelves and glass
cases flanked the desk, with two chairs centered in front of it. A two-person
sofa along the wall to the left and a coffee table finished the décor.
Professor Lloyd sat behind the desk.

He studied
papers with his head lowered, and her first glimpse of him took in the breadth
of his shoulders and his hair. It was thick and dark, almost black down the
center of the head, but shaded to grey by the time it reached the man’s ears.
It was combed back, but a natural part down the center caused it to fall to
each side. She wondered what it felt like, then forced herself to refocus.

As she stepped
through the door, Trakes announced, “Good afternoon, I’m…”

He looked up
from his papers.

The eyes were a
pale blue. Ice blue. The shade of blue used to sell breath mints, and her
intake of air seemed fresher as it travelled to her lungs. The eyes were hard
and unwelcoming. Andee wished she had waited to be announced. She stepped into
the room and tripped on the edge of the rug. She whispered a curse, caught her
balance, held her blush to a minimum and muttered an apology.

“I’m sorry. I
shouldn’t have…”

Those eyes,
still focused on her, softened enough to indicate his irritation at the
interruption had grown into a mild curiosity. As he studied her, he allowed an
eyebrow to raise and his head to cant to one side. She suddenly felt exposed,
and her blush from the ungainly entry deepened. Her heart paused, and then
quickened. Her stomach tickled, then settled into nervousness. Her underarms
damped and a question about deodorant flashed through her mind. She tried again
to introduce herself, but discovered she had forgotten her name.

“Professor,
I’m…a…I’m…”

Her words came
in a small squeak. It may have been the squeak a mouse makes when she sees the
hawk dive, but it was certainly the squeak of prey. She froze. The corners of
his mouth turned.

“Uncle Alwyn,
you stop this. Stop it, right now.”

The commands
came from Miranda, and the professor looked past Trakes to his niece, who was
standing in the doorway. As he broke eye contact, Andee gulped air. She
realized she’d forgotten to breathe.

“Uncle Alwyn,
I’m ashamed of you,” Miranda continued, and she took Andee’s arm and assisted
her to one of the chairs in front of the desk. Andee smiled her gratitude as
she felt dizzy. She looked up at the assistant, who smiled down at her.

“Don’t mind my
uncle. He does that sometimes. It’s because he is an Alpha.”

“He’s a what?”

Andee felt as if
she was clearing a fog.

“He’s an Alpha,
and sometimes he takes advantage.”

“An Alpha? Is
that a fraternity?”

About the Author:

Winner of Readers' Favorite Silver Award for Historical Fiction/Western, Kwen knew he wanted to be a writer when he was fourteen years old. He felt the urge when he finished Earnest Hemingway’s masterpiece “For Whom The Bell Tolls.” The story touched him in a way no other book ever had. It transported a kid born and raised on a farm and ranch in Idaho to the mountains of Spain. It took him back in time forty years to witness the Spanish Civil War. Kwen knew he wanted to share that wonder with other people.

John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you make other plans.” While Kwen lived a full and varied life, his dream of writing remained in the back of his mind.

Finally, in 2012, he wrote a novella named Dear Emma. He self-published through Amazon and asked people to read it. “The best way to see if I can write is to let people check it out,” he said. Like it, they did. Currently, Dear Emma enjoys a 4.8 out of 5 stars rating on Amazon.

Often asked what genre he writes, Kwen replies he writes stories about people and uses the genre that best fits the story. “I think of the genre, or setting as another character that interacts to help tell the story,” he says.

His most often received and constant comment is how real his characters seem. Upon the completion of his historical fiction trilogy Sam and Laura books, a reader telephoned Kwen and directed him to write more stories about the couple. When asked why the reader was so adamant about more stories, he replied he “wasn’t ready to tell Sam and Laura good bye yet.”
Kwen considers that comment one of his highest compliments.

Kwen’s books are getting some attention from the literary community. The Law of Moses, the Silver Award winner from Readers' Favorite, and The Tenth Nail both received the Gold Award from Literary Titan Book Review. In addition, The Law of Moses was awarded five 5 Star Reviews from the reviewers of Readers' Favorite.

Kwen’s books are available in several formats; e-Book, paperback, and audio. He invites you to check his writings out. Who knows? He might become your next favorite author.

Interview with Kwen D Griffeth
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
The idea that is initially formed for a story I call a nugget.  It’s little more than a thought.  That nugget can come from a song, a dream, a conversation of even something seen while passing.  The point is, the nugget, which I keep a list of, stews in my mind, sometimes for months before a story starts to emerge.  In my case, once a story starts to form, I switch me though process and start to create and identify the characters that will tell the story.

How did you do research for your book?
Thank Heaven for the internet.  Shadow of the Moon is the story of werewolves being forced to interact with full humans.  I researched all the stories I could to form a basis for how the werewolf came to be.  How did a homosapien become a homolupis?  What is the world population of werewolves?  I also studied the social order of wolves thinking the werewolves would to some extend mirror that activity.  I wanted a fantastical creature to become as real as I could make it.

Do you have another profession besides writing?
Currently, writing and marketing is my full time profession.  Writing is the fun and creative part, but the marketing is the work part.  It’s one thing to write a book, something totally different to tell people about it.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
Because I am a history nerd, almost any time would be an adventure.  Not too sure about visiting the black death, but...  If I was allowed to choose a time I would want to go back to pre-revolution in the American colonies.  I’d like to discuss and debate with the men and women who came up with the idea we call America.

What is your next project?
Just yesterday, I finished book 3 in a police drama series I write and now, I get to start on book 2 in this series which is called “Reflections of the Moon.”

Trust me, even though I’ve had a silver spoon in my mouth since I was a fetus and have a world-famous pop diva as a sister, there is nothing I want more in the world than to fade into the background and live out my Law & Order fantasy of becoming a public defender.

The only problem is my dad won’t bankroll law school unless I spend the summer following my older sister on her arena tour, keeping her out of trouble and making sure she doesn’t have yet another embarrassing public meltdown. Now relegated to a glorified babysitter, I am stuck lugging my ten-pound LSAT prep books through hotel lobbies and taking practice tests in my sister’s dressing rooms.

Then I find myself caught in a love triangle with my sister’s arch nemesis, bad boy popstar Jordan James and Liam, my sister’s confusing and irritatingly gorgeous Scottish bodyguard. Too bad I’ve sworn off love after seeing my own parent’s train wreck of marriage end with heartache and misery.

I’m tired of living under my family’s careful rules and law school is my way out. I won’t let anything get in my way. I won’t let anyone close enough to break down my walls. I have to guard my heart.

“Gabby?”

When I hear my name, my eyes pop open and I feel the rush of blood to my cheeks. Jordan has stopped playing and is looking right at me. Dear God, I must look like such a stalker.

“I’m so sorry,” I manage to stammer out. “I heard you playing and it was so beautiful." I turn to leave, offering him an apologetic smile. "You know, I’m just going to go.”

“Wait!” Jordan calls out and I turn back around, pushing the door to the room open. I take a deep breath and slowly enter the room, taking a seat on the couch opposite his chair.

“Well, did you like it?” Jordan asks, his stunning blue eyes looking at me.

I find myself nodding. “It was beautiful, but…”

“But?”

“Well, to be honest, it felt a little sad.”

He doesn’t respond right away, but instead looks at me thoughtfully before chuckling. “It’s my ode to Hollywood,” he responds dryly.

I look at him curiously. “Jordan, why don’t you record songs like that?”

Leaning back in his chair, he moves the guitar off his lap. “No one wants to hear songs like this. They want to hear about pretty girls and fancy cars. They don’t want to hear how I really feel.”

I let out a long sigh. “That’s so sad, Jordan.”

Catching my eye, Jordan smiles. “Do you feel sorry for me, Gabby?”

“No!” I answer instantly before admitting, “Well, actually, maybe a little.”

He leans in, closing the distance between us. “I like that you’re always honest with me. That’s something I don’t get a lot.” He smacks his palms on his thighs and winks at me before continuing, “And since I’ve got you feeling sorry for me, how about you let me take you out to dinner?”
