Shifter School by Gwendolyn Druyor

Shifter School
by Gwendolyn Druyor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Urban Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

She’s gonna get them all killed.

So they locked her away.

Laylea has been hiding her entire life. She’s never been to school. She’s never had a friend her own
age. She’s never known anyone else like her.

All that is about to change.

In a world hidden from wyrdos and humans alike, shifters are still recovering from a vicious plot to
destroy them all. They have two laws they live by now:

1) Hide

2) Protect the children at all costs.

Laylea has just broken rule number one. But she’s only fourteen. So they’re sending her to school.
Where she’s going to learn . . .

Anyplace can be a prison.

The Lincoln Park Shifter School is not your grandma’s uber-secret, underground academy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
A long, shrill scream drew Laylea back into the zoo. The guard who didn’t want to be called Beta was
backing away from a tall black man in jeans, a button-down, and Fox sandals.
“Kyle!” Laylea screamed his name even as she heard KC screaming hers. “Kyle! You’re a good man!
Think of Jeannie and KJ!”
The vampire looked her way. His familiar, affable smile appeared and he waved at her. “We’re just
gonna have a talk. Get back to school, you reprobate.”
Then the smile melted away as though it had never been and Kyle stalked out of sight.
“Lee, come on.” KC yanked her out the entrance.
“No,” She tried to pull away but KC was strong. “I have to help him.”
“No one can help that guy now.”
Tears poured down Laylea’s face. KC was right. If Kyle had already killed a pack of werewolves, Laylea
wasn’t going to be able to stop him from killing one guard. But she had to try. She hadn’t spent the last
seven months hiding him from Dee and Morioka and everyone else just to give up on Kyle now. “I can.”
She yanked her arm out of KC’s grip and they both fell on the uneven steps of the plinth.
Interview with Gwendolyn Druyor
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
It’s so hard to choose, T! I love when the boogeyman surprises Laylea with a gift and when the werewolf girl at the Electronics Store gets Laylea’s back. But maybe my favorite bit is the game Laylea organizes in the underground Jungle. She pulls it together to cheer up her friend, to give KC something she needs but never imagined she could actually have. Also, imagine two dozen shifter kids (selkies, chimps, pythons, panthers, tigers, gorillas, and a dryad!) playing Capture the Flag through a magical jungle! But there’s also the sacrifice Oscar makes so that Laylea can save the school. Oh, I can’t pick. I pick them all!
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
Laylea, definitely. I’d want her to show me the Chicago she knows. I’m sure she’s familiar with all the tunnels and secret places that Wyrdos hang out. I want to see all that. AND I want to go to The Office and get a mug of glög from Seb.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
I am in awe of Neal Stephenson. I’m not sure I’d want to have written his books, I think he must be a little mad to be able to write so beautifully and with such intelligence. Anne McCaffrey created characters who are still very real to me. She made me cry and taught me that love is universal, no matter the form it takes. Terry Pratchett gives the world so much joy and laughter. I choose Geoffrey’s Queen. I AM the author of that book and I’m proud of it. I wouldn’t dare take a book away from anyone else.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Some are inspired by real people. Laylea has the good qualities of two of my favorite people in the universe. Bailey has some of the negative qualities of one of those same people. There is a real person in my life right now who is too unbelievably self-centered to put into a book, but the next bad guy in Shifter School 2, Shifter Blood, is definitely going to harken to this asshat . . . (Can I swear on your blog?) fellow.
5. What made you want to become a writer?
Reading made me want to write. It still does. I love stories. I find it magical that my brain has created all these characters in a world not entirely like our own. I find it awe-inspiring that thousands of these worlds exist and I can dive into them, simply by opening a book. I want to be a part of this ever-expanding universe. That’s why I write.
Thanks for having me, T! I hope you enjoy reading Shifter School!
Excerpt:
He’s gorgeous in an underwear model sort of way. At least until you reach his eyes. When the light reflected off them, I almost stepped back. They’re pale green, almost startling if you don’t look into their cold, lifeless depths. Pools of darkness lurked in the round orbs, so strong, it scared the fucking shit out of me. I’ve grown up around deadly men, but none left me trembling and wanting to escape the intensity of just a gaze.
I make a frustrated sound deep in my throat. I need to escape so I never have to look into his eyes again. Pounding the metal loop in the floor with my foot only adds to the raw flesh already there. He’s going to kill me for something my brother did. The worthless, evil, blood kin I’ve dreamed of killing for years. If only I were stronger emotionally and physically. Or maybe not. Given the chance, I’ll kill the man holding me.
I’ve thought about my own death so many times through the years I lost track. I shouldn’t be resisting the inevitable end to my life. My brother’s plans for me would pale in comparison. He’s told me often enough that I’m nothing more than a breeding machine to form better alliances.
Being given to one of the men my brother makes alliances with would be a nightmare worse than death and it’s all I’ve had to look forward to since my sixteenth birthday. That’s when the earnest threats began. To die for my brother’s sins is an ironic twist to a fucked up life I wish I couldn’t claim.
Guest Post with Holly S. Roberts:
Why Romance?
I breathe romance. Maybe it comes from marrying my high school sweetheart who I fell in love with at the age of twelve. He took a little longer to convince. That was many, many years ago and we’re still in love. Before I became a police officer, I owned a bookstore in Phoenix, AZ. Romance books kept my children fed and clothed and I can’t say that about any other genre. I don’t care what the story is or what genre it’s written for, if there’s no relationship, I don’t want to read it. Call me a snob and I’ll agree. Romance doesn’t just make the world go around, it’s in every part of our lives. Anyone who disses on romance is dissing on their unsatisfied life. Romance readers are the most well-adjusted group on the planet. You want to argue? Bring it.
Mary Queen of the Scots: The Forgotten Reign The Legendary Women of World History Book 3
Mary
Queen of the Scots:
The
Forgotten Reign
The
Legendary Women of World History Book 3
80
pages
Queen
Mary Stuart was one of the most beloved and controversial women in
Scottish history. The granddaughter of King James IV and his wife
Margaret Tudor, Queen Mary's status as heiress-apparent to Queen
Elizabeth's throne in England paired with the violence of the
Scottish Reformation set the stage for one of the most dramatic and
poorly understood lives of the 16th century.
Mary
Queen of the Scots tells Mary's true story, focusing primarily on her
reign as queen of Scotland, celebrating her life more than her death
and showing us all why she was truly a woman ahead of her
time.
Features
a detailed timeline, a list of Latin prayers with their English
translations, and the lyrics to all four featured period songs
performed in the book.
Queen
Elizabeth Tudor:
Journey
to Gloriana
The
Legendary Women of World History Book 4
90
pages
I
am by your Council from you commanded to go to the Tower, a place
more wanted for a false traitor than a true subject, which though I
know I desire it not, yet in the face of all this realm it appears
proved,” wrote Princess Elizabeth Tudor in her eleventh-hour letter
to sister Queen Mary as guards waited to transport her to the prison
at the Tower of London.
Queen
Elizabeth is perhaps the most legendary and celebrated ruler in
English history. Yet do you really know her as well as you think you
do?
In
this beautiful narrative biography you explore Elizabeth’s path
from “Lady Elizabeth” to “Gloriana” through the lens of her
relationship with Robert Dudley, a relationship far more contentious
than most people believe. Politics and religion collide, provoking
Elizabeth to console herself with her music, and a hard decision lays
before her as plots against her life threatens her throne.
Take
the journey to Gloriana and discover a side to Elizabeth you never
knew existed.
Features
six medieval and Elizabethan songs, a detailed timeline, and an
extensive suggested reading list. Continues "Mary Queen of the
Scots."
