A CHOICE OF CROWNS A Dark Glass Novel Book #2 by Barb Hendee

A CHOICE OF CROWNS
A Dark Glass Novel
Book #2
by
Barb Hendee
Genre: Historical Fantasy

Olivia Geroux knew her king was
reluctant to marry her, whatever the negotiations had arranged. But
she never expected to find handsome, arrogant King Rowan obsessed
with his stepsister instead. And before she can determine what course
to take, she overhears her greatest ally plotting to murder the
princess.
Olivia must act quickly—and live with
whatever chaos results. As the assassin hunts his prey, a magic
mirror appears to show Olivia the three paths that open before her .
. .
If she hesitates only a moment, the
princess will die—and she will become queen.
If she calls for help, she will gain
great power—but she must also thrust away her own happiness.
If she runs to stop the murder herself,
she will know love and contentment—but her whole country will
suffer.
As she lives out each path, her wits
and courage will be tested as she fights to protect her people, her
friends, and her heart. And deciding which to follow will be far from
easy . . .

I’ve heard it said the most important moments in one’s life pass more swiftly than others. Perhaps it’s true.
I only know that all my senses were on alert as soon as my father sent for me, asking me to come to his private rooms. Eighteen years old, I’d never once been invited to his rooms. In the past several weeks, he’d been closeted away much of the time, sending and receiving messages, but I had no idea what this was about—as he didn’t see fit to share such intelligence with me.
Now…he wanted to see me, in his rooms?
I could hardly refuse, nor in fact did I want to. I was curious.
Gathering my long green skirt, I nodded curtly to the servant who’d delivered the message and made my way to the base of the east tower of our family keep. I knew exactly where his rooms were located, even if I’d never been inside.
Upon arriving, I stood with my back straight and knocked on the door.
“Father? You sent for me.”
“Come,” he said from the other side.
With my hand shaking only slightly, I opened the door. Inside, I found a somewhat austere main room that appeared to be a study, with a large desk and chair. There were tapestries of forest scenes on the walls, and an interior door led to a bedroom.
My father, Hugh Géroux, sat behind his desk working on what appeared to be a letter, but he stood as I entered. In his early fifties, he still cut a striking figure, with a smooth-shaven face, dark hair with a sprinkling of gray, and dark eyes.
“Olivia,” he said, as if meeting me for the first time.
We didn’t know each other well, as I was the fifth and youngest of his children. I had two older brothers and two older sisters, and my father had used all four of them carefully to enhance his own wealth and prestige. My mother died of a fever when I was only seven, so my father raised us alone in a manner that was both distant and overbearing at the same time.
My family, the line of Géroux, was among the old nobility of the kingdom. While past famines and civil wars had destroyed several of the ancient families, ours survived. We were survivors. My father respected strength and nothing else.
His eyes moved dispassionately from my feet to my face, as if assessing me. I knew only too well what he saw. I was tall for a woman. He was tall, and I could almost look him directly in the eyes. Unfortunately, the current fashion for women was petite and fragile. My hair was long and thick, but it was a shade of burnished red, and again, red hair was not currently in fashion.
Still, I’d been raised to remain sharply aware of everything going on around me, and it was no secret that most men found me desirable. My face had often been called pretty, with clear skin and slanted eyes of green. I looked best in green velvet.
Though I was not vain, I had also been raised to understand that survival was based on value, and at some point, I’d be given a chance to prove myself valuable. Had that chance finally come?
“You’ll need to pack tonight,” he said. “You leave for Partheney in the morning.”
In spite of my careful awareness of self-control, I nearly gasped. “Partheney?”
This was the king’s city. My family’s lands were in the southeast corner of the kingdom. Partheney was in the northwest, near the coast of the sea. I had never been there.
“You’re to marry King Rowan,” my father said flatly. “His mother, the dowager queen, and I have arranged it.”
I stood still as his words began to sink in, but I still couldn’t quite follow what he was trying to convey. “King Rowan…the dowager queen…is this why you’ve been receiving so many messages?”
His eyes flashed, and I dropped my gaze, cursing myself. Father did not brook questions from his children. He expected only two things from us: strength and obedience. But the slight shaking in my hands grew to a tremble. Had I heard him correctly? I was to marry the king?
Stepping around the desk, he approached me. “Do you know anything of the rumors surrounding King Rowan?”
Unfortunately, I did, hence the reason my hands trembled. Even here, in the isolated southeast, rumors still reached us. In his late twenties, Rowan de Blaise was a young king and had held the throne for only two years. But over those two years, four betrothals with foreign princesses had been arranged via proxy. Envoys had been sent to Partheney to finalize negotiations. In all four cases, when the envoys arrived, Rowan refused to even see them. He’d sent them away.
“I know some of the stories,” I answered my father. “I know betrothals have been arranged, and he’s sent the envoys packing.”
“Yes.” My father nodded. “His mother, the dowager, was the one who arranged the betrothals. She is anxious to see him married and founding a line of heirs.”
“Why will he not marry?”
My father waved one hand in the air. “That is of no matter. What matters is, the dowager has decided to stop seeking a foreign princess and marry him into one of our own noble families. She’s wise and has chosen the line of Géroux. We’ll be linked to royalty, and I’ll be the grandfather of kings.”
The truth of all this hit me, and my hands ceased trembling. I would be queen.
Clearly there were obstacles, but I allowed my initial worries to vanish and let my mind flow. Father expected complete success from himself and would expect nothing less of me. This thought made me brave. “If Rowan has refused to even see the envoys,” I began, “what makes you and the dowager think he will agree to entertain negotiations this time?”
My question was bold, but instead of growing angry, Father only looked at me as if I were simple—which I was not.
“Because as I said, you will leave in the morning,” he answered. “I’m not sending envoys. I have no faith in envoys. I’m sending you. You’ll go to the castle, meet the king, and handle negotiations yourself. You are a daughter of the Géroux. He cannot turn you away.”
“You’ll not come with me?”
“No. That was my first instinct, but the dowager believes it best if the king is given no choice in facing you directly. It will force him to be…polite.” His expression darkened. “And you will not fail to secure him. Do you understand? You will not fail.”
I met his eyes without flinching.
“I understand.”

I'm
a bad ass bitch. It's a truth of mine. I live it and breathe that
shit. No, I'm not conceited or full of myself. It's just something
I've discovered over the years.

I'm
damn good by myself, always have been, always will. What I didn't
know is I can be improved upon.
Enter
the equally bad ass and hella charismatic Deckard Camden. Who, the
hell, told him to be this jaw-droppingly gorgeous, mountain of a man,
in comparison to my little self, projecting a wall of defense that
rivals my own?
Nobody
prepared me for the sensual words that would fall from his lips or
the massive ... peace he would bring to my life.
Damn
sure didn't get me ready to be Deckard Camden's wife … wait what?

Excerpt 2
Hey Bliss!”
Bliss?”
Three voices sing out in chorus simultaneously. With two words, I’m glad that the only people in the room are my friends, idiots that they are. Taking in the expressions on their faces maybe I’m not happy they are here to hear his nickname for me.
Yes, Bliss. He calls me bliss,” I say in my best snarky voice. To him, I say, “Excuse me just a moment. I’ll be right back.”
I tilt my head towards the back room silently telling them to follow me. All of them dutifully do as I’ve requested. I know the only reason they aren’t protesting is because they’re all nosy, busy bodies. Once we’re in the lounge area, I turn to face them.
Yeah, so he calls me bliss.”
Once again this time with a little less of the signature Max cynicism,” Charise commands while pouring herself a cup of coffee.
What we want to know is how the name came about,” Samuel tells me while batting his stupidly long eyelashes at me.
Yeah, we he said,” Yasmeen pulls her long dark braid back and wraps it until it’s in a bun.
You’ll leave me alone after I explain.”
We’ll have to because he’s obviously here to take you to breakfast,” Zoe fluffs her curly puffs at the top of her head. “I, for one, am damn sure not going to wait until after he feeds you.”

EXCERPT (Shadows of Asphodel):

Wendel wasn’t in the cabin. After checking the dining car, Ardis ventured reluctantly into the lounge car. Judging by the forest green carpet, leather chairs, and lingering scent of cigars, the lounge was meant to be a bastion of masculinity. But this early in the morning, there were no gentlemen to request that she leave at once.
Discounting, of course, Wendel—though she wasn’t sure he was a gentleman.
The necromancer sprawled in a chair, a glass of green-gold liquid in his hand. He sipped his drink, then smiled languidly at Ardis.
“Please,” he said, “sit.”
She remained standing, and frowned.
“What are you drinking?” she said.
“Absinthe.”
“Why?”
Wendel lifted the bottle to his face to inspect its contents. The color of the liquor within resembled his eyes remarkably.
“You heard the medic,” he said. “Plenty of fluids.”
Ardis sighed. “Not those kind of fluids. Alcohol isn’t a good idea.”
“Why not?” He sipped his drink. “It helps to dull the pain.”
She reached across and took the bottle of absinthe from the side table, then helped herself to a glass. She kept the bottle. Clearly, he didn’t

need any more. The absinthe scorched her throat, and she winced at the burn of alcohol.
“Not bad,” she rasped, and she swallowed a cough.
“Brave of you.” He dipped his head. “I never drink absinthe straight.”
She glanced at his glass, and realized his drink was indeed paler than her own.
“May I recommend a little sugar to cut the bitterness?” he said.
Blushing, Ardis spotted a bowl of sugar cubes on the table, alongside a carafe of ice water and a slotted silver spoon. She remembered there was a ritual for drinking absinthe properly, though she didn’t know how.
“To tell you the truth,” she said, “this is my first time.”
Wendel arched one eyebrow. “An absinthe virgin?”
She grimaced at his choice of words. “Not anymore.”
“You don’t drink much, do you?”
She shook her head. “I don’t drink fancy booze.”
“Booze.” He smirked. “Absinthe is too upper crust to be booze.”
Ardis smiled tightly. “And I suppose you know a lot about the upper crust?”
He shrugged and swirled the absinthe in his glass.
“Perhaps the House of Hohenzollern?” she said.
Wendel looked at her over his glass. “Who told you that? Konstantin?”
“He did,” she said. “Is he wrong?”
“No.”
She drank more absinthe, and rolled its fire on her tongue.
“Do you want to tell me more?” she said.
A strange look passed over Wendel’s face like a shadow. He set down his glass too hard, and it wobbled before he steadied it with a finger. He mustered something resembling a smile, but she saw the darkness in his eyes.
“What does Konstantin think he knows?” he said.
“He said the Order of the Asphodel has been training a necromancer since he was a boy. But he didn’t say much more than that.”
“The archmages really should hire better spies.”
“What kind of training?” she said, testing him.
Wendel’s false smile vanished. He looked out of the window at the sunrise creeping between the clouds and the fog.
“One more day,” he said, “until Vienna.”
“Do you have family in Vienna?” she said.
He knocked back the last of his absinthe. “No.”
She held out the bottle to him, but he ignored it.
“I don’t exist, Ardis,” he said. “Not to them. You won’t find me on any of their family trees. I’m not a part of their lineage anymore. If I die, they will have an easier time erasing me from their reputations. An easier time forgetting.”
Ardis was distantly aware of her heartbeat thumping, and of a tightness in her throat.
“When a necromancer dies,” she said, “does he die like a normal man?”
Wendel’s eyes glittered with a molten emotion she couldn’t name. She found it hard to look at him, but she didn’t dare look away.
“God,” he said, “I hope so.”
She still held the bottle of absinthe out to him, and when he took it from her, the very tips of his fingers touched hers. A shiver of electricity skittered down her backbone, as if she could feel the latent necromancy in his skin.
For some strange reason, she wanted to touch him again.
Ardis fought the urge, until Wendel looked away and she glimpsed a split second of his face. He was struggling to hide his fear, and this made him look more vulnerable than she had ever seen him before. Deliberately, her muscles tense, she sat in the chair opposite him and touched the back of his hand.
Wendel’s stare snapped to her fingers. “What are you doing?”
“Trying to touch you,” she said.
He looked into her eyes, and his own were inscrutable. “Don’t.”

My review: 3 1/2 *

I like a good cozy mystery now and then. This one was ok it wasn't great but I will be going back for book 2 before I decide my true feelings on the series. Meredith Potts takes us to the tiny town Treasure Cove CA. We meet Sabrina. She runs the family coffee shop and is dating David a police detective. When the owner of the Chocolate shop next to Sabrina's coffee shop is murdered, Sabrina steps in to help solve the murder.

Sabrina's character could use some improvement. Yes she solves the murder in the end but at the cost of alienating herself from half the town. The way she goes after her suspects and her line of questioning as well as her attitude just made her rude and not very likable to me. The book is very fast paced. The book starts off 10 years earlier when her sister comes up missing and has not been any clues to date. I am assuming this has part to do with her attitude. A lot of the book centers on her feelings towards the disappearance. I do hope in future books that mystery is solved. The book does leave a lot of loose ends on other things brought up during the book. Some of the characters just seemed tossed in with no true spot in the story, so hopefully in later books they will have established rolls. i do read a lot of series and never fully make up my mind abotu a series in book 1. A lot of times book one just basically establishes everyones rolls in later books and that is what I am hoping for.

I did listen to the Audiobook, which is narrated by Lainie Pahos. She done a good job with the story. She let me now when someone was happy, sad, or had other emotions from the tone of her voice.  Some of her voices she used grated on my nerves a bit, luckily those people had small parts in the story.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Meredith Potts. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Narrator Lainie Pahos

  • How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    • I am an actor/singer and wanted to make money on my own time doing what I'm trained to do! It's a fun gig to do on the side!
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating?
    • I take lots of breaks! I only record for an hour at a time and then I will do push ups or sit ups or take my dog for a walk or something (I'm also a personal trainer so sitting and talking all day is hard for me!) When I come back from that I'm ready to go for another hour!
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Yea! I listen to Audible a lot! I like to listen in the car or at the gym. I am very busy so it's hard for me to find time to sit down and read so I multitask!
  • What are your favorite and least favorite parts of narrating an audiobook?
    • I love getting to act and try out different character voices! It's a great way to use the skills that help me in my career.
    • Sitting for so long!! I need to take breaks and stay active! And it's hard on the voice too. Lots of tea with honey!
  • How did you decide how each character should sound in this title?
    • I look at the text and get context clues of where they're from or what they've been through and if the text doesn't say much then I invent a backstory for them!
  • What types of things are harmful to your voice?
    • Shouting and low voices. Many books written by men have a lot of male characters I find it difficult to record for long periods of time when I have to do so many different male voices.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • Oh, I'd absolutely use it!! I think I'd go back to different eras and see some of my favorite singers perform!
  • If you could narrate one book from your youth what would it be and why?
    • The Silverwing series. I just remember loving those little bat books so much!!
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I'd say that's incredibly dumb! Some people are auditory learners and they'll get more out of it if they listen to it. Other people have dyslexia and can't read very well. Plus some actors can bring books to life in a way someone who finds reading boring can't themselves. Some people are too busy to set time aside to read so they multitask with audiobooks. Everyone's situation is different and no one has a right to judge how others take in their entertainment.
  • Bonus question: Any funny anecdotes from inside the recording studio?
    • I have a very large selection of burps recorded should anyone need them for an animated series! And puppy sounds as well. I'm a "take your dog to work" kind of person!

***

3 October

New York
It’s not over. It’s not.
Loren Mackenzie let out a sigh, her eyes following the blinking lights of a jetliner as it disappeared into the distance over Kennedy International Airport. He’s just going back to work in California and I’m going home, to England. She let out an even longer sigh. Just two more races and I get to take a real break. How perfect would it be to just go lie on a beach somewhere with him.
Her gaze refocused on the reflection of a man approaching her in the window; his long, confident stride and athletic form quickened her pulse. She turned to face him, but her smile dissolved into a hard frown when he was stopped by a group of fawning teenagers, begging for autographs and selfies with him.
Yep, I had to fall in love with an A-list actor. As Graham Atherton separated himself from the group to continue toward her, Loren forced a smile, but it didn’t stick as he stopped again to become engrossed in his mobile. He looked up from the screen to continue on his way.
“Sorry about that, love,” he said to her. “Just a text from Ron. He said he’ll ring you when he gets into London to discuss setting up a meeting. Is that alright with you?”
She squinted an eye. “So I have people now?”
“I do come as somewhat of a package deal. All that, you know.” He thumbed at the disbursing crowd behind him. “And Ron’s a bit more than just my agent,” he said. “He’s my best mate and I trust him.”
“That’s nice of him to offer.” She turned back to the window as Graham came up behind and wrapped his arms around her.
“Talk to me, love.”
“It’s just, this is the longest we’ve been physically together, and I don’t want it to end.” Her shoulders drooped. “I’m sorry I’m whining. I’m just tired.”
“No, darling, you’re not just tired,” he murmured. “You’ve been completely shat on.” He kissed her neck then tightened his arms around her. “You won the time trial Championship in Richmond, but you had to put up with all the nonsense from the press. And then losing the road race, which even that BBC reporter, Theo Arnold agrees was not your fault.” Graham came around to face her with pinched brows.
“But if that weren’t enough, you had to deal with me throwing your past in your face.” He cupped her cheek. “I still feel awful for that, and I want to help you, but I have no idea how.” Loren kissed him, then put her arms around his waist and held him close.
“I just want this, and more of it when I see you again.” He gave her a squeeze then drew away to glance around them. “Graham?”
“Grab your bag and come with me.” He bent to pick up their carry-ons, then led her to a private seating area, far away from prying ears and eyes. He took a seat on the small sofa across from her and held her hand with both of his.
“Darling, I know how hard it was for you and your aunt to talk about what happened to your mother and sister, and I’m awfully proud of you for doing that,” Graham said and glanced down at their clasped hands. “I also know Maggie gave you all of the photos and documents she found in the attic, and you have the file my father’s man put together.” He grimaced. “I want to ask that you don’t look through all that again by yourself.”
“Is that all?” she chuckled softly. “Here I thought you wanted to have a quickie or something.” His stare was somewhere between being shocked and wanting to laugh; his laugh won.
“I love you.” But his mirth it died out as his bright blue eyes studied her. “I have a present for you, and I wanted to save this for your birthday, but it’s burning a hole in my pocket.” He removed a small red velvet box from his jacket and her jaw dropped.
“What are you doing?” she whispered.
He leaned in closer, smirking. “I’m not asking; I’m giving. That’s all.” Her hands shook as she took the box and opened it. Nestled inside was a platinum ring of two clasped hands holding a red stone shaped like a heart, capped with a crown.
“It’s a Claddagh. I’ve always wanted one,” she said, smiling at him. “What’s the stone?”
“It’s a garnet,” he replied. Taking it out of the box, he slipped it on her left ring finger, the hands facing outward. Graham held her gaze as tightly as her hand. “With this crown, I pledge to you my loyalty. With these hands, I offer you my service, and with this heart, I give you mine.”
Loren couldn’t speak as her brain reset. “I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything, love. The stunned look on your face says it all,” he chuckled, but her eyes welled up.
“I didn’t want to cry in public, dammit,” she hiccupped, covering her mouth. He pulled her to sit on his lap, brushing her tears from her cheeks, but Loren frowned at him. “You had this with you the whole time we were together, and you’re just giving it to me now?”
“Well, yes and no,” he countered. “It belonged to my great-grandmother, so I’ve had it for a while, but it needed to be resized. It’s a complicated process, you know.” She kissed him then moved off his lap to the sofa but kept her legs draped over one of his.
“It’s beautiful. Thank you.” She settled her head on his shoulder, breathing in his scent and grazing her lips against the scruff on his jaw. “I don’t want you to go,” she whispered.
“I don’t want to either, but we both have jobs to do.” Graham held her tighter. “I’ll be home before you can miss me.”
She squeezed her eyes closed to hold back the tears. I miss you already.
He cleared his throat. “Loren, about the file﹘.”
“Who am I going to talk to, other than you or Maggie?”
“You can’t talk to Cece about it?”
She shook her head. “How can I talk to her about something I’ve never told her?”
“Perhaps you should.”
Loren sighed. “I need to talk about all of this with my brother, my real brother,” she replied. “I need to find him.” Graham moved back to see her, his mouth curled down.
“I know I have no right to ask this of you, but will you wait until I come home to do that?”
“Yah, I can wait. Hell, I don’t even know where to start looking,” she grumbled, and he kissed her forehead.
“I do love nothing in the world so well as you,” he murmured.
“Je connais,” Loren whispered, sliding her arms around his neck and kissed him.

Author Bio:
Sara was born in the wee hours of a November night in New York City. When her family moved to a small borough in northwestern New Jersey, she had little choice but to move as well. Self-sufficiency is a tough thing for a toddler.
The dichotomy of being the middle child of three, but the only girl, was difficult, as typically no one really pays attention to a middle child. Mostly, Sara spent her time creating fanciful stories in her head when she should have been focused on other things, an issue that continues to this day.
Most of these stories have never been shared, let alone completed. This all changed in the spring of 2015, when Sara was encouraged by a friend to expand upon a short story she had accidentally emailed to him. The result is 'Wheeler’, a romantic, women's fiction/sport novel, which combines the author's romantic inclinations and her passion for cycling.
Sara currently resides in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, with her loving husband and their son. She is a paralegal for a boutique law firm in Chester County, Pa, an avid road cyclist and indoor cycling instructor at a national chain.

EXCERPT:

Shit!
Gabe gave his inbox a final glance, logged off, and rose from his desk. He glanced out of the panoramic windows to his left as he shrugged into his suit jacket.
Dusk cast red and orange streaks across the sky above Tokyo, the light washing through the glass and painting amber shadows on the crisp white walls of his office. He looked at his watch, cursed under his breath, and grabbed his bag.
He was five minutes late.
Gabe’s gaze collided with a curious stare as he turned toward the door. A man with dark blond hair and blue eyes stood watching him, one shoulder propped against the frame.
“Got plans for the weekend?” he drawled, cocking an elegant eyebrow.
Gabe smiled, hoping his restlessness didn’t show.
“Yes, I do.”
Rhys Damon studied him for a moment longer before letting out a sigh.
“Ah, to be in love and shacked up.”
Gabe felt his ears grow warm at his boss’s teasing expression.
“I wouldn’t go as far as that,” he mumbled.
“I thought you’d moved in with him,” Rhys said, surprise flashing in his blue gaze. “What’s it been? Six months?”
“I did, and it’s been six and a half,” Gabe muttered.
Not that I’m counting.
He swallowed a groan at Rhys’s sudden sly grin.
“I just sent you the final plans for the Hudson resort,” Gabe said. “Let me know—”
Rhys!” someone suddenly barked from across the expanse of the open-plan office space outside.
They turned and stared at the hulking, dark-haired man standing in the doorway of a glass room on the opposite side of the floor. Wade Tucker—the other brain behind the incredibly successful, multi-award-winning Chicago-based design firm currently taking Tokyo by storm—scowled at Rhys.
Rhys grimaced.
“It seems the big bad wolf has awakened.” He glanced at Gabe. “Quick, run before he sinks his teeth into you too.”
Gabe hurried toward the elevator and glanced over his shoulder at the two men facing each other stiffly across the empty office. He doubted he was the only one who had noticed the increasing tension between the firm’s partners over the last year.
Best friends since their college days, Rhys Damon and Wade Tucker had followed in each other’s footsteps throughout their early careers, often as rivals bidding for the same contracts. They’d finally set up shop as Damon & Tucker. Twelve years on and their company was now among the top twenty in the business for luxury interior design, consulting, and branding, catering to some of the most exclusive resorts and hotel chains around the world, as well as affluent private clients.
All thoughts of his bosses’ woes fled Gabe’s mind when he exited the lift and entered the lobby of the glass-and-steel edifice that housed the Tokyo branch of the firm.
A man stood leaning against a navy-blue Jaguar saloon parked at the curb outside, hands tucked in the pockets of his tailored suit and powerful legs crossed at the ankles. He seemed oblivious to the stares he was drawing from the passersby and office workers leaving the building, his eyes focused on the foyer.
Although the car was a stunning piece of art and engineering, Gabe knew it was its dark-haired owner who had captured the avid interest of the men and women openly ogling him.
Gabe’s pulse jumped when he met the man’s gunmetal stare through the glass wall. He still couldn’t quite believe that he was going out with Cam Sorvino, the king of one-night stands. His gaze dropped from Cam’s stunning face and full lips, to his stubbled jaw and hard physique.
Nor can I believe I’ve had sex with that gorgeous body.
Heat warmed Gabe’s cheeks when he recalled the last time they’d shared a bed.
It had been over a week ago, a fact that had obviously frustrated Cam as he barely let Gabe sleep that night. His job as an asset manager for one of the biggest investment firms in Asia had taken him to Singapore for most of the last month and he only returned to Tokyo on the weekends, often late on Saturday afternoons.
Though Gabe loved nothing more than being in Cam’s arms, he knew the commute was taking its toll on his lover, which was why he’d asked Cam to fly back early this week.
Cam’s gaze grew heavy-lidded as Gabe crossed the sidewalk and approached the car. Gabe knew that if it wasn’t for the people around them, Cam would have pulled him into his embrace and kissed him senseless. Gabe stifled a sigh, somewhat grateful for their audience.
Once they started touching each other, there would be no stopping them. And Cam’s libido had turned voracious as of late, his appetite not even remotely quenched until they’d had at least four rounds of toe-curling sex and Gabe’s voice was hoarse from crying and moaning in pleasure.
“I’ve packed us a couple of overnight bags, like you instructed,” Cam said in a smoky voice that sent tingles down Gabe’s spine as he opened the passenger door of the Jag. “So, where are we headed, Mr. Anderson?”
Gabe slipped onto the cream leather seat and waited until Cam climbed in beside him before giving him the address of the place he’d booked them in for the weekend.
Cam raised an eyebrow.
“The beach?” His lips curved. “Does this mean I get to see you in swim trunks?”
Gabe’s pulse skittered at the passionate gleam in the gray eyes watching him.
“It’s a hot springs, so, no.”
Cam grinned.
“Even better. You’ll be naked.”
Gabe rolled his eyes as Cam started the engine and steered the Jag around.
Although the drive to the Izu Peninsula took over two hours, the time flew by while they chatted about their week, soft jazz music playing from the speakers as the vehicle ate away the miles.
Cam’s eyes widened when he drove into the paved courtyard of the traditional Japanese inn sitting on the small spur of land jutting out from the coastline, the headlights briefly illuminating the golden stretch of sand leading to the Pacific Ocean. He parked the car, his gaze lingering on the open vista before switching to Gabe.
“Nice.”
Gabe smiled, a flutter of excitement sending his pulse racing at the night he’d planned for them.
“I’m glad you like it.”
They collected their bags from the trunk and headed for the entrance.
Cam hesitated when they reached the porch, his hand on the handle of the front door.
“You didn’t design this one too, did you?”
Gabe blinked. His ears grew hot as he suddenly recollected the exclusive Tokyo hotel where they’d first made love a year ago. It was where he’d also rather splendidly lost his cherry to the magnificent man beside him. Gabe’s cock twitched as he thought of that night. Though sex with Cam always blew his mind, their first time together was incredibly precious to Gabe.
It was Cam who had finally helped him overcome the trauma of his past, when he’d nearly been raped by five men who’d paid his then boyfriend to tape their vile acts on camera, leaving him unable to sleep with anyone for over eight years despite regularly seeing a therapist. The gentle yet passionate way Cam had made love to him that time, how Cam had engraved his touch and scent on Gabe’s body until he utterly and completely lost himself in the act, how he’d brought Gabe to one earth-shattering climax after another—all of it were priceless memories Gabe would take to his grave. Not that he would ever admit this to Cam.
Gabe chuckled at his lover’s guarded expression.
“No, I didn’t design this place.”
Relief flashed across Cam’s face.
“Good. I’d seriously feel as if I were committing blasphemy otherwise.” Cam sniffed. “Not that sex with you isn’t the most unholy, wicked thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. I mean, there’s some stuff we’ve done that I—”
“Shut up, Cam!” Gabe hissed, clamping a hand over Cam’s mouth as a hostess headed across the foyer toward them.
Cam grinned and licked Gabe’s palm. Gabe swallowed a groan at the tingle that shot through him.
This erotic asshole.
