Excerpt Two:
“So, what’s up? You don’t normally leave Jackson Hole unless its poker night,” Carter said, studying his friend.

Nothing but crumbs remained of Spencer’s sandwich, and now he was plowing through the homemade potato salad. Still holding his fork, he swallowed and said, “Me and the boys are concerned. The knuckleheads elected that I come speak with you.”

“About?” Carter questioned, his body tight and rigid in his seat. They’d discussed him. What the fuck for?

Spencer cocked his head, his black eyes unwavering as he said, “Dude, you haven’t been to the club in almost a year. That’s a record, especially for you. And I know for damn sure you don’t have any of the subs coming out to the ranch. That bunch couldn’t keep a secret to save lives, as lovely and entertaining as they are.”

“I’ve had a particularly busy year with the ranch. Just because I’m not attending the club, doesn’t mean I’m celibate,” Carter said, folding his arms across his chest—even though that was precisely what he’d become.

After a long draught of iced tea, Spencer replied, seeming to choose his words carefully. “Normally, I would buy that and not press you. But you forget, I know you. And you haven’t been the same since your visit to Pleasure Island last August. I know there was a sub—”

“Careful,” Carter uttered, his voice deadly serious. He did not want to rehash the island or talk about Jenna with anyone. Not when the mere thought of her made his heart ache.

“Fuck that. You’ve been moping for almost a year. You searched for her and couldn’t find her. It’s time you moved on. I’m saying this not out of spite but because I’m genuinely concerned,” Spencer said.

Carter grimaced and traced the line of a bead of moisture on his glass before he replied, “Look, I know I haven’t gone to the club lately. I will. I just—hell, Spencer, it’s the same old subs there. I realize your concern and while I appreciate it—”

“Just come, tonight even. It will do you some good to get out of the house for a night. You’re not a recluse but this past year you sure as shit have been acting like one.”

Had he? Deep down he knew Spencer was right. Carter needed to move on and forget about the past. Jenna was lost to him, forever. As bitter a pill as it was to swallow, short of hiring a private investigator to track her down, there was nothing he could do about it. He’d been standing still, letting life move on around him while his heart bled into the ground at the loss. And Jenna obviously didn’t want to be found because if she had, she would be here. At least, not by him.

“Fine. I’ll come this evening. So you and the rest of the idiot brigade will get off my case,” Carter agreed and shook his head. The thought of attending the club was about as appealing as watching paint dry, but he’d suffer through it.

Marrying the Wedding Crasher by Melinda Curtis

This bachelor’s pretend girlfriend just made a shocking discovery—

She’s pregnant!

Although they dated for only a month, Harley O’Hannigan just agreed to be Vince Messina’s plus-one at a Harmony Valley wedding. Big mistake, given her deepening feelings for the tall, dark, unavailable bachelor. And what about Vince’s long-buried family history? Then there’s the growing secret that could transform this pretend relationship into the real thing…

Praise for Melinda Curtis:

"Wonderfully entertaining!" Jayne Ann Krentz, NYT Bestseller (referring to Playing for Love)

"Reading Slade and Christine's story reminded me of why I enjoy romance. SEASON OF CHANGE has found a place on my keeper shelf!" Brenda Novak, NYT Bestseller

Excerpt Two
Harley opened the creaky door to her hot truck cab and climbed in. She missed her Lexus. She missed auto-start and powerful air-conditioning.
She turned the key in the ignition. Nothing. Not so much as a tick of the starter.
She missed reliability.
“Not today,” she muttered.
The truck was finicky. It didn’t like to run when the Houston temperature dropped to the thirties or in thunderstorms, but the day had been hot, the skies clear.
“Come on, baby,” she chided the old vehicle. Don’t leave me stranded with Mr. Carrots and that grin.
Vince, aka Mr. Carrots, locked up his tools and leaned on his truck, staring at hers.
Still nothing. Her backside was growing damp with sweat.
Vince walked toward her with the swagger of a man who knew what his purpose was in life. And, right now, that purpose was to rescue a damsel in distress. “Pop the hood.”
She did, hopping out and joining him at the grille. Not that she knew anything about engines. Her mechanical ability stopped at turning power tools off and on.
Vince tsked and gave Harley a look that disapproved and teased at the same time.
“Hey, don’t judge,” she said. “It runs.”
“It’s not running now.” He drew a blue rag from his back pocket. It was the kind of scrap mechanics used to wipe their hands and touch hot engines. “You might want to spray your engine off every once in a while.” He used the rag to check battery connections, hose connections and to prod the engine compartment as if he knew what he was doing.
“I barely clean my apartment. Why would I clean my engine?”
“So a mechanic can see if you’ve got leaks anywhere, for one thing,” Vince said straight-faced. “Why don’t you try it again?”
She hurried back behind the wheel. The truck started right up. “Traitor,” she accused under her breath.
Vince shut the hood and came around to her window, wiping his hands.
“Thanks.” Harley gave him her polite smile, the one she reserved for helpful salesclerks and the receptionist who squeezed her in at the doctor’s office. “I owe you.”
“Yeeeaah.” He wound out the word and ran his fingers through that thatch of midnight hair. “About that. I need a favor.” Those kind black eyes lifted to her face.
Don’t believe in fairy tales... Don’t believe in fairy tales...
Despite their history, despite knowing better, silly fantasies about princely rescues and Mr. Right fluttered about her chest like happy butterflies on a warm spring day.
She should go. Instead she lingered and asked, “So what’s the favor?”
The devilish grin returned, making the butterflies ecstatic. “I need a date to my brother’s wedding.”

Excerpt two:

“What’s wrong?” Matt rested his arms on the table and leaned in. She could feel the warmth of his breath, feel the heat of his concerned gaze.

“Nothing.” She shifted in her seat. “It’s...nothing.”

“Now who’s lying?”

Her chin shot up at his accusation but it was then she saw he was teasing her.

“Come on, Lori. Tell me what’s bothering you. You’ve been acting weird since before we came in here. Are you embarrassed to be seen with me?”

“Why on earth would I—” She took a deep breath. “You’re making fun of me.”

“How else am I going to disarm you enough to tell me what’s going on in here.” He reached up and tapped a finger against the side of her head.

“It’s not important.” Darn it, why did she always let this get to her? Why hadn’t she just been honest and told him she didn’t want to go to breakfast?

“Given we’ve spent the last couple of minutes debating that fact, I’ll say you’re wrong. What is it?”

“I just...” Could her face feel any hotter? “I don’t like eating out, okay? There. You got me to confess, copper. Take me to jail.” She held out her wrists, palms up.

“Why don’t you like to eat out?”

“Oh, for...” She tucked her hair behind her ears and sighed. “It’s silly.
Stupid even.”

“Clearly, it’s not. Tell me.”

Tell him? Tell him one of her most embarrassing secrets? Tell him about how even her own parents were disgusted by her? Yeah, that should kill off any residual feelings he might have for her. “When I was a little girl and we went out to eat, my mother would constantly criticize me. I shouldn’t have that or what will people think, a chubby girl like you eating that. I embarrassed her. And she made sure everyone knew it.” All these years later and it still messed with her head. “I told you it was stupid.”

“It’s not stupid. I’m sorry you had to deal with that.” He reached over and held out a hand. She stared at his open palm, heart pounding as she realized how much she wanted to take it. Instead, she pulled her hands into her lap and locked her fingers together. “No child should ever be made to feel less than. For any reason.”

“I totally agree. Which is why I haven’t talked to her in about a gazillion years.” That neither of her parents seemed interested in reaching out to her—or Fletcher—didn’t help the situation. It was one thing to be a child and suspect your parents didn’t like you; it was another to be an adult and know it to be true. “So, there you go. I don’t like to eat out because my mother used to make fun of me for being fat. Bring on the chocolate pudding.”

“Have I mentioned how much I loathe self-deprecating humor?” He sat back and pinned her with a stare that made her shiver. “We’re being honest with each other now, yeah? Stop making fun of yourself. I don’t find the jokes funny and I don’t agree with them. What on earth does your dress size have to do with the type of person you are? I like who you are, Lori. I have from the first time I saw you, so suck it up and deal with it. And while you’re at it, stop making light of things that cause you pain. It’s irritating.”

“Yes, it is.” She didn’t want to take what he said to heart. She didn’t want to believe he meant what she’d always wanted someone to say to her; someone who might actually care for her, love her. “It’s also the one defense mechanism that’s worked for me, so forgive me if I don’t bow to your lack of expertise in this matter.” She meant for the comment to tick him off, drive him away. Offend him to the point he’d settle her firmly in the friends column. Instead, she watched the anger lines around his eyes ease and the
corners of his mouth flicker.

“You’d be surprised what I know about parental disapproval, but that’s a conversation for another time. Look at us, getting to know each other. Being honest with one another. It’s almost like we’re starting a new relationship or something.”

Lori shook her head, wanting nothing more than to walk away and forget that whenever she was with him she didn’t want to be without him. He had a way of making her forget everything that shouldn’t be important. “What’s wrong with you? Everything that should make you angry makes you laugh.”

“And sometimes vice versa,” he confirmed with a shrug. “You have your coping mechanisms, I have mine. And for the record, I’ll give you time to work on that bad habit of yours. Not a lot, but some.”

Revision is a Process by Catherine E. McLean

Revision is a Process –
How to Take the Frustration Out of Self-Editing
by Catherine E. McLean
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Self-Help, Self-Improvement, Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A first draft holds the possibility of what will be a great story. Revision turns that rough diamond into a spectacular gem worth a reader's money and time.

Writers are individuals but to be a producing writer means creating a system to revise and polish a work so the reader thoroughly enjoys the story. REVISION IS A PROCESS is a guidebook for writers and authors that shows how a simple 12-step process can be tailored to eliminate the most common and chronic maladies of writing genre fiction. This valuable guidebook contains secrets, tips, practical advice, how-to's, and why-to's for taking the frustration out of self-editing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
From Section 9 - Said is not Dead
One of the most controversial aspects of writing dialogue is the use of said as a speech tag. Some think using said is pedestrian and boring, others pepper every line of dialogue with said for fear the reader won't know who is speaking. The fact is that said is nearly invisible to a reader. However, overuse is a common problem, so delete as many as possible without jeopardizing clarity or use beats. (Revisit the Oubliette example on the previous page. Said was not used. Beats were.)
In your review to minimize using said, watch for LY or ING ending speech tags like: "Drop dead," she said dramatically. That tells (and does so poorly). Instead show with a beat: "Drop dead." The anger in her voice was unmistakable. You should avoid such tags as "Of course," he said knowingly (which has an ING and an LY). You may catch the LY and ING tags in the passivity check, which is discussed in Section 11. However, don't mistake the ING words when they're necessary, such as "Oh, that dialogue speech tag has a participle added to it," Marsha said, squinting at the underlined word on the page.
Yes, that's right, squinting is part of a participle phrase, which can be useful in speech tags.
Guest post with Catherine E. McLean
Did you learn anything from writing this book? If so, what?
It sounded like an easy thing to do—write twelve blog essays, one each month on encouraging writers to end the frustration of self-editing by devising their own revision process. A process that would systematically catch flaws and errors to avoid endless rounds of trying to fix everything when noticed. After all, multi-tasking does not work because creativity must take a backseat to logic if the editing is to be effective. Add to that how many items need to be checked and the task usually has writers stuffing the manuscript in a box or drawer and starting something that's more fun— a new story.
Well, those twelve essays once a month were well-received and easy enough to do. Then I promised my readers I would put them all together into a guide, a book, that would also include all the lists and checkoffs and cheat sheets. Little did I know what I was undertaking in the way of setting up the book (formatting it) and expanding some sections with explanations, definitions, examples, and so on.
When I had the book set up and was almost ready to publish, I discovered I left out a section. Since I had already contracted and gotten the book cover done, I had to swap out information, condense some things, and get that prologue information into the book and keep to the same number of pages. Two months of almost daily work was involved because when you change one thing, it affects something else. Worse, there was no guide or manual on self-editing a book on self-editing! I was winging it. I wanted to scream with frustration.
But, as I tell writers and authors, take one thing at a time. Doing so gets the job done better and, in the end, you know you didn't miss anything.
So, I sent the manuscript out for editing and when it came back, there were a few changes that had to be made. Again, I could not change the number of pages so I had to finagle some things (mostly using smaller words for big ones to ax widows and orphans, which always nets more lines available for text).
Originally I had planned on doing an ebook version, but after getting the hard copy and looking at what would be sacrificed to strip it down to bare bones for an ebook, and knowing people would skim it and not use it as it was intended, well, I tabled the idea of it being an ebook.
Yet, in doing Revision is a Process, it helped me learn more about book layouts. It even helped me revamp the materials I used in my online writing courses. Will I do another yearly-blog-to-book? Ah . . . not for quite some time!
Excerpt, Chapter 1
"This is your car? It's beautiful." He motions for me to enter, and I'm thankful he doesn't comment on how close my comment was to a moan. Gorgeous and a gentleman. He's getting better and better. I run my hand down the body as I walk to the door. He tenses as I do so, making me wonder where his mind has gone.
Damien clears his throat. "Yes, this is my car. I am glad you approve. You should have none but the best conveyance." Again he motions for me to enter the car, and this time I do.
"Thank you. That's sweet of you to say." He closes the door with a nod before walking around the car and getting in.
"So, what kind of car is this?"
"It is a Veyron. A good vehicle."
"I'll say."
Damien chuckles as he turns the key. The radio blares to life playing glam rock, and he reaches forward to change the station.
I catch his hand to stop him. "Don't change it."
Damien glances at me, obviously surprised. "I would never have guessed that you like this kind of music."
Don't judge a book by its cover, gorgeous. "Damien, you just met me. There's a lot that you would never guess." I briefly wonder what music he thought I would like. Then again, I like such a variety that he's probably right anyway.
"I would like to get to know you better, then."
Perfect. I smile slightly, trying not to give away my excitement. "I'd like to get to know you better as well."
We settle into a comfortable silence, listening to music, and before I know it, we're at this cute little café. It seems like Damien is instantly at my side of the car and opening my door. My eyebrows hit my hairline when he offers me his hand as I step out.
"Oh, wow." I tear my eyes away from his hand and meet his gaze. "Thank you." His eyes fill with delight when my hand touches his.
"It is simply proper manners, Chérie."
"Is it? Then most guys don't bother with them."
He offers me another of those wicked grins as we walk to the café door. "Ah, but I am not most guys, E-ly-sa-beth." He draws out my name, making it sound far more elegant than I'm used to hearing.
I hope my answering smile is appropriately flirty. "I may have noticed."
Damien holds the door to the café open for me with a slight bow, but his eyes never leave my own. "After you." Despite my best attempts to never prejudge someone, it's difficult to reconcile his appearance and actions.
"Thank you." There's no line, so we walk straight up to the cashier. The pretty, blonde, buxom cashier who's eyeing Damien like a block of chocolate. She gives me a cursory glance, then focuses her gaze on him, as though I'm of no consequence.
"What can I get you today?" She’s obviously trying to make her voice low and sultry. I’m surprised she’s not batting her eyelashes.
Damien looks down at me, either clueless, or ignoring her. "Elysabeth, what would you like?"
"A medium hot chocolate, with whipped cream, please." I offer the cashier a victorious smile.
She writes my order on a cup. "Name?" She barks out, sounding completely different.
"Lys." She scrawls something illegible then smiles back up at Damien. "And what can I get you?" Her voice is back to sultry. The invitation is excruciatingly obvious.
"A medium dark roast coffee, for Damien."
"Okay, would you like anything else, Damien?" I roll my eyes at the way she licks her lips. Could she be any more obvious?
"That will be all." Is it wishful thinking, or does he sound a little annoyed? Her smile falls into a scowl. Silly girl. I almost hide my smile.
"Fine. That will be $6.12." I open my purse to pull out my wallet, but Damien puts his hand over mine to stop me.
"I offered to buy you a drink." Not really having anything to say against that, I nod. He hands the cashier a black AmEx. Wow. She runs it and hands it back to him with a scowl. Sore loser, apparently.
We walk away from the register to wait. "Thanks for my drink, Damien."
"It was my pleasure, Elysabeth. I hope you do not mind me asking, but do you prefer to be called Lys?"
I'm not entirely sure how to answer that one. "Usually yes. My friends have been calling me Lys since I was little. But it started because they couldn't say my name correctly. You do." I grin at him. "I really like how elegant you make my name sound."
He steps closer to me, and the café disappears. "Then I will continue to call you Elysabeth." His quiet voice zips through me like electricity. I find myself trapped by his gaze, only breaking loose when the barista calls out my order.
Dragon Blessed by Ophelia Bell blitz
Dragon Blessed
Ophelia Bell
(An Immortal Dragons Novel)
Publication date: March 6th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Dragon-blessed twins Neela and Naaz have waited nearly three thousand years for their chance to awaken their fated dragon mates. On the brink of a war with the enemy who enslaved them, their commander finally sends them to do just that.
But the twins’ mission isn’t called “Operation Wildcard” for no reason. These dragons are unique. Zorion and Asha are the children of the Immortal Blue named Belah; Zorion was sired by none other than The Void himself, and Asha is the product of Belah’s ancient union with the dragons’ former enemy who is now their most powerful champion in the war. These dragons’ powers are unknown, and Neela and Naaz will be the humans to reveal them and recruit them for their cause.
But their true enemy is ever watchful, and when Neela makes a risky decision to reveal her new lover’s powers, things go wrong. It will take nothing short of immortal dragon fire to set things right, and neither twin will emerge quite the same.
Author Bio:
Ophelia Bell loves a good bad-boy and especially strong women in her stories. Women who aren't apologetic about enjoying sex and bad boys who don't mind being with a woman who's in charge, at least on the surface, because pretty much anything goes in the bedroom.
Ophelia grew up on a rural farm in North Carolina and now lives in Los Angeles with her own tattooed bad-boy husband and four attention-whoring cats.
