VBT: Sophie Washington: The Snitch by Tonya Duncan Ellis

Sophie Washington: The Snitch
by Tonya Duncan Ellis

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Children's (Middle Grade)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

There’s nothing worse than being a tattletale…

That’s what 10-year-old Sophie Washington thinks until she runs into Lanie Mitchell, a new girl at
school. Lanie pushes Sophie and her friends around at their lockers, and even takes their lunch
money. If they tell, they are scared the other kids in their class will call them snitches, and won’t be
their friends. And when you’re in the fifth grade, nothing seems worse than that.

Excitement at home keeps Sophie’s mind off the trouble with Lanie. She takes a fishing trip to the Gulf
of Mexico with her parents and little brother, Cole, and discovers a mysterious creature in the attic
above her room. For a while, Sophie is able to keep her parents from knowing what is going on at
school. But Lanie’s bullying goes too far, and a classmate gets seriously hurt. Sophie needs to make
a decision. Should she stand up to the bully, or become a snitch?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
“Nice glasses,” smiles Mariama, one of my other good friends in our class. Mariama’s family moved to our neighborhood from Nigeria last year. Some people make fun of her because she dresses different sometimes and talks with an African accent, but she’s really nice.
“Thanks, this is my first time wearing them,” I say. “I was a little nervous this morning.”
“Well, you shouldn’t be because they look really good,” she assures me. A few of our other classmates come through the hall, and no one seems to pay too much attention to me wearing glasses. Seems like it’s not a big deal after all.
“Hey Soph,” calls Chloe, rushing over to join us at the lockers, “those are some cute specs. I may get some with red frames to match my uniform logo.”
“You’re supposed to wear glasses to see, Chloe,” Mariama and I laugh.
“Well, they can be used for fashion, too,” she informs us.
We compare notes on last night’s science homework and grumble about the many review packets Mr. Simpson assigns.
“He must really want us to become astronauts,” Chloe complains.
“Yeah, it took me over an hour to get mine done,” I say.
Suddenly, I hear Mariama whistle under her breath.
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
I see Lanie moving in our direction.
You mean she bothers Mariama, too? I think to myself.
“Hey, Miss Tarzan,” Lanie says, turning toward our friend. “I see you’re wearing that necklace from Africa that you promised me,” she says, pointing at the string of colorful wooden beads my friend is wearing.
Mariama, who is at least a foot shorter than Lanie and probably 15 pounds lighter, starts to shake.
“My mother gave me this necklace,” she says, “and it was a gift from her mother to her.”
“Well, it’s going to be my gift now,” Lanie snarls, reaching out to grab it.
“Why don’t you give it a rest?” says Chloe, moving to block her.
“And who’s going to make me?” Lanie smirks.
I feel my face getting hot under my new glasses. I am so tired of Lanie bothering everybody and spoiling all our fun. If I wasn’t so scared of people calling me a snitch, I would march right down to the principal’s office and tell on this bully.
“Leave her alone, Lanie,” I say through gritted teeth.
“And who’s going to stop me?” she asks.
“Me.”
Lanie laughs and shoves me against the locker.
“You couldn’t stop a flea.”
“Come on, Sophie, let’s just go,” Chloe urges.
But I’ve had enough.
I shove the bully back.
“I said, leave her alone.”
Lanie looks surprised for a second.
“Fine, if she won’t give me her necklace, then I’ll take yours.”
She yanks my precious silver friendship chain from my neck and knocks me to the floor so quickly that my new glasses fall off.
“Sophie!” Chloe and Mariama rush over to help me as the bully hurries off down the hall.
“I hate her!” I reach on the floor for my new glasses and see that the glass is cracked in one of the lenses.
“Oh no!”
What am I going to do now?
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Tonya Ellis remembers hiding in the restroom from a few bullies during her elementary school days.
She encourages kids to speak out if they are being mistreated. She knew she wanted to become a
writer after an article she wrote was published in her hometown newspaper. Since then, Tonya has
worked as a journalist, written for newspapers and magazines and won awards for her books. When
she’s not busy writing, she enjoys reading, biking with her husband and two sons and daughter, and
travelling to interesting places. SOPHIE WASHINGTON: The Snitch is the second book in a series
about Sophie and her friends.
Interview with Tonya Duncan Ellis
  1. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story? When I begin all my books I am the tour guide leading my characters on the path I’ve mapped out for them to follow. I write out chapter headings to use as a loose outline and begin to fill in the details. As the story continues on the journey, events in the plot or even my own life sometimes cause the story line to veer in other directions and the characters show the way. I had no idea that one of the characters would end up in the emergency room when I started writing Sophie Washington: The Snitch, for example, but with their actions the characters took control.
  2. Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
    1. It’s entertaining – The on-going bickering and antics between Sophie and her little brother Cole will make you laugh and make your heart sing.
    2. There’s excitement – The scenes between the kids and the bully add plenty of suspense and action.
    3. It’s current and thought provoking– bullying is a hot topic nowadays that many are interested in.
    4. It’s relatable – The school, home, and field trip scenes are common to most kids so they can relate the action and character choices to their own experience.
    5. The book is fun – Sophie Washington: The Snitch is a funny and heartwarming tale that kids will learn from without knowing it and won’t soon forget.
  3. Have you written any other books that are not published? I just finished the fifth book in my series, Sophie Washington: Hurricane, which is due to be released in March. In this book Sophie learns lessons about appreciation and gratefulness after she and her family are evacuated from their home during a natural disaster. I am super excited about this release and believe fans of the series will love it.
  4. Pen or typewriter or computer? Does anyone write with a typewriter anymore? My kids look at those as antiques! It’s definitely a computer for me. I type as quickly as I talk so I would be far less productive if I were doing my work with a pen, plus writing my hand makes my hands hurt. Typewriters don’t have a built-in thesaurus or spell check so there’s no way I’d want to go back to using them.
  5. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans? Thanks so much for checking into my blog tour! I hope to hear from you at other stops on the tour. Please feel free to shoot me a message on the contact page of my website at tonyaellisbooks.com to join my email list. I may be offering free advance review copies of my upcoming book Sophie Washington: Hurricane!
Frank
J. Edler
My
mother was an alien and my father was a lamp post. I was fed a steady
dose of soap bars as a child as punishment for my foul mouth and
incessant pranks. Little did anyone know the soap only made me
stronger, faster, more agile. My brain filled with bubbles that were
99.9% pure. It was an amazing time. I left the city and moved out to
the country where I heard tell there is an amazing banana bread
store. I never found it, but I did find love. I loved that tuna
sandwich like no other and we were married on the Fourth of July,
just like Tom Cruise in that one movie about said date. It was a
magical time but alas was not meant to be. I ate it. I tried to move
on, writing books and sharing them with the local townsfolk. They
would tell me to shut up and make sure I flushed before I left. Never
once did I wash my hands like the signs demanded. So here I am, dirty
handed and telling my tales. Wanna hear one?
Tom
Clark
is a writer, and a
veteran internet journalist and podcast producer. His work has been
seen in websites such as This is Infamous and Rue Morgue, among other
freelance outlets. He currently produces podcasts at Project
Entertainment Network, including his shows: the long running heavy
metal and horror themed the Necrocasticon, and the Curtain Jerkers, a
comedic take on pro wrestling podcasting. Tom’s debut novella,
“Good Boy” will be self published and available through all your
digital reading outlets in 2018. Tom and his wife live in the wilds
of upstate New York, cohabiting with a pair of Jack Russell Terriers
and their pet rabbit.
BRIAN
KEENE
is the author of over forty books, mostly in the horror, crime, and
dark fantasy genres. His 2003 novel, The Rising, is often credited
(along with Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic and Danny
Boyle’s 28 Days Later film) with inspiring pop culture’s current
interest in zombies. Keene’s novels have been translated into
German, Spanish, Polish, Italian, French, Taiwanese, and many more.
In addition to his own original work, Keene has written for media
properties such as Doctor Who, The X-Files, Hellboy, Masters of the
Universe, and Superman.
Several
of Keene’s novels have been developed for film, including Ghoul,
The Ties That Bind, and Fast Zombies Suck. Several more are
in-development or under option.
Keene’s
work has been praised in such diverse places as The New York Times,
The History Channel, The Howard Stern Show, CNN.com, Publisher’s
Weekly, Media Bistro, Fangoria Magazine, and Rue Morgue Magazine. He
has won numerous awards and honors, including a World Horror Grand
Master award, two Bram Stoker awards, and a recognition from Whiteman
A.F.B. (home of the B-2 Stealth Bomber) for his outreach to U.S.
troops serving both overseas and abroad. A prolific public speaker,
Keene has delivered talks at conventions, college campuses, theaters,
and inside Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, VA.
Erin
Sweet Al-Mehairi
has Bachelor of Arts degrees in English, Journalism, and History. She
has 20 years of experience in the communication fields and is
currently a writer, a journalist, a publicist, and an editor among
many other things.
She
is the mother of three school-aged children and a cat. She lives with
her family in rural Ohio nestled in the forest—a place just ripe
for nightmares. Her passions are reading, writing, book hunting,
hiking, and entertainment such as movies/film, television, and music.
Oh, and she bakes, because you can’t do any of that without
cookies.
Erin
is a co-host with her Marketing Morsels segment on Project
Entertainment Network’s The Mando Method, an award-winning weekly
podcast for new and veteran writers.
Breathe.
Breathe., published by Unnerving, is her debut collection and a mix
of dark poetry and short stories. She will also be featured in the
upcoming anthology from Unnerving called Hardened Hearts coming in at
the end of 2017. Many other works in various genres are in progress
as well.
its essence for fictional use. He writes during the day and wanders
aimlessly all night…alone.
And now, an interview with the star of the short story Mr. Giggles, part of the Project Entertainment Network’s My Favorite Story Podcast Anthology, the one and only Mr. Giggles.
Nameless Interviewer:  Tell us, how did you land the prestigious role of Mr. Giggles in the blockbuster short story, Mr. Giggles, Mr. Giggles?
Mr. Giggles:  Do you want to play with me?
NI: Well, yeah, sure. But first I’d like to get this interview with you. Mr. Giggles, what was it like working on set with actual vile, putrid demons from Hell?
MrG: I love to tell jokes. Do you want to hear a joke? It's a very funny joke!
NI: Okay, but then we really need to finish up this interview. I have a deadline you know.?
MrG: Knock, knock.
NI: Who’s there?
MrG: Bannana Pants
NI: Bannana Pants who?
MrG: Banna Pants with peanut butter and farts!
NI: Okay then. On with the interview. The rumor mill has been buzzing about an in-story romance that may have brewed when the pen wasn’t writing. Is it true that you and your demon co-star, Mooga, got rather friendly?
MrG: Ewww! Cooties!  Tag, you’re it!
NI: Honestly, I don’t want to play tag. I have a job to do. I’ve got five more press junkets before lunch. Can’t we just get on with this, Mr. Giggles? I’m sure one of the other journalists will be feeling more spry and will join you in a game of tag. The guy from Rolling Stone sure looks like he’d rather be playing tag than writing for that rag.
MrG: Hug time!
NI: Ugh, no! Mr. Giggles, please! Personal space! No, you can’t initiate that type of physical contact in our current social climate. Oooof, thats a little too tight. Ow, yeah, you’re actually starting to kinda hurt me. This has gone well beyond any legal thresholds in this state. Oh my God, you’re squeezing me so tight your flesh is melding into mine! Stop! Stop! Arrrrrghhhhh!
Nameless Interviewer: Teeheeheehee! Do YOU want to play with me?
Editor’s Note: This report was filed via live electronic transfer. The reporter, who shall remain nameless, has not reported back for duty since this assignment. The editors hold no responsibility for the shenanigans, or tomfoolery, or antics, capers, horseplay, funny business, high jinks, mischievousness or frolicsomeness any of our independently contracted journalists take part in. Our legal department advised the editorial department to state unequivocally that reading Mr. Giggles or any of the other stories in Project Entertainment Network’s MY FAVORITE STORY Anthology may lead to a sense of elation, wickedness, mirth, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, uncontrollable winning of the Pick 3 lottery, odd-looking skin-eating worm infestation, unreasonable sexiness and unexplainable ability to use a spatula as a weapon of the ninjitsu discipline.
