Author: Anita R. Gibbons

Genre: Fiction
Format: Ebook
Maggie Cameron is a thirty-something single mother who has already established a moderately successful publishing business in Vancouver, Canada. She is also struggling to cope with the strain of a failing marriage and the needs of her growing daughter. Then into her life enters Carla Green as her young personal assistant.
Carla quickly becomes an invaluable player in Maggie’s business and family life. Then everything moves smoothly for a number of years until the confluence of two major events brings their developing relationship to a climax.
Carla is forced to confront the reemergence of her childhood demons on two fronts when a previous illness brings her mortality into question again. Maggie undertakes to publish a lesbian-focused story by a well-respected novelist under an assumed name. Maggie is deeply worried about the latter, even after Carla offers to play a role in addressing her major concerns. However, it is of even greater concern to both Maggie and her daughter, Stephanie, now in her teens, that Carla’s shattering prognosis will have severe repercussions on their developing comfortable family relationship.
By way of devising a coping strategy, Maggie and Stephanie begin plotting a way to make Carla’s impending death as happy as possible for all concerned. However, Carla seems to be rejecting all their efforts until an opportunity emerges for Stephanie to spend part of her upcoming school holiday in France. After considerable persuasion, Carla finally agrees to accompany them on their planned grand tour of Europe. Hence, although the story is set primarily in Vancouver, Canada, it also incorporates their travels across Europe.
As they all set about arranging for and planning their holiday itinerary, Carla is also trying to address her long-held concerns about her own sexuality. She eventually discloses her fears to Maggie, whose initial reaction is less than positive, particularly as Carla also soon expresses her deep feelings for her boss.
This unexpected development causes Maggie to also attempt an analysis her own deepening feelings for Carla, but before she is able to draw any conclusions, an event immediately preceding their departure seemingly dooms whatever future their relationship might hold.
The saga then proceeds as a mini travelogue covering their adventures in France. Indeed, it is only when Maggie and Carla, having deposited Stephanie with her troublesome father, set off on their own adventure to Italy that they begin to address the changing nature of their relationship.
It is only when they reach the idyllic setting of the small coastal village of Positano that Maggie finally gives in to the perceived pressure from Carla and finally admits to herself that she has irrevocably fallen totally ‘in love’ with Carla. However, more problems emerge as they grapple with the issue of Maggie’s willingness to share her newfound knowledge with Stephanie and the outside world in general.
After she was born in the United Kingdom, AnitaÃs family moved to Australia when she was still quite young. She studied her BA (sociology/politics) and MA (womenÃs studies) at VictoriaÃs Monash University. She met her life partner at age twenty, and they spent thirty-seven years together in their small home in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. They both enjoyed traveling, sailing, and sharing their time with an array of pet cats. Her writing has consisted of short stories, poetry, and articles for professional journals. Following her partnerÃs death in 2007, this novel finally burst out of its shackles. Her other major pastimes include presenting a weekly program for Melbourne community radio and still traveling whenever possible.

Book Description:
Having lived a life of self-imposed isolation, William suddenly finds himself on a road trip to Mexico with a woman whose life becomes intertwined with his.
Forging an unlikely friendship, they must learn to navigate the dangers and chaos of their adventure while confronting ghosts from the past.
The Last Line of a Goat Song is poetic and poignant, with characters full of longing, pain, and a desire to be seen, if not for who they are, then who they want to be. This is a riveting story of an unlikely friendship. A remarkable novel.
—Edan Lepucki best selling author of California and Girl No. 17
Excerpt:
“I’m leaving Monster.” Maggie said. She lit a cigarette that William
didn’t know she possessed.
William put down his journal. He looked over at her with a raised
eyebrow,
“I’m done with him.”
She loved men like a tourist, William understood. She saw the best in
them, was fascinated by their history and etymology, took tours and learned the
topography, the geography. Then she left after three days, or a week, or maybe
three months. She took pictures, she bought postcards, but she always left.
“He has a problem with drugs. I deserve something more than that.”
About the Author:

Interview with Jonathan Doyle
T’s Stuff: Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Jon Doyle: Life. My imagination. Nature. The guy at the end of the street mowing his lawn while smoking a cigarette! They come from a hodgepodge of ideas and philosophies as I try to make sense of the world.
TS: How did you do research for your book?
JD: I was a childhood stutterer. So I needed no research on William. And I based Maggie on a particular friend of mine from Mexico and whom had to cross the border illegally. So I interviewed her and borrowed heavily from her life. I love her to this day.
TS: Do you have another profession besides writing?
JD: I write for television. So... no!
TS: If you could go back in time, where would you go?
JD: 1929 Paris. It was a time when there was a confluence of so many new ideas from all forms of art. Gertrude Stein holding salons in Paris with Dali and Picasso and Cummings and Joyce and Fitzgerald. I would have loved to have been the proverbial fly on the wall.
TS: What is your next project?
JD: I’m just starting out on the quintessential coming of age story about a young man and his dog.

Syl Skye. Rouen Rivoche. Star-crossed lovers who should be mortal enemies. This is the story of how they met.
A nightly excursion to DC. A goth-rock show. One innocent train ride. That’s all it takes for high school sophomore Syl Skye’s perfectly normal world to come crashing down.

Rouen Rivoche is one of those dark Fae. Bound to the Agravaine the dark Fae Huntsman who is dedicated to wiping out all sleeper-princesses, Rouen has no choice but to hunt Syl down and spill her blood.

After all, every couple has their issues, right?
Find out how Syl and Rouen met in this new prequel novella to MORIBUND, Book 1 of the Circuit Fae…

EXCERPT:
In this scene, Syl and her squad are at a club where Euphoria’s playing. Syl’s never seen Euphoria, and she’s excited, but Fiann’s acting weird, treating Syl poorly and trying to bully her into double-dating the Dickinson twins, Brody and Bryce. Syl ducks into the bathroom to catch her breath.* * * *
I take a deep breath and pat the nail where it rests secretly against my skin. Okay, Syl. It’s go-time. I shove the door open. Head held high, I step out into the flashing lights of the club, and bam! run right into someone.
“Steady on.” Strong hands keep me from falling on my butt, and during our awkward two-step, I catch a glimpse of raven-dark hair and sapphire-blue eyes ringed in gold. Her deep chuckle is like rolling thunder.
“I-I’m sorry.” I look up, brushing my red curls out of my face.
Whoa. My poor heart. She’s gorgeous. Her eyes are all intense and glowy as she searches my face. The ache in my chest gets worse—but also, somehow better.
What is happening? I reach out and touch her hand. Where I want to feel skin, I feel the leather of a glove.
Still, a jolt passes between us.
She lingers, her pretty face a bit dazed. She looks from our touching hands back up. “You…”
She feels it too. Whatever it is.
And dear heaven and all the angels, she’s… Wow. She’s something else. High cheekbones, full lips curved into a smile that’s part mischief, part mayhem. Her bronze skin holds an inner glow even in the dim light of the club, and those eyes… When she looks at me, the club, the flashing lights, all the people—everything falls away and there is only the two of us.
“Who are you?” she whispers, and I hear it because she’s leaned in close, so close I can feel her warm breath on my cheek.
“I…” Introduce yourself already! But I’m all tongue-tied, frozen like the world’s biggest dork. My fingers find the strip of skin between her glove and her sleeve. Ohhhh…so warm and silky, and… What the heck are you doing, Syl?
She chuckles again, more rumbly, rolling thunder. “Are you all right?”
Yes. No. Urgggg… I step back, my cheeks on fire. She smells like all the good things in autumn—crisp leaves and harvest moons and sultry bourbon vanilla. Whoa. I’m getting a little swoony. “I-I’m fine. Really. Are you?”
“Yes, but I’d like to…” She swallows hard, seeming almost shy beneath her super-cool exterior. She licks her bottom lip, and I nearly pass out right there. “Will you meet me after the show?”
Did mine ears deceive me? Girl works fast! Plus, I can tell she’s at least a year older than me. “I…” Say something, silly!
“I’m sorry.” She pulls her hand from mine and steps away.
The loss of her touch leaves me cold. Moments from losing her to the crowd, I pluck up my courage. “What’s your name?”
That smile curves her lips like a kept secret. “I’m Euphoria.”
Euphoria. Whaaaaaaaaatttt? Seriously, Syl, only you could carry on an entire freakin conversation with your goth idol and not even recognize her.
But no…there’s something else, some other reason I didn’t recognize her right off the bat. I just can’t put my finger on it. Plus, I’m still swoony.
“I have to go.” She leans in, whispers in my ear, “After?”
I feel like only my heart can answer that question, but before I can even blink, she’s gone. Like gone-gone. One moment she’s in front of me; the next she’s vanished. Poof!
Euphoria. And she wants to see me “after.”
Crazy. This is crazy.
I shade my eyes from the blue-and-red houselights and look to the stage. After about ten minutes, the house music fades away, and the stage goes dark.
A lone silhouette appears there, backlit. It’s her.
Heat races through my body, my hand tingling from her touch. My stomach does a lazy barrel-roll, and those butterflies everyone’s always told me about? Yeah, apparently mine are Olympic gymnasts, because my whole stomach feels like it’s going for the Gold.
Oooookay. Chill out. I touch the iron nail beneath my dress. Gotta thank Glamma for the lucky pendant.
I step out of the bathroom and beeline toward the stage. I feel feverish, mad as hatter and a March hare all rolled into one.
I only know this: I have to see her again.
I’ve always hated crowds, but without another thought, I push my way to the stage. Toward Euphoria, and toward the “after” that will bring me back to her.
