Deadline by Jennifer Blackstream

"The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend."

Deadline
(Blood Trails Series, Bk 1)
By Jennifer Blackstream

Blurb:

As a witch with a dark past, Shade Renard knows the Otherworld isn’t always successful at policing itself. Humans don’t believe in magic anymore, and their ignorance renders them easy prey. So when an FBI contact hires her to consult on a possible haunting in a missing persons case, Shade seizes the opportunity to see justice done.

Her case takes an unexpected turn when an undead crime lord shows up on her doorstep. A bold thief stole the vampire’s little black book of secrets—and he’ll pay a lot more than an FBI consulting fee to get it back. To collect, Shade will have to confront a rogue sorceress, a vengeful wizard, and a lethally seductive fey, with only her wits, her growing magic, and a sarcastic pixie familiar.

Success means bringing a killer to justice and taking the first step to redemption. Failure means a war between humans and the Otherworld.

No pressure.

Excerpt #2

My instincts flared as I pulled into my driveway. The sun had set and it was dark, but the automatic light on my garage didn’t come on. I frowned.
“Did you disconnect the automatic light?”
Peasblossom curled against my neck, her wet dress adding to a sudden chill in the air inside the car. “No.”
Unease rolled down my spine. I murmured a spell, drawing a few circles in the air. “Lumen.” Three glowing balls of reddish light bloomed to life and hovered before me. I kept one over my head and sent the other two forward, illuminating my path to the front door. I didn’t open the garage door and pull in, but got out while I was still in the driveway, already preparing another spell as I climbed out of the driver’s seat.
“Revelare.” My power flowed in a wash of silver toward the house, probing for any foreign magic.
Nothing.
“Stay here,” I told Peasblossom. “If I don’t call for you, go to Mother Hazel and tell her everything that happened today.”
“But I won’t have anything to tell her unless I stay to see what happens,” Peasblossom hissed. “I’m not leaving you.”
“This might be nothing.” I kept my voice as low as possible. “The bulb may have burned out. Don’t be silly.”
“I’m not silly and I’m not stupid. You think there’s something bad inside. And a witch never ignores her gut.”
A lump rose in my throat, and I fought to swallow around it. “Please stay out here. I can’t bear the idea of anything happening to you.”
Peasblossom gave my ear a ferocious hug. “I’ll stay out here, but only as backup. I will never leave you.”
I waited for her to fly up and off my shoulder before straightening my spine. This was my house. My village. Whatever was here, whatever had violated my home, would be sorry. Power rose in my throat, feeding the spell I’d readied.
“Shade, look out!”
I whirled around and spat behind me. The spell hurtled through the air, and I had a split second to see a dark figure separate itself from the maple tree beside my driveway. The spell landed in the grass, the viscous blue fluid of the entanglement spell pooling in the tree’s shadow.
“Such attacks will not be necessary.”
A man spoke from beside me, smooth and masculine, voice heavy with an accent I hadn’t heard in a long time.
A very, very long time.
I turned, knowing I’d never call up another spell fast enough. I raised my hand anyway, needing to try, to go down fighting. A hand closed around my wrist, tight enough that I swore I heard my bones creak. I gritted my teeth and stared into the face of my visitor.
He was dressed in a suit that probably cost more than my car. Long white-blond hair brushed his shoulders and framed a pale face with sharp, graceful features. I couldn’t see what color his eyes were in this light, but it didn’t matter. I remembered his face.
He went by the name Anton Winters, majority shareholder of the Winters Group, a company that made the Forbes 500 list look like a gathering of struggling start-ups. There were whispers he had criminal connections, that he was former KGB. I knew the truth. And it was scarier.
Anton Winters had once been known by a different name.
Prince Kirill of Dacia.

A vampire.

About The Author

USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Blackstream is…odd. Putting aside the fact that she writes her own author bio in third person, she also sleeps with a stuffed My Little Pony that her grandmother bought her as a joke for her 23rd birthday, and she enjoys listening to Fraggle Rock soundtracks whether or not her children are in the car.

Jennifer doesn’t have spare time, but she makes it a point to spend at least one night a week with her sibling binge-watching whatever show they’re currently plowing through (currently Numbers on Netflix), and she ferociously guards quality time with her son and daughter. She cooks when she has the sanity for it—adding garlic to the recipe whether it calls for it or not—and tries very hard not to let her arachnophobia keep her out of her basement on laundry day.

Jennifer’s influences include Terry Pratchett (for wit), Laurell K. Hamilton (for sexual tension), Jim Butcher (for roguish flair), and Kim Harrison (for mythos). She is currently writing the series of her heart and her dreams, the series that has been percolating in her brain for the last decade…Blood Trails. An Urban Fantasy Mystery series that will combine the classic whodunit spirit with a contemporary fantasy setting. Expect mystery, magic, and mayhem, with characters that will make you laugh, cry, and probably stare at the screen with your jaw hanging down to the floor. Well, that’s how they affect Jennifer anyway…

Bright Star, Night Star: An Astronomy Story by Karl Beckstrand

This book is great on a couple of levels. First of all it is written in rhyme. Small kid love rhyming books, at least mine do.  The book is written about stars which is something that can be seen by everyone, so it makes it real for the kids, my kids tend to like stories that have an actual real subject to them. This book would make a great bedtime story for the kids, the stars come out at night, Right?

The book features a few tips, like how to find the North Star. The books does not actually feature certain stars and give a scientific history so to speak of it but instead it is more like a bunch of describing words about stars in general. Some of the words are quite large and would not be good for smaller children to try and read themselves, but as a parent I have no problem reading the book to them. It is a very short book but actually filled with a lot of stuff all related to stars.

The illustrations in this book are top notch. They are very colorful and quite busy.  The kids loved looking at the pictures, and actually have my tablet right now looking at the book again.

A Stranger in the Cove Templeton Cove Stories #8 by Rachel Brimble

Series: Templeton Cove
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: Jan 1st 2018
Publisher: Harlequin
Mac Orman is on a mission. When he discovers his recently deceased father had been
searching for his birth mother, Mac aims to finish the job by finding the grandmother he
never knew. His quest leads him to Templeton Cove—and a firecracker of a woman who
instantly jump-starts his tortured heart.
For Mac, Kate Harrington is the most tempting kind of distraction. But their sizzling
connection comes with a side of suspicion for Kate, who doesn’t trust this brooding
stranger in her town. Mac arrived with no plans to stay, but as he falls for Kate, he
wonders how he could ever possibly leave.
EXCERPT
Oh, for the love of God. The man’s smile was slow, soft and as sexy as hell. It was like an invisible
aphrodisiac on her newly ignited libido. She took another sip of her drink, her heart  racing and her
body on fire. He looked at her as though he had X-ray vision…or the ability to make her want to strip
without the request even passing his lips. Every inch of her body was intensely aware of him and she
didn’t like it. Not one tiny bit. Good looks and even better bodies were not to be trusted. This guy
could be just as much of a cheater as her ex. Even more so, if his killer smile was anything to go by.
She couldn’t imagine a woman not being affected by it. So why did she want to keep looking at him?
He leaned his elbow on the bar and faced her. “So…” He took a sip of his drink. “Do you
live around here?”
Feigning nonchalance, she sat straighter on her stool and drew forth as much of a welcome attitude as
she could. It wasn’t this stranger’s fault he’d attracted and intrigued her in one very dangerous blow.
“Yes.”
He smiled. “That’s all I get?”
“That’s all you get.” She returned his smile, her body relaxing a little. His voice was rich
and deep and had the same warming effect on her as a shot of whiskey on a cold night. “That is, until I
know a little more about you.”
“Shoot.” He drank. “Ask me anything you want.”
“Okay…” Her gaze dropped frustratingly to his mouth, most likely quashing her
nonchalance in a heartbeat. She shifted on her seat and lifted her gaze to his…although his eyes were
by no means a safer option. She cleared her throat. “What brings you to the Cove?”
His gaze locked on hers and the seconds ticked by. His blue eyes darkened as his smile
faltered.  Kate raised her eyebrows, curiosity whispering through her. “Was that not a good
question to start with?”
He flitted his focus to the band once more. “I’m looking for work.”
She frowned. “In Templeton?”
“It’s as good a place as any, isn’t it?”
She hazarded a guess that the shift in his tone was meant to induce a throw away question, to make her
believe it was no big deal why he was in Templeton. Little did Mr. Bad Boy know, she was
blessed—or sometimes cursed—with the innate ability to read between the lines, to sense when
something wasn’t quite right with people or situations. Her senses pinged to high alert with this guy
at the sudden stiffness in his body, the way his jaw had set. His easy demeanour of a moment before
had been replaced with clear defensiveness.

EXCERPT:

“What the fuck are you wearing?” Jordan says, eyeing my leathers.

“What every goddamned biker wears,” I snap. He’s wearing a goddamned suit that looks like it costs as much as that car I left back at Rachel’s sister’s house.

“You rode your bike down here?”

“Long. Story.” I close my eyes to signal that I’m not in the mood to tell said story, and he takes the hint. Because he knows me just as well as I know him. “Why the hell am I here?”

He stares at me. Looks me up and down. A whole scenario flashes in my mind in the time it takes him to reach down to pick something up off his desk, where he says, I found her. Or, She found me. Or, You wanna go to dinner with us? Because we’ve got reservations at the Grant. And he means her and him, as in the whole thing about us that made us an us in the first place.

But of course, he doesn’t say anything like that. He says, “Here’s the job,” waving a large yellow envelope, handing it to me. “Everything’s in there. Just…” He sighs and pinches the space between his eyes—stupid fucking Jordan gesture—like I’m the one on his last nerve, and not the other way around. “Just do it, OK? And be super fucking discreet. This is all anonymous. You do not show your face. You do not make any sort of contact. It’s strictly surveillance. Got it?”

I rip the envelope open and take a peek. Two keys, two bound stacks of hundred-dollar bills, which should be twenty thousand dollars, and some paperwork. “Is it legal?” I ask, taking out the stack of papers.

It’s a dossier—female. Mid-twenties. Dark hair and gray eyes—for one Evangeline Rolaine.

“Of course it’s legal. Why does everybody always ask me that? I’m a goddamned lawyer, everything I do is legal.”

“Yeah.” I laugh, reading the woman’s short bio on the top page. “You’re a goddamned lawyer, all right. Why does this name sound familiar?”

Jordan eyes me, waiting to see if I’ll take that first comment any further, and decides I won’t—and he’s right. Because after the morning I’ve had, I can’t think of a single reason I need to rehash the past too. “She was famous once upon a time.”

“Child prodigy,” I say slowly, reading her bio at the same time. “Yeah, I remember this chick. She was all over the TV when she was a kid.”

“Right. And then she wasn’t. It’s your job to watch her. That’s it. Just watch her. You got it?”

“Watch her do what?” I ask, flipping through the pictures.

“Just… everything. Nothing specific.”

Why am I watching her? Someone after her or something?”

“You don’t need to know why. You just need to take that money, buy the fucking equipment, go to that address, put up the fucking cameras, and then when she gets there, you watch her.”

“So I’m spying on her and she doesn’t know it?” My laugh is loud. Because… “That’s some creepy shit, dude.”

Jordan sucks in a breath of air. It’s cautious, that inhale. It’s long too. And it’s filled with all the things that we left unsaid between us after college. “She knows,” Jordan finally says. Carefully. Like he’s picking his way through a minefield. “Just… just fucking do what I tell you. You’ve got a week to get set up and then a few weeks of surveillance, tops. Then I’ll pay you.”

“I don’t need the money, asshole. You know that’s not why I’m here.”

I hear the unasked question. He hears it too. Then why are you here?

But he knows why.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon by Julia Kent blitz

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon
Julia Kent
Publication date: January 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance

He is addicted to his phone and his new role as CEO. I’m addicted to getting some on my own honeymoon.

One of these things is not like the other.

I am pretty sure a serial killer’s lair is the only place in the world where I could stash my new husband so he can’t manage the acquisition of our new company.

And that seems a little drastic.

But only a little…

All I want is one week alone with him. Hours in bed, legs tangled together in ecstasy, room service and long walks on the beach in Hawaii.

Not vying for his kisses around a Bluetooth microphone. The Borg aren’t sexy in real life.

So I’m taking matters into my own hands and hitting “reboot” on our honeymoon.

We’re going to a place so remote that no one can find us.

Not even my mother.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon is now a full-length book of 150+ pages, with both Shannon and Declan’s points of view. Originally published with only Shannon’s viewpoint, this expanded edition is a result of reader feedback. People wanted to know what Declan was up to – so here you go. This book is meant to be read after Shopping for a Billionaire’s Wife and/or Shopping for a CEO’s Fiancée, but if you read it out of order (or even as a standalone), that’s fine. Shannon and Declan forgive you.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks / Google Play

There is also an audiobook on Whispersync with Zach Webber and Tanya Eby as the voices of Shannon and Declan!

Only 99¢ for a limited time!

EXCERPT:

Shannon

Let’s do an inventory of this fine day. My day-after-I-got-married day. In Vegas.

After fleeing my Momzilla mother.

Today is supposed be Day One of my honeymoon after marrying the billionaire of my dreams.

(Let’s not count the night before).

Woke up to the lovely sight of my husband’s tousled dark hair sliding down my torso so he could feast on me for breakfast.

Had actual breakfast in bed after room service delivered mixed berries, cream, bacon, and maple-soaked carrot-cake french toast, and the best damn coffee on the planet from the coffee chain I now own.

Made love with my delightful husband in the giant jetted bathtub in our suite. Turns out I’m as bendy as a Cirque du Soleil performer when I need to be. Maybe Mom’s insistence that I attend all those yoga classes she teaches has a silver lining after all.

Dressed and prepared to hop the corporate jet for Hawaii, kisses interspersed between readying ourselves for the trip. Undressed twice. Dressed twice. Declan insisted I not wear panties for the plane trip.

“But I’m already a member of the Mile High Club,” I’d protested.

“Not as a wife.”

He had a point.

Panties abandoned.

Found his brother, my best friend, a former colleague and an Anterdec chauffeur all married to each other.

Notice something a little different about that last one?

Yeah. Me too.

Day One of my honeymoon had promise, but now? Now it’s a little too real.

We’re on the plane, settling into our seats, and I’m doing my best not to think about my poor best friend and her chaotic mess back at the Anterdec resort where Declan and I just spent nearly a week trying to figure out our entire life.

Which we did, successfully, to my utter surprise. After fleeing our wedding in a helicopter and lying to my Momzilla mother, we managed to get to Las Vegas, ensconced in a resort on the Vegas Strip that Declan had designed himself as an intern in college. By the time my crazy family caught up to us, we’d steeled ourselves for the inevitable fallout.

And got so much more than we expected, in more ways than one. We’re married now. Husband and wife.

That’s really all that matters.

That, and honeymoon sex.

Lots and lots and lots of honeymoon sex. It’s my wifely right to walk funny for the next few days.

And his husbandly duty to make it so.
