AC/DC Album by Album by Martin Popoff

I don't know about you but I grew up listening to AC/DC. I know most of the words to most of their songs still to this day. Did I know the history of the band and of the songs? No but I do now.

This book is filled with fascinating stories of how the band got together, how they produced their albums and where their heads were at the time. You get an honest look at each of the band members. Martin Popoff introduces you to all things AC/DC not just with second hand stories but through interviewing each and every person in the band and people along the way that had an impact on the band.

There is also a ton of awesome pictures throughout the book. Not just pictures of the band. There are photos of album covers, PR photos and more.

Do you now that Angus Young, Malcolm Young and Bon Scott wrote most of the songs for the band? Do you know why Angus wears the school boy outfit? Do you know how the band got it's start? You will after reading this book.

With Bon Scott passing away in 1980 and now Malcolm Young passing away recently it is only right that someone has written a true account of the journey for the band and Martin Popoff has done it.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

VBT: In the Heat of the Tropics by Christina Elliott

In the Heat of the Tropics
by Christina Elliott

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Amid a sweltering Miami summer, a serial killer is haunting the city. Reporter Ingrid Sorenson is assigned the story and her primary source is brusque detective Rick Gonzalez. The pair clash, but sparks of passion ignite. They risk their jobs to give in to their desire, but mistrust of each other’s career motives wedges them apart. Then Ingrid gets a tip that leads her into the killer’s lair. She and Rick must choose between saving themselves or rescuing their love.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
The sky darkened again as if a dimmer switch had been thrown. Rick flicked on the headlights. “I don’t think we’re going to beat the rain,” he said. “Do you want to turn back?”
Worry crossed her face. “No way. I’ve got a deadline to meet,” she said. “I’m not afraid of getting wet.”
He gave her an assessing glance as they pulled up to a stop light. She was plucky, he had to give her that. And smart. The light changed and he turned his attention to the road. He had to keep his guard up. She was a reporter, first and foremost. He had to remember that.
“Have you found witnesses who might’ve seen a suspect?” she asked.
“I can’t discuss specifics of the investigation. The killer chose his times and locations very carefully, which suggests a lot of pre-meditation. These weren’t spontaneous homicides. He went to different areas known for prostitution pickups each time because johns would be scared to go to the place where one had just been murdered and the hookers would be on the alert, but they were all in this general North Miami area. He staked out lonely streets to direct the customer to drive to commit the sexual act and likely had his vehicle parked nearby to make a fast escape.”
Ingrid was avidly taking notes. He paused to wait for her to catch up, and wondered if he was saying too much. As long as he focused on details about the killer that someone would recognize, he couldn’t get in trouble.
By the time he pulled up to the scene of the third killing a mile away, fat plops of rain were sporadically splattering the windshield. They soon increased to a steady drumbeat battering the roof.
“Crap,” Ingrid said.
“There’s not much to see, honestly, just another side street.”
“I still think I should see the actual spot,” Ingrid said.
He would have to end up with a super-thorough reporter. “I have an umbrella here somewhere,” he muttered, foraging under the seat.
Holding the umbrella, he jogged to the passenger side and opened the door. Necessarily brushing shoulders to fit side-by-side under the small shelter, they walked down the street to an alcove of an abandoned building.
“Victim three was found parked outside this doorway, Saul Martinez,” Rick said.
The sky cracked as if it were splitting apart, unleashing a torrent of water.
“I love these midsummer thunderstorms in Miami, don’t you?” Ingrid said.
Lightning illuminated her face with a bright halo.  Her cheeks shone where the rain had caught them, her forehead framed with tendrils of damp hair. Drops glistened on her eyelashes like tiny tears. He felt himself gliding toward her.
She blinked and the raindrops fell from her lashes. He halted himself.
“You’re getting wet. Let’s head to victim four,” he said brusquely. He turned toward the car without waiting for an answer.
The crime scene was a side street ten blocks west. This time they didn’t get out of the car. Rick pulled up and reconstructed the scene, restraining his urge to lean over her, just to breathe in her slightly sweet powdery scent, as he pointed from the window.
By the time they pulled back into the station parking lot, the rain had tapered to a dancing sprinkle and fingers of sunlight poked through the clouds, sending an eerie, hazy wash over the atmosphere.
He parked. Ingrid handed him her business card. “If you think of anything else, call me. My cell’s on there, too.”
Rick tucked it in a pocket. “So, what are you going to write?”
“What you told me, plus I’ll call some serial-killer psychology experts.”
“Just don’t get me in trouble again.”
Ingrid gave him a hard look. He’d meant it as a joke, but it hadn’t come out lightheartedly. She’d taken it as a rebuke. Damn.
“Thanks very much for your time, Detective.” Her tone was frosty. “If I have any other questions, I’ll call Major Montoya.”
The slam of the door buffeted the vehicle.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Christina Elliott is a former Miami newspaper reporter and editor. She now writes spicy romantic suspense novels from Los Angeles, where she’s glad to report there are far fewer bad-hair days but sadly far less Cuban coffee. She is a member of the Romance Writers of America.
Interview with Christina Elliott
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I was a newspaper reporter for many years so that’s definitely influenced my fiction writing. That’s why Ingrid in In the Heat of the Tropics is a reporter! Among many other topics, I covered crime, cops, courts so I know that arena. Although I still have to do research to get grounded in the details, but my background certainly gave me a good headstart. Other than that, I’m always interested in the quirks of human nature, which sometimes prove to be the seed of a character or a plot. I have a notebook where I jot down things that spark my attention. Some things I use, some I don’t.
How did you do research for your book?
Research is one of the fun parts of writing novels. Since I worked as a print journalist, I had Ingrid’s character covered. I had to do more research on both serial killers and police procedures. Luckily, I’m fascinated by forensic psychology so over the years I’ve gathered a lot of general knowledge about people who are compelled to kill. I was able to draw on that to mold the character of Tucker. As for police, I covered plenty of crime stories over the course of my career. I’ve also dated two cops (!) and took a citizens police course that was offered by my local police department. For the setting of Miami, I lived there for five years so I knew the area quite well. But with everything, I still had to look up details, double-check and verify. With Google, it’s quite easy these days.
Do you have another profession besides writing?
I was a newspaper reporter for many years so you could say my profession has always been writing. Being a writer was all I ever wanted to be since I was a child and a voracious bookworm. Besides writing fiction, these days I write for a public relations agency, writing corporate speeches, press releases, op-eds, and I edit dissertations and book manuscripts. Writing is really my bailwick.
If you could go back in time, where would you go?
Many periods in history fascinate me but since I particularly love British history I’d go back to Elizabethan England. Called the Golden Age of England, it dates from 1558 to 1603. It was the time of Shakespeare, of new colonies being formed in the New World, of explorers and adventurers such as Sir Francis Drake roaming the seas, pirates pillaging the Caribbean, fights and competition with Spain for territory. It seems to have been an exciting era.
What is your next project?
Another romantic suspense, titled “Angel’s Lust.” It’s set in Los Angeles, where I now live, and it’s another sexy setting. It’s the home of Hollywood, of course, but it’s also the epicenter of the adult entertainment industry. I found this pretty interesting so the latter forms the backdrop for “Angel’s Lust.” The love story is between two homicide detectives competing to solve the suspicious death of an executive that is linked to the adult entertainment industry. The case deepens into sex trafficking and an unsolved murder.
Excerpt
Chapter 1
MONDAY, APRIL 8
“ … with mostly sunny skies and an expected high of about 87 today. More news from KWLF News Radio right after this.”
It's still dark outside KWLF-FM, a small radio station in Chandler, Arizona, and I’m the only one at work at the ridiculous hour of 4:45 a.m. Most 20-somethings I know would’ve been out partying last night and would be sleeping in or at least going to work at the normal time of 8 or 9. I’m sitting here in this tiny anchor booth, all by myself, these headsets smashing my long hair, talking into a mic, probably to no one. I mean, who is up listening to the radio except for insomniacs and maybe the few surviving farmers in this mostly urban area?
Time for a commercial. I touch a button and music starts, followed by a male announcer's voice hawking cars for a used auto lot.
I gingerly push an antiquated square audio cart into the machine. One of these days we’ll get real digital equipment. Of course, I think that every time I handle a piece of this older KWLF equipment, afraid it will crumble in my hand and we’ll go off the air and…
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Grant Pope, our news director, enter from the back of the station. He takes off his hat and sticks it on a coatrack near the door. I wave, he waves back, but he looks tired as he heads to his desk. He’s a short, thin man, with graying hair and a lot of lines on his face. These days his step isn’t as springy as it used to be, and is he actually having trouble sitting down onto his chair?
He’s been an institution here for more than 20 years, and one who has a “nose for news.” I hear he came up through the ranks in the early days of radio as a reporter, anchor and then news director. He still writes frequent news stories, but several of my co-workers and I wonder when he’s going to retire. He looks up, but I pretend I wasn’t staring at him.
Another 30 seconds. I thumb through the news stories, change the order. The music and announcer's voice ends, and I turn my attention back to the microphone.
“This is KWLF news. I'm Lisa Powers, filling in for Pat Henderson. In this exclusive KWLF story, an East Valley woman says her father is missing, and she suspects foul play,” I read from my script. “Joan Rogers-Hartley says her dad, 67-year-old Mark Rogers, took off early Sunday morning to drive to Northern Arizona for a bird watching trip—but never arrived. According to her, she thinks something is very wrong.”
I tap a red button on the cart machine marked ROGERS-HARTLEY SOT, which starts Joan’s voice.
“He was supposed to meet some friends of his in Clarkdale, where they were going to look for northern cardinals and red-winged hawks for a couple of days,” Hartley says, sniffling. “But they said he never made it.”
I continue. “Rogers-Hartley says Chandler police are quote 'dragging their feet,' unquote. KWLF Radio will follow this story and bring updates throughout the day. Anyone with any knowledge of the whereabouts of Mark Rogers is asked to call police.
“In other local news, the Chandler City Council meets in study session tonight to discuss rezoning of a large parcel of land initially slated for commercial development to be changed to residential. Grant Pope has details.”
I hit a button and Grant’s voice is heard. I lean back and listen.
Grant opens the door to the booth and pokes his head in.
“Was that missing man story on the wire?”
Uh-oh, I knew he’d ask that.
“Nope, the daughter called last night while I was here working on another story.” I could tell by Grant's frown he wasn't pleased. “I know, I know, we don’t usually do missing person stories until the police are called in, but that woman was really spooked. She seriously thinks he's in trouble. And we did get the exclusive...”
“All right, stay on it.”
Yes! “Of course, I'll follow up as soon as Pat gets here. He is going to be in today, right?”
“As far as I—”
I hold up a finger to indicate silence, as the tagline “Grant Pope for KWLF Radio” is heard. As Grant slips out the door, I turn back to the mic and continue to read more news.
EXCERPT:
“What are your plans for the week?” Mateu asked me.
“Nothing much. Business has been slow, so I’m thinking of giving a class.” Usually I supplemented my income by giving classes in various forms of magic. I taught runes, potion making, and other activities. Sometimes it was struggle to keep things afloat and earn enough to pay for rent, but my store served a purpose in the community and I enjoyed the work. I also liked being in charge of my own work hours. Like many of the other specialty stores in El Born, I opened and closed my store whenever I wanted. And my customers were okay with it. Most of them had my phone number and I left a note on the door for those who didn’t. If I was nearby, I could return to the store and help them with what they needed.
“Do you want me to tell the other gargoyles to talk up your services? Give you a small marketing push?”
I shook my head. “No, that’s okay, I kind of need this week to prepare. I have a speaker visiting the store next week. It’s going to require a lot of coordination and work. I’ve told the local covens but I’m going to have to send out reminders.”
“Whatever you like. If you change your mind, let me know.” Mateu returned to people-watching.
To drum up work and business, I had put together a little event for witches and wizards. I had invited many of the nearby covens to sign up. I had ordered a lot of inventory and had to send out a newsletter letting them know what was in the store. I hoped that would help increase sales.
“In fact…” My voice trailed off. Mateu’s shoulders had stiffened and his body was on alert as he stared out the window. I tensed. “What’s wrong?”
“Come over here,” Mateu said, still focused on whatever he saw outside the window. I walked around the counter and made my way to him. He got to his feet and stared intently at the street. As soon as I was within arm’s length of him, he asked me, “Do you see that woman?”
“Which one?” I searched among the people outside the store. Locals walked past us going about their daily lives while tourists gawked at everything they saw. Across the street was a larger group of tourists. They were focused on the tour guide who held a cane and pointed at various landmarks around them.
“The one in the red T-shirt. She’s part of the group.”
I resumed my search and spotted the woman he was talking about. She stood across the street, her body turned away from us. She gestured at the same buildings the tour guide did and talked to her companion who appeared to be bored from the restless way her head darted around looking at anything but the building in question.
“Yes? What about her?” Before the words had left my mouth, the woman turned slightly towards us and I immediately saw the problem.
A mark over her eye pulsed with a faint blue glow.
“Do you think she knows someone’s cast a spell on her?” Mateu asked me.
EXCERPT:
Swallowing the bile rising in the back of my throat, I close my human eye again and zoom in through the scope. I move the rifle until the crosshairs rest over Drummond’s forehead.
“I’m taking the shot.”
“Wait,” Dax says. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”
Disbelief drops my jaw, but I don’t take my eyes off the president. “What? Why the hell not?”
“Listen to me, B,” he says, his voice sounding closer. I feel him crouching beside me. “If we kill him now, they’ll just say we did it to silence him. Don’t you understand? If we kill him now, he’ll look like a martyr.”
My palms break out in a sweat, and Drummond’s voice fades to an unintelligible warble as my blood begins to rush so fast I can hear it roaring in my ears. Dax is right … but Drummond is in my sights. The man who destroyed our lives and killed my family. The man who murdered Yasmine and threatened to come for the rest of us.
“I have to,” I whisper, curling my finger around the trigger once more, shaking my head to clear it. “We came all this way.”
“Undetected,” Dax argues. “We can leave the same way. It’s not too late.”
“Yes, it is,” I argue. “It’s too late to go back! I won’t get another shot like this.”
“We’ll find another way,” he insists, his hand now on my shoulder. “A way that doesn’t make us look like the terrorists he’s making us out to be.”
I jerk away from his hold and refocus through the scope. “You can only treat someone like shit for so long before they snap. You can’t keep backing people into a corner without expecting them to eventually come out swinging. Drummond wants me to be a terrorist? Fine … I’ll earn my fucking spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. I’m taking the goddamn shot.”
Dax whispers a string of curses under his breath, but he doesn’t physically try to stop me. He doesn’t touch me again. I think it’s because, deep down, he wants to see this fucker pay for what he did to Yasmine. He wants to see Drummond fall, even though he knows the consequences we’ll face for it.
I zoom in a little closer … so close it feels like I’m staring directly into his cold, dead eyes. Spittle gathers in the corners of his mouth as he gets really riled up, waving his hands and pointing as he raises his voice to rally the crowd to his side. All around the world, people are buying into this … believing every poisonous word that comes from his mouth.
It’s time to silence him once and for all.
Taking another deep breath, I hold it as I prepare for my moment of truth. I see my father falling to the ground with a bullet in his skull … my mother sobbing hysterically as Skyye’s insides paint our front lawn red. And the hot rage in my veins goes cold like ice, freezing there as the entire world around me goes still.
As I exhale, my finger squeezes the trigger.
