Updrift
The
Mer Chronicles Book 1
by
Errin M. Stevens

Genre:
Paranormal Romantic Suspense

Since
her father died, Kate Sweeting’s home life has been in the pits,
her well-being on life support. Her future looks desolate until she
and her mother, Cara, make another plan: abandon their shriveled
existence for more promising prospects on the coast, where Cara can
play small-town librarian-bachelorette and Kate can figure out what’s
up with that secretive Blake family from the beach.
Everyone
is eerily captivated with Kate and her mother, and Cara is the first
to figure out why when the man of her dreams arrives all dripping and
devoted and closed-mouthed about what he intends. Kate is willing to
go along with their subterfuge for a while, but eventually makes a
charge for the water to learn what her mother is hiding. Gabe Blake
is there waiting for her…and so is someone considerably less
friendly. By the time Kate navigates her way home, everything will
have changed for her—what she feels, what she wants, and what
she’ll risk to be with the man she loves.

Breakwater
The
Mer Chronicles Book 2

The
sirens of Griffins Bay are in trouble, and the recent slew of royal
suicides looks to be the least of their worries.

For
one, unless a blood relative of the queen shows up, no one's around
to staff the monarchy. Well, except for a whack-job bureaucrat and he
seriously won't do. Worse is the community unrest threatening siren
society, a problem caused by too many humans in the pool, which means
Simon and his off-limit girlfriend will have to run and hide if they
want to make more of their flirtation...

The
solution doesn't inspire confidence at first, but the Blakes have
everything at hand to set their world to rights - namely, a hidden
queen, a dead prince, and a facility for human manipulation. Once
they find their sea legs, they'll restore order, distribute smart
phones, and drive that conniving bureaucrat to a grisly, satisfying
end.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

MONDAY, APRIL 8

“ … with mostly sunny skies and an expected high of about 87 today. More news from KWLF News Radio right after this.”

It's still dark outside KWLF-FM, a small radio station in Chandler, Arizona, and I’m the only one at work at the ridiculous hour of 4:45 a.m. Most 20-somethings I know would’ve been out partying last night and would be sleeping in or at least going to work at the normal time of 8 or 9. I’m sitting here in this tiny anchor booth, all by myself, these headsets smashing my long hair, talking into a mic, probably to no one. I mean, who is up listening to the radio except for insomniacs and maybe the few surviving farmers in this mostly urban area?

Time for a commercial. I touch a button and music starts, followed by a male announcer's voice hawking cars for a used auto lot.

I gingerly push an antiquated square audio cart into the machine. One of these days we’ll get real digital equipment. Of course, I think that every time I handle a piece of this older KWLF equipment, afraid it will crumble in my hand and we’ll go off the air and…

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Grant Pope, our news director, enter from the back of the station. He takes off his hat and sticks it on a coatrack near the door. I wave, he waves back, but he looks tired as he heads to his desk. He’s a short, thin man, with graying hair and a lot of lines on his face. These days his step isn’t as springy as it used to be, and is he actually having trouble sitting down onto his chair?

He’s been an institution here for more than 20 years, and one who has a “nose for news.” I hear he came up through the ranks in the early days of radio as a reporter, anchor and then news director. He still writes frequent news stories, but several of my co-workers and I wonder when he’s going to retire. He looks up, but I pretend I wasn’t staring at him.

Another 30 seconds. I thumb through the news stories, change the order. The music and announcer's voice ends, and I turn my attention back to the microphone.

“This is KWLF news. I'm Lisa Powers, filling in for Pat Henderson. In this exclusive KWLF story, an East Valley woman says her father is missing, and she suspects foul play,” I read from my script. “Joan Rogers-Hartley says her dad, 67-year-old Mark Rogers, took off early Sunday morning to drive to Northern Arizona for a bird watching trip—but never arrived. According to her, she thinks something is very wrong.”

I tap a red button on the cart machine marked ROGERS-HARTLEY SOT, which starts Joan’s voice.

“He was supposed to meet some friends of his in Clarkdale, where they were going to look for northern cardinals and red-winged hawks for a couple of days,” Hartley says, sniffling. “But they said he never made it.”

I continue. “Rogers-Hartley says Chandler police are quote 'dragging their feet,' unquote. KWLF Radio will follow this story and bring updates throughout the day. Anyone with any knowledge of the whereabouts of Mark Rogers is asked to call police.

“In other local news, the Chandler City Council meets in study session tonight to discuss rezoning of a large parcel of land initially slated for commercial development to be changed to residential. Grant Pope has details.”

I hit a button and Grant’s voice is heard. I lean back and listen.

Grant opens the door to the booth and pokes his head in.

“Was that missing man story on the wire?”

Uh-oh, I knew he’d ask that.

“Nope, the daughter called last night while I was here working on another story.” I could tell by Grant's frown he wasn't pleased. “I know, I know, we don’t usually do missing person stories until the police are called in, but that woman was really spooked. She seriously thinks he's in trouble. And we did get the exclusive...”

“All right, stay on it.”

Yes! “Of course, I'll follow up as soon as Pat gets here. He is going to be in today, right?”

“As far as I—”

I hold up a finger to indicate silence, as the tagline “Grant Pope for KWLF Radio” is heard. As Grant slips out the door, I turn back to the mic and continue to read more news.

EXCERPT:

“What are your plans for the week?” Mateu asked me.

“Nothing much. Business has been slow, so I’m thinking of giving a class.” Usually I supplemented my income by giving classes in various forms of magic. I taught runes, potion making, and other activities. Sometimes it was struggle to keep things afloat and earn enough to pay for rent, but my store served a purpose in the community and I enjoyed the work. I also liked being in charge of my own work hours. Like many of the other specialty stores in El Born, I opened and closed my store whenever I wanted. And my customers were okay with it. Most of them had my phone number and I left a note on the door for those who didn’t. If I was nearby, I could return to the store and help them with what they needed.

“Do you want me to tell the other gargoyles to talk up your services? Give you a small marketing push?”

I shook my head. “No, that’s okay, I kind of need this week to prepare. I have a speaker visiting the store next week. It’s going to require a lot of coordination and work. I’ve told the local covens but I’m going to have to send out reminders.”

“Whatever you like. If you change your mind, let me know.” Mateu returned to people-watching.

To drum up work and business, I had put together a little event for witches and wizards. I had invited many of the nearby covens to sign up. I had ordered a lot of inventory and had to send out a newsletter letting them know what was in the store. I hoped that would help increase sales.

“In fact…” My voice trailed off. Mateu’s shoulders had stiffened and his body was on alert as he stared out the window. I tensed. “What’s wrong?”

“Come over here,” Mateu said, still focused on whatever he saw outside the window. I walked around the counter and made my way to him. He got to his feet and stared intently at the street. As soon as I was within arm’s length of him, he asked me, “Do you see that woman?”

“Which one?” I searched among the people outside the store. Locals walked past us going about their daily lives while tourists gawked at everything they saw. Across the street was a larger group of tourists. They were focused on the tour guide who held a cane and pointed at various landmarks around them.

“The one in the red T-shirt. She’s part of the group.”

I resumed my search and spotted the woman he was talking about. She stood across the street, her body turned away from us. She gestured at the same buildings the tour guide did and talked to her companion who appeared to be bored from the restless way her head darted around looking at anything but the building in question.

“Yes? What about her?” Before the words had left my mouth, the woman turned slightly towards us and I immediately saw the problem.

A mark over her eye pulsed with a faint blue glow.

“Do you think she knows someone’s cast a spell on her?” Mateu asked me.

EXCERPT:

Swallowing the bile rising in the back of my throat, I close my human eye again and zoom in through the scope. I move the rifle until the crosshairs rest over Drummond’s forehead.

“I’m taking the shot.”

“Wait,” Dax says. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”

Disbelief drops my jaw, but I don’t take my eyes off the president. “What? Why the hell not?”

“Listen to me, B,” he says, his voice sounding closer. I feel him crouching beside me. “If we kill him now, they’ll just say we did it to silence him. Don’t you understand? If we kill him now, he’ll look like a martyr.”

My palms break out in a sweat, and Drummond’s voice fades to an unintelligible warble as my blood begins to rush so fast I can hear it roaring in my ears. Dax is right … but Drummond is in my sights. The man who destroyed our lives and killed my family. The man who murdered Yasmine and threatened to come for the rest of us.

“I have to,” I whisper, curling my finger around the trigger once more, shaking my head to clear it. “We came all this way.”

“Undetected,” Dax argues. “We can leave the same way. It’s not too late.”

“Yes, it is,” I argue. “It’s too late to go back! I won’t get another shot like this.”

“We’ll find another way,” he insists, his hand now on my shoulder. “A way that doesn’t make us look like the terrorists he’s making us out to be.”

I jerk away from his hold and refocus through the scope. “You can only treat someone like shit for so long before they snap. You can’t keep backing people into a corner without expecting them to eventually come out swinging. Drummond wants me to be a terrorist? Fine … I’ll earn my fucking spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. I’m taking the goddamn shot.”

Dax whispers a string of curses under his breath, but he doesn’t physically try to stop me. He doesn’t touch me again. I think it’s because, deep down, he wants to see this fucker pay for what he did to Yasmine. He wants to see Drummond fall, even though he knows the consequences we’ll face for it.

I zoom in a little closer … so close it feels like I’m staring directly into his cold, dead eyes. Spittle gathers in the corners of his mouth as he gets really riled up, waving his hands and pointing as he raises his voice to rally the crowd to his side. All around the world, people are buying into this … believing every poisonous word that comes from his mouth.

It’s time to silence him once and for all.

Taking another deep breath, I hold it as I prepare for my moment of truth. I see my father falling to the ground with a bullet in his skull … my mother sobbing hysterically as Skyye’s insides paint our front lawn red. And the hot rage in my veins goes cold like ice, freezing there as the entire world around me goes still.

As I exhale, my finger squeezes the trigger.

EXCERPT:

PROLOGUE

“What are you doing here?” The tension around me palpable, she hurried aside to let me enter before closing the door behind us.

My blood boiled.

My skin crawled that she’d let him do that to her.

I had to get rid of it.

The taint.

Purify her.

“What have you done? You’re mine, Evie. I told you, when I came back, you’d be mine and now look at yourself.” Disgust was as clear in my voice as it was in my expression.

“Wh-whatever it is…we can talk this out,” she stuttered, her feet inching her backward as I followed her movements.

Reaching to the small of my back, my fingers wrapped around the grip as I pulled it from its sheath. The eight-inch blade caught the glint of the afternoon sun, mesmerizing me, causing me to admire the play of light against it before I focused on the woman before me.

Her eyes shone with terror. “You don’t…” She shook her head left to right, swallowing hard, stumbling against the side table next to the sofa. “You don’t have to do this.” She righted herself. “We can still be together. Now that…now that you’re back–”

I shot her an incredulous look. Did she think me a fool? “You’ve gone and done the unthinkable. You had his child!” I hollered, my knuckles gripping the knife tightly. “This is the only way…the only way to get rid of the stain.”

Her steps froze momentarily. “Stain?”

“It’s what I should have done a while ago,” I spat, cornering her as her steps were halted by the wall at her back. “What you took from me…what should have been mine,” I raged, “is what I’ll take from you.”

One moment my eyes darted toward the hallway where I knew the devil lay in slumber, and the next, Eva Peters was making a mad rush toward the door that separated me from saving us all.

“No!” she panted. “You’re crazy!”

If she only knew. “Move, Evie,” I growled, “it’s the only way.”

“She’s not here. Please!” Tears streamed down her face, her body shaking with fear.

Using the tip of the blade, I ran it over her soaked cheek, the metal sharp enough to catch on her ivory skin, causing a streak of blood to suddenly materialize.

I felt lighter instantly.

Powerful.

In control. A feeling I hadn’t had in quite some time.

Manning my knife, I proceeded to run the tip of it down to her bottom lip, nicking it just enough for another bubble of her essence to form.

“Mmm…” I groaned, leaning forward to press my front against hers, taking the time to lick her damaged lip, then whispered my new realization while rubbing my impossibly hard cock against her stomach. “I was wrong. This…” I ran my finger through the blood on her cheek, watching its movement, “is what I need, Evie.”

The sadness was overwhelming as I stared at the beauty laying limp and lifeless beneath me.

The rage I’d felt had all but dissipated with each slice of my blade through her flesh. Like a hot knife through butter, each time blood began to pour out, a weight lifted within me.

What once held pleading in her eyes, was now long gone.

She was nothing but a piece of art, trussed up by her silk scarves, a vessel conveying my message.

I’d be back…
