On Davis Row by N.R. Walker

On Davis Row
N.R. Walker
Publication date: November 27th 2017
Genres: Adult, LGBTQ+, Romance

Nearing the end of a suspended jail sentence should unlock a brighter future for CJ Davis, only the chip on his shoulder is as hard to shift as his bad reputation. Born into a family of career criminals who live down Davis Road, an address the cops have dubbed Davis Row, his name alone is like a rap sheet that makes optimism impossible.

Brand-new parole officer Noah Huxley is determined to see the good in men like CJ. After all, he knows firsthand that bad things can happen to good people. His colleagues mock his doe-eyed optimism, but Noah soon sees CJ’s bad attitude and bravado are weapons he uses to keep people at a distance.

Both men know one simple mistake can change a life forever. At first glance, they might seem to be polar opposites. Yet underneath, they’re not that different at all.

EXCERPT:

I ran my thumb across the back of his hand, marvelling at how nice it felt.

“What?” he asked, smiling at our joined hands.

“Nothing. I just wondered why people held hands. It feels nice.”

He blinked. “You’ve never held hands before?”

“Uh, no. I told you I ain’t ever had a boyfriend before. And random hook-up guys in the backroom of HQ aren’t there to hold hands.”

“Oh, of course. Sorry.” He threaded our fingers and used both hands to hold my one. “Do you like it?”

I nodded. “Yeah. But my hands are stained. The oil and grease at work just gets ingrained.”

He held up my hand and took a closer look at the blackened fingernail beds and in the creases, the callouses. “I like it,” he said, turning my hand over and looking at each side. Then he grinned at me. “Tells me you’re good with your hands.”

I didn’t want to laugh at the corny line but couldn’t help it. “I’ve never had any complaints.”

“I should think not,” he said, still smiling. “You know, maybe we should start a list of firsts. First hand-holding, first boyfriend . . . anything else we should add?”

I ignored his pry for more information. “What is it with you and lists?”

He grinned. “What can I say? I like to see my own progress.”

We both sat there holding hands and smiling at each other like giddy schoolboys. This was getting absurd. “I should probably go.”

“I’m adding first sleepover to the list.”

I snorted and stood up, reluctantly pulling my hand from his. “Thanks for lunch, and the drink. And helping me with the reading and stuff. And thank you for telling me about you.”

“Thank you for listening.” He stood up, getting to his full height with just an inch between us. He looked at my mouth, then leaned in slowly and almost kissed me. My heart damn near stopped. But he pressed himself against me, with his cheek to mine and his warm breath at my ear. I gasped as a shiver ran through me. “What are you doing?” I whispered.

“Counting down the days,” he replied, a soft murmur in my ear.

I took a step back, dizzy. “Whoa.”

His grin made his eyes do that crinkling thing, which didn’t help at all. “Still think you won’t beg me to kiss you in two weeks?”

“You don’t play fair.”

“Never said I did. But for what it’s worth, I’m playing for real.”

Meet the Author:

Justine Avery is an award-winning author of stories large and small for all. Born in the American Midwest and raised all over the world, she is inherently an explorer, duly fascinated by everything around her and excitedly noting the stories that abound all around. As an avid reader of all genres, she weaves her own stories among them all. She has a predilection for writing speculative fiction and story twists and surprises she can’t even predict herself.

Avery has either lived in or explored all 50 states of the union, over 36 countries, and all but one continent; she lost count after moving 30-sometimes before the age of 20. She’s intentionally jumped out of airplanes and off the highest bungee jump in New Zealand, scuba dived unintentionally with sharks, designed websites, intranets, and technical manuals, bartered with indigenous Panamanians, welded automobile frames, observed at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Noba, Japan, and masterminded prosperous internet businesses—to name a few adventures. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree that life has never required, and at age 28, she sold everything she owned and quit corporate life—and her final “job”—to freelance and travel the world as she always dreamed of. And she’s never looked back.

Aside from her native English, Avery speaks a bit of Japanese and a bit more Spanish, her accent is an ever-evolving mixture of Midwestern American with notes of the Deep South and indiscriminate British vocabulary and rhythm, and she says “eh”—like the Kiwis, not the Canadians. She currently lives near Los Angeles with her husband, British film director Devon Avery, and their three adopted children: Becks, Sam, and Lia. She writes from wherever her curiosity takes her.

Avery loves to connect with fellow readers and creatives, explorers and imaginers, and cordially invites you to say “hello”—or konnichiwa.

Review Tour: The Chaos Stories: Tales of Magic, Terror, Passion and Blood by Charles O'Keefe

THE CHAOS STORIES
by Charles O'Keefe

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Supernatural/Fantasy/Sci-Fi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Here you'll find nine new short-stories, some which have been from my life, or things that could have happened. One is inspired from the many games of Dungeons and Dragons I've played over twenty years while another is from the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. Some are even some from other authors, who kindly contributed to my collection.

As a treat for fans of my series, I have included six deleted chapters, two from each of the three Newfoundland Vampire novels, which have been all cleaned up and have been made better than ever for your reading pleasure.

I have also included not one, but two chapters from the upcoming fourth book in the Newfoundland Vampire series, War of the Fangs. I've filled this collection with tales that will make you laugh, or will scare you, and will hopefully make you think a little about the world around us and the people in it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
When he opened his eyes   he noticed a red glow to her spine.  WTF!  Steve was too stunned to speak.  The red glow faded as he almost fell off the bed.  Angela kissed his neck, snuggling beside him, not noticing his dismay or wide open mouth.  Finally he summoned the courage to speak.
“Your spine glowed red.  Is there something I need to know about you?”
“Oh come now, you didn't know?  Why do you think I loved your Battlestar shirt so much?  Didn't you notice I look just like Cylon Number Six?  Sure you did.  Disney wanted to test me out on one of its tech geeks.  You got lucky.  So, I was good?”
“You're a Cylon?  Does that mean we're starting a whole new race?”
“No silly,” answered Angela, slapping Steve playfully.  “It means the bosses finally granted you a promotion.  You'll be featured as the main exhibit at the new Disney theme park.  It's quite an honor being bestowed upon you.  I hope you fully appreciate the confidence Disney has in your work. “
Realizing the full extent of his situation, Steve made a break for the door.  Too late.  Angela was on him, wielding handcuffs as she slammed him to the floor.
“This is kinky,” commented Angela as she slapped on the bracelets.
Angela dragged Steve by his hair, still naked, to a waiting van outside, where Daffy Duck and Pluto robots drove him away to his new Disney adventure.
My Review
This is a book of 9 short stories, all of which end in some form of Chaos. The stories range from a a bad night that ends in death to a Parody of Trump/Clinton spoof I guess you could call it. I enjoyed all the stories in this book. Made it through 3 stories while in the waiting room at my doctor's office.
One of my favorite stores is a man having a bad day. As he is walking home on a cold night things keep creeping him out. He gets a phone call while walking and makes plans for an evening of drinking. A he is almost home a truck comes sliding and hits him. He passes away but can you guess who is driving the truck?
Also at the end there is a section of 2 chapters of the upcoming 4th book from the  Mr. O'Keefe's Newfoundland Vampire series.
Thanatos arrived in Olympus City, it saw the rise of its first
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks
EXCERPT:
I hear a voice behind me.
‘Need some help with that?’
I spin around.
It takes a couple of seconds for my brain to confirm that it’s actually him. That it’s actually Jake McCallister standing in front of me and not a hallucination. My heart does this fierce smash and rebound against my ribs as though it’s been violently woken from hibernation. I draw in a breath so big it feels like my lungs might explode, as if all that air is filling a vacuum and I’ll never be able to let it out again.
I hate this feeling. Hate the way the adrenaline floods my blood stream and tears sting my eyes. Hate the way my body reacts in a thousand contradictory ways at the sight of him, as though someone has plugged me into a wrong socket and fried all my synapses.
I have an impulse to throw myself at him but I’m not sure if it’s because I want to hug him or beat the living crap out of him. I drop the kayak, my hands fisting automatically at my sides.
I watch the smile on his lips fade when he notices the set of my jaw. His expression had started off wary but now I see him swallow and press his lips together, something he always does when he’s nervous.
I take note of that and at the same time notice a dozen other tiny, insignificant, monumental details about this new old Jake. I see the faded white scar on his chin—the one I gave him and the new scar cutting across his eyebrow. Then there’s his height – we were always the same height but now he’s tall. . . much taller than me. His dark brown hair is the same, though – unruly, untamed, falling in his eyes. He’s looking at me with the same mix of uncertainty that he looked at me the very last time I saw him.
I glance away, down at the sand. My whole body is shaking and I can’t seem to get it under control.
‘Em?’ I hear him say.
My head flies up before I can stop it. No one calls me that any more. His voice is deeper, mellower. The inflection though when he says my name is still just the same… and instantly something inside me starts coming undone. Jake always used to say my name like it belonged to him, and only him.
EXCERPT:
“You’re dead.” The drunk sneers.
The chick squats down and snatches up the half broken bottle. She throws a quick glance over her shoulder, probably to look for an exit strategy. That’s the moment we lock eyes. The corner of her mouth tips up in a smile, as if she fucking sees me. Sliding her eyes slightly down, she eyes the right side of my cut where it states ‘Death By Reaper MC’.
Os slaps the back of his hand against my pecs. “Dude. Are you visible right now? ‘Cause I swear it seems as if she’s looking right at you.”
Normally we keep in the shadows, it’s just easier that way. Like now. I know I’m not visible to humans, but it seems she can see me.
“Now you’ve done it.” Her voice is like a gentle caress when she talks to the drunk. “The reapers are coming for you,” she adds in a fucking sing-song voice.
“What the fuck? She knows what we are?” I growl. “How the hell…”
I don’t get a chance to finish my sentence because the drunk lunges forward. Before I can reach the chick, she sidesteps and kicks him in the back, making him face plant into the pavement.
The chick throws the crushed bottle she’s holding against the wall. “You two can handle this further, right? I have a train to catch.”
What the? “Os, reap the drunk’s soul,” I order before I catch up with the woman who’s hightailing it out of here and heading for the platform.
With her next breath, I’ve got her pinned against the wall with my body, blocking her every exit strategy. My nose trails a path down the curve of her neck. The hoodie she’s wearing over her head falls down, exposing her neck some more. Underneath her skin I can clearly see a vein where her heartbeat picks up speed. My fangs elongate and my mouth waters from her incredible sweet scent as I nuzzle her neck.
I just can’t help myself, it’s like an automatic craving that has been triggered. It seems to be the same way for her because her lower body arches forward in the limited space she has. This chick shivers in my grip and with that releases a turmoil of emotion inside me. Reaching the spot where her neck meets her collarbone, I have no control over what happens next.
Her head tilts, a submissive gesture, as if she’s granting me permission; offering herself to me. A true mate is one in a million, a connection that’s mutual, a pull you will only feel once in your life and know the second it hits. And it’s hitting me now, full force.
