Excerpt 1:
The dark garage parking lot was dimly lit by a flashing light fixture above the wall. The concrete floor echoed with footsteps of those who made their way to their cars. Emilia Long stood in the shadows checking the time on her cell phone. She leaned against the cold cement wall and folded her arms in nervous anticipation.
She then heard the sound of heels clunking against the concrete floor of the garage. She peeked out from the shadows and waved over a tall blond woman who was dressed in a neatly tailored skirt suit. Emilia had been in communication with the woman for some time. She was on the brink of breaking a national story against one of the wealthiest men in the state of New York. The woman was the wealthy man’s Executive Assistant and mistress. She was the only one who could give Emilia what she needed to break the story.
As an Investigative Reporter, Emilia had broken many news stories, but this was going to be the biggest. She’d hope that the woman hadn’t changed her mind and had brought with her all the documents that Emilia needed to write her story.
The woman approached Emilia holding a briefcase in her hand. Emilia smiled at her but could see the uncertainty on the woman’s face.
“I’m glad you came,” Emilia said to the woman.
“Well, I almost didn’t,” the woman replied.
She opened her briefcase and pulled out a large file. She hesitantly handed it over to Emilia.
“Everything you need is in there,” the woman said.
“Thank you so much for this. What are you going to do now?” Emilia replied with gratitude.
“I told him that my mother was sick, so I was taking a leave of absence. When this hits, it’s probably going to be an indefinite leave of absence,” the woman said.
“I promise, I won’t use your name. I don’t want this to disturb your life. He never has to know that this came from you,” Emilia told her.
“My life has been disturbed for a long time. I’ve just been in denial about it,” the woman said.
“What do you mean?” Emilia asked.
“Is this going to be part of your story?” the woman responded.
“Absolutely not. It’s strictly off the record. Besides, it looks like you need someone to talk to,” Emilia said.
“I’m from a small town in Maine. It’s beautiful there. The water, the air, you can’t imagine anything more peaceful. As I look back now, I’m not sure why I ever left. I guess I was chasing something. Anyway, I came to New York for college and never looked back. I barely called home,” the woman explained.
“Home is always there. At least that’s what I hear,” Emilia said.

“That’s what I hear too. So, I’m finally going back. It’s time for me to figure myself out,” the woman said.

Interview with J.E. Smythe
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story? I have absolutely no control over my story. My characters own it one hundred percent. It’s their story, I’m just telling it. Convince us why you feel your book is a must read. Every book that I write is with the intent that my reader will sit, open up my book, and won’t be able to get up until they are done reading it. “Secrets in the Woods: An Emilia Long Mystery” is no different. There are so many plot twist in this book that it will be difficult for the reader to put the book down without wondering what’s going to happen next. It’s filled with danger and tales of love both lost and found. It takes the reader on a wild journey and just when you think you’ve figured it out, something else happens. Have you written any other books that are not published? No. I’ve published every book that I’ve ever sat down to write. But my head is still filled with so many other books that I just can’t wait to share with world. Pen or type writer or computer? I start with a pen, to organize my thoughts, and then I end up with a computer. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans? I just want to say thank you. It means so much to have to have people read what I write and enjoy it. I just appreciate everyone who reads the stories that I tell. It means everything to me. Continue to read and I promise to continue to give you great stories.

Dream On by Stacey Keith

Dream
On
by
Stacey Keith
Genre:
Contemporary Romance

Deep
in the heart of Texas is a small town where secret wishes have a
funny way of coming true . . .

With
a nine-year-old daughter, an overdue light bill, and a job slinging
burgers while zooming around on roller skates, Cassidy Roby is not
living the glamorous life. But Cuervo, Texas, has its charms: quiet
streets, loving family, and the down-home familiarity of knowing
which of your neighbors are mean as snakes. With Cassidy’s
reputation, she knows what will happen if she steps a foot out of
line. But how can she help it now that Mason Hannigan’s back in
town?

As
Cuervo’s high school quarterback ten years ago, Mason was all
rock-hard abs and yes-ma’am manners. Now that he’s living the
glitz and glory of the NFL, he’s all that plus a couple million
bucks. The desire blazing between them is too hot to hide. Cassidy
has some experience getting her heart broken by the hometown hero—and
having the whole world watch her try to pick up the pieces. Will
adding fame, fortune, and paparazzi be a playbook for disaster—or
lead to the biggest adventure of her life?

Excerpt #2

“Damn,” Mason’s friend and linebacker, Jasper, said after a low whistle. “That is one sweet little hometown honey.”
In the back seat, Mason’s two other teammates leaned forward expectantly.
“Where?” Temple demanded to know.
“Sit your bitch ass down,” Brian, his seatmate, told him. “I can’t see.”
“I told you Cuervo was the bomb,” Mason said, but then as the honey drew closer—on skates, no less— his hands tightened around the steering wheel.
It was Cassidy Roby.

Mason blinked. Refocused. He’d forgotten how much his type she was. He’d forgotten … well, a lot of things. She hadn’t changed one bit. Same glossy ponytail, all sun-streaked and blonde. Same perfect little body. The skates made her taller, but he knew that without them, she barely reached his shoulder. Why her type had always appealed to him, he didn’t exactly know, but petite and wholesome did a whole different number on him than the women he found himself dating these days—beautiful, yes. Models, yes. But they were all cheekbones and sharp shoulders. Give them a salad and they’d push away the croutons. Yet these were the women who traveled in his circle now. After a while, it seemed they all wore the same hungry look, and it wasn’t a look that warmed a man’s blood.

The It Girl and Me by Laini Giles

The It Girl and Me: A Novel of Clara Bow by Laini Giles

Publication Date: March 25, 2017
Sepia Stories Publishing
eBook & Paperback; 341 Pages

Series: Forgotten Actresses, Book #2
Gere: Historical Fiction/Biographical

Daisy DeVoe has left her abusive husband, her father has been pinched for bootlegging, and she’s embarrassed by her rural Kentucky roots. But on the plus side, she’s climbing the ladder in the salon of Paramount Pictures, styling hair for actress Clara Bow.

Clara is a handful. The “It” Girl of the Jazz Age personifies the new woman of the 1920s onscreen, smoking, drinking bootleg hooch, and bursting with sex appeal. But her conduct off the set is even more scandalous. Hoping to impose a little order on Clara’s chaotic life, Paramount persuades Daisy to sign on as Clara’s personal secretary.

Thanks to Daisy, Clara's bank account is soon flush with cash. And thanks to Clara, Daisy can finally shake off her embarrassing past and achieve respectability for herself and her family.

The trouble begins when Clara’s newest fiancé, cowboy star Rex Bell, wants to take over, and he and Daisy battle for control. Torn between her loyalty to Clara and her love for her family, Daisy has to make a difficult choice when she ends up in the county jail.

Here, Daisy sets the record straight, from her poverty-stricken childhood to her failed marriage; from a father in San Quentin to her rollercoaster time with Clara, leaving out none of the juicy details.

Excerpt:
When I got back to Clara’s place, her modiste, Lillian, had arrived and was showing her the new spring designs.
“Clara, this frock is simply divine. A must-have for the season. Look at the way it hangs, with this lovely, artful drape and the pointed seamings here and here.”
Clara cocked her head at her reflection in the three-way mirror. The spangled black silk with flat crepe accents, jet paillettes, and tulle trimmings was stunning.
“Okay. I’ll take it,” she said, smacking her gum.
Fame was nothing I’d really considered before now, but since the fans made it hard for Clara to shop among regular folk out at department stores, Adela had referred her to Lillian Morris.
Lillian called herself a modiste, but she was more like a courier. She visited exclusive boutiques in Europe, bought multiple colors and sizes of the styles, and made the rounds of the stars’ homes. Convenient for them and easy money for her. She could mark the designs up as much as she wanted and pocket the difference.
Lillian was a walking advertisement for her service. She favored variations of green, which brought out her hazel-gold cat’s eyes. Her lustrous dark hair was always tucked under one of the newest hats of the season, and she always accessorized with the perfect bauble for any outfit.
Clara didn’t know a thing about fashion, but she knew she was expected to dress a certain way for certain events, and Lillian gave her wise advice. She couldn’t completely stop Clara from wearing shorts and high heels together, but she did her best.
Clara stepped out of the black number and reached for the next item. The dress fluttered into a pool of silk at her feet.
“This,” Lillian began, “is a sports ensemble from Jane Regny. Smart white piqué with mint jacquard trim. And an optional jacket as well.”
Clara slipped it on and frowned. “Nah. This ain’t me at all. Makes my tits look invisible!” She took it off and tossed it to the floor, stepping over it getting to the next item.
Lillian deftly slipped it back onto the hanger before it could wrinkle and laid it on the pile of items Clara had discarded. Then she collected the black frock as well.
“What’s this?” Clara said, grabbing another dress.
“Amethyst crepe! From Vernon of Paris. As dainty as springtime, don’t you think? One of my favorites.”
Clara pulled it on and waited for Lillian to do up the buttons, then pursed her mouth at the mirror. “Sure, why not?” she said.
Lillian and I glanced at each other, wondering how best to tell her how unflattering the color was. Clara didn’t understand tact, so it was hard for her to recognize it coming from others.
“Clara,” Lillian began gently, “the light purple isn’t quite as flattering with your complexion and red hair. Perhaps you might want to reconsider the green?”
She held up an emerald-green dress Clara had already tried on and discarded in favor of a turquoise playsuit for weekends in Malibu.
“Yeah, okay. Gimme that one instead.” I undid the buttons for her, she shrugged the lilac off, and Lillian picked it up from its place on the floor.
I folded the emerald over my arm and Lillian collected the others as we came to the last of Clara’s selections for the month.
“Daisy, look through those and see if ya want anything,” Clara said.
“What? I can’t do that,” I said, caught by surprise.
“Why not?”

“Because she’s billing you, that’s why.”

About the Author

Originally from the counterculture mecca of Austin, Texas, Laini discovered a love of reading early on, and when she was eight, decided to be Nancy Drew. This dream was dashed when she realized she was actually a big chicken, and that there were no guarantees of rescue from tarantulas, bad guys with guns, and other fiendish plot twists. She finished her first "mystery novel" (with custom illustrations) when she was nine.

She set the writing aside for a while when life got in the way, but was led back to it through her interest in genealogy and 18 months of enforced unemployment due to moving north for maple-flavored goodies and real beer. Reading old microfilm stirred new life into her interest in writing, and watching early silent films struck the match.

Like most other writers, most of her monthly budget is spent on coffee and books. She lives with her husband and their two gray cats in Edmonton, Alberta.
