Author Bio:

Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

EXCERPT:

He jogged up the stairs to the fifth floor. Turning into the main hall, Vinnie made his way toward his apartment while digging in his pocket for the key and almost collided with three suitcases and a stack of boxes blocking his path.

Someone was moving out…or in, given the person was fiddling with the lock—with a hanger. He had moved in a couple days before his trip to California and hadn’t met any neighbors, but he did recall seeing a tall blonde woman walking out of this apartment one morning as he came in from his morning jog. This one was a few inches over five feet, and although he couldn’t see much, dark hair peeked out of the white knit cap on her head.

“Hey, can I help you?” he called.

She shrieked and dropped the hanger. “I can’t find my key and locked myself out.”

He knew that voice. “If that’s the case, why don’t you call the super?”

“My phone’s dead, and I don’t have his number.”

Vinnie pulled out his phone. “Then it’s a good thing I have it. I’ll give him a buzz.”

“No!” she cried and turned to face him.

Wide brown eyes framed by long brown lashes stared up at him.

“Hope?”

She pushed back the cap and brushed aside the bangs that fell into her eyes. “Vinnie. Funny meeting you here.”

“Same goes. You don’t live here,” Vinnie countered, surprised to be faced with one of the pantry chefs from where he worked.

Hope raised her hands. “I know how this looks, but I can explain.”

“You can explain why you’re trying to break into this apartment?”

“It’s my cousin Faith’s place. And I wasn’t breaking in.”

Vinnie raised an eyebrow and shifted his gaze to the hanger on the ground.

“Okay, so maybe it seems as though I was breaking in, but the key she gave me no longer works.” She reached in her coat pocket and withdrew a key similar to Vinnie’s.

“Did you try calling your cousin?”

“Gee, no, I didn’t think of that,” she sneered. “She’s on a cruise and then staying in Florida a few days for business. I wasn’t kidding about my phone dying and not knowing the super’s number.”

Vinnie felt a pain in his temple. Probably from not having enough to eat or drink on the red-eye from LA. “Fine, let’s get your stuff in my place. You can use my phone.”

Hope grabbed a handle of a suitcase. “Thanks, Vin. You’re nicer than people at work say.”

He paused while unlocking his door. Well, hell. Is that what they say about me? Guess he needed to do damage control with his staff. Even though his parents owned Trattoria DiFrancesco, Vinnie was the head chef and in charge of hiring of anyone who worked in the kitchen.

Including the pretty spitfire who had just swept past him, Hope Mastriano.

He hoisted the stack of boxes and followed her inside. When she headed back out, he perused the hall to see how much more stuff she had.

There were two more suitcases and a pet carrier.

“You run away or something?” Vinnie asked.

“Moved out of Steve’s place. I’m done with that deadbeat.”

“On Thanksgiving Day and with nowhere to go?”

“It’s been long overdue. Besides, I thought I could crash at Faith’s until I figured out my next step.”

“And in there?” He nodded to the carrier.

Hope raised it up a few inches. “This is Lucky, my cat.”

Vinnie was not a fan of cats, with their sharp eyes and sneaky ways. He peeked inside and into the green eyes of a white cat. He closed the front door and stepped around Hope’s stuff, including the cat, which she pulled out of the carrier. Lucky leaned forward and sniffed him before letting out a soft mew.

Between the pixie-haired cutie and the cat, the peace and relaxation he had found out west was a distant memory. By the time he got to the trattoria for Thanksgiving dinner, Vinnie was going to need a beer or glass of wine.

Possibly both.

The Mirror Said You're BE-YOU-TIFUL by Austiage

Title:
THE MIRROR SAID YOU’RE BE-YOU-TIFUL

Author: Austiage

Publisher: Independent

Pages: 212

Genre: Self-Help

In her motivational self-help book, THE MIRROR SAID, “YOU’RE
BE-YOU-TIFUL
, former elite athlete Austiage offers readers a
foundation for embracing their unique beauty in a world that doesn’t always
value diversity and individuality. Writing in a welcoming, conversational
style, Austiage outlines a plan for embracing a positive self-image that
develops from the inside out.
An unexpected question (“Does the mirror make you feel ugly?”) was the
spark that led Austiage to pen THE MIRROR SAID, “YOU’RE BE-YOU-TIFUL.” She
met the young girl, Julianne, who posed the question while donating supplies to
a children’s hospital. After talking with the girl about beauty and what it
means, the author felt moved to share her thoughts with others on this delicate
subject, which many people—young and old, male and female—frequently struggle
with. The book has a powerful message that begins by focusing on the
individual.
Austiage asserts that beauty is much more than aesthetic. She emphasizes
that character is an essential component of beauty and encourages readers to
bolster their character by being positive and kind to themselves and others.
The author repeatedly stresses the importance of having a strong belief in
one’s self and explains how this belief affects how people see themselves, the
type of people they invite into their lives, and the manner in which they take
care of themselves and pursue their goals.
THE MIRROR SAID, “YOU’RE BE-YOU-TIFUL” takes an in-depth look at the necessity of self-care including eating
well without foregoing pleasure, incorporating fitness and relaxation in one’s
daily life, using makeup to highlight and enhance one’s beauty, discarding fear
and doubt to follow opportunities to find one’s passion, and reevaluating
relationships to make conscious decisions about the people in one’s life.
Austiage says, “In my point of
view, my book is about helping those who are at the point in their lives that
they want to feel better about themselves. I think my book will help people
understand that they aren’t the only contributing factor in feeling good or bad
about themselves. Rather, the everyday lifestyle choices they make, the people
they surround themselves with, and the words they use all merge to develop a feeling
unique to how they feel about their identity. Learning how to break down
different aspects of daily life and to reevaluate them will dramatically change
the way they perceive themselves.” Austiage wrote THE MIRROR SAID, “YOU’RE
BE-YOU-TIFUL”
“to help everyone understand that they have the ability to
feel beautiful. Ultimately, I want readers to step away from my book feeling
happiness, beauty, and pride from the inside out.”

Getting Motivated for Your Purpose
Finding your
skills and talents—and using them—helps you become your best, beautiful self.
Maybe you know exactly what your talents are, or maybe you need to find them.
But everyone has a purpose on earth, and it is found through our talents and
passions. If you don’t know what your purpose is, you can find it. In reality,
you actually do know what your purpose is—you are the sole authority on who you
are. Maybe your talent is hidden and you have to find it. Or maybe you have taken
your talent for granted and no longer look upon it as a talent. Either way it
is there and it has always been there and all you have to do is notice it and
embrace it.
To identify
your purpose, ask yourself, “What makes me smile? What makes me happy?” Then
analyze your answers. It may not always seem clear at first, so keep thinking.
For example going out to restaurants with your friends and trying new foods
makes you the happiest. Most likely your purpose is not eating, but it may be
becoming a chef who creates new foods. Pay particular attention to environments
you are attracted to. What you enjoy doing, where you enjoy being, who you
enjoy spending time with—these are all part of your purpose in life.
When you feel
lost in your life, remember that no one is born found; at some point we need to
be lost in order to be found. When I’m feeling lost, I’ve learned not to say
that I am lost (that has a negative connotation); instead I say I am currently
on the path to becoming found.
Your purpose
cannot come by force, finding passions and your purpose in life will come when
it is time. You will find it even if you are feeling lost and destroyed. Many
times we need to break in order to be rebuilt into who we are supposed to
become.
Once you’re
purpose is clear, you become motivated. Self-motivation is so beautiful and
attractive, although it is not something aesthetic. Be the person who wakes up
with a purpose in life. Be the person who will chase their own dreams. People
will only start to motivate you when they realize that you already are
motivated.
Being
self-motivated is not only something that others are attracted to, but being a
self-motivated individual gives you a purpose in life which is then going to
create confidence within oneself. Feeling beautiful always comes down to feeling
confident and pride in ones self.
So many times
when we think of being self-motivated as something that is difficult or we
wonder if we have it in us to motivate ourselves. In reality becoming
self-motivated is 4 simple P’s: Passion, Purpose, Position and
Positivity.
§ Passion:
Ask yourself the questions: What am I passionate about? What do I love? What do
I never get tired of doing? If you can find something you are genuinely
passionate about you will always have a feeling of motivation regardless of how
hard you need to work to accomplish the goals you have set. When you are also
focused on doing something that you have a passion about you will also be a
happier person overall. Purpose: you now have a passion you want to be involved
in, now comes the tricky part is to determine what your mission is. You can
find your purpose my asking yourself these questions: What about my passion
inspires me? When determine what inspires within in a certain topic you have
purpose because you know understand how you want to be involved within your
passion.
Position:
Being able to figure out what it is that you want to do within this topic is
crucial. The best way to do this is to just get our a piece of paper and pen
and just start to brainstorm all the different positions you could to take on
with that passion, and once you have a list then just starting to number then
in order of priority—based on your skills and goals. From there you’ll be able
to determine what position you want to take on.
Positive:
Finally the last key on being able to being a self-motivated individual is to
always have a positive outlook on the situation. Obviously there are highs and
lows in life, so even if you are involved with some- thing that you are
passionate about there are going to be times where not everything will go
as you had planned. But understanding these situations and anticipating them
will allow you to keep a positive outlook and will allow you to stay
self-driven.

I never knew what he sacrificed to save my life. I never knew why he abandoned me all those years ago.

My soulmate. My first love. The only one I’ve ever wanted.

I moved on, tried to forget his smile, the way his hands felt on my skin.

But when my life gets dangerous again, he walks back into my store, white knight to the rescue.

The Mafia is breathing down our necks, threatening our second chance at romance.

But what they don’t realize is that our love makes us strong. Makes us dangerous.

The Mafia wants to kill us both, but we’re not going down without a fight.

This is a full-length romantic suspense novel that is Part 1 in an exciting new trilogy by Alexis Abbott. Explicit language. Safe from cheating.

The complete trilogy:

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

“After everything that’s happened today, I never expected a stranger to take that kind of time,” Serena says with a sigh.

“What’s happened today?” I ask, quirking a brow, and I see her cheeks tinge with a bit of color.

“Wh- oh, nothing. The guy who caused the accident just kind of ran off, is all,” she lies, averting her eyes to the setting sun outside.

“Dirty move,” I say, crossing my arms. “Good thing you run a soap store.”

She just stares at me in disbelief for a beat before she bursts into a laugh at my awful pun, covering her face for a moment. “Oh…wow,” she says, starting to take a few steps toward me. “Who are you?”

“Someone who can tell you’ve had too much on your plate for one day,” I say. Every muscle in my body wants to take a step toward her as well, to play the game between us that she’s slipping into already. I want to flirt with her, charm her all over again, even as a stranger, take her out for a good time. If I’m really honest, I want to bend her over that counter and take her right here and now.

But for her safety, I have to keep my distance.

“Oh, who am I kidding,” she says, running a hand through her hair and looking out the door. “You’re right. Today’s been a nightmare.” She looks back to me, eyes flitting up and down my form. “Thank you, though. Really. God, I feel so silly, you didn’t come here to-”

“Get some rest,” I say, her name on the tip of my tongue before I reel it back in. “I’ll come back by tomorrow. Maybe I can take care of any other messes that come up,” I say, a boyish smile on my face.

I see the color flush into her cheeks, and she loses her words for a moment before she says, “I’ll be here!”

She was a spoiled brat when I knew her, but even then, it was the easiest thing in the world to get her off her guard and swooning. But I liked that about her. She didn’t feel shame for her feelings. She felt everything intensely. It was good to see that hadn’t changed.

There’s so much more I want to say, but I step out into the cool air without another word to her as I hear her voice calling, “Wait, I didn’t get your name!”

I pretend not to hear.

Seeing how happy she is now, I can’t let our tangled past flood into her life and upset everything she has. She’s running her own business, for god’s sake.

How would she feel about me if she knew I was an enforcer for the mafia?

A lonely Korean pop star learns her high school classmate died five years ago. So why are they still texting?

Book Description:

Yubin knows she’s different than the other girls in the pop group SIITY. Yes, they all got sucked into the same machine, giving up schooling and signing ridiculously long contracts before anyone knew if they'd be successful, but that's how pop stars are made in Korea. Yubin is supposed to be thankful for that, but she isn't. She doesn't even like the girls she performs with.

She’s more connected to her former schoolmate Jieun, even though all they ever do is text. Over the last two months, Jieun has become her confidant and best friend, connecting Yubin to the real world in a way she desperately needs. Now that SIITY is going to appear on the reality show The Incredible Race: Asia, Yubin will need that connection more than ever, which is why she’s devastated to discover Jieun has been dead five years and is actually haunting her.

If that weren’t enough, Yubin’s not the only SIITY member with issues. Rena’s father is emotionally abusive. Somi has a learning disability, and after a near death experience, Tae-eun becomes a nine-tailed fox woman. The only way they’ll survive the show, each other, and the supernatural currents buffeting them is to work together and win the hearts of their fans. Because if they don’t, they have nothing to go back to even if they survive what's trying to kill them.

Excerpt
4 (542 Words):

Jieun

She was still
unaccustomed to spirit combat, but a small tempest swirled in the underworld
around her. Humans too felt the wind she created, their muscles tightened, and
more than a few quickened their pace to evade the chill. Scraps of litter
spiraled over real world concrete, and whips of black hair whirled in an angry
nimbus around Jieun’s face.
The shadowman
looked up. She'd expected empty pits of darkness where eyes should have been, but
when the creature ceased feeding, a set of all too human brown eyes that now
lacked eyelids appeared in the monster’s head. They contrasted with the rest of
its body in that while the majority of the creature lurked in shadow that was
darker than everything else in the Dead World, these two spheres burned as if
absorbing all the spirit light that should have detailed the shadowman’s body.
The flow of spirit energy that connected its ugly mouth to the girl stopped,
and the ghost realized that she held the creature’s attention.
The shade of an
eerily human face like black paint on even blacker canvas contorted in what
could have just as easily been taken for triumph or rage. It unleashed an
otherworldly snarl that was anything but human and charged Jieun. Though it had
a man's body, it rushed in an inhuman lope on all fours that seemed more like
an animal. Jieun darted out of the way—it wasn’t a conscious thing, and the
instinct may well have saved her dead life. If she hadn’t known before, alarm
she felt made her certain; ghosts could die a second death.
She whirled
after the attack expecting the shadowman behind her but it had vanished. She
sighed in relief. Then, without warning she saw the black shape leap from the
roof of a magazine stand just outside the subway station. She cried out in
alarm, and before its feet had touched the ground its giant mouth fastened on
her shoulder. The weight of the attack forced her to the ground, and in a
moment of dawning horror she realized it was impossible to escape.
She shrieked.
The pain was beyond anything she imagined possible for a spirit to experience.
It wasn’t like trailing her fingers through the wall, or even passing
completely through a physical object. Those pains were an affirmation of life,
cold shocks that, while not comfortable, served as a reminder that she was
still in some sense alive. The feeling of her spirit body being torn apart by
the shadowman’s teeth seemed as if the devil had run away with God’s scalpel
and used it to peel thick ribbons of her soul away from creation.
Though the
shadowman looked like and had similar features to a man, it made low growls
that were far distant from human speech. It wasn’t a language at all – if it
had been she’d have instinctually understood it. It shook its head like a
starved wolf and further tore into the fabric of firelines that composed her
spirit body. Its breath smelled of rotten flesh, and she could hear the pulse
of bestial rhythmic snorting in her ears. She needed a weapon. She didn’t have
one. This was it. Jieun would die… this time for real.

Interview with  Jun Prince

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

I've always been into ghosts, monsters, and supernatural worlds that are much like our own. In the case of The Beautiful Dead I was also really into K-Pop while studying at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, and tried to bring the two together.

The spark hit after class. It was cold out, so I tucked my head into large headphones that doubled as ear muffs for the 20-30 minute walk home.   I listened to "News" by Nine Muses and slipped into an awesome and intense daydream about a Korean pop star being possessed by a ghost during a photo shoot.

There was something there. I saw faces, situations, and characters I'd never written before.   I put that bad boy on repeat for over an hour and the daydream became more complex with each repetition.  Before long, I had every thing I needed to write the short story that had been assigned in class.  That story became the foundation of my novel. It's since been revised countless times, and is now the photo-shoot possession scene in the final version of The Beautiful Dead.

How did you do research for your book?

I'm not a Korean pop star, but rather than just imagining what life must be life for idols, I made an effort to get as close to the Korean entertainment industry as possible.  One awesome thing about Korea is that celebrities are far more accessible than in the USA. I remember on the plane to Seoul I thought "One of my goals is to meet Hyomin (T-ara) in person while I'm here." Literally within the first few days of arrival I'd met her, the rest of T-Ara, and 2PM.  I thought "Well shit, I'm going to have to set less achievable goals."

I started going to TV studios to watch the recordings of TV music shows several times a week.  After a while, people began recognizing me as that one foreigner always hanging around the TV stations.  I got to meet a lot of popular singers and groups during this time.

One day I was treated to an over 8 hour behind the scenes tour at KBS where I was able to watch band after band get ready for their studio recordings.  It was amazing. During promo events I paid close attention to the demeanors of the stars—did they seem happy? Tired? Burdened?  Did their attitudes change as soon as the cameras started rolling?  This was all useful information.  I got to see what they typically ate for lunch. Some talked off the record about their lives in dorms owned by their record companies, and I was shocked by the lack of privacy.  One time, I was present for the filming of a TV drama.  Each event gave me a little more experience to draw on.

Later, I was asked if I'd like to appear on a Korean cooking show, Olive Show, as a guest.  I accepted in a heartbeat.  If I didn't have experiences of my own to draw on, I made them. Writing started to feel a lot like method acting, as I actively sought to put myself in situations that my characters found themselves in.  In this case, sitting in a TV studio and being filmed for television.  It was method writing.

Aside from that, several years of living in Korea was great for understanding the non-supernatural setting because I was surrounded by the world I was writing.  Living in there  as a foreigner allowed me to take note of everyday things that were different from living at home.  For example, I had two different Korean friends that would take their fried chicken off the bone and pull it apart with two forks on a plate when we went out.  I'd never seen anyone do this, so I took a mental snapshot and included it in my novel.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

I've been a literature teacher in the past, and I have a day job, but it's not exactly what I'd call a profession because it's not my passion. My ultimate goal is to make enough money writing that I can do it full time.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

Assuming this is a one way trip, I'd go back to the 90s and experience them with the freedom that comes with not being a middle or high school student. I'd go to see all my favorite bands from that era in concert, and visit places like Seoul so that I can have a proper appreciation for how places like it have exploded in the last few decades.

Assuming I can't bring anything with me, I'd study major sporting events before leaving to generate start up cash with bets, buy the right stocks, start mining bitcoins in 2009, and live off that income. I'd still write because I love it, but it'd be nice not to have to worry about paying the bills while doing it.

What is your next project?

I'm almost finished with my second book, Grey, which explores alien abduction in the Pacific Northwest.  It's a very different novel from The Beautiful Dead.

After that I'm torn between either trying my hand at a LitRPG, or diving into a series of character specific novellas focusing on individual protagonists from my first book.  Eventually there will be a full length sequel to The Beautiful Dead where all the characters are working together as a group.
