About the Author:

Cheryl R. Lane was born and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, and went to college at East Tennessee State University before marrying her high school sweetheart and moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

She started writing as a hobby when she was in college after purchasing a couple of Southern Heritage cookbooks, which were filled with pages of beautiful old plantation homes. She used to sit outside in her backyard and type on a manual typewriter at a picnic table under tall maple trees.

She continued writing after moving to Virginia Beach and visiting beautifully restored homes in Williamsburg as well as plantations on the James River. She has been working in medical and now legal transcription while writing on the side, and finally decided to self-publish her first novel in December 2012.  She enjoys the freedom and creativity of self-publishing.

She loves being outside in nature and her hobbies include visiting historical homes and gardens, reading, traveling, exercising, and going to the beach.  She is still married to her sweetheart after 29 years, and they have one son who is an actor and a Havanese bichon.

Meet Benjamin

Hi!  I’m Cheryl R. Lane, and I am the author of two romance series:  the historical romance Wellington Cross Series and the paranormal romance Angel series.  Today I’d like to discuss one of the characters from my new book, Wellington Letters, book six in the Wellington Cross Series.  His name is Benjamin.

Benjamin Morehouse was a kind, brave man who had dark wavy hair, full beard and mustache, and long lashes surrounding green eyes.  He was a corporal in the Union Army in 1864 during the Civil War.  Originally from New York, he was one of a small band of men leftover from the Battle of Cold Harbor.  His group had discovered a spy in their midst who had escaped with a bullet wound but carried a secret letter he was determined to deliver to a Confederate colonel.  Ben’s leader, Sergeant Warren, was a crude man who had no regard for how to treat a woman and tried to force himself on the pretty red-haired Southern woman they had just met while looking for the spy.  Judy had caught Ben's attention and he soon found himself protecting her from his own sergeant.  He helped her and her mother escape to a safe place but ended up getting shot in the process.  He eventually gets caught by the Confederates at Baylor’s Farm where he realizes he has fallen in love with Judy.  If you've read Wellington Grove and A Wellington Christmas, then you’re already acquainted with Ben.

Excerpt
from The Great and the Small: The
Market

A
loud crash boomed from the fish stalls, making them both jump.
A
huge man wearing rubber boots and a plastic apron came charging down the aisle.
“You filthy piece of… I’m gonna get you!” He was focused on something on the
ground and didn’t seem to notice that he was charging straight at them.
Ananda’s
father braced himself, toothpick though he was, in front of her. But the
fishmonger barrelled past, following a streak of white and grey. A mouse! The
man raised his boot, slammed it down on the mouse.
Ananda
gasped. So did others in the crowd. The mouse squirmed in pain, its back paw
crushed. A dark splotch of blood bloomed on the pavement.
The
man lifted his boot again.
Everything
seemed to slow down for Ananda. “Stop!” she roared. She pushed by her dad and
jumped between the man and the mouse. Blood pounded in her ears and her heart
thrummed. She held up her hands to block him and shouted, “Leave it the Hell
alone!”
The
man stumbled backward, tripping over his own enormous boot. He pulled himself
up to his full height and glowered down at her. His face was as red as boiled
lobster, and a sheen of sweat glistened on his fat upper lip and quivering
jowls. He sneered.
“What’s
your problem, you stupid kid?” he snarled.
Ananda
was too pumped with adrenaline to be cowed by this mastodon. She rose to her
full five-foot-one-inch height and glared up at the giant. “I’m not the
troublemaker here, you bloody, murderous jerk! What gives you the right to hurt
an innocent animal?”
“Are
you crazy?” the guy sputtered.
Ananda
wanted to sink her fist into his fat ham of a face. “No, you’re crazy! Torturing an innocent mouse who hasn’t done you any
harm—ouch!” She was suddenly yanked to one side.
Her
skinny father, with his thick glasses and mop of dark brown hair, stepped
forward, putting himself between her and the fish-selling Goliath. Tom pushed
his glasses up his nose. “Let’s all just calm down…”
Giant
Fish-Guy began ranting, waving his meaty hands, drops of sweat flying off him
like a dog shaking itself after a dip in the pond. Tom’s voice began to rise.
Leaving
her dad to it, Ananda swooped around and crouched on the ground before the
mouse. It was white with grey markings. It looked like it had a little cape. It
was still moving, its long, pink tail flickering like a groggy snake.
“Come
on, little guy,” whispered Ananda. “You’ve got to get up now.”
The
small creature seemed to know it had been given a reprieve. It picked itself
up, slowly peeled its crushed
back
paw from the pavement, gave itself a small shake, and lolloped
away, holding its crushed paw to its belly. It made it past the gargoyle
statue. It had just leaped onto the column when Fish-Guy caught sight of it. He
swore and lumbered after it.
“Leave
it alone!” screamed Ananda. She went to run
after him but was stopped by an iron grip on her arm. “Stop him, somebody!” she
shrieked.
By
now, the entire market had stopped to gawk. The mouse was halfway up the
column. Cursing, Fish-Guy hopped on one foot and ripped off a boot. He threw
it. The boot bounced off the column.
The
mouse kept climbing.
Fish-Guy
threw the other boot. Missed!
Ananda
cheered as the mouse slid over the rooftop. “Yes! The mouse got away!” She
jumped up and down, clapping, and swung around. Dozens of people were staring,
jaws flapped open. She froze. In the crowd she saw one of the guys from her
school. He looked like Ed the Hyena from The
Lion King
. His
mouth was in perma-sneer mode, and his head thrust forward on his neck like
someone was leading him by his pimply nostrils. He shook his head at her.
“Loser,” he mouthed, and laughed. She’d seen his type a million times. A coward
until he smelled blood. There was no way he was going to bully her.
Although
prickling sweat had broken out all over her body, Ananda thrust out her chin.
She smiled—a bright, fake mask. “Good!” she called to the crowd. “The mouse is
safe. All’s well that ends well, right?” She curled her mouth into a sarcastic grin and stared down the hyena.

Interview with A.T. Balsara

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
It depends on the story. For my newest book, the young adult novel The Great & the Small, the seed of the story was planted a long time ago. I had gone through a concentration camp museum in Dachau when I was 10, and from that time on, the biggest question in my life was how does such evil happen. The Great & the Small is my attempt, as a writer and as a human being, to work through that question. Not all my books have such tumultuous beginnings. My picture book series, Greenbeard the Pirate Pig, about a little green-bearded guinea pig pirate, was inspired by my two guinea pigs, Piggie and Petunia. They would gobble down lettuce so fast that their little beards streamed with green juice.

How did you do research for your book?
I had to do a lot of research for The Great & the Small, as it is about a totalitarian regime in a rat colony that has sworn to destroy humanity using the bubonic plague. I read about Stalin, about the “Great Mortality” of the 1300’s, and lots of books about rats. I also went to the famous farmer’s market (which shall remain nameless so I don’t get sued!) where The Great & the Small is set and took lots of photos. I must have looked a little eccentric, because as the tourists were snapping photos of the sights, I was taking photos of the fish guts under the stalls. I was looking for anything that would be a rat’s-eye view of the world to use for reference photos, as I was going to illustrate the book. The best part of my research, though, was getting my little rattie. Frodo was my guide in my quest in writing this story. And yes, I am a Lord of the Rings nerd.

Do you have another profession besides writing?
I am lucky in that my husband supports what I do. If I were on my own I would definitely need a “day job” as writing is a tough way to make a living. For many years, I was a stay-at-home mom and juggled writing and illustrating when I found time. Now I have more time to write/illustrate, but I also take care of the garden, the house, the animals (two cats and two dogs) and my hives of honey bees.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I am fascinated by history, but I wouldn’t want to live in any other time than right now. Women were treated terribly for 99% of human history, and in many parts of the world they still are. People of colour were treated as slaves and are still treated as second-class, but more and more people are waking up to the fact that we are one human family. Even though things seem to be such a mess, and the environment is at a tipping point, I truly believe that humanity will eventually realize that we are one people. As humans, we are often not open to change until we have to change. At this point in our collective life, we have to change now, and work together, or we won’t survive. As difficult as it is to see the level of suffering in the world, I believe we will come through this as a peaceful, unified, global society. So I’m grateful to be living right here and now.

 What is your next project?
I have a picture book called The Nightingale’s Song which I am writing and illustrating which shares the message of unity in diversity, and am finishing up the illustrations for that. I’m also the illustrator for the picture book series, Happy the Pocket Mouse, and will be starting Book 5 in December. I have another book project which I am excited about—I’m starting research on a book about modern-day slavery in India, told from the perspective of a child. I had taken an online course last year on modern-day slavery through the University of Nottingham and Future Learn, and it boggled my mind how many slaves there still are in the world. Things are better now than they’ve ever been, in terms of human rights, but there’s still a long way to go.

I Knocked Him Out by Jessica Frances blitz

I Knocked Him Out
Jessica Frances
(Love at First Crime, #2)
Publication date: October 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
She knocked him out, so he knocked down her walls…
He has irritated me ever since we were kids.

He is overprotective.

Controlling.

A complete jerk.

So, I knocked him out.

It was an accident.

I felt terrible … mostly.

It changed things between us.

Life for us both got more complicated.

Add in a stalker who has decided to take an interest in me,

And suddenly our worlds are turned upside-down.

Can things really change between us so fast?

Or are we just making a bigger mess than what we started with?

I think that hit to the head might have knocked things loose for both of us.

Because, from the moment I knocked him out, we saw each other differently.

As some people say, there is nothing quite like love at first … crime.
EXCERPT:
“You hit me!” he accuses.
“You sneaked up on me!” I snap back.
This is always the way between Declan and me, ever since we were kids. He never speaks to me normally or casually. He’s always angry, aggravated, or annoyed. The three As.
“I was calling your name; you just weren’t paying attention.” He says this like I’m the only person in the world to ever be lost in my thoughts.
“Well then, good call on coming up close to me while I was punching the shit out of this stupid bag,” I retort, already sensing any warm feelings that had started to work their way up from a guilty conscience disappearing.
“God, you’re annoying.” He shakes his head now, wiping his wet face with his T-shirt. My eyes betray me by peeking at Declan’s toned abs.

Stupid, smoking hot jerk.
“Ditto. Now, is there a reason you’re annoying me right now? Or are you just trying to fill your quota for the day and we’re a little behind?” I ask, shaking my head to get myself back in the game. Getting distracted while Declan is in one of these moods just means more insults with me looking like a fish out of water in response.
“I just wanted to tell you that you’re going to be late if you don’t leave soon.”
“Is that all?” I roll my eyes at him, something I’m aware annoys him to extremes. “I do know how to read a clock, you know.”
He narrows his eyes on me. Their blue color might be an exact match for a sunny, blue sky, yet I only ever see storm clouds directed at me.

The Last Crusader Kingdom by Helena P. Schrader Blitz

Historical Fiction
Date Published: August 2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

An armed insurrection, a military occupation, and the dawn of a dynasty....

John d'Ibelin, son of the legendary Balian, will one day defy the most powerful monarch on earth. But first he must survive his apprenticeship as squire to man determined to build a kingdom on an island ravaged by rebellion. The Greek insurgents have already driven the Knights Templar from the island, and now stand poised to destroy Richard the Lionheart's legacy to the Holy Land: the crusader foothold on the island of Cyprus.

Excerpt

The men who forced their way inside were dressed in chainmail from head to toe. They wore scull-cap helmets with heavy nose guards. Most terrifying of all, they wore surcoats with the arms of Jerusalem on them: they were the king’s men.
“Where’s Lord Aimery?” One of them barked at the servants.
“I’m here!” Aimery called from the floor above. Without hesitation the four armored men pushed past the frightened servants to the stairs at the back of the vaulted room. They pounded up to the next floor, and as they emerged out of the stairway, they found the Constable of Jerusalem hastily donning his surcoat while a young squire held his sword ready for him to take.
“Hold that, boy!” One of the king’s men shouted, springing to put himself between the squire and the constable. He pushed the squire backwards, pinned him against the wall, and wrenched the sword out of his hands with little trouble.
Meanwhile, the sergeant turned his attention to the Constable himself. “My lord, you are under arrest for high treason! Either you come with us willingly, or, we have orders to take you by force.”
Aimery de Lusignan was a handsome man in his early fifties. His shoulder-length, blond hair was somewhat disheveled and his face was sprouting the beginnings of a beard, but he had managed to pull on braies, hose and a gambeson over his nightshirt. He stood with his shoulders squared and his head held high. “The charges are false and slanderous!” he told the sergeant firmly. “I will defend myself before the High Court.”
“Maybe. For now you’re coming with us!” The sergeant answered bluntly, ominously lowering his hand to his hilt.
“Where are you taking me?” The Constable asked gruffly.
“To the royal dungeon, where all traitors are held! Now, are you coming willingly or must I use force?”
“Will you at least allow me to put on boots?” The Constable asked back in a voice that was edged with bitterness.
“No tricks!” the sergeant warned, drawing his sword for emphasis before nodding to Lord Aimery to get on with it.
The Constable walked across the room to where his knee-high boots were standing, the soft upper parts flopped over on their sides. He took the suede boots, sat on the nearest chest, and pulled them on one at a time. Then he stood and surveyed the room briefly; whether he was looking for a chance to escape or simply taking a last leave was unclear. The king’s men blocked the door, their swords drawn. They not only ensured he was trapped, they also kept his wife out. He could hear her anxious voice in the hall demanding an explanation. His squire was pinned against the far wall, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief.
“John, get word to your father of what has happened,” the Constable ordered the youth before walking briskly toward the men sent to arrest him. He allowed them to close around him as he passed out of the door. They clattered down the stairs and out into the street, leaving John and Lady Eschiva standing on the upstairs landing in horrified paralysis.
“Treason?” Lady Eschiva asked the squire. “Did I hear correctly? Champagne has arrested my lord husband for treason? But that’s not possible!” she protested at once.
“I’ve got to get word to my father at once!” John answered, his voice breaking with tension as the situation threatened to overwhelm him; he would not turn fourteen for another month.
“Mommy! Mommy! What are they going to do with Daddy?” It was the high pitched voice of eight-year-old Burgundia. Ten-year-old Guy pushed past her, protesting, “They can’t arrest, Daddy! He’s the Constable!”
Eschiva turned toward her children, but then stopped to look over her shoulder to her husband’s squire. “Yes, John, go to your father at once! If Isabella let this happen, he’s the only one who might be able to help us now!”

My Review:
This was a pretty cool book. I enjoyed the different stories. Some took a whole lot of imigination to come up with. Some needed more to the story and some should be turned into full books.
I really enjoyed the story Extraordinary by Angela Brown. I would love to read a full book on this story. In the story Angelique's whole life about to changing. She just hit puberty and begins to "Phase". This means she is able to merge through doors, she can turn into a puddle of water and more. She also learns about her birth and the mother who died when she was born.  When a tornado takes her house and her father figure she phases in front of a person she though of as a brother, he does not understand and tells her to leave. Now she is on her own after loosing everything and learning the secrets of her life.
Another story that was pretty good but really need a bit more background was The Folding Point by Cherie
Reich. In the story Aimee and her brother Xavier are Pager Magic's. They can fold paper into birds then write some magic words on the paper and it will fly like a real bird. They can also form other things like weapons.  In the story Aimee's mom has been arrested for being a Paper Magic.  Paper Magic has been banned.  A group of other paper magic's are going to try and break all the arrested paper magic's out of jail.
I did not find one bad story in the book. Each is about a different subject. This book is really not ghosts and goblins but it was a great Halloween read.
