About Tmonique Stephens

I wrote my first novel about a reporter and a hockey player after the U.S. hockey team won gold in the 1980 Olympics. I love writing flawed characters who reflect the emotional baggage we all carry. I write complicated stories for complicated people. Paranormal romances and fantasy novels are my favorite genre. I'll read anything about fairies, demons, or angels, but I also enjoy Stephen King and Preston and Childs.
I'm hooked on Lucifer, The Backlist, The Strain, Vikings, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and BlindSpot. I can't get enough of these shows!
I was born in St. Thomas USVI, but grew up in The Bronx, New York one mile from Yankee Stadium. I love SyFy, the History channels, and Asian cuisine. But my heart and stomach longs for anything from the Caribbean.

Excerpt 3 (675 words)

when
you’re hot

“DO THE
TOES still hurt?”
“Not
really.” Dee Zu looks down at her naked body, smeared with dried mud from the
cave, scratched by thorns, burned by satrays, bruised by who knows what. “But
I’m filthy. I’ve never been this dirty.”
Cisco
sits beside her, also naked, also the victim of violent encounters with his
world. He’s enthralled by a symphony of odors and scents, some of them Dee
Zu’s. What he smells now bears scant resemblance to what he was given in his
encounters with this woman in GR Worlds. “Generated realities can appear realer
than real,” Leary once told him, back in his holotank in the Mall. “But real
reality still offers something the qubits don’t.” And he’d been right.
He misses
Leary. That’s the Leary he spoke to in Aeolia not many hours before, the same
one, more or less, who died in Living End a few hours before that. Cisco
remains amazed at all that has happened since he fled the disintegration of
Eastern Seaboard, USA (ESUSA) Mall. Could that have been only two days ago?
Dee Zu is
charming when she wrinkles her nose. “You stink,” she tells him.
Keeping
an eye on their surrounds, Cisco is engaged in an internal confab, a
Lode-assisted orientation. Bacterial wastes, he learns, are responsible for
most of the smells. His WalkAbout also conveys grounds for surprise that he and
Dee Zu are so thoroughly colonized by bacteria this soon after escaping the
Mall.
It’s
surprising that any bacteria survived the PlagueBot. For sure, few survived
internal mall operations management, where all but the most essential bio and
machine microorganisms were anathema. Admit the wrong bio-engineered or mutant
virus, or a feral nanobot self-replicator, and it would have quickly sterilized
the malls, the last human enclaves on Earth, of higher biological life. But
never mind all the defenses, all MOM’s neurotically careful management. Now the
malls, both ESUSA and ESSEA, maybe the last of them, lie breached and ruined.
Yeah, well.
Dee Zu
conducts a nuzzling investigation into local species of Cisco stink. He finds
this at once embarrassing and, despite residual shock from what they’ve just
witnessed, nice.
Here they
are, both of them still alive and pretty well here in this anomalous patch of
life on the other side of the planet from their former home. However alien this
still-smoldering oasis with its tame PlagueBot and all its subterranean
installations lying wrecked beneath them, what lies beyond the border, back the
way they came yesterday, looks worse still. Much worse. It could be another
planet, or a GR World gone bad — the type of nightmare, in fact, that both
Cisco and Dee Zu, in their capacity as Worlds UnLtd test pilots, were trained
to identify and, where possible, fix.
*
Dee Zu
also stinks, much of it a good stink. Cisco inhales the heady perfume and feels
himself invaded with power.
“Maybe
you should put that away for now.” Dee Zu points and little Cisco points back.
“Come
on,” Big Cisco gives her his most boyish grin. “Let’s do it. Wet sex.”
Dee Zu is
Dee Zu, after all, and she straddles him without further ado. This isn’t
entirely reckless, mind you, since they do it sitting up so Cisco can watch
behind her while she watches behind him. It doesn’t last long, but it’s good.
It has an urgency and depth he never experienced when they did it in the
Worlds, no matter how imaginatively. Maybe the threat of imminent death, so
recently demonstrated, has something to do with the way things go.
*
They sit
there a bit longer, Dee Zu’s legs still locked behind Cisco. He breathes deep
of her, buries his face in her hair. Meanwhile she scents this strange world,
still burning in patches, smelling of charred wood and flesh and things. She
feels good. At the same time she continues to watch.
And this
world, their world now, watches back. Though it’s anything but clear who or
what might be watching. Or from where.

How Real Is a Nuclear Terror Attack - Barry Oberholzer

Jack Bauer from 24 spent numerous episodes chasing down nuclear terrorists. Red from Blacklist chased down nuclear terrorist trying to get their hands on a tactical nuclear weapon and NCIS: Los Angeles regularly has nuclear terror as a plot. But how real is the threat of a nuclear terror strike outside of Hollywood?
As the international nuclear summit ended in Washington last week, the big topic of discussion was how to stop terrorist groups like ISIS getting their hands on nuclear material. The toxic combination ISIS has of thousands of foreign fighters, some which are well educated, combined with the vast amount of cash they have available, makes this threat very real, even closer than some people may think.
EMPW Threat/Nuclear Missile Strike
An electromagnetic pulse weapon (EMPW) is a nuclear weapon that detonates in the atmosphere which will trigger a series of electromagnetic pulses and fry everything electronic. It will darken everything and take us back to the dark ages. No cell reception, no wifi, no stock exchange, nothing. However, this will require access to either an intercontinental ballistic missile or a platform to launch such a missile from. For a terrorist group to get access to this, they must either steal it from a very well guarded facility or make a deal with a rogue nation like North Korea. Although this is a plausible scenario, it is probably highly unlikely. The same goes for a nuclear missile strike, highly unlikely that a terror group will be able to pull this off without any detection.
The Dirty Bomb
A dirty bomb is not a suicide vest which fell into the mud.
It is in fact where radioactive material is obtained from either a nuclear or medical facility through a radicalised or blackmailed employee. The terror group then adds this material to conventional explosives, like the 4kg of TNT found in a ISIS apartment and once detonated will radioactively contaminate at least 10 square miles of city infrastructure and make it uninhabitable for years.
These materials can also be acquired through the black market and ISIS has sufficient funding to buy enough material to make such a dirty bomb. This scenario is much more likely and perhaps have already been planned.
The fear of a nuclear terror attack however is already a victory for the terrorists. Such an attack will be unprecedented and will create worldwide havoc.
Like the 9/11 attacks, a nuclear terror attack will change the world. Forever.
In order to prevent that the heart of a modern city becomes a ghost town after a nuclear attack, it is imperative that further steps needs to be taken to secure access to these materials in areas like South East Asia and Africa, where security of such materials, are not always as strict as it should be, which makes it more accessible and brings the terrorist groups one step closer to the ultimate attack.

NBTM: Saving Nary by Carol DeMent

Saving Nary
by Carol DeMent

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fictional
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A Finalist in the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, Saving Nary explores the losses, loyalties and secrets held within families broken by war and genocide. This compelling novel presents a palette of unique characters who struggle to make sense of the events that led them to America, even as they ponder the bewildering culture and lifestyle of their new homeland.

Refugee Khath Sophal lost everything when the Khmer Rouge swept into power in Cambodia: his livelihood gone, his family dead or missing; his sanity barely intact from the brutality he has been forced to witness.

Now resettled in the Pacific Northwest, Khath treads a narrow path between the horrors of his past and the uncertainties of the present. His nights are filled with twisted dreams of torture and death. By day he must guard constantly against the flashbacks triggered by the simple acts of daily living, made strange in a culture he does not understand.

Then Khath meets Nary, a mysterious and troubled Cambodian girl whose presence is both an aching reminder of the daughters he has lost, and living proof that his girls, too, could still be alive. Nary’s mother Phally, however, is another matter. A terrible suspicion grows in Khath’s mind that Phally is not who or what she claims to be. A split develops in the community between those who believe Phally and those who believe Khath. And those, it seems, who don’t really care who is right but just want to stir up trouble for their own personal gain.

Khath’s search for the truth leads him to the brink of the brutality he so despises in the Khmer Rouge. His struggle to wrest a confession from Phally ultimately forces him to face his own past and unravel the mystery of his missing daughters.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
“Go back to Cambodia?” Pra Chhay stared at Khath with puzzled eyes.
Khath nodded. “What choice do we have, brother?” he said. “Our people are being forced back across the border into the arms of the Khmer Rouge. My daughters will have no chance now to get into Khao I Dang. We must go back to continue our search for them.”
Pra Chhay, dressed in saffron monk’s robes and cracked rubber sandals, stood framed by the setting sun outside the open doorway of the bamboo and thatch shelter he shared with Khath and five other families. The odor of too many human bodies crowded into a small living space hung heavy in the air spilling across the threshold.
The rectangular shelter was partitioned by side walls into six open-faced cubicles, three to a side, facing a center corridor running the length of the shelter. There was no privacy other than what could be attained by turning one’s back to the open side of one’s cubicle or crawling inside a mosquito net hung over the thin kapok sleeping mattresses on the floor. The shelter’s only doors were located at each end of the central corridor, opening directly to the outside.
With no way to secure themselves or their meagre belongings, the refugees lived in helpless fear of night visits by bored Thai soldiers, whose transgressions ranged from theft to rape. Pra Chhay and Khath occupied an end cubicle by the door, making them even more vulnerable to unwanted attention from the soldiers, but because of Pra Chhay’s position as a monk, they were usually left alone.
As Pra Chhay slipped his calloused feet out of his sandals, stepping barefoot into the corridor, a gentle breeze puffed out the hem of his robes and blew camp dust into the shelter.
Khath motioned to Pra Chhay to shut the door. Careful not to waste a drop of the day’s ration of precious water, he barely moistened the corner of a rag and ran it over random surfaces in their cubicle that might attract and harbor dust: the wooden altar in the corner, the cracks and edges of the bamboo slats that formed the walls of the hut, the straw mats that covered the floor. A squat wooden bench, left behind by the prior resident, completed the amenities of the living space.
Pra Chhay took off his outer layer of robes and hung them on a sliver of bamboo pulled out from the wall to serve as a peg for clothing. Turning, he watched Khath rub his cloth over the wooden bench, back and forth, back and forth, harder and harder, the knuckles gripping the cloth turning white with effort.
“Khath, stop it. You will polish our only seat away to nothing,” Pra Chhay said. “Tell me exactly what you heard today that makes you say we must return to Cambodia.” The monk settled himself comfortably on the floor.
With an effort, Khath slowed his rubbing and carefully folded the rag and laid it on his lap. His eyes followed the tiny particles now dancing in the single ray of golden sun that slipped through the crack between the outer door and its frame. He laced his fingers tightly together to stop their reaching for the rag as, mesmerized, he watched the motes settle onto the areas he had just cleaned. The sight of dust on surfaces where it ought not to be was still intolerable to Khath, though nearly six years had passed since his obsession was born on the day the Khmer Rouge killed his wife and son.
“Silence that boy,” the soldier had said to his wife on that awful day. Khieu gathered their son Bunchan into her arms, but how is one to soothe a toddler who cries from hunger when there is no food? Khath, Khieu and their three children had been walking for three days in the heat and humidity, shoulder to shoulder with thousands of other refugees inching their way out of Phnom Penh by order of the Khmer Rouge. Already hunger, thirst and exhaustion had thinned their ranks: the elderly and the ill simply dropped along the sides of the road, patiently awaiting the mercy of death.
Given only minutes to prepare for their exodus, the food Khath and his family carried was gone in a day. After that, they bought, scavenged and bartered for whatever nourishment they could find along the way. Now, they stood next in line before a table of grim-faced cadres in the simple uniform of the Khmer Rouge: black cotton shirts and pants with kramas, red-checkered scarves, wound around their heads or necks. The cadres were checking identity papers and quizzing the refugees about their prior occupations.
Bunchan’s incessant crying enraged the soldier. “Silence him or I will,” he warned Khieu.
