Lockdown

GENRE:   Horror/Sci Fi

BLURB:

Leah Watton’s practical joke has spiralled way out of control—all to impress a crush…

With a prank online video, Leah hopes to catch the attention of Jake Colton, a cute, blond-haired, blue-eyed co-worker she’s had a crush on for months. But instead of sending it to Jake, she manages to forward the clip to her boss—who buys every gory second.

When mass panic ensues, Leah learns the video is more than a staged act…

The government is calling the virus AM13. As the outbreak spreads, citizens are forced to stay indoors while they assess the gravity of the illness. Most people are quarantined in their homes, but Leah, Jake, and Leah’s best friend Michelle are some of the unlucky few who are stuck at work when the Lockdown occurs.

That’s where she first encounters one of the infected…

Aside from a contaminated woman devouring one of her co-workers, Leah has another problem. Does she do as she’s ordered and stay at work? Or should she disobey government orders and break free to reunite with her family?

She can’t go it alone—after all, Leah has none of the skills needed to survive—but with Michelle and Jake by her side, not even a contagious virus and a sea of the dead can keep her from…

Breaking out of the Lockdown…

Excerpt Two:

He’s disgusting. I’ve never seen one this close before, heading towards me with such vigour. I’ve always done my best to avert my eyes from the infected, but now time seems to freeze as I can’t drag my gaze away. What I thought was him shuffling, was actually him dragging his broken, bloodied leg behind him. This wound is so deep I can see bone poking through. I can’t help but retch.

The bite on his shoulder is absolutely huge and rancid—all blackened from the infection. His arm is hanging down by his side, completely useless. He’ll never be able to move that again, no matter what happens. His face is also in a terrible state. His skin is a deep grey, much murkier than the others I’ve seen. He must have been infected for a very long time. The bags under his eyes droop incredibly low, causing his face to look deformed. The blood running down his skin, staining all his clothes, looks really old. Scratch marks cover his torso; he looks as if he’s been brutally beaten in some awful fight. I would never have thought someone could survive these injuries, they’re just so severe. People have died over much less, and yet here he is, still moving towards us, baring his teeth, ready and waiting to eat.

Interview with Samie Sands

  1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

My favorite part of  Lockdown is actually the main character, Leah. Most of the zombie apocalypse books that I’ve read in the past feature very capable main characters. It made me wonder what would happen with an ordinary person trying to survive, someone without any particular talents to help her live through such horror. Leah is a normal, girl next door type without any skills to survive. Sometimes she's flawed and she doesn’t always make the right choice, but that makes her more realistic. Not everyone likes her, but I  no one can be liked by everyone!

  1. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

If I could spend time with anyone from the book it would be Leah’s best friend, Michelle. She’s fun loving, confident, and she has better instincts than Leah.

  1. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Recently I read The Last Days Of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp and that was amazing. I would love to write something as clever and gripping as that. The main character is unlikable, but in a very charming way, and the plot is incredible.

  1. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

The characters aren’t necessarily based off anyone I know, but the traits of them are. I think about myself or the people in my life when I consider the way my characters react to certain things so hopefully the way that they behave is more believable, if not always the right decision.

  1. What made you want to become a writer?

With Lockdown, I wrote the book I wanted to read. I didn’t think about doing it professionally, I simply enjoyed doing it. I didn’t even think anything would come of it when I sent the manuscript off to get published but when it did it inspired me to write more. Now, I absolutely love it!

Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Ultimate Illustrated History by Richie Unterberger

If you like Bob Marley you will love this book. The books starts with Bob's birth and goes up past his death in 1981. Death did not slow Bob Marley down in his quest to make Reggae known around the world. His band mates the Wailers are still going strong today and carrying on his legacy.

The books takes you through an illustrated tour of all things Bob Marley. His life, his death, and his music. I was actually fascinated with not only the pictures but also the written parts of this book. I thought I knew a lot about Bob Marley before reading this book to find out I actually knew very little. I knew basic facts before and honestly very few. After reading this book Not only do I know more about Bob Marley but I also understand him more.

I have always enjoyed Bob Marley's music. This book is the perfect edition to the albums I have of Bob's. Great book for any library or music collection.

My Polaroid Selfies: 1981 Book 1 by Melinda Camber Porter

My Polaroid Selfies is book 1 of a series of 3 books of photos taken by Melinda Camber Porter of herself.  She took roughly 1 picture of herself a week for 3 years. She was into selfies before selfies was even a thing. This photo's were taken in the early 80's with a Polaroid Camera.

Melinda became enamored with the Polaroid Camera and being able to get almost instant feedback from the pictures she took. This was new thing back in the 80's. She basically wanted to see if you could read her thoughts from the expressions on her face in each picture.

Also in the book you get the behind the scenes story of the Polaroid Camera. The camera took  Edwin Land over 50 years to produce and market the cameras. Before dying a slow death with the invention of digital camera's. Now with this book it brings back memories of these amazing camera's.

Melinda passed away in 2008 but has left her work in art, journalism, and literature, and this is book 1 of the publisher's way of sharing with us.

In Journey's End, we write about death, dying, and end of life issues. We attempt to define and describe these real-life circumstances, and we discuss ways to proactively deal with them. Multiple personal and professional perspectives provide valuable insights.

What is dying like for dying persons, for loved ones, and for those who lend support in the process? Each experience will have unique qualities. Everyone dies in his own way, on his own schedule. While we explore the dying process, we make no assumptions about how any particular death will unfold.

Grief and bereavement support, training tools, and educational resources are included.
