Karina’s
Silver Shoes
Denise
Marques Leitao

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Publisher: Sparkly Wave

Date of Publication: September
18th, 2017

ISBN:  9781775063711
ASIN: B074T8RFWX

Tagline: She’s got the fate of a
kingdom in her hands—or rather, in her shoes.

Book Description:

When two princesses ask Karina to
go to Whyland, a kingdom in a parallel dimension, to destroy her fascinating
and potentially evil silver shoes, of course Karina accepts. Who would refuse a
free trip to an alternate world?

Advised by a wise master and threatened
by a beautiful stepmother, Karina goes on a journey with a princess to defeat a
powerful witch. But Whyland is nothing like she expected. Karina finds herself
stuck in a kingdom she doesn’t understand, with no clue on who to trust. Before
saving anyone, she’d better save herself—if she figures out how.

From
Brazilian / Canadian writer Denise Marques Leitao comes Karina’s Silver Shoes,
a teen parody of fantasy and fairy-tale tropes with many female characters,
friendships between girls and women, and some subtle romance.

If
you like to read about strong girls and women, you’ve found your book.

They seemed to
have forgotten Karina’s question, so she had to repeat it, “And… where are we
going?”
“Of course. You haven’t been told.” Odell
turned to Karina. “Those shoes were made by Lylah, and only her magic can destroy
them. You’ll have to go to her dwelling.”
“You mean the
really scary witch who seems really nice? The one who can’t have the shoes?”
“Yes,” Odell replied, a weird smile on his
face. “But all you’ll have to do is throw the shoes in her fire, and that can
be done very quickly.”
Karina thought
she had heard something like that somewhere. “Fire? You mean like the crater of
an active volcano in her land?”
Odell looked
puzzled. “That would be very hot—and dangerous. But no, it’s nothing like that,
it’s her fireplace. That’s where her magic is.”
Karina almost
face palmed herself. Of course a volcano crater would be incredibly hot. Now
where was she getting those ideas? The real plan sounded simpler. So Karina
would have to walk for days, break into a house, then destroy her precious
shoes. Now, why was she doing this again? Oh, wait, she was in a free trip to
an alternate world. And she liked walking.

Blog post 2 T’s Stuff

I would like to write about my inspiration for Karina’s Silver Shoes. Yes, it was an exercise in adaptation. I took the shoes from The Wizard of Oz and put them in a continuation, the way Lord of the Rings is to The Hobbit. But there’s something ridiculous about shoes as these evil magical objects, and I started to play with the idea.
Karina’s Silver Shoes ended up as a very playful novel, one that doesn’t take itself or its protagonist seriously. One other thing that happened, is that, as I wrote the story, I think it deviated from the adaptation. Of course nothing prevents the silver shoes from being the same ones as seen in The Wizard of Oz, but then, nothing says they are the same. And the story certainly doesn’t get serious like LOTR.
A lot of the idea was to question what can be understood and what can’t be understood, and since we see everything from Karina’s point of view, and she doesn’t know a lot, we don’t get to know certain details about Whyland. But that’s sort of the point. How much does Karina know? How much can she know? And can she make decisions without so much vital information? Those were points that I wanted to question with the novel.

Guest Post
Interview with Sian, male character present in one of the last chapters in Karina’s Silver Shoes:

Denise: Do you realize you were supposed to be a minor character?
Sian: Laughs. Well, I do make an impression everywhere I go, so, if my part got bigger, well, that’s expected.
Denise: What can you say about your role in Karina’s Silver Shoes?
Sian: I guess nothing, unless I’m going to spoil people. Do you want me to spoil people?
Denise: Are you a villain?
Sian: Uhm. Let me think while I twirl my moustache. Fine, I don’t have a moustache, and I don’t want one. I think I’m a nice guy. Why would you consider me a villain?
Denise: We’ll have to disagree on the definition of nice.
Sian: What about Karina. What’s her definition?
Denise: I think she’s sick of calling people nice. Now wait. Do you want to know her opinion about you?
Sian: Not necessarily. But she’s the protagonist, isn’t she?
Denise: Well, there’s Cayla who’s really important as well. One could argue it’s also her story.
Sian: That brat. Oh goodness.
Denise: Fair enough. Any last word to our readers?
Sian: Keep reading. The best part is when I come in.
Denise: I disagree.
Sian: Why are you interviewing me then?
Denise: I thought you had a nice personality, the interview would be fun, and there wouldn’t be any spoilers.

Sian: There you have it, then.

Author Bio
Melinda Gail resides in Canton, Georgia with her three daughters, husband of over twenty years, and two adorable fur babies.  Surrounded by the north Georgia mountains, the scenery provides for inspirational settings for her novels. Being raised in the south, she brings a little southern flair and tradition to her characters, all the while remembering the adventurous nature of middle grades to young adult age children. With a passion for the extraordinary and imagination, Melinda hopes you enter a world of fantasy as you see life through the eyes of the characters.  C:\Users\Majanka\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.Word\author M. Gail Grant.jpg
Writing has always been her underlying passion in life. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and a minor in Sociology, she felt understanding and studying human behavior on the individual and collective level, would apply to anything and everything chosen to do in life. Identified as being a strong writer for her age at the time, she attended a summer literary writer's camp around age twelve. She flourished and loved every moment of the experience and it has stayed with her throughout adulthood.
The desire to write has always been an integral part of who Melinda is, and about eight months ago she decided it was time. Having always been an avid reader of topics from intense young adult fantasy and thrillers, to light hearted summer romances, she chose juvenile to young adult ages for her book. In middle school summers, she would stay up to the wee hours of the morning reading because she just couldn’t put the book down. This basic idea, not being able to put a book down, is the principal she built on while writing Magdalen Gottschalk: The Crooked Trail. It has moments of ease, moments of intensity, moments of humor, striving to offer some of her own personality in her writings. There is a time for sweetness, a time for seriousness, and always a time for kindness and life lessons. Her style isn’t made up. It is simply who she is, on paper.

Times Square by Jana Aston book blitz

Times Square
Jana Aston
Publication date: September 18th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

A STANDALONE romance from New York Times bestselling author Jana Aston

Once in a while right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.

I saw that quote about fairy tales embroidered on a decorative pillow at a home decorating store. Honestly, it pissed me off. Retail propaganda aimed to promote sales when any single girl in the city could tell them they’d sell more if they’d offer Keep Your Pants On, Asshole instead.

But it’s fine. I don’t have room for decorative pillows anyway.

And I don’t have time for distractions.

Which is why I’m ignoring the distraction staring at me right now. The one who looks like he belongs on a billboard campaign. The one with the full lips and the cocky smile. The one refusing to look away even when I give him my best no way scowl.

The one headed in my direction. Right now.

*Times Square was previously published inside the Love In Transit anthology.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks

Author Bio:

Jana Aston likes cats, big coffee cups and books about billionaires who deflower virgins. She wrote her debut novel while fielding customer service calls about electrical bills, and she's ever grateful for the fictional gynecologist in Wrong that readers embraced so much she was able to make working in her pajamas a reality. Jana’s novels have appeared on the NYT, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, some multiple times. She likes multiples.

~*~*~*~*~*~
Excerpt from AMETHYST FLAME:

From Chapter One ~ Vaughn and Emma have found three dead teenage girls in a ditch in Five Bridges.  Emma, a powerful alter witch, must help the girls transition into the next life.

Emma picked her way carefully down the side of the ditch, avoiding chunks of blown-up cement, cactus and a helluvalot of rocks.
Her alter witch senses told her the girls had died within the past two hours. She also knew because of her unique gift that the ghosts were struggling to leave their bodies.
She didn’t know why her witchness leaned toward the deceased. But it had from the time she’d gotten stuck with the spellcaster gene and sentenced to live out her life in Five Bridges. She’d been here seven years and had strived to remain as human as possible by repressing her gifts.
Yet, the sight of the teens below made her wish she’d taken a different course. If she’d spent her nights developing her abilities, instead of ignoring them, maybe she’d be able to take Loghry on. But he was one of the most powerful spellcasters in Elegance and she was an infant by comparison.
Anger bloomed in her chest suddenly as she stared down at the young women. They would never breathe again, never fall in love and marry, never bear children. And all because of a psychopathic wizard who ran a vile sex racket that exploited teens.
Everyone knew who Loghry was, as well as the extent of his operation in Elegance. He didn’t go out in public often, being one of the rare monsters who lived a secluded life. She’d only seen him once herself a year ago. It had been July in the desert and despite the intense summer heat, he’d worn a black scarf around his neck, no doubt to hide the violet markings on his throat. An addiction to any of the flame drugs created a skin discoloration in the shape of flames, especially on the neck, sometimes rising onto the face.
When the pull of the girls’ struggle became an ache in Emma’s chest, she came to a decision. She would embrace what she’d avoided for so long. Simple witch spells or standard police work weren’t effective against Loghry and his kind. She needed power, the kind that came from being a fully engaged alter witch. From this moment forward, she meant to acquire as much power as she could.
She turned to Vaughn, who had made his way into the ditch as well and stood beside her once more. “Loghry is not going to win this time. I won’t let him.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that I’m not going to hold back anymore. I’m going to access who I am in this shitfest of a world. I should have done it years ago. Maybe if I had, these young women would still be alive.”
“Em, please don’t. You’re talking about a level of power the dark witches employ. I’ve felt how much potential you have. Besides, I know what this means to you. I know how hard you’ve tried to hold onto your humanity.”
Emma’s heart heated up as she stared back at Vaughn. Was it possible he felt more for her than she thought? They’d had an amazing round of sex in his townhouse, but they’d also agreed not to repeat anything like it again.
Then, of course, he’d called her and they’d fallen into conversation like they’d always known each other. She’d come to cherish their time on the phone like a lifeline she’d grabbed in high seas. “Thanks for saying as much. It means a lot. All this time, I’ve held back developing my gifts for selfish reasons. I’ve been trying to hold onto something that doesn’t exist anymore, that hasn’t existed from the time I was slipped the alter witch serum. And I owe it to these girls to make a change.
“If I can become a force that will bring Loghry down, then I don’t care about anything else. Not after tonight. I’m done trying to use a rolled-up newspaper to battle a hurricane…”

I hope you found yourself caught up in this excerpt from Chapter One of AMETHYST FLAME. To Read More and For Buy Links…

EXCERPT:

My mother insisted on purchasing two of the largest suitcases possible, Louis Vuitton rolling cases in an easily recognizable and slightly obnoxious shade of bright pink. She’d spent more on my luggage than some people did on a car, and they were heavy. I’d loaded them up with my precious books and far too many pairs of shoes before I left. The porter stumbled, losing his grip on the first suitcase, and nearly fell.

I rushed to help, but someone else beat me to it, a tall, mountain of a man. I stopped in my tracks and stared. I may have been drooling. He was, for lack of a better word, beautiful.

Broad chest. Long legs. Strong, muscular arms. Golden, glowing skin. Chestnut hair flowing in riotous curls around his face and down to his shoulders. Eyes in a warm shade of brown. The edge of a tattoo peeking out from under the sleeve of his shirt.

Something unexpected curled in my chest. Was it…lust? I hadn’t felt it in so long I almost didn’t recognize it. But I wasn’t the only person staring at the bronzed god in from of me.

“Heavens to Betsy,” said Hilary under her breath. “I’ve never seen anything so pretty this close up.”

He was pretty, and he was also pissed off, most likely at the owner of the two enormous and ridiculously heavy pink suitcases. Me.

Vera King by C. S. Warner Blitz

Science Fiction, Mystery
Date Published: 7-30-2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Cold and alone, Jeffrey Kenneth awakens in a bizarre hospital-like room in the basement of an empty house on an isolated island. After a daring escape he is rescued by a passing cargo vessel and brought into the care of security expert Vera King. Mysteries continue to unfold as they search for his captors.

Excerpt

“Excuse me, miss.” A mousey, brown haired nurse in pink floral scrubs looked up from her clipboard and sunk back in speechless horror from the figure towering in front of her. “Sorry to bother you, but I can’t seem to find room number 214.” She shook her head slightly; the corners of her lips nervously twitched upward as she forced a smile, “Of course, sir. It’s right down that hall to the left.” The large man leaned over and used his right (and only) eye to follow along her finger, “Thank you.” Gripping the clipboard tightly to her chest, the nurse gawked at the near seven foot, barrel chested man in black as he strutted away revealing a large, grotesque scar wrapped around the back of his bald head that ended at a missing left ear.
As he reached for the knob of the door labeled ‘214’, it turned on its own and opened; out walked Doctor Ashlan briskly, nearly colliding with the immense individual. “Oh, sorry sir,” the man said, “I didn’t mean to startle you.” Ashlan collected himself and flashed a quick smile, “That’s not a problem at all.” The stranger stepped aside and held out his hand signalling for the doctor to pass. With one last look up and down the daunting gentleman, Ashlan nodded and continued along his way -Must be one of Vera’s men.
Once again the man reached for the knob and entered. Immediately he locked his eye with those of a curly haired woman in a red coat sitting next to an unconscious patient. “Vera King?” he asked. She raised her eyebrow and hesitantly replied, “Yes?” The frightening energy from the new arrival had her instinctively reaching under her jacket.
The man smiled, revealing rows of crooked and missing teeth, then thrust his hand behind his back. To his left, faintly out of view, Martin exited the bathroom just in time to see the silver glint of the gun as the man lifted the back of his shirt.
