Seeds of Malice: A Psychic Visions Novel

Charged with murder. Betrayed by her lover. Shunned by her friends.

After being acquitted of the murder, botanist Fern Geller runs from her past to learn everything she can about poisonous plants. She ends up doing a six month contract at the Garden of Death before finding the answer she's seeking...

When she returns to the same conservatory where she'd worked before, the new boss is missing and several other men are dead. Once again, all eyes turn her way.

FBI agent, London Behring hadn't expected Fern to look like she does now. Ethereal. Gorgeous. Gentle. Why and how had she been a murder suspect? Even more intriguing, how had she been acquitted of all charges? And more mysteriously, she'd come back to the scene of the crime... at the perfect time to fall under suspicion - again.

What magic did she possess to walk away from such crimes? And how can he stay free of her charms... a lure he's finding impossible to resist.

NBtM Tour: Detective Madison Knight Series by Carolyn Arnold

Just Cause
by Carolyn Arnold

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery, Police Procedural
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Series Information
Murder. Investigation. The pursuit of justice. Do you love trying to figure out whodunit? How about investigating alongside police detectives from the crime scene to the forensics lab and everywhere in between? Do you love a strong female lead? Then I invite you to meet Detective Madison Knight as she solves murders with her male partner, utilizing good old-fashioned investigative work aided by modern technology.

This is the perfect book series for fans of Law & Order, CSI, Blue Bloods, Rizzoli & Isles, Women’s Murder Club, and Hawaii Five-O.

Read in any order or follow the series from the beginning: Ties That Bind, Justified, Sacrifice, Found Innocent, Just Cause, Deadly Impulse, In the Line of Duty, Life Sentence (Bonus Prequel).

BLURB:

Sometimes cold cases are deadly…

The past threatens the future and puts Detective Madison Knight’s life in danger.
A cold case pits Madison against the Russian Mafia, but things take a swift turn when the unthinkable happens—a new threat arises and has Madison hunting down an unknown killer.

While trying to make sense of the clues, bodies are piling up, and the brass is hungry for explanations. In addition, Madison must balance all of this while nursing an injury, talking out her emotions with a therapist—a bureaucratic necessity—answering to an eager journalist, and facing an internal affairs investigation.

As the answers come together, Madison narrows in on a possible link between the Russian Mafia and someone within the Stiles PD.

Will she have the courage to confront the person she believes is playing both sides, even though they hold a position of great power?

Things are about to be shaken up, and, for Madison, that means she just might have to let go of the past to embrace her future.

Excerpt Two:

Excerpt from chapter 2 of Just Cause (Detective Madison Knight series)

LIGHTS FLASHING, Terry tore through the city to Madison’s apartment building. He tried her intercom button and imagined her answering. He hoped that he had fabricated nothing into something. But there was no answer.

He pushed random buttons until he got someone. It was an elderly lady, based on her fragile voice.

“Who’s there?”

“Stiles PD. I need access to the building.”

“No way, creep. I know what you want. You have a granny fetish, you sick bastard. Go away or I’ll call the police.”

Terry rolled his eyes, tried another button, and received a more favorable reply. The door buzzed and unlocked for him. He was in.

He pounded on Madison’s apartment door loud enough it could have roused the dead.

The last two words replayed in his head. The dead. What if something happened to Madison and he was too late?

He fell back against the door. The moment he made contact with it, he had his answer.

How could he have been so blind?

It took him thirty minutes to reach the harbor when it should have taken at least forty-five. He saw her Mazda across the street and his heart sank.

He parked the department-issued sedan a block away and hoofed it to her car. He confirmed the plates and called it in. He would need backup.

Meet today’s guest, Carolyn Arnold.

She is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series and has written nearly thirty books. Both her female detective and FBI profiler series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining, leading her to adopt the trademark, POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.

Today, she answers a few questions for us and gives us insight into her life and journey as a mystery author.

Have you ever been on a manhunt or at the scene where a dead body was found?

I took part in my local police department’s Citizen’s Academy. As part of this, I received an inside look at seventeen divisions over a ten-week period. As an added benefit, each student was afforded a ride-along. And mine… Well, I went on the perfect one for a crime writer.

My ride-along actually started out with a manhunt. I experienced the excitement of wanting to find the guy and found myself scrutinizing every male I spotted in the area just to make sure he wasn’t the one we were after. Unfortunately, the search moved to the downtown area from the eastern end of the city where the hunt had begun, and the sergeant signed off the investigation. By the end of my ride-along, about five hours later, the man still hadn’t been found.

After the sergeant left the investigation, he turned to me as he was driving and asked if I had ever seen a dead body. I told him I had at memorials and funerals and then asked why. I soon found out that our next stop involved one.

I figured I’d catch a glimpse of the deceased under a tarp or being wheeled away, but I got far more than that. I received a front-row seat to a death investigation. For hours, the sergeant and I were mere feet away from the body. I witnessed firsthand how it changed color over time, but I also found that I went into detective-mode. The forensic identification unit—essentially CSIs—was called in and arrived with collection kits. The team members gloved up, snapped photographs, took fingerprints from the deceased, and more.

The entire time that I was on scene, I noticed myself going into a detached state—the result of adrenaline. Later that evening, it began to sink in that I had spent hours with a dead body, and I was nauseated. As more time passed, I became weepy as it sank in that the deceased had been a husband, a father, a lover, a friend…a person. That night I dreamed about the man. It wasn’t a nightmare, but I was an officer trying to figure out what had happened to him.

I couldn’t imagine returning to the field the next day and having a similar experience or witnessing something even worse, like a violent murder scene or that of a fatal car accident.

What do members of law enforcement say about your books?

Many testimonials attest that I am pleasing readers in law enforcement. They love that my mysteries are accurate in that regard, and they view that alone as a sign of my respect for them.

Here are a few testimonials that I have received on Eleven (Brandon Fisher FBI series):

I spent thirty-eight years with a major police department in Missouri, fifteen of which were in the homicide section. I also had numerous dealings with the FBI throughout my career, mostly bank robbery, interstate shipment thefts, and a few kidnappings. Eleven kept my interest piqued throughout… Loved it.”
Richard Bartram, Sergeant (retired), St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis, MO

I am a forty-year veteran of police work. All local, no Fed. Eleven was a great read. All the descriptors and nomenclature were spot on.”
Joe Danna, Police Officer, Katy Independent School District Police Department, Katy, TX

Very good! I worked as a police officer for eleven years and with the Federal Bureau of Prisons for twenty-two. I have also dealt with the FBI.”
Richard Smith, Facilities Development Manager (retired), Federal Bureau of Prisons, Central Office, Washington, DC

A great police procedural! … Full of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and a mix of interesting personalities. … Holds your interest to the end!”
Mark Davis, FBI Special Agent (retired), Washington, DC

What did you do before you became a bestselling author?

For a living, I worked in accounts receivable for a few different companies collecting from businesses. Yet, despite working full time, in 2006 I was reunited with writing. I wrote every chance I got—before work, on lunch breaks, after work, on the weekends. I became so focused on writing and the publishing world that hardly a day went by without them being a part of my life, and since the summer of 2014, I’ve been a full-time author.

How do you know so much about what criminals think?

I can’t answer that without incriminating myself… Just kidding.

Everyone has what we call a “dark side.” In writing these books, I suppose you could say I tap into this side of my psyche. Whatever I can scheme up is possible, and I write that which scares and excites me.

When did you know that you had hit the big time with your books?

When I got to say good-bye to my day job! Even before I fully resigned, I had cut back a five-day a week job to four days, then to three. It got to the point, though, that I loathed going in for that many days, and I knew it was time to make the move and become a full-time author. That was in the summer of 2014. Since then, I incorporated my own publishing company in the summer of 2015, and, at the start of 2016, my husband joined me there full time.

Interviewing For Her Lover Blitz

Steamy Romance/Erotica
Date Published: May 2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Sarah wants a lover, but she wants one on her terms.  She doesn’t have time to date and picking a guy up at a bar is not only dangerous but it doesn’t guarantee he’ll let her act out her fantasies.  Then she hears about La Petite Morte Club—a place for willing males and females to meet with rules and contracts so that all parties leave satisfied.

She signs up with the club and starts the process of finding the man who’ll be her lover for six nights.  Six nights of fantasy—his and hers. Six nights of sex and then they’re done.  Simple, uncomplicated and fun, but she doesn’t count on Nick’s ability to make her desire everything he has to offer and more.

Excerpt

Sarah opened the door and walked into the room, trying to stay balanced on these stupid heels.  Men wouldn’t find them so attractive if they had to wear them.  The room was dark except for one light highlighting a small platform.  That was for her.  She stepped up onto the small stage.  The room was silent but they were there, above her, hidden behind the one-way mirrors, watching her, deciding if they wanted to take the next step—to eventually take her.
She stared into the blackness of the room.  It wasn’t huge but its emptiness made it seem vast.  She glanced upward, the light making her squint and she quickly stared back into the darkness.  This was arranged for them to see her.  That was it.  She’d get no glimpse of them yet.  She’d seen their pictures, chosen them but meeting them in person would be different.  A picture couldn’t tell her their smell or the sound of their voices.
She tugged at her dress where it hugged her hips, wishing the questions would start, but there was only silence.  She shifted, the heels already killing her feet.  Ethan hadn’t liked them and if they weren’t going to impress, she might as well take them off.  She moved to the back of the stage, leaned against the wall and removed her shoes.  As she returned to the center of the stage a man spoke, his voice loud and commanding almost echoing throughout the room.
“Don’t stop there.  Take off your dress.”
She bent, placing her shoes on the floor.  That wasn’t part of the deal.  She wasn’t going to undress in front of five men, only one.  Only the one she chose.  She straightened.  “No.”
“What?”  He was surprised and not happy.
“I said no.  That’s not part of the Viewing.”
“I want to see what I’m getting.”
She stared up toward the windows, squinting a little.  She couldn’t tell from where the voice had come.  The speaker system made it sound as if it were coming from God himself.  “And you will if I pick you.”
Another man laughed.
“It’s not funny.  She’s disobedient,” said the man with the loud voice.
“Not always.  I can be obedient.”  These men liked to be in control but sometimes, so did she.
“Will you raise your dress?  Just a little,” asked another voice.

Excerpt:

Prologue

It was a dark
and stormy night. That’s how these things are supposed to start, right? Well,
you can forget that shit. This isn’t your average monster story.
Humans use
monsters to help them understand what is monstrous within them. For instance,
they clutch crosses and run home at sunset, in fear of vampires. They say vamps
are former humans who traded their souls for the immortal power to become
rapists, killers and child-stealers. But the real rapists, killers and
child-stealers are usually waiting for them around their kitchen tables.
They tell
themselves disturbing tales about normal, innocent humans who are bitten by
infected animals and cursed to become nocturnal, amnesiac killers. Then in real
life whatever or whoever they do when they get black-out drunk seems vanilla by
comparison.
Sometimes bad
things happen to good people, is how it goes. Sometimes those good people turn
into something even worse than anything lurking in the shadows. This can’t be
helped. Evil is something that happens to humans, not something that humans do.
Talk about a fairy tale.
The roster of
monsters, as humans understand them, goes on and on. It scintillates as well as
terrifies. It’s a cabinet of curiosities in which to keep those predatory
desires. Human vices become something outside the human realm, as well as
outside the individual ability to control. Convenient, right?
This is how
humans see monsters. But how do monsters see humans? How do monsters see
themselves?
These are
foolish questions, you may say. Monsters aren’t real. They are a human
invention; an entertainment, a release. You wish.
Listen, how
humans understand things is not necessarily the truth. The planet Earth isn’t a
rec-room. Trees aren’t fences. Pigs aren’t bacon. Rats aren’t a Petri dish
meant for studying infections, or testing shampoo. Similarly, monsters are not
archetypes for humans to use as sexual and predatory catharsis.
Pay attention to
this bit—especially if you are human. What I’m telling you is that monsters are
real.
You knew it when
you were a child. You still know it when the lights go off, the moon waxes
full, or someone you fear moves into the house next door.
Like a deer that
catches the scent of a lion, you know it in your bones. Your technology, your
bombs, your medicine don’t matter. You still aren’t the top of the food chain.
There is no top, because life and death are a circle. Ashes, ashes, we all fall
down.
I know this shit
may scare you. That’s a good thing. That fear is the birthplace of stories, and
you need stories. They were meant to protect you. Even if most stories are
wrong.
But hey, even a
broken clock is right twice a day. Your stories have their place.
The boogie man
teaches children to obey their parents. The werewolf teaches parents to keep
those children close and protected. The vampire teaches men and women to keep
on the paths of righteousness, and to always safeguard their souls.
Knowledge is
power. This is how a species endures. Understanding the beasts of the world can
be the key to survival.
But there’s an
important detail to remember. Stories tend to be diluted over time. True
monsters may be missed while you focus on mere prejudice. What was once encoded
with arcane information may now be nothing but soft porn. Especially if you’ve
seen it on cable.
Pay attention to
this part. It’s important. It’s the moral of the story you are about to read.
Understanding
the true nature of vampires can mean the difference between life and death.
Knowledge is power, because no one is off the menu.

Interview with Leslie J Linder
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
A lot of my inspiration when I write horror is the world around me. I work as a victim’s advocate at a domestic violence program and I consult on domestic violence cases at the government child welfare agency in my area. I unfortunately hear lots of sad an infuriating stories about the things human beings are capable of; specifically toward those they claim to love the most. I think that writing in the horror genre is a way for me to filter this negativity out of my system. Moving interpersonal violence, good versus evil, and similar types of issues into a fictional context also seems like a safer and more enjoyable way for both writers and readers to take a look at these very real struggles, but from a bit of a distance. Monster stories in particular seem to have started as morality tales. “Be good or the boogieman will get you.” As someone who thinks a lot about ethics and religion, the genre has always been of interest to me. It’s kind of a kickass way to have that conversation.

How did you do research for your book?
Some of it was deliberate and some was spontaneous. I had a couple of ideas about where vampires come from, and my research into the Sekhmet story (Sekhmet creating vampires) was done online as well as through books in the library of the Temple of the Feminine Divine in Bangor, Maine. I’m an ordained priestess there and get free range of the documents. Then, some things happen organically when you have your head in the world of a story. I was thinking about vampires while writing Revenant: Blood Justice (RBJ), so certain historical occurrences would get my attention and make me think, “what if this was incorporated into a vampire story?”  One example was the story of William Wallace’s great victory at Sterling. There was this extremely odd little nugget I heard somewhere about the English Lord High Treasurer, who the Scots deplored, being skinned alive at this battle. I researched it with books and DVD videos and wherever I could. Then I kind of crafted it into the story. Another example was in the Ripper case. I saw a program about it around the time of Halloween and someone referenced other female victims who may have been Ripper casualties, but had never officially been counted as such. One of them was an Irish immigrant the people in the tenements called “Fairy Fay.” Her body was found impaled with a wooden stake. She was in the time period right around the Ripper, but she wasn’t killed in the same way. Before the police were done collecting evidence, her body went missing from the morgue. Interesting, right? That’s before I added the vampires into the story. Whenever I do research nowadays, I usually start with the internet, and then try to get hold of some primary sources that are sited online. It’s great that so much is available on the web, but you have to at least attempt to verify it from some other sources, I think. It also helps that many old documents have been scanned right into computers and made available through libraries or on the web.

Do you have another profession besides writing?
Yes, I have worked at a domestic violence prevention program since 2001. I earned a Master’s Degree in Theology at Vanderbilt University prior to that. Having decided parish ministry wasn’t for me, I wound up working for the program I am still affiliated with now. Speaking of inspiration for my stories, the stuff I hear at work plays a big part. Writing horror has always been a way for me to vent my frustrations and also to try and be critical and thoughtful about interpersonal violence. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (http://www.ncadv.org/ ) estimates that in America, one woman is fatally shot by a current or former intimate partner every 14 hours. That’s the kind of horror I deal with forty hours a week (more on night shifts), so vampires and zombies and things really don’t seem so bad.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I would go a lot of places! My current release, RBJ, covers backstory in ancient Rome, William Wallace’s Scotland, the plague riddled streets of Medieval Vienna, Jack the Ripper’s London and the jazz fueled decadence of New York in the Roaring Twenties. I’d happily visit them all. That is, as long as I could get back home!

What is your next project?
I’m always working on numerous projects, and they aren’t always in the horror genre. I’m exploring publication of my collection of poems entitled, “Transmigration.” This body of work is about the great cycles of life, death and rebirth. It has a few horror elements in it but I’d call it predominantly “speculative.” One of the poems from that collection, called “Dark Mother (Separation Anxiety)” was published by the Wicked Banshee Press in the Fall 2016 Issue, if anyone likes that sort of thing. My short story, “Catharine Hill,” just came out in the Northern Frights Anthology edited by David Price, through Grinning Skull Press. I’m planning to do more with the storyline in Revenant: Blood Justice, as well.
