Virtual Book Tour: Sick Like That by Norman Green

Sick Like That
by Norman Green

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Mystery (Detective)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

PI Marty Stiles was shot and paralyzed and is now in rehab, trying to decide whether to fight to recover. Meanwhile, his agency is being run by two women: the street-smart and savvy Alessandra Martillo, who’s the muscle, and Sarah Waters, a naïve, single mom, new to the job but who quickly becomes the brains. Though the two women grew up only a few miles from each other in Brooklyn, it might as well have been worlds apart. Now they’re partners, and for all their differences, are committed to their joint venture. When Sarah’s deadbeat ex-husband gets into trouble, Al would rather let him suffer, but she agrees to help Sarah figure out where he is and why another man has ended up dead.

This follow-up to The Last Gig features a tough and edgy, one-of-a-kind heroine—an entirely fresh take on the hardboiled women private investigators who dominate so many crime fiction classics.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Guy in a stocking hat sitting across the aisle stared at her, she stared back until he fi nally looked away. Your own fault, she thought, the dress was the shortest one she owned, but she had her reasons for that. This dress don’t wake Marty up, maybe he’s better off dead after all. Still, it was late, it was dark, and she and Mr. Personality were the only two passengers in the car. One other guy riding between cars, he peered through the dirty door glass, made eye contact with Mr. P, then looked away.
Al felt a flutter somewhere between her stomach and her throat.
So it’s like that.
Well, baby, you ain’t gonna outrun anybody in those high heels . . .
She picked up the camera bag she used in lieu of a purse. Not heavy enough for a weapon, she thought, nothing in there to stab someone with or shoot them or otherwise inflict bodily harm. Shove a lipstick into his eyeball, maybe . . .
Al got up, walked over and stood in front of the center set of exit doors. Mr. Personality got up, too, stood smirking at his reflection in the glass of the rear exit doors.
You could lose the shoes and run, she thought.
Buck eighty for those babies, yo. How long’s it take you to clear a buck eighty to piss away on a pair of shoes?
The train slid into the empty station and stopped with an echoing jerk, and then all the exit doors rattled open simultaneously. Al stepped out, watched as Mr. Personality did the same. She stood, waiting, and he stayed by his doors, too, just in case she decided to try and jump back in when they began to close. Al guessed that Mr. Personality’s associate, the guy who’d been riding between the cars, had gotten off , too, but he had to be a bit farther away and so she focused on the first guy.
The doors closed behind her, the train lurched into motion.
The guy turned to her and smiled. “Hey, chica,” he said. “Where you goin’, baby? All dress up nice like that? You like to party?”
She turned her head to look at him. “Yeah, I do,” she said. “I’m going to a party at my cousin’s house.”
He took a step in her direction, patted his rear pocket unconsciously before spreading his hands out wide. Probably got a knife there, she thought. “You don’t got to go no place, chica. We gonna party right here.”
She heard unhurried footsteps coming from the other direction, but they weren’t close yet. “Don’t you wanna know who my cousin is?”
His smile faded. “So? Who is he?”
“Rocco Parisi,” she said. Parisi, a mobster with a well- earned reputation for violence, was known from one side of Brooklyn to the other.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Norman Green is the author of six crime novels, most recently Sick Like That. Born in Massachusetts, he now lives in New Jersey with his wife.
 Interview with Norman Green
  1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I like the opening scene, writing it was one of those experiences you get when you really open up and let it rip.
  1. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I would ride the subway with Al Martillo, maybe ride the Staten Island Ferry over and back, just to listen to her, just to see if I could understand how she lives with it all.
  1. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
No fair stealing other people’s mojo, you got to get your own.
  1. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My characters are usually put together from different people. I might take an aspect of your personality that intrigues me, I might take one thing from you, like maybe you have a problem with authority and it might express itself in some unique way, and I’ll put that together with stuff from other sources to get my starting point, and after that, characters kind of tell me who they are.
  1. What made you want to become a writer?
Reading, like when you find that one page, that one transcendent scene, and you think, wow, man. I have to do that.
Book Two
Gabriele Russo
Fiery Seas Publishing
June 13, 2017
Book Description:
When you live in a world pullulating with gods, can you truly be an atheist? Well, yes…if you know a way to get rid them.
Mysantheos, a fanatic atheist at the head of a powerful lobby/terrorist organization, has created a weapon able to kill gods. All he needs is a disruptive figurehead to attract the masses. Goblin, who has just tried to supplant Queen Louhi as CEO of Gods Incorporated, has been deemed the right kind of unworthy. Mysantheos breaks him out of the Queen’s prison and the godslaughter begins.
As the divine bodies pile up, panicked gods blame the CEO Queen for Goblin’s escape. Resentment builds in the company and violent factions start pushing for the extermination of the human race. Will Queen Louhi’s Nerd Squad, a group of angry gods, and Richard (a down-on-his-luck private eye),  manage to find Mysantheos in time to prevent what promises to be the bloodiest conflict between men and god ever?
Fiery Seas
Excerpt 1
“LET’S KILL ‘EM ALL!” YELLED MARS, presiding
in lieu of Jupiter.
Ahura-Mazda* sighed wearily. These young gods
were exasperating, and now that the meeting was in its
fiftieth year, there were always a few standing in for their
elders. Mars, always hot under the helmet, was one of the
worst.
He smoothed his long curly beard, rose and rearranged
his silken robes. “How many times must we explain this? We
tried that before. Does the Deluge ring a bell? And now we’re
back to square one. There has got to be a better way.”
“Not to mention how much work it was,” said Vishnu,
playing with his nose ring. “Exhausting! All that rain…and
then having to recreate everything.”
“Well, I for one wouldn’t mind getting a good storm on,”
said Thor. “It would be more interesting than this meeting.”
“You gods do what you want with your humans.” Inti’s
sun-disk crown of feathers was disarrayed from shaking his
head so much. “My believers are still faithful, and no one is
dumping a shitload of water on their heads.
About the Author:
Gabriele Russo, AKA Lucie-Gabrielle Jolicoeur-Rousseau, was born in Quebec City amidst a family of book lovers – her father had dreamed of being a writer and both of her brothers are published authors.
Since she earned her Bachelor’s in History, it was no surprise (except to her) that she ended up working in restaurants, eventually owning two, which almost drove her mad. She sold them and was nursed back to pseudo-sanity by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.
That’s when she answered the family calling and decided to write. Armed with her ideas for the Gods Inc. series she went back to the University and got her Master’s in Creative Writing.
She now lives with her husband in Culpeper, Virginia, where she divides her time between painting, ripping apart and reconstructing her recently bought historical home, playing tennis and, of course, writing more books.
EXCERPT:
DANNY:
Turning carefully as the sunlight filtered through my bedroom window, I propped up on my elbow and reached out to brush a wayward blond hair behind her ear. My heart ached deep in my chest that she’d grow up without her momma. My sister’s little girl was now mine, and she’d be raised as my own as best I could. Being a single father for the last few years had forced me to grow the fuck up in certain areas, at least all areas other than women. It’s not like I could imagine a woman coming into my life and helping me raise Lyndsay.
“That tickles!” Her little voice surprised me. Big blue eyes looked up at me with an innocence in them that I knew I’d do anything to protect.
“What tickles?” I lifted an eyebrow and reached over to tickle the side of her neck. “This?” Her giggles filled up the air as I reached for her.
“No, Daddy! No!” She swatted at me and rolled off the bed, hitting the floor.
“Hey. You okay?” I moved quickly, ready to scoop her up.
She smiled up at me from the floor. “Yes!” Bounding up, she tickled my neck and ran off toward the living room, her blond curls flying behind her.
“You tricker!” I yelled playfully from the bedroom and got up. I ran my fingers through my hair and walked down the hallway to the kitchen. It was hard to believe Jannie had been gone for five years. Seemed like yesterday she was giving me shit about finding a good woman in my life. Too bad she never found a good man.
“What are you thinking about?” Lyndsay tilted her head to the side as she sat up at the breakfast bar, her little chin propped up in her hands. “You look worried.”
“Nope. Just trying to wake up. I went to sleep with a princess next to me and woke up to a frog.” I pinched the tip of her nose softly. “What happened?”
“A frog! Not me, Daddy.” She pulled back, shaking her head.
“No. You’re right. You’re much too pretty for that.” I walked to the fridge. “What does my girl want for breakfast this morning?”
“Pancakes, and eggs and maybe some bacon. Oh! And some sausage. And that ham we like so much, daddy. The really salty one.”
I laughed and glanced over at her. “Cinnamon rolls it is.”
She huffed and rolled her eyes. “Fine. I’m going to watch cartoons. Are we going to Mimi’s again today?”
“Yeah, baby. You know it’s baseball season right now. I have to be there when they tell me to.”
“I hate baseball season.” She walked toward the living room with her shoulders rolled in. I needed to find a damn day off to spend with her. The cute little thing had no clue that I was her uncle instead of her father. She didn’t need to know. That was the decision mom, dad and I made the day we buried my sister. It was better this way, and I was old enough and wealthy enough to take Lyndsay.
“Not that I could do it without you,” I mumbled to the empty air around me. My mom and dad had been more than helpful, and between the three of us, Lyndsay was growing up to be a bright, happy, healthy little girl.
“Dad!” she yelled from the living room.
“Yeah?” I pressed the button on the stove and walked to the edge of the kitchen.
“When are you going to bring home someone that can do my hair right?”
I put my hand on my hip and gave her a funny look. “Are you saying I’m not a good beauty shop lady or something?”
She giggle-snorted, the sound of it warming my soul. “Dad. We need a girl around here.”
“Well, we have one.” I pointed to her. “You!”
Staring through the side window, a deep-blue summer sky flickered between pine trees covered in kudzu. Sarah’s car passed on the right. I turned the other way.
Off the freeway, we headed east and then south down a two lane road through sleepy little towns one after the other. Twenty minutes later, I leaned forward between the front seats, “Wow. Look.”
Branches from gigantic live oak trees slanted towards the middle of the street. The trees looked as though they were trying to touch each other and some did. They reminded me of my cozy canopy bed where Sarah and I had spent many nights, giggling and whispering. But this canopy was made of tree limbs in different shades of green, dripping with grayish, Spanish moss. The moss hung like ghostly long arms swinging in the wind.
“This is kind of spooky beautiful. It’s like being in a green tunnel.” I cracked my window.
A whiff of salty ocean filled the car. Sydney lifted his head as the trees whizzed by. His nose twitched. “We’re getting close, Syd.” He squeezed into the same space with me and gazed out the front window.
Suddenly, the trees disappeared. The cloudless sky stretched with no end in sight. Pelicans flew in an upside down, V formation. On both sides of the road, squiggly tidal creeks flowed through green marshlands. White birds with skinny legs stood statue-still in the shimmering water. This was a place I’d only seen in postcards.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Sheri, originally from California, moved to South Carolina with her husband, two children and a Siamese cat. Soon they adopted their first rescue dog who influenced their need to continue living with dogs. Sheri taught a multi-handicapped Special Ed class, and then a GED-parenting class, which included home visits. Because of her love of reading, Sheri found unusual ways to encourage children to read. After her rescue of a difficult dog, Sheri enrolled in dog classes to change his behavior. Her dream of writing, Seven Days to Goodbye, came from the culmination of her beach experiences, her understanding of behaviors, and from research with PAALS, a service dog organization.
Writing is like a craving. I am possessed by words, places, and, people. In every aspect of my life I have enjoyed teaching students, observing their potential, and motivating them to push themselves. I hoped each child would learn they could be anything they desired.
Most of my students had trouble reading. My goal for each child was to make them fall in love with books. I read to my students first thing in the morning and just before the last bell of the day. As we sang along to their favorite songs, their fingers followed each word. Music actually helped them memorize new words.
The hardship that faced many of my students was not having parents who noticed when their child needed love and attention. They were wrapped up in their own desires and oblivious to what was happening inside their child. As a teacher, I encountered many sad episodes with family relationships and tried hard to give those children the attention they needed while in my classroom. There were also wonderful families that I’d like to model.
I hope as I write young adult novels, parents may reflect on their own parenting skills. Real life supports my writing about relationships, but I have relied on PAALS to guide me in my writing about service dogs. The volunteers with PAALS teach me the correct techniques on training service puppies, and how to incorporate special needs with their dogs.
My characters are a mix from the real world and from my imagination. This is the fun part of being a writer. I believed I was in complete control of each character, until they started talking back to me. Then my fingers and brain move on auto pilot, and I write stuff I had no idea would appear on the page. No, I don’t always keep what I write, but those thoughts may send me in a new direction.
In each story I have written, I have favorite parts that pull at my heart strings. In Seven Days to Goodbye, I enjoyed writing about the service dog, Sydney, and his magical connection with Logan, the young boy with autism. His mother’s fears shot out from nowhere, and the relationship with Chase and Trina brought a warm fuzzy feeling as I wrote.
In Starting Over, I used old memories from teens who had a rough family environment and used Trina’s family has the complete opposite. As different as each story is, the themes are about relationships, change, and making decisions.
A young adult novel should be a powerful force to make the reader identify with the story problem, and move them from being self-involved to self-discovery. My hope is the reader will relate to a character and decide on the type of person they want to become.
I have taken some spare time during the finalizing of Starting Over, and have written half of my first draft- For Keeps. It will follow Starting Over and have new conflicts and a new character or two.
Thanks for reading about my need to write. I guess, even as an adult, it is never too late to start a new chapter in your lifetime! Writing has definitely given me a new adventure.
