Rise by Sierra Cross blitz

Rise
Sierra Cross
(Coven of Fire, #1)
Publication date: June 15th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

I closed the door on magic long ago…the day it made me an orphan.

Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives—my mother among them—to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it’s back.

As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I’m the key to reviving the coven. And there’s an incredibly sexy guardian stranded on my couch who’s promising to help me stop the demons and keep the veil between the realms standing.

One problem: I’ve never been able to use magic. Our local bad boy warlock assures me I have the talent, but even if I did, we don’t have enough witches to complete a coven. The only way to survive is to pull together this pack of magicborn misfits, who have more secrets than spells, into a makeshift coven.

Can we—three untrained witches, a sarcastic warlock, and an overly intense guardian—take back the city…before the demongate falls and the forces that killed my mother destroy us too?

EXCERPT:

Startled, I flailed backward. Losing my grip on all six bottles. With a sickening crash they toppled to the stone floor, exploding on impact. The crisp smell of alcohol punctured the dank air.

My heart was still thundering, but I saw no one. “Who’s there?” I demanded.

A figure came into view. Not like he stepped out of the shadows…more like he materialized in front of me. Tall. Powerfully built. With short brown hair and a lean angular face covered in bruises and bloody scrapes. I could have drawn that rugged face, and all its battle scars, from memory.

I forced myself to look into his dark, knowing eyes. The eyes that I’d once allowed to see into my deepest grief. “Matt?” My voice came out higher, younger than I expected. “I didn’t think you were ever coming back.”

“Alexandra…kid, we need to talk.” Matt’s gravelly voice—a voice I hadn’t heard since I was fourteen years old—was low and serious. “I’ve waited over a year for you to come down here. Don’t know how much longer I can hold this form. So listen and don’t interrupt.”

I’d almost forgotten how bossy Matt could be for a ghost. Well, ethereal being anyway. Despite his torn T-shirt and jeans, he had a palpable air of authority, like some kind of rogue commando. The impatient blaze in his eyes would be intimidating, if I didn’t know him. Actually, it still was. But as blown away as I was to see him again, my life had changed since the last time he’d paid me an astral visit. Since then, I’d learned that I had no business interacting with supernatural beings.

“I’m not a kid anymore, Matt,” I said, as firmly as I could. “And I’m not part of your world. Look…you helped me back then, I’ll always be grateful. But I think it would be best if you left now.”

“That’s because you don’t have all the information yet.” He folded his muscular arms, which looked so real and powerful I had to remind myself that they, like the rest of his strapping body, weren’t physically here in the room but in another realm entirely. “Once you’re up to speed on the magical dangers facing our city—”

“Thanks, but I have enough problems to deal with. You know, in the real world.” I couldn’t bring myself to tell Matt that I’d been officially declared magically deficient. Not when he’d always referred to me as “the next coven leader,” after my mother. Instead, I glanced at the shards at my feet and shook my head in despair. Randy was definitely going to make me pay for these broken vodka bottles. Just add it to my tab. “Sorry, but you need to leave me alone, so I can deal with this, okay?”

I started upstairs to get the broom…but didn’t make it past the third step before his form appeared again on the next highest step. Inches between us.

“You have no idea what your real problems are, Alexandra.”

I froze.

Walk right through him, I told myself. You’ve done it before. But Matt’s chiseled face, swathed in desperation, held my full attention. Something had changed there since I last saw him—startling, given that he was incorporeal. In the last ten years, he hadn’t aged one hour. Funny, how I used to think of him as an older guy. Now he looked about my age. The dark purple bruises flowering along his square jaw hadn’t healed. Nor had the bloody gash down his pillowy lower lip—the one part of him that looked incongruously boyish. It was his eyes that had changed.

“I need your help, Alexandra.” His dark eyes, once warm and charming, burned with an urgency that put fear into my heart. “Please.”

EXCERPT:

It’s not often that Alpha challenges take place. And this—where I fight a fellow pack mate for the right to be Alpha—is unusual. It’s never happened before in the history of our pack.

Then all thoughts go out of my head as Gabriel beats his chest. Head thrown back, he howls out a challenge. It echoes around the courtyard and then further out into the forest.

Silence.

Then a howl from beyond the complex, then another. It’s the feral shifters.

Lowering his gaze back at me, Gabriel yells across the space, “Hear that, girl, even the wild shifters out there acknowledge me as their leader. You are nothing in comparison.”

I don’t react, don’t even move a muscle. Don’t breathe. Closing my eyes, I focus inwards, reaching out through the bond for Luke. Zoom in on that gleaming silver-gray and amber strand that connects us.

Energy throbs down the mating bond. Pours through me. Filling me with a rush of adrenaline. A churning. A violent influx of hope so intense and powerful that my eyes fly open. I want to run toward him, jump him and kick his legs out from underneath him. But—

Wait! Luke’s voice rings through my head. Clear as a bell.

Wait!

I lock onto Gabriel’s gaze. And wait.

I don’t move.

Stay still.

Bide my time.

The buzz of disquiet from the pack members in the balconies above. The trees bowing their branches, rustling their leaves. The stray roar of a wild tiger in the forest. The faraway hum of vehicles on the road leading to the city…All of it fades. Leaving me in a bubble of silence.

I watch Gabriel tense. His muscles twitch with impatience. The sweat glistens on his face. Then, just as I begin to lose patience, reach the end of my vigil, he gives in.

With a roar of impatience, he rushes toward me.

I still wait, Luke’s strength grounding me, holding me when I would’ve leapt to meet him. In place until the last minute. Then, Go! A pulse rippling down the mating bond pushes me to step aside at the last second.

Gabriel’s body barrels past. So close the breeze in his wake ruffles my clothes. He crashes face down, and before he can recover, I’ve leaped on his back with enough force to hear the satisfying crunch of snapping bone.

A howl from him, and then I raise my hands, fingers clasped, aiming for his forehead. But I underestimate his speed. Gabriel’s a shifter, and his body blurs as he moves. He throws me off with such force that I fly through the air, landing halfway down the courtyard on my back. The breath knocked out of me, my head crashing against the hard ground. Before he can jump on me, I’m up. On my feet and moving aside as he rushes me. And misses.

Again.

This time, he turns fast, his movements almost too agile for his big body. And I don’t have a choice but to meet him face-to-face.

Damn!

Head-on, I don’t stand a chance. He’s bigger, more powerful. He’ll kill me.

Click Date Repeat Series Box Set
K.J. Farnham
(Click Date Repeat #1-2)
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Click Date Repeat Series Box Set (Click Date Repeat, Click Date Repeat Again)
These books are full-length standalone contemporary women’s fiction novels with adult language and happily ever afters.

Click Date Repeat
These days, finding love online is as commonplace as ordering that coveted sweater. But back in 2003, the whole concept of internet dating was still quite new, with a stigma attached to it that meant those who were willing to test the waters faced a fair amount of skepticism from friends and family.
Such is the case for Chloe Thompson, a restless 20-something tired of the typical dating scene and curious about what she might find inside her parents’ computer. With two serious but failed relationships behind her, Chloe isn’t even entirely sure what she’s looking for. She just knows that whatever it is, she wants to find it.
Chloe’s foray into online dating involves a head-first dive into a world of matches, ice breakers and the occasional offer of dick pics, all while Chloe strives to shake herself of the ex who just refuses to disappear. Will she simultaneously find herself and “the one” online, or will the ever-growing pile of humorous and downright disastrous dates only prove her friends and family right? There’s only one way to find out…
Click. Date. Repeat.

Click Date Repeat Again
Never in her wildest dreams would Jess Mason ever imagine herself being a part of the online dating hype. Yet here she is smack-dab in the middle of it all. And she’s dated her fair share of online crazies to be a new connoisseur of all the weirdos out in the cyber world. After a slew of bad dates and pussy (cat that is) pictures, Jess knows that she needs to finally commit to something—or someone. And suddenly there he is, a man she can actually imagine herself with.
But when Jess is faced with an undeniable attraction to a handsome, unavailable co-worker, she’s conflicted about continuing her quest for Mr. Right-At-Her-Fingertips. Now, it’s feast or famine—and she’s not willing to starve. She certainly can’t have both–that wouldn’t be right. After all, that’s the “old Jess.” The new Jess is ready to start clicking with someone special and make a real love connection.
**This book is a spinoff of Click Date Repeat, so it can be read as a standalone.**

BLURB:

The job should have been easy—patrol a swank beach that serves as a backyard for Maui’s rich, kick out the riffraff, and get a tan in the process. But rent-a-cop Samantha Winters didn’t anticipate a deliciously grumpy cop, Sergeant Grady Roark, who comes down to the beach to bust her chops and instead leaves her breathless…and wondering why the one man who could help her seems determined to thwart her at every turn.

Grady is keeping secrets from Sam that have him walking the line between attraction and duty. But when Sam becomes the target of a shadowy organization, Grady will have to choose between the law and the temptation of a woman who has him breaking every rule he’s ever known.

The job should have been easy, but when the bullets start flying, Sam learns nothing is as easy as it seems when you’re a Gun for Hire.

Excerpt:

“Why John Deacon, Sam?” Grady’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.
I threw my hands up. “It could be Jesus Christ himself signing my paycheck and I’d still be doing it for the same reasons! The job works for my family. What is your problem with John Deacon? And don’t tell me nothing—you owe me more than that.”
“Maybe I’m just jealous.” Grady stared ahead. “Like you said.”
My stomach did a loop. “Don’t use your charm on me, I’m immune—”
“You think I’m charming?”
“Hell no, I don’t! And particularly not when you’re avoiding my question.”
“But you said I had charm.” He tilted his head and gave me a long, sly look from the corner of his eyes. His teeth flashed white from that tanned face and I nearly had to fan myself when I realized I loved the feeling of Grady teasing me.
I threw my hands up in the air. “I give up!”
He wanted to talk about confusing? All I knew about Grady prior to this day was that he was six-foot-two of gorgeous and about as warm as a polar bear on the North Pole in January. And now—

Interview with J J Montgomery
What is your favorite part of this book and why?

There is a scene in the book where Samantha commits a felony right in front of Grady, in an effort to find a new lead. It’s not her smartest move, but it’s a turning point for her and Grady’s relationship. Suddenly Grady, this by-the-book cop, is forced to choose his rule book or trust in this woman who has turned his life upside down. And the scene happens with the humor I love from both of them – giving each other hell and loving every minute of it.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Uh, do I have to be married in this scenario? If this is Pretendistan and I’m not married, I’m desperately in love with Kai, Grady’s partner and the man Sam’s sister secretly loves. He’s just that perfect romance novel guy – strong and brave and considerate and I’d always write that he picks his socks up off the floor and does the dishes willingly.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Bet Me by Jennifer Cruisie. She’s said herself that it’s the best romance she could have written, and she might be right. It’s wonderful.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Almost all of them have some resemblance to someone I know. A nervous habit, a tic, a sense of humor…I borrow from everyone I know. Beware becoming my friend! You’ll end up in a book.

What made you want to become a writer?

My Uncle was a screenwriter in Hollywood and he just believed in me, believed I could do this. I’d never be here if not for my Uncle Dave.

Sander eyed the
irate woman standing before him. From the moment she arrived, she’d baffled and
frustrated him. Gone was his reserved and polished intended. In her place stood
a creature who screamed, pouted, grimaced, slapped his sister, and nearly
destroyed his brother-in-law’s procreativity. She was brash and out of control.
An evolutionary step backward.
And
yet…fascinating.
He’d never been
close to a human. His kind blended in with their kind, worked alongside them,
but remained insular. Safe. Hidden. Occasionally studying them from afar. Never
interacting beyond a polite nod or greeting.
Why would
Marseille switch with a human? To punish him? Humiliate him?
He’d find out
why and promise to be more attentive. He had no intention of meeting new
potentials. He’d chosen her. Marseille Renaud.
She was strong
and graceful. And useful.
He clenched his
jaw. Damn it, his intended wasn’t a mere tool. She deserved more respect than
that. More than a vision of beauty, Marsi saved their hides during the last
Follower attack. His clan needed her. Although her talent wasn’t the reason he
chose Marseille, he’d be a fool to let her go now.
Was his sister
right? Was the switch a mere ploy, a demand for more control?
“Let’s go,
everyone,” he said, forcing the what-ifs from his mind. “I want to get to
Nicole’s home by this afternoon.”
The woman in
question stared at him. “Exactly where are we?”
“Minnesota.
Outside Minneapolis.”
That seemed to
relax her somewhat. He guided her to the foyer where they nearly collided with
his brother, who’d raced down the stairs with a backpack slung over his
shoulder.
“Gotta bring my
books along so I can study on the ride.” Tyran tore into the hallway ahead of
them.
“He’s a college
student?”
“Medical
student.” Sander ushered Nicole into the utility room and opened the door to
the garage. “Makes sense since he’s one of the healers for our clan.”
“Uh-huh.” She
jerked to the side as Calia sashayed past on her way out of the house. “Is a
clan like a pride?”
“No, a related
group of families. Because our numbers are few, matings are arranged between
clans. Once I met Marseille, I didn’t bother with meeting any remaining
potentials.”
And now
Marseille was gone. Except she wasn’t. She watched him with big dark eyes, her
luscious mouth slightly puckered in contemplation. Devastating even in the
shapeless sweater the human woman had selected to wear, something obviously
dragged from the back of the closet. He’d never seen it before.
She tilted her
head, and her long black hair draped over her shoulder. Hair he loved to twist
in his hands as she lay beneath him.
“So what’s your
talent?” she asked.
“What?” He shook
off the sensual vision. “Um, my physical strength and power.”
“I’m the most
feline of us,” Calia boasted, her hand on the door of a dark sedan.
“Exceptional jumper and climber, and I always land on my feet.”
Sander leaned in
close to Nicole. “Within reason. I wouldn’t throw her out a ten-story window,
although sometimes I’d like to.”

His sister
glared. “I heard that.”

Interview with Kira Shayde
Where do you get inspiration for your stories? My dreams. I know it sounds cliché, but I have vivid, lucid dreams. I love sleeping because I get to dream. Also, I’m a serious daydreamer, which unfortunately means I lose focus. My husband knows all too well that most of what he says to me vanishes into thin air because I’m off in some other world.
How did you do research for your book? When I see something in my head—a place, for example—I search for the place (or a similar place) on the internet. The characteristics I read online are woven into the narrative. For Ancient Heat, when I pictured the cabin that the hero and his family own in northern Minnesota, I looked up real estate listings for cabins in northern Minnesota. Same thing with personal characters or accents. The internet is my friend.
Do you have another profession besides writing? I’m a web designer and WordPress developer as my day job.
If you could go back in time, where would you go? I would love to see dinosaurs, but safely somehow. I’d also like to go back to when I was a young teen and tell my mother that I really should have braces to fix my cross-bite.

What is your next project? I’m working on the follow-up book to Ancient Heat, which introduces falcon shifters and reunites the reader with werelions from the first book. The falcons and the lions must put aside their differences and work together to defeat a common enemy…and a particular falcon and lion really learn to put aside their differences. I’m also working on the third novella in my Primal Shifters series set in Africa with lion and hyena shifters at war.
